This evenings hearty delights where brought to us courtesy of the rum and crab shack located on the harbour front in St Ives. The menu is a fusion of southern American cooking and good old Cornish seafood. Hearty home style cooking using fresh Cornish seafood and locally sourced ingredients. It all sounds great doesn’t it? But that’s where it ends. Sadly the food was slightly underwhelming and overpriced for what you got. It tasted ok and was all cooked well and presented well but I was expecting something a little more sensational. I’m afraid to say it just didn’t deliver! The venue itself is up on the first floor of a small shopping complex but is fairly spacious on the inside. The waiting staff where polite and friendly but there was only two of them so service was a little slow but that was not a major issue as we were in no rush. We had starters, mains and desserts. I had the popcorn shrimp which tasted really nice my only gripe was that there wasn’t enough of the creole mayonnaise to go with them. We had the meat sharing platter for two as a main. Not enough chips, the chicken strips where a little over cooked and dry and again on the small side. The coleslaw was very sweet, almost sickly which didn’t make it enjoyable. The tips here lovely and tender, juicy and succulent the meat fell off the bone. The Mac and cheese lacked the pulled pork it was said to come with and was not that creamy or cheesy! The last part of the meal was the desert of Cuban doughnuts and rum sundae. Both where very nice. The doughnuts where heavenly and not too sweet and sickly. So overall this wasn’t the best experience. Dinner, at the captains table restaurant tonight was quite exquisite. All three courses where fantastically executed with amazing flavours, presentation and freshness. The staff are friendly and polite. The restaurant itself is a comfortable, warm and inviting place to eat. It is intimate and small but this ads to overall experience. We are always being told what to do, where to go, how to behave and what to eat and drink. Particularly by jumped up little upstarts who have nothing else better to do other than prolifically trawl social media ready to throw in a witty comment or anecdote into an argument that doesn’t concern them. But that’s enough about me. Let’s get back the food. Now when was the last time you indulged in the dark side and chomped your way through a burger, kebab or pizza?? Can’t think! Well let me help you out. If it’s been a while and you have then urge then take yourself down to Embers Wood-fired Pizza Parlour in Padstow. Located in the back streets behind the main harbour side if offers tasty, unique and incredibly delicious pizza to go and to take away. The two of us, that’s me and my other half. Took ourselves down there for a spot of lunch while the in-laws indulged in that delicious of all Cornish delicacy’s the pasty. We ordered a large bowl of pulled pork nachos oozing with BBQ sauce, sour cream, salsa, guacamole and bubbling cheese. Padstow is one of those places, you have to see it to appreciate it. The sights, the smells, the sounds and the tastes. Combine them all and you have yourself a very good holiday destination. Yes it is fair to say that over time the place has changed some would argue not for the better. But for those looking for a glimpse of traditional Cornish life with a bit of the modern hustle and bustle of the big city thrown in then it’s a perfect place to experience. Over the years I have found myself in various parts of Cornwall at different times of the year. Summer, spring and even winter. Each time it has been glorious. It is though the food that draws me back to Cornwall. Not just the fabulous scenery and laid back pace of life. Depending on what you are looking for then there’s something for everyone. Despite popular misconceptions it’s not all Cornish pasties and mackerel fillets! Fresh beef, free range pork, organic chicken, luscious fruit and bountiful veg are all on offer. And it was these such ingredients that awaited me on my latest visit to this magnificent county. I was in Padstow for a family holiday, I’ve been many times before but not for a while so it was a pleasure to see new restaurants in the village. One of those fine diners was Barnaby’s of Padstow. Formerly the Victorian Tea Room, it has now been transferred into an intimate but trendy seafood and steak house serving traditional dishes with a modern and adventurous twist. On the face of it the menu looked fresh, vibrant and exciting. Advertised is a menu designed for sharing and it looked promising. The table was booked for 6pm.........
