I'm invested now, why cosmic horror for Donnie? Also could you tell me what cosmic horror is, I've never heard of it before.
-g
Cosmic horror is the type of horror that delves into how irrelevant we are in the grand scheme of the universe. It's basically existentialism as a genre! Key features include eldritch horrors, magic, and monsters beyond our comprehension. It is also sometimes called "Lovecraftian horror" after the author H.P. Lovecraft, who wrote iconic books such as The Call of Cthulhu and The Shadow Over Innsmouth. A big part of those stories is the concept of forbidden knowledge- that learning too much can lead to our downfall as humans, as there are some things that we simply are not supposed to know.
Really, choosing this genre for Donnie was a no-brainer. He has a never-ending thirst for knowledge, a need to understand everything around him. Putting him in a setting where he literally cannot understand what is going on around him- or where receiving the information he craves so badly would hinder rather than help him- would be the ultimate nightmare. Beings capable of destroying reality as we know it would be his biggest fear.
I also think it would be interesting if Donnie was the only one really impacted by this genre. He's the only turtle who has a special interest in research and data collection, so I'd like to think that the others would be mostly unphased by his particular fear. In comparison, I'd like to think that at least one other brother fears each of the other three genres; Leo and Mikey would dislike paranormal horror, Raph would dislike slashers, and I like to believe that all four brothers really don't like psychological horror. Donnie is sort of alone in that way.

1, 4, 13, 14 and 22 for the 🔥 ask game! Bloodborne fandom
1- You know already because i am an npc with 4 dialogue lines at max and i keep complaining about all the same stuff LMAO. But yeah. Definitely Maria. The majority of the fandom sees her as either 1) outright heroic or 2) as tragic but not in a way that gives her agency but in a "oooh le poor manipulated woman who didn't know what was going on" while still trying to potray her as a girlboss who takes no shit from no one which at best makes her look inconsistent at worst makes her look as dumb as rocks. Let your female chatacters be messy y'all!!. This is the one i have the most gripe on but also i dislike the "gehrman is a misogynistic creep who is worse than anyone else in the whole world because he had a mental breakdown after maria's death no matter the fact that there is a character who at best is involved in three different genocides." I also loathe the "Willem was right and did nothing wrong and didn't order the hamlet massacre". Another fan unfavourite of mine is when adeline is reduced as maria's flower loving cottagecore gf. But ig that's how fandom flanderization works 😔😔😔
4- Eeeeh,,,, i am really block trigger happy, so i either block 1) when someone is being rude as shit in the tags for having opinions different than theirs or 2) when a person's content starts to annoy me so much that i can't just scroll past it anymore
13- MARIAAAAAA--‐-- most maria fans just suck out any of her interesting and nuanced traits to reduce her to simply "rude girlboss whose favourite hobby is kissing adeline and also maybe cries about what she's done. If we actually remember that the fishing hamlet massacre was wrong" also brador but i wont go onto a rant about it lest a lightbulb explode in my room. Either way, for any character of bb. Please please please write the adult characters as adults and not le sillay teenagers they're all at best in their early thirties,,,,, (and also don't reduce them to a single fandom accepted trait)
14- Idk for this one i don't have much to complain about cause i am super selective about them 😭😭 I'd say the extreme hornyness but for me it's a bonus lol
22- Hmmmm,,,, it's a bit complicated for me to say? I guess that lately the whole cosmic horror aspect of it has been really downplayed- which is a shame if you compare the bb cosmic horror with the lovecraft one and how you see that bb can also work as a critique of lovecraft's racism and xenophobia. Right now the most common interpr is the femininity one which i am not opposed to but also one can hear it so many times (and without any analysis- just the same thing repeated by big youtubers without any spin of it) before getting sick + people who are super fervent about it keep insisting it's the ONLY interpretation which makes it soo annoying. Guys. Guys. Things can have more than one meaning if you want to act intellectual about it AT LEAST recognize the number one rule in academia/literary analysis 😭

Since you're the best SA2 fan, what's your favourite level music for each character? :>
SA2 has such unique track names for its OST <3 Sonic - Other than "Escape From the City," which is ofc a classic, Sonic's level themes don't strike me as particularly strong compared to the others. If I had to choose, I'd probably pick Pyramid Cave's "Keys the Ruin":
youtube
Certain songs in the SA2 OST have a very Bond-film groove to them, particularly in stages where you have to infiltrate a highly-fortified base (Iron Gate; Pyramid Cave; Security Hall) so naturally I gravitate towards them. :P
Tails - Prison Lane's "This Way Out." The drummer went so hard on that one xP
youtube
Eggman - It's difficult to choose just one, though for the opposite reason it's difficult to choose a single Sonic level theme. His level themes are decent at worst. Iron Gate's "Remember Me? M.F.M." has a certain Bond-movie swag, perfect for setting the mood to breach a maximum-security military facility. It also cleverly employs a wah-wah pedal to make the electric guitar sound like it's literally saying Eggman's name - how cool is that?
youtube
Sand Ocean's "Way to the Base" is decent and conveys the stage's overall mood well enough, but I honestly don't have a whole lot to say about it. Ditto for Weapons Bed's "Crush 'Em All" and Cosmic Wall's "Soarin' Over the Space."
Lost Colony's "Trespasser" perfectly sets the mood for exploring the ARK's dark, abandoned underbelly. I love how quietly the song begins, with a plethora of beeps and electronic chirps, as if to suggest the colony's general systems are still alive, if dormant.
An excellent remix:
youtube
Rouge - Security Hall's "I'm a Spy," baby! B)
youtube
Shadow - White Jungle's "Rhythm and Balance" is unique for a number of reasons.
youtube
It can't be forgotten that White Jungle marks the first time Shadow has explored the natural world on Earth: much of his surroundings are foreign to him. One of his idle animation quotes suggests that this unfamiliar location unsettles him ("Fog... doesn't bother me"). If it truly didn't bother him, he wouldn't have felt the need to point it out. The noticeable pause between "fog" and "doesn't" would imply the same. This sense of disorientation is reflected in the song's dreamlike quality. The lyrics are muffled, as though heard from underwater, or perhaps blunted by the roar of the nearby waterfall, contrasted by harsh record scratch and the barking of an unknown animal off in the distance. Cryptic lyrics like "Hurry through the unexplored land, not scared at all, are you scared of something?" reinforce Shadow's possible fear of the unknown, in tandem with his will to eliminate any obstacle in his path. What also makes this track very interesting imo is the fact that it is the only vocal track in which Shadow is directly addressed by another voice. Typically, his vocal themes are sung from his POV, but the sudden intrusion of another voice telling him "Shadow, don't make me upset" and "you are hiding something" introduces an additional layer of fridge horror. Who is becoming upset? Eggman? Shadow? Is this Gerald's reprogramming at work? "Rhythm and Balance" suggests Shadow is experiencing cognitive dissonance. It complements the previous cutscene in which he decides to save Rouge despite her being a "troublemaker," as well as introduces Shadow's internal conflict in an incredibly subtle manner: "I don't wanna hear you."
Knuckles - Aquatic Mine's "Dive into the Mellow" is a genuinely relaxing tune that I've often fallen asleep to. To quote a YouTube commenter, it sounds like something you'd hear on Adult Swim at 3 in the morning xP
youtube
Fun fact: it's also one of a handful of tracks on the DC disc that you had to download off the internet, as it wasn't natively included in the extras music menu. If you want to listen to it in the DC version, you have to actually play the stage. Death Chamber's "Deeper" deserves an honorable mention, too, for the interesting imaginary conversation in the chorus between Knuckles and Sonic:
youtube
Idk, I find it a little sad that Knuckles had to imagine Sonic, like... basically treating him with a little more decency? While there's always the possibility Knuckles is daydreaming because he's irritated that Sonic saddled him with this dangerous task without asking for his input, something tells me there's more to it than that. The overall vibe I get is that Knuckles wants Sonic's help and for Sonic to be a little more sensitive to his struggles, but he's too proud - or "stubborn," as the song puts it - to admit it. I find it interesting how the song almost implies Knuckles wishes Sonic were maybe a little more emotionally mature? Because Daydream!Sonic offers to help Knuckles recover the ME because he knows how much "it means to [Knuckles]" and to find the base keys together, despite their differences: "I don't think [our beef] is the point right now, Knuckles." In reality, however, Sonic buttered him up to go hunt for the keys because his lazy ass couldn't be bothered Knuckles is the "world's greatest treasure hunter" >.> Look, SA2!Sonic is a decent portrayal, but also, like. He could have stood to be a little nicer to Knuckles at certain points, imo

Hi! I'm sorry you all have had a stressful day. I'm not sure what to ask specifically. I'd love to hear about anyone's label collection. Or maybe anything new terms you all have found recently that you really like or are really excited about. :}
Jon: I'm still very excited about satelladeo. It's really nice to have a word for myself, species-wise, that's a bit more specific than simply "monster" and/or "nonhuman". I still need to work on my collection, particularly on formatting it, but I believe that satelladeo is one of my favourite terms from it. It's one of my favourites in general, honestly.
marius: i'm actually getting work done on mine hahahahaaha i'm trans in so many ways. and iso, and sens, and ad. the main page of it is mostly trans- terms it's great!!! i like transadromos a lot. it means "transitioning in one direction and then another" and i've transitioned so many different ways so many different times it really just fits really well
Cecil: not to self-promote but like. occunous. occunous is so self-indulgent and suits us and i so well and holy shit i love it. uhh my gender collection is a lot of things, but i've got it split into the categories, "main gender", "aesthetic", "cosmic horror", "decay, rot, & rebirth", "disability and neuro", "divinity and religion", "eyes", "food", "gore", "misc/other", "MOGAI and archives", "music & sounds", "neogender umbrellas", "nonhumanity, alterhumanity, plurality", "other media", "paranoia", "SCP", "TMA", "two-spirit", "weird & unreal", "words", and "zombies". being able to name the major parts of my identity is important to me. i'm also patchworkcurator so like, curating my collection is just as much a part of my gender as the labels themselves are, so organizing this stuff helps!!

Hi! Weird ask: but do you have any podcast recs where the voices are mainly British ? (Including Irish and Scottish). I know it’s silly but I like to have podcasts on in the background and I find American voices too distracting. I really like wooden overcoats , Magnus archives and the beef and dairy network. Thanks 😊
I do! Here's 20 podcasts from around the UK and Ireland that I've quite enjoyed:
The Amelia Project: Comedy. The Amelia Project is a secret organisation, highly specialised in faking people's deaths! A new client each episode, with their own wacky backstories, followed by the client and interviewer planning how to fake the death. Very funny and never a dull moment.
The Antique Shop: Urban Fantasy. Maya, a university student in desperate need of work, finds a part-time job at an old antique shop under the eye of the enigmatic Madam Norna and surrounded with items far from mundane. A new customer every episode, and a new item each time, every one as strange and interesting as the last.
I Am In Eskew: Horror. Tales from a man living in something which desperately wants to be a city, and from an investigator who was, in her words, hired to kill a ghost. Told with gentle voices and unending rain. Some of the most creative horror I've encountered, and I really enjoy the writing style too.
The Lost Cat Podcast: Horror (Cosmic, Soft), Weird Fiction(?). A man loses parts of himself, befriends strange entities, and drinks an awful lot of wine as he searches for his missing cat. Fun horror which values kindness and connection, with great writing which has always stuck with me but is also just the right amount of cliché to be very satisfying in the moment.
Lost Terminal: Sci-fi, Hopepunk. Gentle podcast about a lonely AI living in a space station as he contemplates life, learns more about the world around him, and makes friends. Really charming, great music, takes a respectful look into mental health (including anxiety, depression, ocd, did, loneliness) and talks about all kinds of fun topics like radio, D&D, orbital mechanics, and plants. Big favourite of mine.
Maps of the Lost: Supernatural, New Weird(?), Urban Fantasy, Light Horror. A guidebook style podcast to the strange happenings, people, places, and creatures around the UK. A few of these per episode in an almost microfiction format, all really fun and creative, and read in a wonderfully soothing voice.
Middle:Below: Supernatural, Mystery, Adventure, Comedy & Horror Elements. Ghost adventures! Humans Taylor and Heather, Gil the Ghost, and occasionally Sans the Cat travel to the Below, the land of ghosts, to solve mysteries and to help or contain the spirits that live there. This one makes me feel a bit like a kid again, it's very fun and has really crisp audio.
Modem Prometheus: Urban Fantasy, (Horror?). From the same team as Lost Terminal, this is a newer podcast featuring 'modern folktales', stories which feel like myths but are set in the city in the modern day. Each one tells it's own story, but in a shared world established by subtle consistant elements and sneaky references to the other tales. Good audio, music, writing, and I like the narrator's voice.
Monstrous Agonies: Supernatural. "Agony Aunt" radio show (where listeners can write in with their problems and receive advice), but for the supernatural in a modern world where humans, former humans, and people who were never human, live together. Featuring one of the most soothing voices in audio drama, really well written, supportive, full of fantastic advice, and very queer. Another big favourite of mine.
Murray Mysteries: Comedy, Supernatural. A queer, comedic, modern, and delightfully faithful adaptation of Dracula. Taking the form of Mina's podcast, I really enjoy how it's subtley altered the characters to fit a modern setting.
Neighbourly: Horror, Supernatural, (New Weird?), Some Sci-Fi Elements. Welcome to Little Street, where behind each door lives one or more residents with their own strange lives and curious secrets. Narrator has a great voice and you can never be quite sure what flavour of strangeness you'll be in for.
The Orphans: Sci-Fi, Thriller, (Horror?): While I could spoil this podcast and it'd still be great, I'm not going to. I will say it's a very well made, far future sci-fi featuring AI, unethical science, quality worldbuilding, heart-crushing tragedies, and a dash of political intrigue.
The Petrol Station: Horror. A short podcast featuring stories of the weird encounters of a petrol station attendant living in an isolated British village. If you enjoyed TMA, you'll probably like this a lot as well, it's very well written and I have all my fingers crossed for new episodes.
The Secret of St Kilda: Mystery? Thriller-ish? Cult Horror? Unsure. Podcast about a former conman who moves to the mysterious island of St Kilda, fleeing his past and into the arms of the strange island cult, who both think they need him, and deeply distrust him.
Spirit Box Radio: Supernatural, Mystery, Horror Elements. After the famous and supposedly powerful radio psychic Madam Marie goes missing, her enthusiastic young assistant takes over in her place. The first, but certainly not only, problem is he's never had much talent for the arcane before... Not that he can remember learning much to begin with, anyway.
Tartarus: Horror, Sci-Fi. An astrobiologist gets a job at a research facility in Antarctica which isn't quite what she'd expected. Along with the tearse station manager, and facility AI, she finds herself now responsible for protecting humanity from the monsters contained within. Really new but full of promise, looking forward to seeing where it goes.
The Tower: New Weird? Magical Realism? Idk. Short, meditative podcast about a young woman who decides to climb a seemingly endless tower. Modern setting with it's own delightful ancient lore. Fantastic music, quality soundwork, strange, reflective and enchanting. By the same folks as Middle:Below (Above).
VAST Horizon: Sci-Fi (space), Horror, Thriller(?). An agronomist tasked with kickstarting agriculture on a new world wakes on the ship before they arrive, to discover something has gone horribly wrong. The ship is adrift and riddled with issues, and nobody but the malfuctioning AI is left aboard... Right? She must do her best to save the ship and herself, and work out what happened. Stellar piece of audio by Fool & Scholar, who also do arctic horror podcast The White Vault, which has a very international cast and also highly recommended.
Victoriocity: Mystery, Adventure, Steampunk, Comedy. In an alternate steampunk 1887 London, an inspector and a journalist team up to solve a bizzare mystery, possibly even a conspiracy. Full cast, great sound design, full of wacky characters.
We Fix Space Junk: Sci-fi, Comedy, Adventure. An interstellar repairwoman, her AI best friend, and their brand new fugitive socialite assistant travel the stars to complete various tasks at the behest of the evil monolith of a company they are in debt to. A new job every episode, full cast, crisp audio and sound design.
I hope you can find one here which appeals to you!

Hi!
I have seen you are into podcasts? I wanted to try consuming some stories in this media format because I am curious... however, I do not know much.
Do you have any suggestions?
Thank you!
Okay, so I don't know what kind of genres or stories you might like or be looking for, but the majority of podcasts I'm familiar with and can recommend are mainly horror, or have horror elements. So, fair warning there. (Most podcasts on this list include trigger warnings in the episode descriptions too)
The Penumbra Podcast- I'd say this is a good, safe starting point to see if you like consuming stories in podcasts. The first season started out as an anthology series for a variety of stories, ranging from sci-fi noir detective mysteries, swashbuckling westerns, haunted houses, knights slaying monsters, etc. The main premise of the podcast is "stories you've heard before told in ways you'd never expect".
There are two reoccurring storylines, Juno Steel (sci-fi/noir) and the Second Citadel (fantasy/adventure) that the show focuses on more so as it goes on and drifts away from the anthology format, but you can choose to just focus on one and come back to the other later, as the two stories are completely seperate from each other and don't need to be listened to understand the other. Same if you don't want to listen to the horror anthology episodes like Shaken and Home and would rather skip them over (though they are fantastic if you do like horror). It's very engaging, fun, diverse and energetic, and excellent voice acting and sound design. Just a good time all round.
Currently there's three complete seasons out, episode runtime ranging 30-45 minutes and a currently ongoing series. Here's the teaser:
Alice Isn't Dead- So this is just a firm favorite of mine in podcasts, hell, it's one of my favorite stories in general.  Keisha, the narrator – a truck driver who is driving across America, delivery to delivery, is looking for her missing wife, Alice. We listen to her speak into the truck radio, partially musing to herself, partially addressing Alice as though she is leaving her a voicemail describing her travels and the bleakness of the road ahead – and worse, the potential of what follows her. It's a horror, a psychological thriller and a mystery, told in short, sharp chapters. The way in which the story is told makes excellent use of the audio medium and actively incorporates it into how the story at hand is being told, which I just adore when podcasts do. (There's a book version out and it just doesn't quite hit the same mark as it does in podcast format). In general it makes for a very intense and intimate experience that just keeps you hooked all the way through.
The story is complete at three seasons with 30 episodes each with a 20 minute runtime.
The Magnus Archives- If you follow me, or if you've been on Tumblr in general, you might already have a vague awareness of this series because of how popular it is, and for good reason too. It's a completed slowburn 200 episode cosmic horror/tragedy/drama that at it's core is an anthology series, every episode being a seemingly self contained short horror story.
Given as "statements" by people who have had paranormal or esoteric encounters to the Magnus Institute based in London, which is dedicated to researching such things, is then recorded onto tapes by the narrator and protagonist Jonathan Sims, (one of my favourite tragic heroes) the newly appointed Head Archivist after his predecessors mysterious death, who appears to have purposefully disorganized the Archives, much to his annoyance. But then patterns begin to occur within the statements, characters and previous statement givers appear in other's stories as they intersect like a huge web, and it's clear that there's something much larger and sinister at play as an overarching narrative comes into view that then draws the Archivist in.
Similar to Alice Isn't Dead, the Magnus Archives makes use of the audio medium and actively incorporates it into how it tells the story with how every statement is recorded onto tapes, as well as the events of the strange happenings in the Archives that the main characters (the Archivist, his research team, and the head of the Magnus Institute) experience themselves. Though without spoiling anything, the tapes themselves have a far more relevant and a active role in not just telling the story, but as the story and world itself.
This was a passion project for the writer, Jonathan Sims, (yes that is the name of the main character which he also voices, yes it is confusing) for a long time, and you can absolutely tell with how planned out the meta plot and intricate lore is, as well as just the quality of the writing in general. It covers all kinds of horrors and explores the concept of human fear itself, our personal relationship to it, which ties into the themes of agency and humanity the series also explores.
(trailer starts at 1:00)
The Silt Verses-
Let Me Speak First of Revelations
And Next of Dark Deceit
Then I'll Speak of Champions
Of Lovers, Gods and Beasts
My Song is Long and Twisted
It Winds, it Worms, It Rends
It Carries Few, It Drowns Many
And Those I Love, It Rends
This podcast is a fairly recent newcomer compared to the rest on the list, the first season is still ongoing, with only nine episodes out so far out of its fourteen with a season two planned ahead as well (with a roughly 40 minute episode runtime) but is absolutely divine. I'm genuinely frustrated that I'm not articulate enough to properly describe just how clever this series is, and can't recommend it enough.
A folk horror/religious fantasy serial drama that follows Carpenter and Faulkner, two river worshippers of an outlawed god, travelling up the length of their deities great black river, in search of revelations. As their pilgrimage lengthens and the river’s mysteries deepen, the two acolytes find themselves under threat from a police manhunt, but also come into conflict with the weirder gods that have flourished in these forgotten rural territories.
If you like themes of religious existentialism, how capitalism will commodify everything once deemed sacred, the indescribable horrors that arise from religious fanaticism/cults, rich lore and world building and complex morally grey protagonists who act as fascinating character foils to one another, lyrical and poetic narration, an eerie atmosphere, and don't mind the occasional intense scenes of body horror, you will love this podcast.
Oh, and crabs.
(I would also highly recommend I Am in Eskew by the same writer, his previous and completed podcast at 30 episodes, about a man living day to day within the monstrous city Eskew, but as an overall story and characters the Silt Verses is the much stronger of the two.)

Movies I watched in September
I skipped a month again. But not to worry. This is a wrap-up of all the movies I watched in the month of September (2021). I think I maintained a steady ratio throughout but perhaps there’s not as much on the list this time because I wanted to get on with other things, be that work-wise or just trying to get out to the beach as much as possible and make the most of the last dregs of summertime. I went swimming in the sea a lot! But I also got to catch the new James Wan movie, Malignant (twice!) as well as the new James Bond, No Time To Die. Not to mention a couple of classics! My hope again with this list is to introduce people to new movies that they may otherwise not have seen or perhaps have never have heard of. These short reviews are my own subjective opinions on each individual movie. I’m thinking maybe a more informal approach to movie criticism can help include others who are just passing through. So here is every film I watched from the 1st to the 30th of September.
Fanny and Alexander (1982) - 8/10
Coming from Ingmar Bergman, I was surprised to see just how warm this was. I’m a big fan of the Swedish director and while this isn’t my favourite from him (perhaps due to it needing a second watch, or the fact I watched it in three chunks because it’s about three hours long and I overestimated how much time I had in the day) it’s still an interesting departure from what I’ve come to expect from him. Fanny and Alexander is a dreamy Christmassy movie that presents an overarching theme of love, spending a large portion of its runtime just hanging out with this big family on Christmas and showing how close they are. I would love to watch this again at some point in December and see how my opinion shifts but for now, while it could meandre in places, I can’t deny how unique a movie it is.
Tumblr media
Another Round (2021) - 10/10
I had seen Thomas Vinterberg’s latest film before this point but this was the first time I got to see it in a cinema. Luckily for me my local independent cinema was showing it one night and while they had a few technical hiccups with setting everything up, the movie itself was still fantastic. Following a handful of school teachers who experiment with whether they can maintain a certain level of blood alcohol throughout the day, Another Round demonstrates a sense of unease and sadness throughout an otherwise comedic tone. These emotions are balanced perfectly, boosting an already intriguing concept that examines our relationship with alcohol from every angle.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) - 4/10
Straight after Another Round, I made my way to the chain cinema to meet up with friends to see the new Marvel movie. At this point, having had my second dose of the Covid vaccine that morning, I was starting to feel the effects and I was not doing well. But I watched the movie anyway, all the while wanting to be in bed. Shang-Chi was massively underwhelming and I’d go as far as to say it was even incompetent. Truth be told,  I like the Marvel Cinematic Universe but from the get-go I already wasn’t hyped for this movie and I was expecting it to be about mediocre but what I got was something a lot worse. I won’t rehash what I’ve already said on this film so if you want to hear me rant about it a bit then I would recommend checking out episode 47 of my podcast, The Sunday Movie Marathon.
Your Name. (2016) - 6/10
Ultimately this was a fun little romance movie but I can’t say I understand why people adore it, nor do I understand why it needed to be animated. For what it’s worth, I found it cute and entertaining but nothing much jumped out to me.
Phil Wang: Philly Philly Wang Wang (2021) - 7/10
I’m always stumped on what to say about stand-up shows. It was good! I enjoyed Phil Wang talking about different things in a funny way and it got some laughs out of me. Admittedly I’m writing this a couple of weeks after watching it but it’s certainly a decent way to spend an hour if you’re looking for something light and fun.
The Lego Batman Movie (2017) - 6/10
I remember seeing this in the cinema with two of my friends and the theatre wasn’t exactly packed but those that were there were either children or parents. But I like The Lego Batman Movie! Clearly this was made by fans of the character as it’s packed with a lot of details and references from old comic runs but as someone who has never read the comics or seen those older movies, it still managed to be entertaining and while I won’t say it’s quite as good as The Lego Movie, the animation is still top notch and the voice actors are certainly giving it their all, especially Will Arnett as the titular character. It’s just a bit of fun!
Tumblr media
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) - 10/10
A friend of mine told me to go to the screening of Terminator 2 at my local because they themselves weren’t able to attend. The first Terminator movie is a real gem and one of the most 80’s-type movies I’ve ever seen. I was excited to watch T2, remembering next to nothing about what I watched of it when I was a child. So it was just me in this screening, with one person in a row in front of me, and one other person behind me. If I had it my way, I would have been the only person there because this is honestly one of the best movies I’ve ever seen and it was very hard not to yell out every time something incredible happened, especially when it’s so action-packed and basically goes all out at every opportunity to deliver some of the most jaw-dropping effects or choreography. Truly there is never a dull moment and I was grinning like a lunatic the entire time. This film rocks!
Mirror (1975) - 7/10
Andrei Tarkovsky is one of my favourite directors and the new Criterion release of his film, Mirror, had been on my shelf for a while. My friend and fellow podcast co-host, Chris, was also interested in watching this movie so we decided we’d give it a watch and review it on the podcast. But this is such a weirdly structured film that the entire way through, neither of us knew what on earth was happening. What we got from the experience is reflected in the episode we made and I would love to watch this again at some point, hopefully with more context and a better understanding of what I’m in for. But in the meantime, you can hear the discussion on episode 46 of the podcast.
The Night House (2021) - 6/10
The Night House is David Bruckner’s follow-up to his previous movie, The Ritual and while I’ll say I prefer The Ritual, this is still a decent watch, just don’t go in expecting horror. More of my thoughts can be found in episode 46 of the podcast.
The Ritual (2017) - 7/10
After watching The Night House, I decided to go back to the director’s previous film, The Ritual and I got a lot more out of it this time around. Themes of guilt and grief permeate the movie and the result is this weird and unnerving film about a group of guys who go hiking in Sweden after the death of one of their friends and encounter dark forces beyond their comprehension. It can be drawn out at times and probably could have been boosted with a better script but there are so many interesting and strange ideas presented that culminate in a haunting third act that it’s worth watching just to see what on earth they’re being hunted by.
Tumblr media
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) - 10/10
Straight after recording an episode about our favourite movies on the podcast, I returned to one of my all-time favourites. Holy Grail is such a fantastically funny movie with so many memorable lines and moments that it’s become a staple in the comedy genre. Setting it in Arthurian England is a surefire way to make sure it stands the test of time, making use of the budget in a way that heightens the comedy, for example: not being able to get horses and so resorting to having a man banging two coconut halves together as they skip through the grassy terrain. It’s the writing that really takes centre stage here; the guys from Monty Python were/are geniuses. A couple more points were made on my podcast so please do listen to that to hear more: Episode 46 of The Sunday Movie Marathon
Malignant (2021) - 7/10
The new James Wan movie was bonkers! I saw this one twice in quick succession without hesitation. To find out why I love it so much, listen to episode 47 of the podcast.
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) - 8/10
We got a marathon of the first three Nightmare on Elm Street movies on the podcast so we watched them in quick succession within a day. This first movie is a true masterpiece of its time. For more insight, listen to episode 47 of the podcast.
A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985) - 2/10
Quite an embarrassing departure from the genius and fun of the original. Elm Street 2 is not only technically unfulfilling but a wholly unentertaining movie to boot. More thoughts in episode 47 of the podcast.
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987) - 3/10
While only a few hairs better than its predecessor, Elm Street 3 is still a mere shadow of the original. All in all, these second and third instalments in the franchise have put me off watching any of the others. More thoughts in episode 47 of the podcast.

Her (2013) - 10/10
Her is at once a beautiful love story between a man and an AI, and a scarily accurate look at how technology is expanding and moving forward. It uses warm colours and smooth camera work to create something that feels homely and safe, juxtaposing the often cold and dark feeling of science-fiction films to tell an intrinsically human story. What would it be like to go through this and what are the hurdles that need to be overcome? Her is a masterpiece of filmmaking and it left me emotionally exhausted in all the right ways.
Alien (1979) - 10/10
First time I’ve seen Alien in the cinema (as I was too busy not being born yet to see it on an initial release) and it was amazing! This is cosmic horror at its best. With all the eerie sound design, slow and deliberate camera movement, and outstanding effects, there’s no wonder as to why this is considered one of the greats and seeing it on the big screen was enthralling.
Aliens (1986) - 8/10
I had never seen Aliens before so the opportunity to see it for the first time in a cinema was one I could not pass up, especially since I was able to see it straight after the first. This is more of an action movie than the first one and as that, it was really something to see. While I don’t think it quite measures up to the original, James Cameron does bring a style to it that makes it something completely different while still feeling in line with its predecessor. A problem I’ve found as time goes on is that I don’t find myself thinking much about Aliens whatsoever and that’s probably down to its characters who generally I found quite weak. I’m already not big on standard action flicks and this is a clear cut above those but it does still fall victim to the trappings. That being said, I would in no way call this bad or even mediocre because it was a lot fun and being able to see it in the cinema is an experience I’m very grateful for.
Gunpowder Milkshake (2021) - 6/10
Gunpowder Milkshake is trying very hard to be John Wick and although it never really manages it, there is still fun to be had with its action (because really that’s all this movie has to offer). There’s a very creative scene in which Karen Gillan has to fight some goons in a hospital with a gun taped to one hand and a scalpel taped to the other, with the caveat being that her arms don’t work. Despite that and a good enough performance from Gillan, the rest is very goofy, with a villain about as intriguing as an advert for life insurance and a story that to say the least, leaves much to be desired.
Tumblr media
I Lost My Body (2019) - 10/10
Another one for the podcast, I Lost My Body is a glorious cerebral animated piece that hits every nerve in my body. Listen to episode 48 for more.
Alice In Wonderland (1951) - 10/10
Perhaps the best early Disney movie in my humble opinion. Alice In Wonderland is complete insanity, doing things simply for the sake of it in a beguiling dreamlike take on Lewis Carroll’s classic book. Listen to episode 48 of The Sunday Movie Marathon for more.
WALL-E (2008) - 9/10
WALL-E is one of Pixar’s best. It is a cautionary tale of where the world is headed wrapped in a sweet story about going to the ends of the solar system in order to help those you love. I do however have one big problem with this movie and you can find out more in episode 48 of the podcast.
Killing Them Softly (2012) - 6/10
A lot about America’s economy at the time, Killing Them Softly goes about showing the lengths people will go to for money and yes it is generally solid with a fantastic speech by Brad Pitt to cap it off, but it cannot avoid meandering scenes of listless dialogue that neither engage me nor make me care about the characters it presents.
Tumblr media
The Dirties (2013) - 6/10
Funny! The Dirties is a mockumentary about two guys making a movie about bullies in their school. While often it was generally chugging along and making me laugh, it tended to err on the side of plain as regards its presentation. A lot of scenes happen for the sake of it and in a movie that’s around an hour and twenty, it’s amazing I still managed to dip out in the latter half. More thoughts in episode 49 of the podcast.
Telstar: The Joe Meek Story (2009) - 3/10
Ah, I really hated this. I don’t even want to talk about it anymore. Just listen to episode 49 of the podcast to hear what I had to say.
Blade Runner 2049 (2017) - 10/10
This is my favourite movie! I got to talk about it on my podcast! Listen to episode 49 of The Sunday Movie Marathon to hear what I have to say!
No Time To Die (2021) - 8/10
Best Bond movie? Perhaps. I’ve not seen every Bond movie but of the ones I have seen (which does include all of Daniel Craig’s run), this is as good as it gets. Despite a near three hour runtime, No Time To Die felt as though it wasted very little. I’ve always complained that I could never follow the plot to these movies because often I simply didn’t care about it; for me it’s more about the action and seeing Daniel Craig be James Bond. No Time To Die does not escape some of the general tropes that often don’t leave me thinking I’ve watched something masterful but what I will say in its favour is that it’s fucking fun! Don’t expect to love it if you already dislike these movies because generally it stays in the same vein as the others before it, but for Bond fans it’s something totally enjoyable. Captivating cinematography, biting fight choreography and action set-pieces, a core struggle for James who actually goes through relatable hardships his time round, coping with being part of a family and trying to keep them safe.
I was happy to see a bit more attention paid to female characters this go round; in a franchise that often glamorizes Bond’s sexual promiscuity and ability to woo any woman he likes, it was much more refreshing to see that he often did need help from a lot of badass, well written female characters.
No Time To Die has been waiting to be released for a long time now and now it’s actually out, I’m pleased it’s not hot garbage. In fact, quite the opposite is true. The final swan song for Craig’s fifteen-year tenure as one of cinema’s most recognisable heroes outdoes all that came before it. Bravo.

What are your favourite subclasses/schools/colleges/ways etc within each class (you don’t have to do all of them! Just the ones that come to mind or you have feelings about)
oh BOY ANON LET’S GO THERE
okay so first off, the School of Divination Wizard. this one jumped to mind immediately because I’m playing one right now, and i love her. the main thing this subclass has going for it is it’s special Portent ability, where you get to roll 2 d20s once per long rest and replace any roll by any character that you can see with that roll. so, up against a really nasty demon and want to hit it with Polymorph? give it that 3 you rolled on your portent this morning on its saving throw and make sure the spell sticks. absolutely need to make sure your Barbarian doesn’t get charmed and start attacking the party? give him the 16 you rolled this morning so you can be sure he passes. it’s so clutch and it makes you feel so powerful.
i also adore the Inquisitive Rogue. this is a Xanathar’s subclass for the rogue, and it lends a different flavor to rogues that I really like, as someone who likes doing sneak attack but also likes playing good-aligned characters that don’t want to be labelled a “thief” or an “assassin.” I get to play a detective and do 4d6 damage just by making a successful insight check? sign me the fuck up! also, as a player I’m kind of obsessed with knowing things–i never want to dump wisdom or intelligence because I want to make sure i can get those good insight checks and arcana checks in. so Inquisitive works really well for me and is just a very easy headspace for me to slip into. my Inquisitive Rogue Marigold is probably my favorite character I’ve ever played. when i played her at level 12 for a one-shot she had 25 passive perception.
i also feel very strongly that the Great Old One Warlock is underrated. for starters, the storytelling potential is phenomenal. sure, it’s fun to have a patron who’s actively interested in you and toying with you, but it is also so fun to have encountered a being so great and terrible that it fundamentally changed the way you interact with the world, but your patron probably won’t even notice your existence until you’re like level 15, if it notices you at all. and then mechanically–you get telepathy!!! holy shit!!! how kickass is that!!! and you get access to all these fucked up eldritch spells!!! LOVE to have a cosmic horror as a patron.
little bit of bias here because I’ve never seen the other subclasses in action, but I played an Artillerist Artificer in a one-shot recently (side-note, it was a Christmas one-shot and my character was a hafling child named Kev McAllister) and i LOVED that eldritch cannon. the customizability, the fact that it can walk around on its own, the fact that it only takes an action to build–that rules. and it can do some serious damage!
now getting into subclasses I’ve never actually played but love the idea of, Oath of Redemption Paladin. first off, any backstory that leads you to take that oath is absolutely beautiful and absolutely My Shit. bonus points if you were another class first and then have a big moment and start taking paladin levels…holy shit. holy shit. it also provides a fun challenge to be playing this class that’s typically known for its martial prowess and ability to do crazy amounts of damage and be actively trying to avoid battle. I don’t know if i’d ever actually want to play a Redemption paladin just because i actually love combat and am pretty much always Down To Fight but oh boy do i love the idea of them.
on the other hand, a class that i would love to play and am in fact low-key obsessed with is the Horizon Walker Ranger. i adore the DnD planar system, and an entire subclass that’s built around travelling between them??? that fucking RULES!!! yeah, i’m just casually phasing through the Ethereal Plane, what about it? yeah, i’m friends with a bunch of gods and “benevolent dragons, fey, and elementals” that protect goodness in the multiverse, do you have a problem? “venturing to the Inner Planes and Outer Planes as needed to pursue their foes” SOMEONE PLEASE LET ME PLAY IN A CAMPAIGN WHERE A HORIZON WALKER RANGER MAKES SENSE. I KNOW IT REQUIRES A VERY SPECIFIC TYPE OF CAMPAIGN BUT. PLEASE.
I love a good Light Domain Cleric because it both plays off the “light in the darkness” imagery that’s personally really important to me, but it also explores the side of light that is burning and ferocious and damaging and terrifying. radiant damage is…..very cool. but then I also really love “atypical” cleric domains–in particular, Knowledge and Trickery. the 4e deity Avandra, goddess of luck, is one of my absolute favorites, and I would love to play a trickery cleric of her sometime, and I also really like the idea of seeing “knowledge is power” coming to play in an extremely literal way. and that Channel Divinity “Read Thoughts” is cool as FUCK.
i’ve never seen the Battle Master Fighter in action but I think they’re super cool. I really like subclasses and classes that do a lot of damage but have some fun other options for you do to as well–so monks, rogues, paladins, etc. Battle Masters fit that well, and I like the manuevers that let you buff the rest of your party. Plus, my love of knowing things about the world around me and the NPCs around me kicks in with that 7th level feature.
those are all the ones I have strong feelings about. i love monks but i don’t have strong feelings about any of the subclasses over the others, although that desire to Know Everything definitely makes Matt Mercer’s Cobalt Soul subclass very appealing to me. I also like the Zealot Barbarian and the Divine Soul Sorcerer just because I like characters who interact with divine powers so much and I think the sorcerer in particular can add this super cool “i don’t need the church i’ve got the gods IN ME” flavor that i would love to see played out in the game.
bards and druids are my least favorite classes to play so i don’t have many opinions on them, but I do think Circle of the Moon Druids are very cool and useful to have in the party, and i like the College of Valor Bard a lot because it lends itself well to the “battle poets” from Celtic folklore which is a particular academic interest of mine, and what did i spend thousands of dollars on a college degree on if not to use it to enhance my Dungeons and Dragons game? plus the ability to use Inspiration on a damage dice is *chef’s kiss.*

Gimme all the book recs Please :D
yaaaaaaaaaaaas okay great. i love sharing books i love.
1. The Thief of Always - Clive BarkerGenre: Dark FantasyBig personal favorite of mine. My father read this to me when I was a kid, and it literally has stuck with me since then. Every now and then I go back and reread it just for fun. It’s a wonderfully spooky little story, accompanied by some really lovely and somewhat off-kilter illustrations. Much like Coraline, it’s a novel that is a fable for children, and a tale of terror for adults.
After a mysterious stranger promises to end his boredom with a trip to the magical Holiday House, ten-year-old Harvey learns that his fun has a high price.
2. House of Leaves - Mark Z. DanielewskiGenre: Postmodernism, horrorHands down an absolute favorite. This is a book I literally recommend to everyone. This is a book that made me viscerally uncomfortable, at times I didn’t even sleep in the same room as it. I made it sleep in the living room. There is nothing overtly terrifying about the book, but its format and its unsettlingly immersive nature will lead you down a road unlike any other.
In 1997, Johnny Truant has stumbled upon a chest full of scrap papers that had once belonged to a man named Zampono. The papers aren’t just scraps though, they’re a chaotic but detailed transcription of a series called the Navidson Record. The Navidson Record is a series of videos made by a family who has discovered that their new house appears to change dimensions almost daily, it has hallways that shouldn’t exist, doors that should lead outside but instead lead into nothingness. Johnny attempts to re-order and reconstruct Zampono’s papers, and along the way begins to lose himself as well.
3. The Postmortal - Drew MagaryGenre: Science Fiction, Postmodern DystopiaReally funny, really dark, and full of a surprising amount of morality and humanity in a pre-apocalyptic world.
Imagine a near future where a cure for aging is discovered and-after much political and moral debate-made available to people worldwide. Immortality, however, comes with its own unique problems-including evil green people, government euthanasia programs, a disturbing new religious cult, and other horrors.
4. Horrorstor - Grady HendrixGenre: Comedy, HorrorHonestly this book is just balls to the wall fun. It’s a horror novel that’s laid out like the world’s most messed up IKEA catalog. Spooky at times, ridiculous and funny, at times moving, while also offering great social commentary on consumerism and the the current status of retail workers.
Something strange is happening at the Orsk furniture superstore in Cleveland, Ohio. Every morning, employees arrive to find broken Kjerring bookshelves, shattered Glans water goblets, and smashed Liripip wardrobes. Sales are down, security cameras reveal nothing, and store managers are panicking. To unravel the mystery, three employees volunteer to work a nine-hour dusk-till-dawn shift. In the dead of the night, they’ll patrol the empty showroom floor, investigate strange sights and sounds, and encounter horrors that defy the imagination.
5. Rant - Chuck PalahniukGenre: Science Fiction, Horror, SatireThis is a book I read several years ago and that I still think about from time to time. I haven’t had time to sit down and reread it, but parts of it still resonate with me today. This is a very peculiar story and it is told in a rather peculiar fashion (it is an oral history, and as such is told in a very conversational way by a number of different characters with a wide variety of thoughts and opinions on the titular Rant. It’s hard to properly describe this book, but let’s just say it’s been in my reread list for a while now.
Buster “Rant” Casey just may be the most efficient serial killer of our time. A high school rebel, Rant Casey escapes from his small town home for the big city where he becomes the leader of an urban demolition derby called Party Crashing. Rant Casey will die a spectacular highway death, after which his friends gather the testimony needed to build an oral history of his short, violent life.
6. John Dies at the End - David WongGenre: Comedy, Horror, Dark FantasyHoly god what do I even say about this book? It is just hilariously and marvelously insane. A perfect mix of cosmic fantasy, horror, comedy, and lunacy, and I loved every minute of reading it. I still have the rest of the series lined up to read, too!
The drug is called Soy Sauce and it gives users a window into another dimension. John and I never had the chance to say no. You still do. I’m sorry to have involved you in this, I really am. But as you read about these terrible events and the very dark epoch the world is about to enter as a result, it is crucial you keep one thing in mind: None of this was my fault.
7. Sphere - Michael CrichtonGenre: Science Fiction, Deep Sea HorrorThis is one I actually JUST finished, and I absolutely adored it. I had a couple small complaints about it, but overall, it was a wonderful read and very engrossing. Plus, I’m always a sucker for deep sea horror.
A group of American scientists are rushed to a huge vessel that has been discovered resting on the ocean floor in the middle of the South Pacific. What they find defies their imaginations and mocks their attempts at logical explanation. It is a spaceship of phenomenal dimensions, apparently, undamaged by its fall from the sky. And, most startling, it appears to be at least three hundred years old….
8. I, Lucifer - Glen DuncanGenre: Religious Fantasy, Occult FictionThis book is incredibly well researched, thought out, and characterized, as well as funny and extremely thought-provoking. I’d never expected to see a story that would give me a realistic and modern look into the Devil’s side of the story. I especially never expected to see a story that would make the Devil learn what it is to be human, either. All in all just an A+, fantastical read.
The Prince of Darkness has been given one last shot at redemption, provided he can live out a reasonably blameless life on earth. Highly sceptical, naturally, the Old Dealmaker negotiates a trial period - a summer holiday in a human body, with all the delights of the flesh. The body, however, turns out to be that of Declan Gunn, a depressed writer living in Clerkenwell, interrupted in his bath mid-suicide. Ever the opportunist, and with his main scheme bubbling in the background, Luce takes the chance to tap out a few thoughts - to straighten the biblical record, to celebrate his favourite achievements, to let us know just what it’s like being him. Neither living nor explaining turns out to be as easy as it looks. Beset by distractions, miscalculations and all the natural shocks that flesh is heir to, the Father of Lies slowly begins to learn what it’s like being us.
9. The Wasp Factory - Iain BanksGenre: Psychological HorrorLook, I want to say this right off the bat. This book is… not for everyone. Trust me when I say this is an extremely dark book with a lot of dark content. I would say that if you have any potential triggers, you may want to message me first and I will give you a better rundown of what all this book entails. This is a true piece of horror fiction. But it’s also incredible. I ate this book up in about two days and it is one of my favorite pieces of dark fiction to date. So yeah, chat with me if you have any concerns, but if you enjoy truly dark fiction, then this is up your alley.
Two years after I killed Blyth I murdered my young brother Paul, for quite different and more fundamental reasons than I’d disposed of Blyth, and then a year after that I did for my young cousin Esmerelda, more or less on a whim. That’s my score to date. Three. I haven’t killed anybody for years, and don’t intend to ever again. It was just a stage I was going through.
10. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams (the whole series, trust me)Genre: Comedy, Science Fiction, Cosmic FantasyJust trust me when I say this is a series that literally everyone should read at least once in their life. They are unflabbably hilarious in a way that only Douglas Adams could be, and they are just truly unique. This series is (rightfully) a classic and shouldn’t be missed.
Seconds before the Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy who, for the last fifteen years, has been posing as an out-of-work actor. Together this dynamic pair begin a journey through space aided by quotes from The Hitchhiker’s Guide (“A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have”).
11. World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War - Max Brooks Genre: Zombie horror, Faux HistoryI beg you - do not judge this book by the very terrible movie that was made about it. It is an entirely different animal than that mess of a movie, I promise. World War Z is a masterfully crafted book that details the zombie apocalypse in ways never before done in fiction. The Battle of Yonkers scenes and the testimony of Tomonaga Ijiro still stick in my head to this day. This book is a triumph of horror, ‘history’, and humanity, all balled into a distinctly unique experience.
The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched first-hand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of thirty million souls to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet. He recorded the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living, or at least the undead, hell of that dreadful time. World War Z is the result. Never before have we had access to a document that so powerfully conveys the depth of fear and horror, and also the ineradicable spirit of resistance, that gripped human society through the plague years.
12. The Raw Shark Texts - Steven HallGenre: Fantasy/Realism, Meta-fiction, MysteryThis is a tough one to put into words. I read this many years ago, and I remember it more as a series of emotional experiences rather than just as a singular plot. Which I think really speaks to its character as a book. This is a book that deals with dissociation, memory loss, our sense of self, how easily we can lose that sense, and our struggle to hold onto or to rediscover the world we know and the people we believe ourselves to be. This book is just… an experience, much like House of Leaves. It’s immersive, and at times quite unsettling.
Eric Sanderson wakes up in a house he doesn’t recognize, unable to remember anything of his life. All he has left are his diary entries recalling Clio, a perfect love who died under mysterious circumstances, and a house that may contain the secrets to Eric’s prior life. But there may be more to this story, or it may be a different story altogether. With the help of allies found on the fringes of society, Eric embarks on an edge-of-your-seat journey to uncover the truth about himself and to escape the predatory forces that threaten to consume him.
I think 12 should be good for now! I certainly have more though, if you want them!!
Bonus, Currently Reading: The Library at Mount Char - Scott HawkinsGenre: Contemporary Fantasy, Horror, Dark FantasyI don’t have a whole lot to say about this yet since I’m not very far into it, but so far it’s been extremely intriguing, and Hawkins’ writing is truly beautiful.
A missing God. A library with the secrets to the universe. A woman too busy to notice her heart slipping away. Carolyn’s not so different from the other people around her. She likes guacamole and cigarettes and steak. She knows how to use a phone. Clothes are a bit tricky, but everyone says nice things about her outfit with the Christmas sweater over the gold bicycle shorts. After all, she was a normal American herself once. That was a long time ago, of course. Before her parents died. Before she and the others were taken in by the man they called Father.
Bonus 2, Up Next to Read: Dark Matter: A Ghost Story - Michelle PaverGenre: Horror
January 1937. Clouds of war are gathering over a fogbound London. Twenty-eight year old Jack is poor, lonely, and desperate to change his life, so when he’s offered the chance to join an Arctic expedition, he jumps at it. Spirits are high as the ship leaves Norway: five men and eight huskies, crossing the Barents Sea by the light of the midnight sun. At last they reach the remote, uninhabited bay where they will camp for the next year, Gruhuken, but the Arctic summer is brief. As night returns to claim the land, Jack feels a creeping unease. One by one, his companions are forced to leave. He faces a stark choice: stay or go. Soon he will see the last of the sun, as the polar night engulfs the camp in months of darkness. Soon he will reach the point of no return–when the sea will freeze, making escape impossible. Gruhuken is not uninhabited. Jack is not alone. Something walks there in the dark…
(also if any of y’all have read these, i’d love to hear YOUR thoughts on them too)

Booklet about TD and Matthew’s performance
Full work (including pics) is here: http://tieba.baidu.com/p/3546440861?pn=2
Here’s AB and me’s major work:
老实说,直到第3集我才觉得进入到Rust的Locked Room(被锁住的房间)。而在我看了你的许多电影作品之后,再次重看真探,才发现你的表演是如此细腻和深沉。
To be honest, I can' t get close to 95Rust's locked room until episode three. And after I had seem a lot of films and rewatch TD, I found how your performance was incredibly delicate and innovative is.
But I'm obsessed with 12Rust the first second he showed up. "I loved your face of a young man less than the one you have now, devastated."
Every single tiny expression in your eyes, your body, your voice showed such unbelievable freedom and power. When I was first watching the first two episodes, I can't wait to see 12Rust show up and continue his monologue. Such a totally different voice from your own! And only such voice can command such lines, Which are Incredibly divine and extremely earthly, dreamlike but solid, like the sound of truth.
Your command of words is unfuckingbelievable. Your voice delivers intensive and delicate emotions that moves audience. The way you describe an event is so vivid, enable audience create a picture of the event without watching it. What a a great storyteller you are!You give words and sentences lives, andestablish a specific world of a man by means of voice.
In the draft script of the first episode (May Nic release the final version?) There are some flashback about Rust's family and his undercover life. I don't know why Nic and Cary decided to cut them all, maybe they want to focus on two spacetime.
It is right to delete all those flashback. Audience got enough information from your voice, eyes, body and face already. They can picture those events in their mind, and understand how the events influenced Rust by your solo. Your performance provided an even "realer" experience than showing the actual scenes. It would be a disgrace to let those flashback interrupt your enchanted performance.
Nic once said "If we’d had a lesser actor than Matthew playing Cohle, I would have had to rewrite the role.". He write even more and stranger lines for you instead, he really count on you, and you did not let him down.
For example, "And other times I thought I was seeing straight into the true heart of things." in the draft script becomes"most of the time I was convinced that I'd lost it. But there were other times,I thought I was mainlining the secret truth of the universe". The later one provides a sense of cosmic horror, a boarder worldview, and imply two of the themes of "TD": "illusion and reality" and "false illusion of subject-object ego”. It will be a ridiculous line when it come from a lesser actor's mouth, but omg you just delivered the line perfectly, made episode two"Seeing Thing" ended in a solemn atmosphere.
Before I saw the first two episodes in the draft script,I had already admired you greatly for 12Rust,but now,I can't help admiring you with all my heart.
But for your performance,I know 12Rust would have been anybody but not the one I love deeply.
From the original script,I can't find appreciable distinction between 12Rust and 95Rust.But on the screen, the manner and posture of 12Rust are totally changed,he alternates humor with severity, which is so charming and cool.
No wonder Nic was surprised for your emotional and physical changes, even he might not have had such a specific picture in his imagination.
According to the craft script, the detectives' first impression of 12Rust was aggressive, dangerous and lupine.
The script mentions that 12Rust became semi-relaxed with his beer until the episode two, which means he was tight before.
However, in your performance,he was unmistakably dangerous, but he was also very laid back all the time. It seems everything is under his control.
Maybe he is belligerent, but not hostile, not out of pressure. He was like playing cat and mouse with the detectives. He was quite cooperative, but kept look down to the detectives out of fearless and careless. (Or "pretended" to be careless)
It looks like he was not being interrogated, they were.
That's why Cary said he can't micromanage a performance like that, you have your own ways of locating your character, bringing yourselves into character and letting yourselves out of it. All of those interrogation scenes were on your shoulders—he just let the camera go.No doubt, your performance turns a obvious room into a stunning showcase.
I found Nic used"I believe", "I think" and "perhaps" sometimes when talk about Rust. In contrast, you always so certain you know Rust inside out. Creators may like to left something unknown about the character, leaves enough imagination room for himself and audience.
However, a performer must think more than the creator wrote to make the character real, clarify the vague image in the creator's mind:"He IS Rust!". And realise that there is no anyone else can play this part. I am sure you made Nic feel such a great happiness.
I'm really curious about when did you want to add "I consider myself a realist", If you have this idea before Nic finish the final episode, you are a genius for real.
I believe there are some conflict between you and Nic though. For example, in the draft script, 12Rust said "Three years of that and I couldn’t get the walls in my apartment to stop whispering. Or the carpet fibers to quit their high-pitched shrieking..." It was deleted, I'm wondering if it was because you thought Rust enjoy Crash's life even more? Or it was Nic decided to retool it for your voice? Rust indeed should show no weakness in front of the detectives. This line replaced by "And there is no fucking expiration date, baby", which showed a charming swagger.Yeah, there is no fucking expiration date for Crash, and there is no fucking expiration date for Rust's punishment on himself as well.12Rust choosed self-deriding over self-pity.
I'm glad that the flashbacks of Crash's life were deleted, it kept the history mysterious. Although Crash was the least favourite Rust's stage of mine, he still make my imagination run.
Your command of words is fascinating, but the blank-leaving in your performance are amazing as hell too. When 12Rust was talking about the death of his daughter, that silence, that blanked eyes and face showed the deepest sorrow. Your power of wordless is as powerful as your command of words.
I can do terrible thing to people with impunity",我想这就是12Rust轻蔑北岸的原因。
I love the scorn you showed when talking about "North Shore", there is no such an attitude in the draft script. Maybe it is Nic's intent, because there is one more related scene add: "I can do terrible thing to people with impunity" 95Rust said. Maybe that's why Rust contemned "North Shore", he did not regret that he had killed those outlaw, but a police officer run away from legal sanction is very irony to him.
Another possible conflict between you and Nic is: Did 12Rust want to kill himself ?
Nic said "Cohle makes clear to Marty that he wants to die and views this case as something he has to solve first." (at the end of episode seven?). Marty seems like he knew Rust wants to die, so he did not tell Rust he was cooperated with the detective? After Rust killed Errol and saved Marty, he pulled out the knife. It looks like he did want to kill himself, I mean, everybody knows such act will make you die faster!
However, In you 450-page graph-which we fans wanted badly-you wrote " ...He will not accept defeat. He's not going become a madman,he's not going to kill himself. He wrestles the devil every day, and he realizes that this may last a lot longer than he ever hoped for." It seems suicide is not as attractive as it was in 1995 to Rust. What's more, in the theory(Eternal return) he believes, if he kill himself, he will reborn into the same life, so he will be failed to tie off the circle of violence and degradation, and it is defeat.
I know "You own your man", the most confused plot made by Nic is let Rust left his case for eight years, he ran, he"averted his eyes". Is Nic just want to make Rust having decadent lifeand aged quickly? How did you understand this plot?
Having watch the interviews of you and Nic (Not all of them though), your Rust seems tougher than Nic's. You give Rust so much energy, and enormous vitality, a kind of sick, unhealthy, rusting vitality, but remarkably indomitable, like the raging fire from hell.
Such vitality makes Rust's "reborn" more convincing. What' the reason? Regret? Not accept defeat? Want to make sure the debt is paied? However, "in the last nanosecond", he can't "let go". His strong death wish beated by his stronger instinct of being alive. He left family and death, which he loves, but come back to human race and ife, which he hates.
Nic want to write a nihilist before TD, he enjoy article about nihilism, but he is not a nihilist, so did Rust. Nihilism is "true", but it is againest human's emotion. And Rust was born to be an emotionally intense man.
Rust's brain "knows" Nihilism is true. But his black and white sense of wrong and right, strict moral code, extreme sense of justice and guilt is inside his body, they are his nature, such nature againest the void and ruleless nihilism.Throughout his life, he always let his body, not brain, to make decisions and take actions. He is never a rational man.
Rust always take the side of justice, firmer than Marty did. Not by means of words or thoughts, but action. As Nic said, he is a true hero.
The contradiction of Rust's words and action embodied the themes of TD: "chaotic nihilism" and "binary opposition". To show such intensive opposition in one character, and make audience convinced that he is a real person, is really difficult. But you just marvelously made it.
I know you don't like adjectives, in fact I'm almost run out of them. No matter how much adjectives I used, they cannot describe how great your performance is. Let's put it this way, it is THE best performance I've ever seen, the second place may be one light-year away.
Aside from True Detective,I think "Dallas Buyers Club"&"Killer Joe"are your best performances.
They are two contradictory performances, but both of them maintained the highest quality.(playing Ron must be more difficult though)Your acting was very natural, despite the roles are very dramatic.
The performance in DBC intended to let audiences come into Ron's heart, share his will and woe.You showed Ron's emotions delicately and powerfully in every moments, Thus the audiences are totally understood and moved, their contempt to a "redneck" shaded into admiration.
But the acting in Killer Joe is completely different from DBC,as you said,Joe didn't need to get on well with anybody, actually, including the audiences.
His mission is frighten the audiences, keep them out of his door.
He must be unfathomable, cautious to express feelings, and even if he did,it's in an abnormal way.
The more unfathomable and unpredicable he is,the more terrified audience are.
I guess when an performer act such a role in such kind of movie, he may consider more about how to maximize his effect on audience than explore the character's heart. May be that's why you said Joe did not have repertoire? To keep mysterious and awesome seems more important than express emotions.
Aside from that classic cult scene, the chicken scene, there are two scenes I like in particular. First is, from Joe gently encourage Dottie come out the room, to order her to exchange clothes.......
OMG there are several minutes I truely believe he was a gentle man who seldom in love with anyone did in love with Dottie........
The contrast , the unpredictability you showed scared me out of my wits. Just a second before, he was so nice and sincere, and treated Dottie like she is the most valuable treasure he ever found, then he did the most terrible thing to her. Your shift from gentle to scary was incredibly natural.
Another scene is the dinner scene. It is obvious that you didn't play Joe as a flat freak, we can see Joe really yearn for family from this scene. He want to make it like a family dinner, but it was just an illusion build up by his orders. Of course they are not his family, he was like a child have no idea what a normal family look like, and force others to playing house with him.
Therefore, when Joe knew the woman he loves will give born to his real family, you think it will be a deliverance to Joe, so he looks ecstasy, but not scared, which suggested by the director.
By the way, I must thank Mr. Friedkin, you look gorgeous in "Killer Joe"........
Performance is everything in "Dallas Buyers Club", and your performance is heartbreaking, Ron is my favourite character in your films. Ron had hundreds of defects for sure, but I love strong man, and he is almost invincible.
He was so vulgar and noble at the same time. He was fighting for life with all his strength, illuminated the most primordial brilliance of humanity. I can't point out one best scene, it was so unforgettable from the beginning to the end, your eyes did a great job.
A coarse redneck was appeared vividly on screen when the first time Ron showed up. Such great performance followed by serial amazing scenes: confirmed he was HIV-positive in library, negotiate with the doctor, desperated in the car, bounced back in mexico and drive to Texas, pretended to be a priest, suffered in theairport toilet, do Rayon justice in the supermarket, gone mad in hospital after Rayon died, gone painfully clear-headed from give-up absent-minded in front of a prostitute, confessed with the doctor at the end......
Every scene is wonderful and real, the emotion of the character was bleeding. No wonder it was unbearable for Ron's family, even audience who know nothing about Ron would be deeply deeply touched.
Although I think "Killer Joe" and "DBC" are two contradictory performances, but you actually combine these two kinds of acting in TD, Rust was oppressing and expressing, unfathomable but emotional.
Just keep acting!
In terms of acting, you are my favourite actor. All your performance is so powerful and dynamic. You power of silence is getting greater and greater. I would love to see you act in every character.Just keep acting! Wish you and your family all the best!
P.S. Would love to see you play Matthew Scudder particularly. Or maybe play a dumb in a european historical movies?(lol) Seriouly, I do think you have a classical face to play such movies.

so ive been replaying night in the woods again after two/three years
and i have... a ton of thoughts, so this will have spoilers, but especially about the cult. all the spooky cosmic horror in the game, the dream sequences, the cult (obviously), the teens, the hole at the centre of everything, the forest god, even the janitor, i am near certain none of its real
my main reasoning is just how much more it fits the writing and themes and to think that all of it is just washed away with “its magic/god” kind of... detracts from a lot of aspects in the game. i know a lot of the fandom likes to think that mae has some kind of latent power and all the dreams are her astral projecting, but again that just removes so much depth from the character
maes been developed through the entire game to have had trouble with her mental health for a large chunk of her life and her stress dreams tie into that, but to say shes having the dreams because of the cult sort of rationalises all of her issues as being because of the cult
on the topic of the cult themselves it sort of just... proves them right. which sucks. literally everything about them being right sucks. the cult could be a result of people who were pushed over by the government and mining companies who dont care about them and all their misguided hatred turning on innocent people. the cult could literally be a metaphor of the government itself as a microcosm, sacrificing people that “no one will miss” to try and keep an economy running. or the cult could be right and its all up to a hole-ghost and all of that meaning is gone
and my favourite part has some meta story telling to it where actively trying to find the connection and reasoning is just... entirely misguided. why does the janitor show up at specific times? maybe no reason. the dream sequences have a bird, a gator, a bear, but why the squirrel? if the rest are about maes friends and other characters whats the squirrel? probably nothing, or at most its just because she sees squirrels a lot in the street. theyre just stress dreams
i love the idea that all of its made up and it only gets worse because mae tells no one about it. its taking the “unreliable narrator” to another level instead of just having the protagonist lie, mae doesnt know whats happening herself, and her perspective passes on to the player
maybe some of it is real but i dont like the idea that everything left up to a higher power that isnt human, when the story clearly sets out that the “higher power” is the people in charge. theres so much more i would love to get into but ive went on too long

Tag Games
I was tagged by @flinnybillymoonexplosion.  Thank you! and I'm patiently waiting for you to come back to tumblr ;)
Rules: complete the survey and say who tagged you in the beginning. when you’re finished, tag people to do this survey. have fun and enjoy!
1: Are you named after someone?  No.  My real name (misa yuhki is my internet name) consists of two kanjis and each means beauty and harmony.
2: When was the last time you cried?  Yesterday, when I was re-watching (for how many times??? I lost count) Person of Interest.
3: Do you like your handwriting?  Yeah. Though I wish my handwriting would be more beautiful but mine is OK, I think.
4: What is your favourite lunch meat?  Oh... I don't think of any.  I'm not a vegetarian but I'm sort of eating meat less and less in recent years.  But if I am to choose one it will be a hamburg steak.
5: Do you have kids?  No.  And I'm not a pet person.
6: If you were another person, would you be friends with you?  I think so.  But if this another person wants to hang out, call, and text with me everyday, you will be disappointed.
7: Do you use sarcasm?  Yes!  But people around me consider one who uses sarcasm not witty but mean and awful, so I try not to be sarcastic so that I wouldn't get into problems.
8: Do you still have your tonsils?  Yes.  I wonder who doesn't and for what reasons you get rid of it, to not get throat cold often, I suspect.
9: Would you bungee jump?  Right now in my room comfortable, warm and peaceful in front of my computer typing the answers for those questions, I will say yes!!  But I don't know how I will be when I'm right there to bungee jump ;p
10: What is your favourite kind of cereal?  I don't have any.  I don't eat cereal a lot.
11: Do you untie your shoes when you take them off?  Yes, but time to time I tie my shoes loosely so that I don't need to untie them.
12: Do you think you’re a strong person?  No. Especially physically I'm not strong.  My mentality used to be very very strong but past several years I'm indulging myself with easy-going.
13: What is your favourite ice cream?  Anything with dark chocolate.  Chocolate and cherry or any other berries would be perfect.
14: What is the first thing you notice about people?  I look to one's eyes and sort of assess whether this person is honest or not.
15: What is the least favourite physical thing you like about yourself?  My thighs; they are so big that people who don't know me usually assume that I'm an athlete, which I am definitely not.
16: What colour pants and shoes are you wearing now?  I found this question very interesting because it eliminates the possibility of one's wearing skirt!  Oh!  This question might be originally aimed to men or try to be gender neutral.  Anyways I'm in grey (with a hint of purple) pajamas sort of stuff and a pair of slippers.
17: What are you listening to right now?  Jamie Cullum's Out of This World
18: If you were a crayon, what color would you be?  I don't know...  I just don't want to be a crayon I think.  But if I need to turn into a color, it would be orange or gold.
19: Favourite smell?  I really love the smell of roses.
20: Who was the last person you spoke to on the phone?  My father about how to use USB.
21: Favorite sport to watch?  It used be baseball but now I don't have enough patience to watch any sport for those long hours...
22: Hair color?  Black
23: Eye color?  Black
24: Do you wear contacts?  No, my eyes are so screwed for contacts.  I wear glasses.
25: Favourite food to eat?  Noodles.  I love noodles.  With lots of veggies.
26: Scary movies or comedy?  If scary means horror, I prefer comedy, but if scary means suspenseful psycho drama, I will go for scary movies.
27: Last movie you watched?  That would be Constantine for treating myself on last new year's eve with tons of booze.
28: What color of shirt are you wearing?  Dark purple.
29: Summer or winter?  Summer, if I need to choose from these two, but autumn is my favorite.
30: Hugs or kisses?  I like giving hugs and kisses to those who I love.  But I'm in Japan where physical contacts are scarce in even between family members, so then I would go hugs.
31: What book are you currently reading?  Prince Lestat, The Goldfinch, and others.  I read several books at the same time.
32: Who do you miss right now?  I miss my grandma and my friend from high school who passed away four years ago from long term illness, her anniversary day is in the next week.
33: What is on your mouse pad?  No... because I stopped using any mouse pad after mouse didn't have that ball thing in it.
34: What is the last TV program you watched?  If it means that I watched any TV programs on TV, then nothing.  I don't watch TV programs on TV anymore but I watch those dramas that I love.
35: What is the best sound?  All of my favorite music and voices of my nephews and nieces.  And the waves of ocean, god I miss it so much.
36: Rolling stones or The Beatles?  The Beatles; they have this artistic-ness that developed their musicality into different stages.  Actually about Rolling Stones I have listened to only some pieces of them because their music isn't my thing.
37: What is the furthest you have ever travelled?  If it means "where" (sorry I'm not a native speaker so I may be misunderstanding this question), it would be Paris for only seven days trip, but if it means really "what", I would say some strange cosmic world while I was meditating.
38: Do you have a special talent?  Teaching; I can teach whatever I can do.  I've never had any training for teaching but it's very natural to me.
39: Where were you born?  Osaka, Japan.

My Reinterpretation of Cardinal de Richelieu (1642) by Philippe de Champaigne as a deep one vampire god
Cardinal de Richelieu (1642) by Philippe de Champaigne
Introduction
So, astute readers (do I even have any readers in these early days?) may recall my post some days ago about the validity of painting over public domain images (specifically classical art) in order to do something new, as part of a larger discussion on the validity of collage art, found art, matte paintings, etc.
Naturally, works of this nature are strongest when they act as a commentary on the original work; a lot of erasure literature and poetry creates satirical commentaries on the work in which they transforming.
A good friend of mine told me that this form of art is “Artist Reinterpretation”, and true enough, google yields a not inconsiderable amount of artists who have done similar things, albeit they don’t usually go the horror route.
I was a tremendous fan of H.P. Lovecraft and of cosmic horror in general, so this series of projects (I already have another one done) was cosmic horror themed. Your favourite classical works of art transformed into unknowable horrors.

Cardinal de Richelieu (1642) by Philippe de Champaigne
My Reinterpretation of Cardinal de Richelieu (1642) by Philippe de Champaigne as a deep one vampire god
Rationale: His eminence, Cardinal Richelieu (“The Red Eminence”) was a figure of significant bloodshed with his participation in the European Wars of Religion (the 17th century); where he notably came down on the Protestant side of the war, to curb the power of the Spanish Habsburgs. In all fairness however, the Cardinal was a product of his time, and I actually admired him as a Statesman—however with a monicker like “The Red Eminence”, and due to his noble bearing, sheer charisma, and political acumen; one cannot help but imagine in this Prince of the Church a supernatural creature, like Count Dracula. This reinterpretation was about revealing a supernatural version of the Cardinal, as a supernatural being.

Fandom 5k Letter
Dear Writer,
To begin with, thank you for writing for me! I really appreciate the time and effort, especially for this exchange, and I want to emphasise that I’m going to love whatever you come up with, so write what you want to write and don’t stress about it. All I ever really want from exchanges is more fic about my favourite characters so I’m very easy to please. The genre tags I’ve picked are probably bordering on the excessive but that’s just me liking a lot of different things. As always, prompts are just there if you need a little inspiration, if you already have your own idea then go for it. My previous letters can be found here; I’ve recycled a lot of old prompts in this letter but you’re welcome to draw on any I haven’t as well.
Likes – AU settings (modern, steampunk, sci-fi etc, go wild!), canon divergence AUs, grey morality, gothic vibes, fantasy elements (creepy fairies, enchantments etc), character studies, backstory, banter, road trips, found family, femslash, ladies working together, ladies kicking ass (literally or figuratively)
Dislikes – torture, depictions of rape/dubcon/sexual assault (implied/discussed is fine), pregnancy, homophobia
Ghostbusters
Erin/Holtzmann, Abby & Erin & Holtzmann & Patty
This movie was such an unexpected delight and I just want more of these ladies, kicking spectral ass and being friends and not giving a damn about what anyone else thinks of them. I loved the light tone of the movie but I also love creepy ghost stories so feel free to take these prompts in any direction.
-what’s one of their most memorable busts? Are there any particularly scary or irritating ghosts? Do they ever go beyond New York? Perhaps to investigate a ghost town, or abandoned buildings in the middle of nowhere…
-how does their ghost research progress after the events of the movie? Any big scientific breakthroughs? Do they find out more about the world through the portal? Any big mishaps that lead to more ghosts rather than less? I wouldn’t be surprised if Holtz’s unstable equipment malfunctioned somehow
-the team hanging out in their downtime (movie nights, celebrating each other’s birthdays, Patty taking them to interesting historical sites around the city…)
-there are a lot of genre AUs I’d love to see for this fandom but the first ones that spring to mind are Victorian gothic (ghost hunting would fit so perfectly) and cosmic horror (what creatures live on the other side of the portal?)
All of those could have an Erin/Holtz bent but for some more specifically shippy prompts:
-everyday moments between the two of them, slowly getting closer the longer they work together - cleaning off slime after a tough bust, late nights at the lab, long uneventful stakeouts of ghosts that may or may not be there
-established relationship moments - lazy mornings, date nights (bound to be some odd ones with Holtzmann around), culinary adventures, trips away together
-I’m dying for a San Junipero au of these two, if you’ve seen it (if you haven’t, it’s a standalone piece and a really lovely story - Black Mirror season 3, episode 4)
HTGAWM
Annalise/Bonnie
I’m not caught up on the second half of season 3 but I will be soon, though tbh I’m here for character dynamics - there are so many freaking plot twists I’ve forgotten much of what happened earlier in the show anyway. What I love about this pairing is how complicated and co-dependent it is; their personal relationship and working relationship bleed into one another, it’s messy as hell and it’s never not going to be like that.
In the meantime, shameless copying and pasting of prompts from the last exchange I did, with a few new ideas:
- they finally kissed and then the freaking house burned down, so maybe a quiet moment between those things happening when Annalise is wide awake and sober (seriously that whole situation was so ficcy, with Bonnie taking care of her – might as well mine it to its full potential)
- I like how effective a team they are as lawyers and the contrast with their complex messy personal relationship, so like, maybe casefic with a side of dysfunction
- backstory! all the backstory! good moments, bad moments, just anything exploring how their relationship came to be as it is
-assuming Bonnie gets Annalise out of jail, how does their relationship change going forward?
-in terms of genre shift, I would love a political au - Annalise runs for office, or maybe she’s a career politician, with Bonnie as her right-hand woman (of course), and they take a similar approach as they do to law - occasional good intentions, regularly dirty methods, a string of bodies in their wake
Rogue One
Jyn/Leia, Jyn & Leia
All I want from Star Wars is a proper relationship between two women and it has yet to materialise. So give me Jyn and Leia as friends, girlfriends, reluctant allies, whatever, as long as they’re interacting. They’re from very different backgrounds - polished princess and petty criminal - but they’ve both been trained for rebellion from a young age, and if they met around the time of A New Hope, they’d both be grappling with loss; there’s a lot of potential to mine.
-they’re sent on a mission together at some point during the war - how well do they function as a team? Who’s in charge? How does the other deal with that?
-Jyn surviving Scarif and standing beside Leia when the Death Star gets destroyed - what does it mean for each of them? What would Jyn’s involvement in the rebellion be like going forward?
-building on that, what would Jyn do if she were still alive during the Force Awakens? Would Leia turn to an old friend/old flame for support after losing Han?
-college au, where they’re both involved in student activism but have very different methods of getting shit done (Leia working from within the institution, getting elected to various student offices and delivering impassioned speeches at committee meetings, while Jyn goes for more subversive tactics)
Wolf 359
Lovelace, Minkowski, Lovelace/Minkowski, Eiffel & Minkowski
My new favourite thing! I started listening about a month ago and was immediately hooked. I love the show’s effortless switching between humour and much darker material, the insular character dynamics set against the big empty galaxy, and the bleak underlying scenario of being stuck on a spaceship that’s falling apart while nobody on Earth really seems to care.
I requested my favourite characters and combinations of characters but I like Hera and Hilbert too and most of the prompts could apply to the Hephaestus crew as a whole, so if you want to take more of a group approach that’s totally cool. What I’m really interested in is how the characters function and develop meaningful relationships under the circumstances.
(I’m less a fan of the SI-5 team; the angle I’m interested in there is the disruption they present for the original crew , so if you want to include them in that capacity, go ahead. Also, feel free to ignore the whole Lovelace = alien thing cos that’s mostly what I’ve been doing.)
Prompts!
-if the crew do make it back to Earth, what then? Do they stay in touch or drift apart? Is it difficult to re-adjust to ‘normal’ life? Or for a lighter approach, the crew indulging in all the things they’ve missed most about Earth
-wacky space shenanigans! The first time Minkowski brought out the jetpack and Eiffel got excited, an experiment of Hilbert’s going wrong and everyone helping with damage control, ways Eiffel has attempted to alleviate his boredom...
-exploring pre-canon - the characters’ first weeks of life in space and how it was the same/different from what they thought it would be, moments where characters realised their first impressions of each other weren’t quite accurate, etc
The X-Files
-what I’m really after here is casefic, weird happenings with a side of Mulder & Scully banter. One of my favourite things about the show is how many genres it managed to incorporate so effortlessly, sci-fi/horror/thriller etc, and I love the monster of the week episodes that their own distinctive feel - the claustrophobia of Ice or the melancholy of the Field Where I Died. Some of my favourite X-Files tropes are small creepy towns, isolated mountain forests and strange lights in the sky, if that helps :)
-I’m not a huge fan of the revival - I think it was a missed opportunity, because it was a) a mess and b) didn’t really use aspects of the 2010s that make the show still relevant today - government spying, distrust of authority, etc. So a modern au done right would be really nice.
-the show’s pretty noir-ish already but I would love a full-blown noir au, Scully as the straight-laced detective who gets reluctantly entangled in her partner’s wild goose chase
-or complete opposite direction, take out the aliens and have Mulder & Scully as office co-workers
