KATHARINA HENOT - COLOGNE, GERMANY (1570-1627) Katharina was known as the first female postmaster in Germany. She was also accused of being a witch. Historical records have documented close to 25,000 women who received a death sentence for allegedly practicing witchcraft. Katharina however, was said to be accused not due to her magical abilities, but rather for political disputes. Her accusers however, claim that she and her brother were responsible for bring death and disease to a covenant. She was tortured and beaten, regardless of her efforts to clear her name, she was ultimately suspiciously found guilty during a trial and burned at the stake. What’s more interesting is that her case was reopened in 2012 including others who were accused and murdered.
