Thousands of patients caught COVID in NSW public hospitals last year and hundreds died, fuelling concerns among infection control experts and healthcare workers that hospitals are not taking strong enough precautions against airborne viruses.

NSW Ministry of Health data released under freedom of information laws shows at least 6,007 patients caught COVID in hospital in 2023 and 297 died — about 115 laboratory confirmed infections and six deaths per week, on average.

Similar figures were recorded in the first few months of 2024, with 1,729 patients catching COVID and 86 dying between January and April this year. For context, about 2,100 people died from or with COVID in NSW in 2023, suggesting about 14 per cent of those were patients who contracted the virus in hospital.

The data was released following an application by lawyer Peter Vogel who, for 18 months, was pointed between the Ministry of Health — which initially denied holding "complete and accurate records" of hospital acquired COVID infections — and the Clinical Excellence Commission, which directed Mr Vogel back to the Ministry of Health, which eventually released the data he had sought.

The figures are only a snapshot of the pandemic's ongoing impact on hospitals, and NSW Health would not clarify how it is collecting data on hospital acquired COVID infections or provide more detail on deceased patients' ages and genders, or data for previous years.

Still, experts say infection control protocols in hospitals are not good enough, with some doctors warning widespread indifference to COVID is costing too many lives and adding unnecessary pressure to a health system already under strain.

Hospitals know how to stop COVID spreading Stéphane Bouchoucha, president of the Australasian College for Infection Prevention and Control, said the new figures were "concerning and tragic" especially for the families of people who had died.

"We know how COVID is transmitted and we know how to prevent healthcare associated infections," Dr Bouchouca said — by ensuring good ventilation and air filtration, testing and contact tracing, isolating infected patients and requiring healthcare workers to wear masks.

If hospitals were recording similar numbers of deaths from golden staph infections, Dr Bouchoucha said, swift action would be taken. "But I think people react differently because it's COVID — 'It's alright, it's a respiratory disease, it's not so bad' — trying to minimise the fact it is still a healthcare associated infection," he said.

"This is the core business of infection prevention and control … The premise that we can allow some deaths, to me, is wrong."

For months experts and healthcare workers in several states have been warning that too many patients are catching COVID in health facilities, with Victorian data showing about 9 per cent of those who caught the virus in hospital last year died.

In NSW, hospitals have shifted from an "emergency" pandemic response to managing COVID in line with other transmissible infections. Local health districts now must conduct their own risk assessments and adjust infection control protocols accordingly. Staff are no longer required to wear masks unless they're caring for COVID patients, when they must use N95 respirators, which are significantly more effective at preventing transmission of respiratory viruses than surgical masks.

But some doctors say that guidance is not always enforced, with healthcare workers in some hospitals choosing to wear surgical masks around COVID patients. Others are concerned that COVID testing is not conducted frequently enough and that staff are discouraged from ordering PCR tests to save money.

'The government has some really serious questions to answer' Amanda Cohn, NSW Greens spokesperson for health and a former GP, said she was "surprised" to learn that data on hospital acquired COVID infections and deaths had been released because she had repeatedly asked Health Minister Ryan Park and Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant about it. Dr Chant told a Budget Estimates hearing last October that the Clinical Excellence Commission — the lead agency for infection prevention and hospital acquired infections — did not "collect and aggregate" it in a "systematic way".

"I have been reassured by the chief health officer that NSW Health is 'conscious of taking every step we can to minimise the risk of [COVID] transmission' in hospitals," Dr Cohn told ABC News. "But these figures make me very concerned that that's not the case."

Dr Cohn pointed to a recent study by the Burnet Institute and the Victorian Department of Health which found testing hospital patients for COVID on admission and staff wearing N95 respirators could prevent hundreds of deaths statewide and save the health system tens of millions of dollars each year.

"To know that those things aren't happening in New South Wales, meanwhile thousands of people are catching COVID in hospitals that should be safe — I think the government has some really serious questions to answer," she said.

Of particular concern, Dr Cohn said, is NSW Health's policy on taking transmission-based precautions — requiring healthcare workers to wear N95 respirators only when dealing with patients who are confirmed or suspected to have COVID.

"Only taking precautions after you know somebody is confirmed to be infectious is not good enough," she said, adding: "We need to see leadership from the health minister."

Dr Cohn said she had also spoken to many medically vulnerable patients who reported having to ask hospital staff to wear masks. "We would never expect people to have to individually ask their surgeon to wash their hands, we just expect that high standards are followed when we go into a health facility, that you will be safe."

Are hospitals prepared for future pandemics? Marilyn Cruickshank, professor of nursing at the University of Technology Sydney and a board member of the International Federation of Infection Control, said there were several factors likely influencing the drop-off in infection prevention and control efforts in NSW hospitals. These include high levels of exhaustion among healthcare workers since the onset of the pandemic, sector workforce challenges and budget restrictions — all of which are causing "strain and tension" in hospitals.

From a policy perspective, she added, high rates of vaccination against COVID and fewer deaths in recent years mean the "perceived risk" of the virus is much lower now than it was in, say, 2020. "It's not just that people don't want to do the right thing," Professor Cruickshank said. "There's a story behind it."

Still, she said, the new data suggests current infection prevention measures are "not good enough". "From a personal point of view, I would like to see staff continuing to mask in hospitals" using N95 respirators, Professor Cruickshank said — particularly those in emergency departments and wards that care for immunocompromised patients or other vulnerable groups like newborns.

"As healthcare workers, we should ensure that our hospitals are as safe as we can make them," she said. "So to me, it's a patient safety issue to try to keep the levels of hospital acquired COVID as low as possible."

However the "biggest change" she'd like to see is more support for hospital infection control teams, which need "good epidemiological skills and the resources to be able to quickly respond to outbreaks".

"Unfortunately, I don't think COVID will be the last pandemic that we see — there will be others in future," Professor Cruickshank said. "So we need people who are trained up to be able to deal with whatever comes next."

'It's too late for my mum' but we can still protect other patients For Ravi Fernando, whose 79-year-old mother Thelge died in hospital in August 2022, it's frustrating and upsetting to know patients are still dying after catching COVID in a place they should be safe.

Mr Fernando's mother was admitted to St George Hospital in Sydney's south after suffering a subarachnoid haemorrhage due to a ruptured brain aneurysm in late June 2022. She had successful emergency surgery and, for a few days, seemed to be recovering well in the ICU. But soon she began deteriorating and the hospital informed Mr Fernando that Thelge had caught COVID, most likely from one of her nurses.

A quality management consultant who has worked with aged care facilities, Mr Fernando was shocked but not surprised: most of the staff in ICU were wearing surgical masks, not N95 respirators, he said — some wore them down around their chin. "Maybe I should have raised concerns, but I wasn't in that frame of mind at the time," he said. "But I remember noticing that because back then, COVID was still a big deal."

Thelge was intubated and given antivirals only after Mr Fernando requested them, which still bothers him, but she died a couple of weeks later. An investigation by the Healthcare Complaints Commission (HCCC) found there was no evidence that her death was caused by COVID: St George Hospital's assessment concluded her COVID infection "did complicate the management" of her presenting condition but did not contribute to her death.

But Mr Fernando strongly disagrees. "She was clearly recovering before she got COVID … there was no question about that. Of course, aneurysms are complicated, so you never know, but there was a clear trigger for her deteriorating," he said. "The death of a loved one is distressing regardless. But when you know that it was preventable, it's very distressing."

Had St George Hospital "genuinely listened" to his family's feedback and improved its infection control protocols, he added, more deaths could have been prevented (the HCCC said it was "satisfied" with the hospital's COVID safe protocols). "It still would have been too late for my mum, but at least others are not going to be hurt in a similar way," Mr Fernando said.

ABC News requested interviews with the Health Minister Ryan Park and Kathy Dempsey, NSW Chief Infection Prevention and Control Practitioner and Healthcare Associated Infection Advisor at the Clinical Excellence Commission — NSW Health declined on their behalf.

NSW Health also did not respond to specific questions including about whether it was comfortable with current levels of illness and death in hospitals, if it would be reviewing infection control policies and whether it had conducted audits and upgrades to ventilation and filtration systems.

"NSW Health continues to closely monitor and assess the way we respond to acute respiratory infections, including COVID-19, to keep patients, staff and visitors to our health facilities safe," a spokesperson said.

"We remind the community if they are experiencing cold or flu symptoms, they should stay at home, where possible, to protect others. If someone has cold or flu symptoms and they need to go out, they should wear a mask to protect others. Symptomatic people should also avoid visiting high risk settings like hospitals, aged and disability care facilities or people who are at higher risk of severe illness."

Elon Musk may have put the final nail in X’s coffin. On Wednesday, Musk appeared to endorse an antisemitic post by user @breakingbaht alleging that “Jewish communities have been pushing the exact kind of dialectical hatred against whites that they claim to want people to stop using against them.” In response, Musk posted, “You have spoken the actual truth.”

The original post seemed to echo the beliefs of the “great replacement” conspiracy theory, which is popular among white supremacists and right-wing extremists. The backlash has been swift. In a statement earlier today, White House spokesperson Andrew Bates condemned the “abhorrent promotion of antisemitic and racist hate in the strongest terms, which runs against our core values as Americans,” and marquee advertisers have been quick to pull their business. IBM, Disney, Liongsgate, and the European Union have pulled advertising from X in response to Musk’s post. According to a report in Axios, Apple has also paused advertising on X.

At the time of publication, Apple had not responded to multiple requests for comment, nor has it confirmed that it is pulling its advertising from X.

“Advertisers like IBM and Apple aren’t just big names, they’re big spenders on X,” says Angelo Carusone, president of Media Matters, a media watchdog group which has been tracking advertiser behavior on X. Carusone, citing data shared by data insights firm Sensor Tower, says that in July, the top five advertisers on X by spending were Apple, FinanceBuzz.io, Amazon, Mondelez International, and Hewlett-Packard. In the past, Apple has frequently been among the top 20 advertisers on X.

Carusone adds that Apple typically signals a certain level of brand safety to other, smaller advertisers. The company is also known for its stringent policies around controversial content in its App Store and on its own platforms. If Apple has paused, or plans to pause, its advertising on X, it “could have a halo effect,” Carusone claims, scaring other advertisers away from the platform. “It goes way beyond money.”

In August, X CEO Linda Yaccarino emphasized that the company was expanding its brand-safety tools, designed to give advertisers and marketers more control over what kind of content their ads appeared in proximity to.

But this recent spate of antisemitic content on X, and the juxtaposition of big-brand ads next to it, only underscores to advertisers that X is a risky bet, experts argue. “Even with those tools, if you’re an advertiser right now you’re thinking, there’s quite literally nothing I can do on this platform to improve my experience,” Carusone says.

“The problem with X is not only that there's misinformation and antisemitic content on the platform, and other hateful content as well, but that it's being spread by Musk himself,” says Jasmine Enberg, principal analyst for social media at Insider Intelligence, a market research firm.

“The brand safety concern for advertisers isn't just about the content but about the platform and the leadership.” Enberg argues that Musk has treated the company like something he could remake in his own image, not understanding that “what he wants and what he seemingly believes is not necessarily aligned with what users and advertisers on the platform want and believe.”

Under Musk’s leadership, X is expected to see an unprecedented 54 percent drop in advertising revenue, which previously accounted for more than 90 percent of the company’s total.

Even before Musk took ownership of then-Twitter, experts worried that his particular brand of free speech absolutism would lead to a flood of trolls and hate speech on the platform. In his first weeks as owner, Musk laid off nearly everyone working on trust and safety, the teams responsible for ensuring that hate speech, violence, and inappropriate content stay off the platform. (Hate speech did, in fact, increase under Musk’s leadership.) Musk’s lax approach to content moderation also nearly got the platform banned during the 2022 presidential runoffs in Brazil, the platform’s third largest market.

In response, advertisers began to flee, worried about the brand safety risks of their products appearing next to hateful or inflammatory posts. Since joining X as CEO earlier this year, Yaccarino, formerly global advertising lead at NBCUniversal, has seemingly been hampered in her ability to woo back advertisers by Musk’s decisions. And while X has claimed it was regaining advertisers, an October study from Media Matters found that X’s 100 largest advertisers were spending 90 percent less than they did before Musk’s takeover.

A new class of cosmic X-ray sources discovered

An international team of astronomers, led by researchers from the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Warsaw, have identified a new class of cosmic X-ray sources. The findings have been published in „Astrophysical Journal Letters.”

Most people encounter X-rays during medical visits, where they are used to create images of bones or diagnose lung conditions. These X-rays are generated using artificial sources.

However, not everyone knows that celestial objects can also emit X-ray radiation. “Some cosmic phenomena produce X-rays naturally,” explains Dr. Przemek Mróz, the lead author of the study. “For example, X-rays may be produced by a hot gas falling onto compact objects like white dwarfs, neutron stars, or black holes. X-rays can also be generated by decelerating charged particles, such as electrons.”

The researchers identified a group of 29 unusual objects in the Magellanic Clouds, the two nearby satellite galaxies of the Milky Way. These objects displayed unexpected behavior: they exhibited long-duration (typically a few months) outbursts, during which they brightened by 10 to 20 times their usual brightness. While some of these objects exhibited recurring outbursts every few years, others flared up only once during the observation period.

The team discovered these objects by analyzing over 20 years of data collected by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) survey, led by astronomers from the University of Warsaw.

One detected object, named OGLE-mNOVA-11, began an outburst in November 2023, providing a unique opportunity for a detailed study.

"We observed this star with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), one of the largest telescopes in the world,” says Dr. Mróz. “Its optical spectrum revealed signatures of ionized atoms of helium, carbon, and nitrogen, indicating extremely high temperatures.”

The star was also observed by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, which detected X-rays corresponding to a temperature of 600,000 degrees Celsius. Given its distance of over 160,000 light years, OGLE-mNOVA-11 emitted more than 100 times the luminosity of the Sun.

The object’s unusual properties closely resembled another system, called ASASSN-16oh, discovered in 2016 by the All Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae.

“We believe OGLE-mNOVA-11, ASASSN-16oh, and the other 27 objects form a new class of transient X-ray sources,” says Dr. Mróz. “We’ve named them millinovae, as their peak brightness is roughly a thousand times lower than that of classical novae.”

Millinovae are thought to be binary star systems consisting of two objects orbiting each other with a period of a few days. A white dwarf—a dense remnant of a once-massive star—closely orbits a subgiant star that has exhausted the hydrogen in its core and expanded. The proximity between the two stars allows material to flow from the subgiant to the white dwarf.

The source of the X-rays remains a mystery, but scientists have proposed two possible explanations. According to one scenario, the X-rays might be produced as the subgiant’s material falls onto the white dwarf’s surface, releasing energy.

Alternatively, the X-rays could result from a thermonuclear runaway on the white dwarf surface. As material accumulates on the white dwarf, hydrogen ignites, causing a thermonuclear explosion—but not a violent enough one to eject material.

If the latter hypothesis is correct, then millinovae may play a crucial role in astrophysics. As a white dwarf grows in mass, it can eventually reach a critical threshold (about 1.4 solar masses), at which point it may explode as a Type Ia supernova.

Astronomers use Type Ia supernovae as standard candles for measuring cosmic distances. In particular, observations of Type Ia supernovae led to the discovery of accelerating expansion of the Universe, a finding that won the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics. However, the exact progenitors of Type Ia supernovae remain unknown.

The visual that was unfolding below the ship's navigation window of the eighth uncovered Insurgent home-base fit the basic specs for the last seven of them. The visual that, too, confirmed the redacted, violently-acquired data had within it some legitimate implications, was also, if nothing else, a relief to see in person for the S.I. Captain of the starship Mountainbreaker.

Earth Military's past encounters to ferret out these militia by the root had turned up nothing but empty settlements. Despite the lack of discovered bodies, and the abandoned functioning structures showing no sign of having cut any corners for human habitation. Earth had sent in suppression teams. Oo-ra junkies. Their missions a siren of a red flag that any resourceful operation could see coming a lightyear away.

Yesterday, a tech-driven rally powered the S&P 500 up 0.5% and the Nasdaq 100 1.1% higher.

As was the case on Tuesday, investors dumped safe stocks that had been doing well while beaten-down parts of the market caught a bid. Tech was the best-performing S&P 500 sector ETF, while consumer staples was at the bottom of the leaderboard with a sharp retreat.

It’s not about the tariffs anymore

Sure, the near 10% sell-off of the S&P 500 came right around the time that Washington began making swift and significant moves on tariffs, but there’s a bit of a pickle you get into when trying to chalk up the sell-off to tariff talk alone. In short: if this is actually about tariffs, why are some of the most tariff-vulnerable stocks in the market doing just dandy, all things considered?

Instead what we’re seeing is AI-linked momentum stocks tumbling, financials falling, credit spreads widening, cyclicals falling off the axel, and crypto in a rut. Meanwhile, GM and Ford — two companies that would be categorically screwed by tariffs — are both up since the February 19 market close. You’re going to have a hard time arguing that the market is in freefall over tariffs, except naturally for the stocks actually affected by tariffs, which are holding steady, because what, they and only they were pricing in tariffs? That’s a bit of a stretch, yeah?

So, what gives?

“What quantitative easing accomplishes is that it offers a signal to the market that monetary policy is locking in to a prolonged period of providing support for the economy and financial system. Simply, if the Federal Reserve is buying bonds, it’s a helluva long way from raising rates.

To compare this to tariffs, every minute US President Donald Trump spends musing about tariffs is a minute he isn’t talking about deregulation or tax cuts. It’s a revealed preference on where his priorities lie. It’s a signal that policy is not pointed in a pro-growth direction. And he is talking about tariffs. A lot.”

For the past several decades, the policy of the US president has been economic growth. We’ve had direct statements from leadership indicating that this is not the case, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent straight up saying the stock market is not the administration’s report card, for now.

Rather, things that would work counter to growth — among them, reduced government spending — are the policy, and if you’re a US stock bull listening really hard for words like “deregulation” or “tax cuts” and instead you’re hearing “tariffs” and “tariffs” and “tariffs” and then “tariffs” once more for good measure, well, maybe that’s what’s at the core of the sell-off.

The Shinigami within the Soul Society knew what was coming—the Wandenreich had finally arrived. Their invasion, swift and brutal, sent shockwaves through the very core of the Gotei 13. Beneath the shadow of this looming threat, Luna stood at the precipice of her fate, her heart heavy with a conflict greater than the battle that had begun to unfold around her.

"Prepare yourselves!" bellowed the authoritative voice of Captain Yamamoto, his fiery presence felt even before his words echoed through the barracks of the 1st Division.

The Shinigami scrambled to their designated posts, tension winding through the streets like a coiled serpent, ready to strike. Rukia Kuchiki, alongside several other high-ranking officers, moved swiftly toward their assigned bases, under the assumption that the main combatants of the Wandenreich were gathering around the Reishi pillars. Though confident, there was a foreboding sense of uncertainty among them, the overwhelming enemy presence looming larger than anything they had previously faced.

Inside the 1st Division barracks, the venerable Yamamoto glanced at Luna, his weathered eyes betraying no hint of hesitation, yet an unspoken tenderness lingered in his gaze. He had watched Luna grow, had guided her path, and now, he felt the unbearable weight of what was to come.

"Luna," he began, his voice deep, almost paternal, "you must be ready. But remember—your time to act is not yet. There is a larger role you must play."

Luna, her breath shallow, nodded. But inside, turmoil churned. She had found a brief moment of peace, of happiness even, amid the chaos of her life, and now it felt as though that solace was slipping through her fingers. Duty and destiny called, demanding everything she had left to give. Would she be strong enough to walk away from everything she had gained? From everyone she had come to care for?

“I understand, Yamamoto-tachio,” she whispered, though her heart ached at the thought.

As she braced herself, word arrived of an approaching force. Izuru Kira, along with Rikū Togakushi, Taketsuna Gori, and Asuka Katakura, awaited their analysis of the strange pillars of Reishi. But before they could make sense of it, a shockwave of power erupted, followed by a horrifying sight—Bazz-B, one of the Sternritter, loomed above them. Without warning, a piercing Heilig Pfeil shot through Izuru’s torso, leaving nothing but a gaping, bloodied wound in his wake. The world seemed to slow down as Kira fell, life slipping from him like the sand through an hourglass. The other officers, desperate to retaliate, were cut down in moments by Bazz-B’s merciless assault.

"Let the purging begin!" proclaimed Haschwalth, his voice cold and final. "The Sternritter shall cleanse this world of the Shinigami."

Panic rippled through the Soul Society. News reached the 12th Division headquarters, where Akon, overseeing the battlefield's data, paled at the reports. "At least sixteen Sternritter…," he muttered, voice shaky. "In seven minutes, they’ve already killed over a thousand officers… We... we can’t win this."

In another corner of the Seireitei, Captain Byakuya Kuchiki clashed with Äs Nödt, a grim, menacing figure whose Spirit Weapon exuded an aura of fear so intense, it felt as though the very air trembled before it. Byakuya was calm, composed as always, refusing to believe that a power like fear could bring him to his knees. Senbonzakura danced in his hand, its petals sharp and precise, lacerating the flesh of Äs with terrifying grace.

"It’s not possible," Byakuya whispered, his eyes narrowing. "This power of yours cannot surpass the precision of my Senbonzakura."

However, as Senbonzakura’s petals rained down in perfect symmetry, Äs smiled darkly, his hand extending into the storm. Petal by petal, the weapon was destroyed before Byakuya’s eyes, crumbling to dust. Horror washed over the noble captain. His Bankai had been taken—not sealed, but stolen.

Nearby, Captains Komamura, Hitsugaya, and Suì-Fēng faced similar horrors. Their Bankai, the pride of their strength and skill, had been rendered useless. The enemy had brought out their Medallions, and with them, the power to steal a Shinigami’s most powerful weapon.

Renji, watching in stunned disbelief as Byakuya’s power faltered, gripped his own sword tightly. "How can we defeat them without Bankai?"

But before anyone could comprehend the full scope of what had transpired, Yamamoto's presence darkened the air like a thundercloud ready to burst. As his Reiatsu flared, the temperature around him rose dramatically. He knew this battle had escalated beyond control. His grip on his Zanpakutō tightened, and with a swift motion, his Bankai, Zanka no Tachi, was released.

"Luna," Yamamoto’s voice shook her from her reverie. He turned to her, the flames of his Bankai casting flickering shadows over his stern features. "Stay here. You are not to fight in this war."

His words hung in the air like a commandment. But Luna’s eyes, wide with shock and disbelief, flickered with defiance.

"No!" she shouted, taking a bold step forward. "If Ichigo’s Bankai can’t be stolen, neither can mine. This is my fight too!"

Yamamoto’s expression hardened, his authority as the head of the Gotei 13 practically radiating off of him. "You are more important than you know, Luna. This is not your role. You must not throw yourself into a battle that—"

"I can give us more time!" Luna interrupted, her voice desperate but firm. She could feel the weight of responsibility pressing down on her. If she could help, if she could slow the enemy down, even for a moment, she would do it. She had to.

Yamamoto’s eyes, now burning with frustration, followed her as she sprinted toward the battlefield. His hand stretched out instinctively, trying to call her back, but it was too late. Luna was already gone.

Luna’s heart raced as she neared the epicenter of the battle. Byakuya, barely standing, was being torn apart by his own Bankai under the ruthless control of Äs Nödt. His body, once a testament to strength and dignity, was shredded beyond recognition. Renji, desperate to protect his captain, unleashed his own Bankai—only to be met with a devastating kick from Mask de Masculine that sent him flying across the Seireitei.

Seeing the carnage unfold before her, Luna froze. Her mind screamed at her to act, but she hesitated. She could feel it—a shift in the air, a presence that made her stomach churn with dread. Yamamoto’s Bankai had been activated. She turned, horror-stricken, realizing what this meant.

As she ran back toward the 1st Division barracks, Yamamoto’s Reiatsu flared one final time before fading into a void of emptiness. The moment she arrived, she saw it—Yhwach, standing above the ruined body of the man who had been her mentor, her guide.

A wave of shock washed over her, paralyzing her where she stood. Yamamoto’s charred remains were all that remained of the man who had once been the foundation of the Gotei 13. Luna’s breath hitched in her throat. She wanted to scream, to cry out, but no sound came.

"Yhwach…" she whispered, her voice trembling with fury.

Before she could gather herself, Yhwach’s eyes locked onto her. "Ah, Luna. You’ve come to face your fate."

With a flicker of movement, Yhwach closed the distance between them, his immense spiritual pressure threatening to crush her. But Luna stood her ground. Her sword was already drawn, her soul pressure igniting like never before. She could feel the heat of her own power surging through her veins, pushing her forward.

"Yamamoto gave everything to protect this world," she spat, her voice shaking with rage. "I won’t let you take anything more from us."

Yhwach's cold gaze pierced through her. "You are strong, but strength means nothing in the face of inevitability."

Their swords clashed, the shockwave rippling through the very fabric of the Seireitei. Luna fought with everything she had, her movements swift and precise, fueled by her grief and rage. But Yhwach was relentless. In mere moments, he had overwhelmed her, stabbing her through the abdomen with his blade.

Her sword, which had held firm against many enemies, now lay cracked on the ground, reflecting the state of her own Reiatsu. Ichigo’s breath was labored, but his determination never wavered. Ichigo’s heart pounded in his chest. His mind swirled with fragmented memories of his mother, Masaki, and the brief conversations with his father about the truth of their lineage. But to hear it from Yhwach—a sworn enemy—was both chilling and infuriating. He gritted his teeth, suppressing the storm of emotions rising within him. Now was not the time to lose focus.

"Shut up!" Ichigo roared, charging forward. His blade, overflowing with spiritual energy, clashed violently with Yhwach's, creating shockwaves that rippled across the battlefield. The force of the impact sent sparks flying, but Yhwach barely moved, absorbing the blow with ease. He was amused, like a father entertaining the futile attempts of a rebellious child.

"You have no idea, do you? The truth about your mother, about your bloodline," Yhwach continued, effortlessly blocking Ichigo's strikes. "You were always destined for this. To be part of the Quincy. To be my child in the darkness."

Each of Yhwach's words felt like a hammer to Ichigo's spirit, but he refused to be beaten down. "I don't care about what you think I am! I choose my own path!" Ichigo's roar echoed through the broken city of Soul Society, but Yhwach only smirked, his eyes glinting with malicious intent.

Yhwach, seeing the struggle in Ichigo's eyes, decided to push further. "Why do you think your mother was killed? It was not a random Hollow attack, Ichigo. Her death was my doing. Masaki Kurosaki, a Quincy, was bound to die by my hand. She was too powerful, too dangerous for my plans." His voice carried the weight of centuries of bloodshed, each word dripping with malice.

Ichigo froze mid-strike, his blade inches from Yhwach's face. His mother—killed by Yhwach? The weight of this revelation nearly crushed him. His hand trembled, and his mind flashed back to his childhood, the happy moments with Masaki, the warmth of her smile. And now, to find out she had been a target, killed deliberately by this monster standing before him—it was too much to bear.

"You… killed her…" Ichigo's voice was low, shaking with a rage that threatened to tear him apart. "YOU KILLED MY MOTHER!" he screamed, lunging at Yhwach with renewed fury, his spiritual pressure spiking dangerously. Every fiber of his being wanted to obliterate Yhwach, to erase the existence of the man who had taken his mother from him.

But Yhwach, calm and collected, blocked the attack with a single hand. His strength was monstrous. "You are still not ready, Ichigo," Yhwach said, his voice steady. "But in time, you will understand. You will see the truth and join me. You cannot escape your destiny. You and Luna are my children—children of the darkness."

Luna, struggling to get to her feet, heard Yhwach's words. Her body ached with pain, but her spirit burned with fury. She couldn’t allow Yhwach to take Ichigo, to manipulate him. Staggering, she raised her hand, gathering what remained of her spiritual energy.

"No… Ichigo… don't listen to him!" Luna's voice cracked as she fought to stay conscious. "We… we choose who we are… not him!" She stumbled forward, trying to reach her brother.

Yhwach, sensing her defiance, looked down at her with mild amusement. "You’re persistent. But it doesn’t matter. Soon, both of you will understand that your wills mean nothing."

As Yhwach prepared to strike Ichigo down and take Luna with him, a sudden wave of shadows erupted from the ground. They twisted and coiled around Yhwach’s legs, forcing him to step back. His eyes narrowed in irritation. "The Schatten Bereich… so it’s time already."

Haschwalth, appearing next to Yhwach, calmly placed a hand on his shoulder. "We have overstayed. The Schatten Bereich is pulling us back."

Yhwach’s frustration was evident. He had wanted more time—time to break Ichigo, to take Luna. But the nature of the Schatten Bereich could not be ignored. If they stayed any longer, their connection to this world would sever, leaving them vulnerable.

Ichigo looked at her, his heart heavy with emotion. He had learned so much in such a short time—about his mother, about his own bloodline.
