#student housing
Text
Newfoundland and Labrador's post-secondary institutions have teamed up with an organization that can find housing for students, while helping to curb loneliness of seniors with room to spare.  SpacesShared, an online platform that helps pair seniors with empty rooms in their homes with students, has recently been launched in Newfoundland and Labrador. CEO Rylan Kinnon says the app uses an algorithm to match compatible students with older hosts interested in home sharing. "These are longer-term living relationships. We verify the host identity and their address. We verify the student's identity and that they are in fact enrolled at a post secondary institution," he said.  "Once they've actually connected through the platform, we support them. We check in with them a week after the student moves in and every month and if we identify any issues through that survey, we follow up with a phone call."

yesterday, i found out that the administration of the student dormitory is relocating me and my roommates to other rooms in order to give our apartment to some boys. i've been living here for three years, so this news hit me very hard. i tried to solve the problem, but now it's clear that nothing can be changed.
i went out for a walk in the forest to calm down. an hour later, i returned home and discovered that my neighbor, a very quiet and sweet girl, was covering the entire room with twilight posters using super glue to greet the boys who will be moving in.
i can't stop laughing hysterically. is it petty? oh yes. does she regret anything? nope.

Time Management for Students: A Key to Success
Tumblr media
Time management is a crucial skill that every student should master. It plays a vital role in achieving academic success, reducing stress, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. In this article, we’ll explore the importance of time management for students and provide practical tips on how to effectively manage your time to make the most of your academic journey.
Understanding the Importance of Time Management for Students
Time is a finite resource, and it’s easy to let it slip through your fingers if you’re not careful. For students, time management is essential for several reasons:
Academic Success: Effective time management allows students to prioritize their studies and complete assignments on time. This leads to better grades and a deeper understanding of the subject matter.
Reducing Stress: Poor time management often results in procrastination and last-minute cramming, which can lead to high levels of stress. On the other hand, good time management reduces the pressure and anxiety associated with deadlines.
Balancing Multiple Responsibilities: Many students juggle academics, part-time jobs, extracurricular activities, and personal commitments. Proper time management helps in balancing these responsibilities without feeling overwhelmed.
Setting and Achieving Goals: Time management is the key to setting realistic goals and working toward them methodically. It ensures that you make steady progress towards your objectives.
Practical Tips for Effective Time Management
Now that we understand the importance of time management, let’s explore some practical tips to help students manage their time effectively:
Create a Schedule: Start by creating a weekly or monthly schedule that outlines your classes, study hours, and other commitments. Use digital tools or traditional planners to organize your time.
Set Clear Goals: Define your academic and personal goals. Knowing what you want to achieve will help you prioritize tasks and allocate time accordingly.
Prioritize Tasks: Not all tasks are of equal importance. Prioritize your assignments, projects, and activities based on their deadlines and importance. Focus on high-priority tasks first.
Break Down Large Tasks: If you have a big project or assignment, break it down into smaller, manageable tasks. This makes it less overwhelming and allows you to make steady progress.
Avoid Procrastination: Procrastination is the enemy of effective time management. Combat it by setting specific time slots for studying and sticking to them. Eliminate distractions during these periods.
Use Time Blocks: Consider using the Pomodoro Technique, which involves working in focused 25-minute intervals followed by a 5-minute break. This method can enhance productivity and prevent burnout.
Learn to Say No: While it’s essential to be involved in extracurricular activities and social events, don’t overcommit. Politely decline invitations or requests that could interfere with your academic responsibilities.
Seek Help When Needed: If you’re struggling with a particular subject or task, don’t hesitate to ask for help from teachers, tutors, or classmates. Getting assistance can save you time in the long run.
Review and Reflect: Regularly review your schedule and evaluate your time management techniques. Make adjustments as needed to optimize your efficiency.
Take Care of Yourself: Adequate sleep, a balanced diet, and regular exercise are vital for maintaining energy and focus. Don’t sacrifice your well-being for the sake of productivity.
Use Technology Wisely: Utilize time management apps and tools to help you stay organized. There are many apps available that can assist in creating schedules, setting reminders, and tracking progress.
Stay Flexible: While a structured schedule is essential, it’s also crucial to remain flexible. Unexpected events can occur, so be prepared to adapt your plans when necessary.
Effective time management is a skill that can significantly impact a student’s academic and personal life. It’s a tool that empowers you to make the most of your time, achieve your goals, and reduce stress. By creating a schedule, setting clear goals, and implementing practical time management techniques, you can unlock your full potential as a student.
Remember that time management is a skill that improves with practice. Start implementing these strategies today, and over time, you’ll become a more efficient and successful student, better equipped to handle the demands of academic life.

https://www.herzogdemeuron.com/projects/064-antipodes-i-student-housing-universite-de-bourgogne/
This basic unit has a very broad open corridor with the dwellings attached to one side, their dimensions ranging from 18 square metres for individual apartments to 99 square metres for the collective housing model which is shared by 6 students.

The three metre wide gallery forms a relational and meeting space that improves and extends the scant student habitat in the form of a semi-covered terrace.
the wooden panels which separate the apartments from the corridor add a feeling of furniture to the space, turning the area into a sort of living room, a domestic focal point.

Here's a thing about housing crisis':
I recently watched some youtuber move to Lisbon from the UK just for the heck of it. For the adventure, for craving something different to the environment they lived in at their hometown. And it. pissed. me. off. so much. I'm usually not much of a hater. This youtuber is someone who i usually have a lot fo respect for. I was dumbstruck. But mostly at my own anger.
They said they took a remote job and would spend a couple months there. One of the things that made them doubt their decision is that Lisbon is currently in a housing crisis but they ultimately decided that they still wanted to go through with it.
That is just something I don't get.
I'm living through a housing crisis in my country. My elderly neighbour waited 8 years for an apartment she could afford through a government assisted program. I had to have about 2,5 years of waiting time before I could find affordable student housing. Though it is true that there is less space in those programs than there is on the total market these programs are still linked to the market. Finally being these student houses I meet a lot of people who are older students, would actually really like to move somewhere where they don't share a tiny kitchen with 9 others, but are unable to do so since rent is too high in other places. Therefore many places that should have opened up stay closed for years. And the waiting time for affordable housing gets longer and longer.
I'm tethered to this place. I study here, I work here, my (extended) family is here, all the people I love are here. I have a fully actualized life here. I don't want to be forced to leave. But I need housing. And I need to not live with my parents anymore.
I get that to a certain extent that is a choice. It is my choice to move out. But for fucks sake. My younger brother failed out of uni because the very demanding degree required about 3 hours of extra study after being in classes for 7 hours a day. Although he really tried, he just couldn't find the time having to take public transport for 4,5 hours everyday. I sub rented at a couple different places throughout the last year and only then I could fully comprehend how not being able to live here impacted my social life. That is after covid already hit me quite hard. After being isolated for quite some time I'm only now relearning that I'm actually a really social person. That it is something I'm good at. Living in student housing was so important for me in that regard. That's not even speaking about how important it was for me to move out of a house with parents who border on being QAnon believers.
Watching that youtuber talk about moving somewhere with a housing crisis while having no real connection with the place other than just curiosity just made me mad. Go be curious some place else. Please keep on being curious but not at expense of the people who need that place to live. There are many beautiful places which have the capacity to welcome people. But please, please, don't go to some place for yourself when it's at the expense of locals.

Things Biden and the Democrats did, this week.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau put forward a new regulation to limit bank overdraft fees. The CFPB pointed out that the average overdraft fee is $35 even though majority of overdrafts are under $26 and paid back with-in 3 days. The new regulation will push overdraft fees down to as little as $3 and not more than $14, saving the American public collectively 3.5 billion dollars a year.
The Environmental Protection Agency put forward a regulation to fine oil and gas companies for emitting methane. Methane is the second most abundant greenhouse gas, after CO2 and is responsible for 30% of the rise of global temperatures. This represents the first time the federal government has taxed a greenhouse gas. The EPA believes this rule will help reduce methane emissions by 80%
The Energy Department has awarded $104 million in grants to support clean energy projects at federal buildings, including solar panels at the Pentagon. The federal government is the biggest consumer of energy in the nation. The project is part Biden's goal of reducing the federal government's greenhouse gas emissions by 65% by 2030. The Energy Department estimates it'll save taxpayers $29 million in the first year alone and will have the same impact on emissions as taking over 23,000 gas powered cars off the road.
The Education Department has cancelled 5 billion more dollars of student loan debt. This will effect 74,000 more borrowers, this brings the total number of people who've had their student loan debt forgiven under Biden through different programs to 3.7 Million
U.S. Agency for International Development has launched a program to combat lead exposure in developing countries like South Africa and India. Lead kills 1.6 million people every year, more than malaria and AIDS put together.
Congressional Democrats have reached a deal with their Republican counter parts to revive the expanded the Child Tax Credit. The bill will benefit 16 million children in its first year and is expected to lift 400,000 children out of poverty in its first year. The proposed deal also has a housing provision that could see 200,000 new affordable rental units

could possibly be moving into a victorian mansion with some friends and the rent is cheap when shared, but the landlord seems very very sketchy. we have a backup house but the idea of living in such a big elaborate place is beguiling. however, the sensible part of me says don't do it- it feels like something's being hidden from us. thoughts? any advice would be appreciated. it's also on a busy road and on a hill and one of my friends has a joint issue which means they can't handle inclines well, especially such a steep one like the hill the house is on.
