Leadership, to me
Today was a hard day, in a string of hard days. The current continuing resolution debated in Congress will strip all Community Project Fund requests, including one that was proposed by a team that I lead and eventually accepted and included in the appropriations package. The funding would have supported the establishment of a post-wildfire materials testing facility at our university to assist homeowners, insurance agents, and public officials to deem what is toxic or safe, and in between fire lulls, would explore safe building practices in the West. My goal is to have it free of use post-wildfires to combat the fraudsters and those that take advantage of suffering (is remains intentional, when one door closes as it were...). Just sits heavy when $1.2 million vanishes. The news broke about 9.30 AM local time here, when I was prepping lectures for the next few weeks. Just felt mostly hollow, sent a few emails to my government liason, the team, and some of the Unviersity leadership to explore next steps and alternative avenues. Scrambling internally, making budgets and student experiences work out.
Later in the afternoon, my laboratory was having a board game night. Focus on them, on their joy, on their curiousity, on their youth. I wonder now, how many times has a professor sat across from me, internally calculating, screaming, raging, but relieved by the promise of the next generation. And the simple goofiness of games. My students are the best thing that I could have ever invested in. Truly, I am lucky every single day. I also used to avoid saying "my" in reference to students, but recently realized I now say it much more. My team.
I realized on my drive home, I am living up to the leader I want to be - communicating "I've got this", and stopping the unnecessary slings and arrows. Additionally, highways give me new lanes of thought to explore, and allows me to revist old routes. I remembered, being choked out for weeks when the mountains were on fire. A year later, I saw my community drifting as smoke in the air hundreds of miles away as I crossed the Nebraska border. Those days were hard too, and those days mattered. The board games matter. The next generation matters. You matter. Although it is hard now, we and I will figure this out. Because I will always work against everything going up in smoke and ashes.
Onwards.

Here’s the thing about WatcherTV,
Let’s talk about what’s being offered —
Let’s talk the financial —
Let’s talk the unanswered —
Let’s talk the solution —
Cumulatively since they began — trailers included — Watcher has 377 videos available for view. Netflix has 17,000 titles. Episodes, movies, and most recently games. If the minimum price of Netflix at $6.99/month provides that, how can one justify $6/month for WatcherTV? 2.2% of Netflix’s size is what Watcher is offering — all of which are currently free on YouTube.
The closer similarity, of course, would not be Netflix but Dropout. The prices of their subscriptions are equivalent, but again, what isn’t, is the amount of content. There is already a significant backlog of videos that can be consumed for new subscribers AND three different shows which post weekly. Had the company come forward with a backlog of new media at the ready to be watched, people would have been far more receptive to this proposal.
I understand that, as a creative, you have certain aspirations for making the best version of your idea. You want what you put out in the world to be as close to the image in your head as possible. Sometimes there are constraints due to time, due to money, due to manpower — so on and so forth. I recognize that. I, myself, have worked professionally, academically, and privately in film/media production. I Understand.
What I do not understand is the decision to ostracize a larger portion of your audience. Not everyone can afford a new streaming service — especially one that offers such little in return for the cost. But beyond the American-centric perspective of it. This platform isolates the majority of foreign fans, especially those who are subject to exchange rates. What I have seen some refer to as “the price of a single coffee,” for others is a week’s worth of food.
This community was beautiful and passionate and diverse as a result of its ability to be easily and freely consumed. That will be lost without change.
Furthermore, we see issue derived from the lack of transparency as to what is being offered. We are being promised “bigger and better,” new things, and the return of collapsed things. However, there is a significant lack of clarity and it is felt. Beyond Travel Season and its upcoming May time release, there is no clarity as to what (beyond the old content) people are getting. Yes, there is the vague promise of future seasons of the fan favorites, but there is no clear time as to when. If people subscribe now, how long will they be waiting for content that isn’t already free?
How can this be fixed? Frankly, good fucking question. Perusing through the comments, it’s pretty clear that a majority of fans feel blindsided and lied to. Watcher has consistently denounced capitalism and condemned corporate greed, and to what extent this behavior falls into it definitely raises some questions. I think it is worth acknowledging, they are a company that has grown to put out content. That means they are responsible for 27 (I believe) paychecks, beyond their own. But that is not the only explanation for why they’re doing this. Or their most prominent one — I’ve already acknowledged their bigger and better mindset, but their other reasoning was that they are at the mercy of advertisements. And that this will stop those.
Well, what if it didn’t? The most obvious compromise, in my mind, would be something like Peacock’s cheapest streaming option of roughly $1/month which includes ads to make up the subscription cost disparity from their ad free option. That is far more manageable for most, even with exchange rates, than $6. It would still be a luxury beyond free, but most people would be able to justify a 1 USD splurge especially while waiting for content backlogs to actually come out.
I don’t hate the Watcher company after this, but I am frustrated and disappointed by their announcement. I am sure it was not done without thought, but it does not feel like it given what they have to actually show for this decision. I have been a consumer of their content for 10yrs, and it is what helps me during troubling times — Just as Shane acknowledged caring about. I would hate to lose the connection to this wonderful community because of a narrow minded perspective on the future. I urge @wearewatcher to consider this moving forward.

On July 6th the Scottish author Kenneth Grahame died.
Remembered for his children’s classic, The Wind in the Willows, Grahame was born in Edinburgh, on March 8th 1859. He had three siblings: Helen, Willie, and Roland. After the family moved from their Castle Street home to Inverary,, where his father was appointed Sherriff substitute, his mother Bessie contracted scarlet fever and died soon after. he took to drink and soon proved inadequate to raise his growing children.
His father fought to overcome his drinking problem and regain custody of his children. After he had a significant relapse, however, the children returned to their grandmother’s care in Oxford, while their father moved to France. The Grahame children were not in contact with their father after that time.
These years left a positive impact on young Kenneth--the stately country home and its gardens and orchards proved to be fertile ground for his young mind. They attended church in nearby Cranbourne where Kenneth's favourite uncle, David Ingles, acted as curate. Kenneth tended to be shy and he had a great imagination and love of nature. Boating on the nearby River Thames and jaunts in the surrounding fields and woods became some of his favourite past times and proved to be excellent fodder for his future creativity as a writer.
Excelling in both academic and sports pursuits like Rugby whilst attending St. Edward's School in Oxford (from 1868 to 1875), Grahame did not continue on with his dream of a university education due to the financial constraints of his Uncle John Grahame, who had been supporting him. In 1879 Grahame obtained a position with the Bank of England in London on Threadneedle Street as a clerk. He found the routine dull and boring and so, from his rooms on Bloomsbury Street, turned his pen to fiction and non-, submitting articles and stories to such publications as St. Edward's Chronicle, the National Observer [previously The Scots Observer], St. James Gazette and The Yellow Book. His first published story was titled By A Northern Furrow in 1888 and his most famous short story is, probably The Reluctant Dragon.
Grahame's works were printed in collections titled Pagan Papers (essays, 1893), his stories of orphaned children in The Golden Age and it's sequel Dream Days To critical acclaim. There is a ten-year gap between Dream Days and the publication of Grahame's triumph, The Wind in the Willows.
During that decade, Grahame became a father. The wayward, headstrong nature he saw in his little son Alastair he transformed into the swaggering Mr. Toad, one of its four principal characters. The character in the book known as Ratty was inspired by his good friend, and writer, Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch. Grahame mentions this in a signed copy he gave to Quiller-Couch's daughter, Foy Felicia.
Despite its success, he never attempted a sequel. The book is still widely enjoyed by adults and children. It has given rise to many film and television adaptations, while Toad remains one of the most celebrated and beloved characters in children's literature. In 1929, A. A. Milne wrote the play Toad of Toad Hall, which is based on part of The Wind in the Willows, which won the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award in 1958. In the 1990s, William Horwood produced a series of sequels.
Grahame died in Pangbourne, Berkshire, in 1932. He is buried in Holywell Cemetery, Oxford. Grahame's cousin Anthony Hope, also a successful author, wrote him an epitaph: "To the beautiful memory of Kenneth Grahame, husband of Elspeth and father of Alastair, who passed the river on the 6th of July, 1932, leaving childhood and literature through him the more blest for all time."
He was buried side by side with his son in the same grave.
The blue plaque and house in the pics are his birthplace at Castle Street Edinburgh.

jj i dont know what to ask you i feel like i already know too much about you because of confessions….
do you have opinions on modern music??
I'm sorry you were weirded out by the Confessions. Admittedly, I wrote them more for myself than for the public… And I like your username, visibly inspired by a little philosophical tale I actually enjoyed reading 👀
Thank you for this very interesting question! I already thought about this subject and to be honest, I am glad to have this debate because I find myself quite divided.
On the one hand, the positive points:
Modern music seems to have definitively freed itself from the strict constraints of academic regulations which, back in my days, considerably limited creative freedom and opportunities. These days, the advent of globalisation has made it possible for musical styles that were once traditionally confined to one region, one ethnic group or one country to be discovered on other continents, giving rise to contacts, sharing and mutations that have made music universal, in constant change and richer than ever.
I've noticed that there are still debates over what ‘real music’ should or shouldn't be, but they don't go as far as provoking censorship and bans, which is a wonderful improvement - at least in the Western world. I won't criticise the use of computer music either, because it allows people who never had the opportunity to learn how to play an instrument to create music regardless (although a keen ear will hear the difference).
Also, as you must know (I assume it because you seem pretty educated about my era), opera has a very special place in my heart and it's pretty close to what you call ‘musicals’. Human beings will always be telling stories through music, isn't it a lovely and hopeful prospect? Even this formidable technical feat called ‘cinema’, wasn't it born with mute actors whose emotions were conveyed only by expressive faces enhanced by music?
On the other hand, the negative points:
There is however an unpleasant feeling that I can't shake off and which tells me that today's artists don't always make music for reasons that I can support and approve of. It's obviously not the case for everyone, but there are a certain number of people who consider music as just another business to make money. These people aren't looking for the beauty of creation, the poetry and pain of putting your heart and guts into a heart-rending score or a soul-stirring song. They create music the way one would create tin cans: at high speed, on a loop, without actually trying to tell a story, without managing to move the audience. But music is an art. If you try to turn it into a commercial product, it becomes distorted and loses its original function, and then nothing makes any sense.
Regarding the mixing of music genres I mentioned earlier, I also think it's a shame that the lower classes don't manage to take up the forms of music more associated to the well-off classes, when the opposite is systematically happening. A simple example: Opera has unfortunately retained its image of an art reserved for a certain caste. On the other hand, music such as blues and rap has become the preserve of billionaires whose popular appearance is merely a disguise.
I am sorry, it was a bit longer than expected ! This is what happens when I talk about things I'm passionate about.

RAPS + CRAFTS #23: Sunmundi
1. Introduce yourself. Past projects? Current projects?
Peace. I’m Sunmundi. I started rapping a few years ago. Last year I released my debut album, Midnight Oil, produced by Āthmaan, through Damn That Noise, and my second album, Lived and Born, produced by klwn cat, just came out. I’m currently working on a project with my man Sasco for '25.
2. Where do you write? Do you have a routine time you write? Do you discipline yourself, or just let the words come when they will? Do you typically write on a daily basis?
I try to write every day. But I go through long bouts of writer’s block, in which case I have to force myself to take a step back and wait till I get inspired again. And I pretty much only write raps while driving. For the past few years I’ve had a really long commute to work, so I end up just listening to beats and jotting down lines in my car. Pretty fucking dangerous, but it is what it is.
3. What’s your medium—pen and paper, laptop, on your phone? Or do you compose a verse in your head and keep it there until it’s time to record?
I just use my phone.
4. Do you write in bars, or is it more disorganized than that?
Initially I tend to just focus on writing down as many thoughts and lines as possible when listening to a beat, then eventually separate them into stanzas where it feels right. I don’t count bars or anything—when a verse feels done, it’s done.
5. How long into writing a verse or a song do you know it’s not working out the way you had in mind? Do you trash the material forever, or do you keep the discarded material to be reworked later?
When I feel like I’m forcing lines, I stop writing. But once I have a set of good/memorable lines and can figure out how I’m gonna rhyme, I know pretty immediately after that I’ll finish the song. I used to try and repurpose all my leftover lines, and a lot of them do end up in songs, but lately I’ve been finding that shit turns out better when I write the whole thing to a beat from scratch.
6. Have you engaged with any other type of writing, whether presently or in the past? Fiction? Poetry? Playwriting? If so, how has that mode influenced your songwriting?
When I was studying English in college, I enjoyed academic writing, so I got used to a certain command of language. I presented one of my papers at a literary conference (the paper was about Griselda and Machiavellian ethics, so I read Benny and Westside Gunn lyrics to a room full of academics and peers, which was funny). But I was never very interested in any creative writing before rap. I feel like my voice/songwriting comes down to my musical influences more than anything.
7. How much editing do you do after initially writing a verse/song? Do you labor over verses, working on them over a long period of time, or do you start and finish a piece in a quick burst?
I definitely labor over verses. I might take anywhere from a week to a month to get a verse done. I try to edit as I go, working line by line, but on the whole, I’m spending most of my time editing after I have a foundation set. I used to take way longer to write a single verse/song, but I’m learning that sometimes quick flashes of writing can yield good shit.
8. Do you write to a beat, or do you adjust and tweak lyrics to fit a beat?
I usually let the beat dictate the direction of a verse. I’ll occasionally write down lines that pop up in my head and put them in a song later on, but generally, I write to beats.
9. What dictates the direction of your lyrics? Are you led by an idea or topic you have in mind beforehand? Is it stream-of-consciousness? Is what you come up with determined by the constraint of the rhymes?
It depends. When I was releasing one-off songs before Midnight Oil, they were mostly inspired by the beats producers would send me. Now my albums are becoming gradually more conceptual, so I generally have a pool of ideas to pull from in order to write a song. I don’t really make songs “about” specific things though—not that I have anything against that, but I like trying to capture moods and atmospheres in more general ways. That’s just more satisfying to me. And I won’t say rhymes are an afterthought, because I spend so much time thinking about them, but I think the content of what I’m writing is moreso at the forefront of my mind. And I believe there’s always some element of stream-of-consciousness going on as well.
10. Do you like to experiment with different forms and rhyme schemes, or do you keep your bars free and flexible?
I feel like I’m still trying to solidify what makes my shit work, so I don’t experiment too much with form. Occasionally I like to try and keep one rhyme scheme for a whole song/verse, but otherwise I’m sticking to the basics and going where each line takes me.
11. What’s a verse you’re particularly proud of, one where you met the vision for what you desire to do with your lyrics?
The verse on “Harbingers” off Lived and Born. It’s the last song on the album, but it feels like it’s opening a door for the listener as I’m closing one for myself—“It’s goodbye for now, hello forever.” Also the whole verse feels like a major catharsis, which is becoming a habit of my outros.
12. Can you pick a favorite bar of yours and describe the genesis of it?
I don’t think I can pick a favorite, but one couplet I love is, “From now until my voice drown, I vow to hold it down / Say Holden, don’t you wait around, say, Scout, take me out.” I just dig the wordplay on the first line, and the second line references Holden Caulfield from Catcher in the Rye and Scout from To Kill a Mockingbird, two books my dad and I share a love for. I feel like by contextualizing myself with those two characters, both of whom are kids, I’m crediting my dad for teaching me to appreciate reading while also reflecting on my own nostalgia. So it feels like a nice shoutout to him.
13. Do you feel strongly one way or another about punch-ins? Will you whittle a bar down in order to account for breath control, or are you comfortable punching-in so you don’t have to sacrifice any words?
I try not to punch in. I think I’ve only done it on two or three songs before. It’s common for me to write myself into a hole, where I don’t have the breath control to rap what I wrote, but I think I’m getting better at knowing my limits and writing around that by condensing lines. Plus the challenge of writing more concisely makes you a better writer, in my opinion.
14. What non-hiphop material do you turn to for inspiration? What non-music has influenced your work recently?
I’m not as big a reader as I used to be, but when I get writer’s block, which is common, I try to get back into it. Some writers who have inspired me are James Baldwin, Dostoyevsky, David Foster Wallace. But I dig movies too. I find David Lynch, Bong Joon-ho, and Robert Eggers to be inspirational. And lately I’ve been trying to give my albums more of a thesis of some kind, so I’m trying to do more reading and studying topics to put into the music. For the project I’m working on right now I’m thinking about media overconsumption, the perils of technology and its impact on communication, etc.
15. Writers are often saddled with self-doubt. Do you struggle to like your own shit, or does it all sound dope to you?
I’m full of self-doubt as an artist, but I think that mindset leads me to only release music I can be content with. I listen to my stuff pretty frequently before releasing it, then when it’s out, I tend to move on to the next project. I feel like I need to live with the music before I can really claim it as my own and be proud of it, you know?
16. Who’s a rapper you listen to with such a distinguishable style that you need to resist the urge to imitate them?
Definitely woods. Obviously his style can’t be copied (he takes care of his words—Munchausen by proxy), but when Aethiopes dropped, I had to stop listening to it after a few weeks because I didn’t wanna start biting. His tone, humor, and flow are infectious. I’ll put Starker in that category too—I think he has one of the best flows I’ve ever heard.
17. Do you have an agenda as an artist? Are there overarching concerns you want to communicate to the listener?
I don’t have an agenda that extends to the listener. I try not to be didactic, or preachy, or purport to know more than anyone else. My writing is mostly very internal, personal, emotional. It’s common for me to speak in the second person in rhymes, but that’s just a device I use to tell or ask myself something. I’m my own target audience. That being said, I do feel like I tend to write from a very zoomed out perspective, and if that happens to be relatable or evocative to a listener, that’s tight.
RAPS + CRAFTS is a series of questions posed to rappers about their craft and process. It is designed to give respect and credit to their engagement with the art of songwriting. The format is inspired, in part, by Rob McLennan’s 12 or 20 interview series.

Hellooo, hope you have a good day🫶🏻
I was wondering if you knew when you’re going to update bloodstained rubies (the yan chrollo story)Or if you have maybe discontinued it or something lmao
I really love the story and I hope you continue writing it 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻
Hello lovely, I hope you’re doing okay! I’m so happy you like the story, it means the world!
I’m not sure when Bloodstained Rubies will be updated, not because I don’t have anything planned/written for how the story continues but because I have kind of had some delays in being able to finish the next chapter and be okay with how the story would continue. I’ve been very busy with university lately, and I have also taken a “break” from writing as often because I want to get better at it, so I’ve been reading up more creative writing books and delving deeper into storytelling. So yeah, Bloodstained Rubies will be updated, but first I want to give it the thought it deserves! You know, writing without constraints is fun but the longer I write the more I want to write something that is more meaningful, more “well-crafted”.
So yeah, that’s the explanation 😅 You could blame the inconsistency and delay on a mixture of my ADHD, life and academic pursuits getting in the way and the fact that I’ve been trying to get better at storytelling lately

#7 – 'Wordsworth's Ridge (For Fran Fike)' (A Sun Came, 1998)

Two things:
William Wordsworth (1770-1850) was an English poet known for his massive influence on the Romantic aesthetic in literature. Arguably the defining poet of his time, he acted as Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom between 1843-1850. His magnum opus The Prelude serves as the basis of the lyrics in ‘Wordsworth’s Ridge’.
Francis Fike (1933-2022) was professor emeritus of English at Hope College, retiring in 1998 (the year Sufjan recorded most of A Sun Came.) He was Sufjan’s English professor for much of his time at Hope.
The tenderness to write a song in dedication of another. To create beauty in their name. To decide that they are worth everything. In this song, Sufjan does it twice.
Before his ideas became earth-shatteringly huge in scope, Sufjan kept a very academic, studied approach to songwriting. One of the quirks of his early work is how incredibly conceptual it was. He has talked in interviews about how he would pick a topic area – grotesque ones seemingly his preference, like stalkers and serial killers – and proceed to write (and discard) a full album about it; it was a knowingly arbitrary constraint that forced him to be improbably creative. This was how the Sufjan of A Sun Came turned into the Sufjan of Illinois: trial, error, trial, error, trial, error. He worked his songwriting like a bodybuilder would work a muscle. The 10,000 hours is not a myth.
I bring this up because I like to think that ‘Wordsworth’s Ridge (for Fran Fike)’ was one such challenge song. I like to think that Sufjan had such admiration for his mentor, such deep appreciation for the way he guided Sufjan towards a richer understanding of art, that Sufjan thought to repay him in song – one of his favourite poems put to beautiful, rich, layered folk music. A sign that Sufjan understood his teachings and turned them into an eternal document of appreciation. And I like to think that Professor Fike rather enjoyed it. There is no evidence for any of this, but the thought is really quite charming, and reflects well on Sufjan – the impact of a good teacher is so incredibly understated in a world of ‘tortured genius’ narratives. Stand up and thank her, indeed.
Lyrically, this is a song that more or less speaks for itself. ‘Wordsworth’s Ridge’ is a retelling of a section of The Prelude in which the poet steals a boat and rows down a river, intimidated by the awesome crags and cliffs surrounding him, totally subsumed in nature. The poem is more or less accurately translated to lyrical form; there is paraphrasing here, extension there, but the effect is largely kept the same. To perform a more granular reading of the lyrics would be to just outright analyse The Prelude, and I will refrain from doing so here – you can find commentaries online that do it more cogently, intelligently and accurately than I would. It is worth reading, though. The Prelude is an absolute cornerstone of Romantic thought, with some of the most awe-inspiring poetic accounts of nature that you will ever encounter. I can see why Sufjan, a man preoccupied with the existential implications of theism, would so enjoy a passage about the speaker subsuming himself in a force greater than he. It’s the natural world quaembodied spirit, mountains as Nephilim.
What is more interesting is discussing how the musical character of ‘Wordsworth’s Ridge’ reflects the textual character of its lyrics. In a way subtly different to most Sufjan songs, ‘Wordsworth’s Ridge’ feels filmic, or at least narrative, in character – it has introduction, turning point, action, climax, denouement. Whereas A Sun Came’s more folk-leaning songs generally tend towards sparseness, this song is heavily orchestrated; A Sun Came so often revels in chance, but every moment here feels calculated. It is somewhat surprising that this song isn’t more well-regarded by the fan community – on account of its sheer ambition, at the very least – though I suppose it’s possible that most feel as I do about it (high in concept, low in melodic and harmonic brilliance.)
Consider it that way, then – consider ‘Wordsworth’s Ridge’ as the narrative that it is. It starts in the stillest of summer nights. Not a breeze, not a voice, not a cloud in sight; nothing, except the low buzz of cicadas and the slight chill of an mid-August evening. The acoustic guitar figure is not quite tense, but it is certainly anticipatory. Something is soon to happen – no justification but instinct. Banjo enters, then an earthy flute line, and a cool wind begins to pick up. The leaves that cover the ground, long-dead, rustle and crunch to the tune of sleigh bells. Piano, clarinets, bass. The wind surges through the trees with ever-growing intensity, and suddenly the whole forest seems to be alight with motion. But this does not last. A new flute line carries across the land – the beckoning of some spirit, form unknown – and the wind stops. The narrator has found his way through. A boat appears.
A new progression. Sufjan sings with a mid-range delicacy and a use of melisma that anticipates his later work. It is a plaintive, peaceful melody. The narrator spirits away with the boat and rows delicately across the lake, oars piercing its unbroken surface and sending little eddies and currents far afield. He is not dominating this place; he is helpless to it. It consumes him. Soon the accompaniment is a feather bed of guitar lines. The cliffs appear to him as wardens of the land. As he passes through, they watch him. Protective, is all. The narrator is disturbing their perfect stasis. But they do not threaten, and as he passes through, past the cliffs, past the oaks and conifers, past the reeds, past the cherry blossoms shedding their coat, they swallow him, and allow him to find himself amidst them. Takes me...

E8 and the Quest for Unity: Garrett Lisi's Impact on Theoretical Physics
The E8 Lie group is one of the largest and most intricate mathematical structures known, consisting of 248 dimensions. Garrett Lisi's theory proposes that this structure can encapsulate all known particles and forces, including gravity, within a single framework. By attempting to integrate the Standard Model of particle physics with Einstein's theory of general relativity, Lisi seeks to address one of the most profound challenges in modern physics: the unification of quantum mechanics and gravity.
Lisi's work emerged during a period when string theory was the dominant paradigm for unification. However, string theory faced criticism for its lack of empirical evidence and testable predictions. In contrast, Lisi's approach offers a fresh perspective by employing the E8 Lie group, which has been largely unexplored in this context. This aligns with historical instances where independent researchers have introduced groundbreaking ideas that disrupt mainstream scientific thought. Lisi's independence from traditional academic institutions has been crucial to his innovative approach. By working outside conventional structures, he has been able to pursue creative ideas without the constraints often associated with academia. This mirrors historical figures in science who have made significant contributions through independent inquiry.
Despite its innovative nature, Lisi's theory has faced substantial criticism for being incomplete and lacking empirical validation. Critics argue that it does not make testable predictions necessary for scientific acceptance. However, this skepticism is part of a broader historical pattern where novel theories initially encounter resistance but eventually contribute to scientific discourse by prompting further investigation. Lisi's work has sparked discussions about alternative approaches to unifying physics, highlighting the importance of diverse perspectives in advancing theoretical understanding. While his theory remains speculative, it underscores the potential for independent research to inspire new directions in scientific exploration.

Mathematics as the Language of Nature: The Legacy of Leibniz and Noether
The intricate dance between mathematics and the natural world has long been a source of fascination and discovery, a relationship eloquently captured by the works of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and Emmy Noether. Their contributions laid the groundwork for understanding how mathematical structures can describe the fundamental forces of nature. This legacy finds a contemporary expression in the exploration of E8 theory, a complex mathematical framework that aspires to unify all known forces.

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, a 17th-century polymath, envisioned mathematics as a universal language capable of revealing the rational order of the universe. His development of calculus provided a powerful tool for modeling dynamic systems, reflecting his belief in an interconnected cosmos governed by mathematical principles. Leibniz's philosophy emphasized pre-established harmony, suggesting that mathematics could uncover the underlying symmetries of nature.

Emmy Noether, renowned for her profound contributions to theoretical physics, introduced a pivotal theorem linking symmetries and conservation laws. Her work established that every continuous symmetry corresponds to a conserved quantity—such as energy or momentum—providing a systematic method for deriving these laws from physical systems. Noether's insights underscored the role of symmetry as a fundamental organizing principle in physics.
The E8 structure, discovered in the late 19th century, is one of the most complex symmetrical forms known, with 248 dimensions representing mathematical degrees of freedom. It has captured the imagination of physicists seeking a "theory of everything" that unifies all fundamental forces. Garrett Lisi's proposal to use E8 as a framework for such unification reflects ongoing efforts to apply sophisticated mathematical structures to solve deep physical questions.
Despite its allure, E8 theory faces significant challenges. Critics like Skip Garibaldi have highlighted flaws in Lisi's approach, arguing that it fails to accommodate all known particles and forces within its framework. Nevertheless, the pursuit of E8 theory exemplifies the enduring quest for unity in physics—a quest rooted in the mathematical elegance championed by both Leibniz and Noether.
Remarkably, signatures of E8 symmetry have been observed in laboratory experiments involving exotic crystals. These findings demonstrate how complex mathematical symmetries can manifest in physical systems, offering tantalizing glimpses into the potential real-world applications of abstract mathematical concepts.
The legacy of Leibniz and Noether continues to resonate in contemporary explorations of E8 theory. Their vision of mathematics as a language capable of describing nature's deepest secrets inspires ongoing efforts to unify fundamental forces through elegant mathematical structures. While challenges remain, the pursuit reflects an enduring belief in the power of mathematics to illuminate the mysteries of the universe—a belief that continues to drive scientific inquiry today.

10 ways to Survive School Stress with a Strong Support System

Between heavy workloads, packed schedules, peer pressure, and big expectations, being a student can feel extremely stressful. In fact, over half of students report feeling stressed by school on a daily basis, according to the American Psychological Association. Dealing with constant school stress alone takes a major toll on mental health and wellbeing. But surrounding yourself with a strong support system makes all the difference in effectively coping. Read on for research-backed ways that friends, mentors, counselors, family, and other supports can help you stay balanced and thrive during stressful academic times.
Why Social Support Helps Ease School Stress

Humans are wired to connect. But the pressures and competitiveness of academic culture can breed disconnection and isolation. Maintaining social bonds counters the negative effects of stress in key ways: Talking through worries relieves bottled up emotions. Listening to different perspectives provides clarity. Feeling cared about fulfills the need for belonging. Being vulnerable builds intimacy which combats loneliness. Offering support yourself also boosts your own resilience. In essence, sharing the load with people who “get it” makes tough times far more manageable.
Build Your Web of Support

Surround yourself with a diverse support network by proactively cultivating connections: 1. Lean on Existing Friends Make time for trusted friends, even if only virtually or via text. Choose friends who uplift you and offer empathy without judgment. 2. Bond with Peers Who Share Your Struggles Find study buddies or join school clubs to connect over common interests. Sharing stress can help you feel less alone. 3. Confide in Understanding Parents Let parents know when you’re overwhelmed and need extra support. If parent relationships are strained, lean more on other trusted adults. 4. Seek a Mentor at School Teachers, coaches, counselors, nurses, and club leaders can be mentors. Their guidance helps you navigate school pressures. 5. Talk to Counselors Freely School counselors are trained to help you manage stress confidentially. Be open about any difficulties so they can connect you with resources. 6. Bond with Pets Caring for and snuggling pets reduces cortisol levels and provides comfort. If you can’t have a pet, spend time with friends’ pets. 7. Spend Time with Siblings Siblings share and understand your family dynamics. laughing together eases tension. 8. Make Time for Hobbies Creative outlets like art, music, and writing allow you to express yourself. Passions provide balance to academics.
Nurture Your Support Circles

Once you’ve built your support network, be proactive in cultivating those support relationships: Check in regularly, not just when you’re stressed. Listen with empathy when friends open up to you. Express appreciation for people’s support. Thank them. Honor friends’ time constraints too. Find mutual support. Offer support yourself by sending encouraging texts, funny memes, care packages, etc. If conflicts arise, communicate openly and make amends. Set boundaries around toxic relationships that drain you. Treasure the people who accept and care for the real you.
When to Seek More Social Support
Notice if your support system feels lacking. Are you mainly isolating and internalizing stress? Experiencing real social connection deficiency hampers wellbeing and coping. Consider seeking counseling or joining school groups if you have: No friends to turn to about worries Conflicted family relationships Lost motivation to see friends Difficulty opening up about problems Thoughts of self-harm or that others are better off without you You don’t have to navigate the pressures of school alone. Support is out there if you open up.
Sample Stress Management Conversation Starters
Speaking up to access social support starts with expressing vulnerability in safe relationships. Here are some conversation starters: “I’ve been feeling really overwhelmed with school and need to vent for a minute. Can we talk?” “I haven’t felt like myself lately with all this test anxiety. Have you felt that way before?” “Can I get your advice on how you managed your workload last semester?” “Would you have any time in the next few days to meet up? I could really use a friend right now.” “I’m feeling sad about falling behind in math class. Could I get a study buddy for the next exam?” Voicing your needs and asking directly for support opens pathways to feel understood and regain balance amidst school stressors.
Conclusion
School stress often incites feelings of isolation and being the only one struggling to cope. But sharing your experiences and getting support from people who “get it” transforms challenges into growth opportunities. Invest time proactively fostering relationships that allow you to feel heard and let difficult emotions out. Bond over common ground, offer empathy, give and receive care. With a web of support buoying you during inevitable school stressors, the pressures become far easier to rise above.

Choosing the Right Legal Advisors: 5 Things to Consider

Finding the ideal legal counsel can feel overwhelming, especially when major decisions—or your company’s future—hang in the balance. The right advisor becomes a trusted partner who helps you navigate regulations, minimize risk, and seize new opportunities. Below are five essential factors to guide your search and ensure you secure counsel that fits your unique needs.
1–3. Expertise, Relevant Experience, and Professional Reputation
1. Match their expertise to your needs Law is vast, and no single professional can master every niche. Start by pinpointing the exact area of law that concerns you—corporate structuring, employment, real estate, intellectual property, or dispute resolution. Then look for advisors who specialize in that field. Review their academic background, certifications, and years of practice to ensure they have deep, specific knowledge.
2. Examine their track record Past outcomes often hint at future performance. Request anonymized case studies or example transactions that mirror your situation. Pay attention to how complex those matters were and how efficiently they were resolved. A proven record demonstrates not just skill but also reliability under pressure.
3. Gauge their standing in the legal community Professional reputation is more than word of mouth; it is built on ethical practice, peer respect, and client satisfaction. Check whether prospective advisors speak at industry seminars, publish thought leadership, or serve on professional committees. These activities indicate they are trusted voices in their domain—and likely stay current on changing regulations.
You’ll find many seasoned Legal Advisors in Dubai who meet high standards of knowledge, integrity, and client care, so weigh credentials carefully to narrow your short list.
4–5. Communication Style and Transparent Fee Structure
4. Assess communication compatibility A great legal advisor explains complex matters in language you understand and responds promptly when new questions arise. Schedule an initial consultation and note how well they listen and how clearly they answer. Consider cultural fit as well—do they respect your decision-making style and business objectives? Good chemistry fosters trust, making it easier to share sensitive information and tackle urgent issues together.
5. Clarify fees and billing methods Transparency around costs prevents surprises later. Ask whether they bill hourly, use flat fees, or offer retainers for ongoing work. Understand what is included—research, filing fees, third‑party services—and how frequently you will receive statements. If your project has budget constraints, discuss them upfront; reputable advisors will suggest creative ways to manage costs without compromising quality.
Final Thoughts
Selecting counsel is an investment in security and growth. By focusing on specialized expertise, proven experience, professional reputation, clear communication, and transparent pricing, you lay the groundwork for a successful partnership. Take time to interview multiple candidates, request references, and trust your intuition. The right legal advisor will not only safeguard your interests today but also empower you to make confident, forward‑looking decisions tomorrow.
