I think the whole “wait, there’s more Knives Outs coming?” Is an issue of probably rather young people who straight up aren’t familiar with any mystery franchises that originated before 2015 (other than maybe Sherlock or Castle). They’re not familiar with Jessica Fletcher, or Shawn Spencer, or Adrian Monk. They know Lieutenant Columbo only as an internet meme. They might even be a little too young for House.

What they are probably actually familiar with are the two companies that were still engaging with the detective genre before Knives Out came out: Netflix and Hallmark.

And the amount of mystery franchises they built fanbases for and then abandoned is… staggering. They were burned by Moffat. They got into a cozy mystery (that came on before they had to leave for school) that was cancelled after a cliffhanger (I think this happened to me once; it’s not new). Maybe they heard about the Monk ending (brutal, but doesn’t register on the genre meter anymore) and chickened out of watching.

The ones that were finished were so plot and lore heavy, they had no room for filler.

I genuinely do not blame kids for not understanding a genre they were never taught how to engage with after constantly being lied to by corporations about basically everything.

Their only frame of reference for a forever show or franchise is either stuff like Marvel (and to a lesser extent, DC) and they kept rebooting and retconning everything (I am so serious) as soon as it was getting good. Or, in the crime genre, NCIS and CSI. Maybe Castle, if they’re a little older (and that has… quite the reputation amongst fans [It jumped the shark nearly as hard as Sherlock]). Like, their perspective of detective shows is very likely the original content mills, shelved projects, and abandoned plot lines. It’s what they grew up with.

The question is not “why don’t they understand long-running franchises?” The question is “how will they react when they stop being disappointed?” Because I have a feeling they’ll have some trouble adjusting. But I’m looking forward to the growth!

Fanfic: has Gavin get injured and then Nines forces him to take time off to recover.

Me: Maybe now they can finally spend some time bonding and building their relationship/friendship. I would love to see some fun social interactions between the two while Nines helps Gavin recover from his injury.

Author: I'm skipping the recovery time. People wouldn't want to watch Gavin and Nines do things like watch cat memes, and it wouldn't advance the plot forward.

Me: You don't know me at all, do you?

These fanfics are stories that have a central focus on the relationship between two characters. I honestly couldn't care less about the Red Ice investigation, weird ideas around deviancy or other boring plot lines. Maybe it's just me, but I don't read Detroit: Become Human fanfiction for the complicated police investigation stories; I read them to see fun and interesting character interactions. If I wanted to see fictional police investigations in great detail, I'd read a crime thriller novel or watch a police procedural show like CSI or Law and Order SVU.

Recovery arcs are perfect opportunities for characters to bond. Why would you waste that by skipping it? The social interactions between Gavin and Nines are the highlights of these stories (and the entire purpose for me to read them in the first place).

I don't really understand the memes about the Law and Order SVU intro, I've not seen any episodes before today and this isn't really an enjoyable show I'd make memes about like binge watching it for fun. Yet it's got 25 seasons and it's obviously popular. It's riveting sure, like CSI or any other crime drama but I don't know.

fundamentally i think the underlying thesis of csi ny is grief. 

on the surface the csi franchise is a who dunnit with a crime of the week style with a few multi-episode arcs sprinkled throughout csi ny was far more character driven than the others were

(again, i only really watched s1 and 2 of miami and very quickly horatio devolved from a character to a meme for me)

csi ny went hard on character right from the gate whereas the original csi was far more inconsistent with character the first few seasons because it’s main drive through season 1 and a lot of 2 was the science over character. i’d say it wasn’t until they really earnestly started delving into grissom that the show began to pivot into developing the characters more deeply. 

(i’d even go as far as to say the grissom years had an overreaching theme of gil grissom the scientist versus gil grissom the human but this isn’t about vegas)

(does any one else remember when catherine was originally from bozeman, montana and raised on a ranch? they would reuse that for lindsay monroe later on which i find hilarious.)

but csi ny opens immediately on mac taylor in a church looking like he’s holding back tears and clearly contemplative. blink later reveals to us that his wife claire died on 9/11 and he’s very much still grieving for her as he talks to the victim about her (the beach ball speech fucks me up every time) and the episode ends with him going to ground zero.

mac’s grief for claire was always it’s strongest thread that this show had. when one gets to indelible in season 8 it’s very natural and utterly heartbreaking to finally see claire and how mac was with her. 

but the other characters also have huge plot lines that revolve around grief and their response to it. lindsay with the deaths of her friends as a teenager, danny when ruben sandoval dies, flack with the loss of jessica. adam and the complicated relationship he has with his father. but there’s different kinds of grief explored too as with stella. a lot of stella’s grief and pain she feels at having to kill frankie in self-defense and how he damaged her sense of safety and she also experiences a lot of grief around identity which plays out in season 5.

yes, it’s a show about murder but underneath that it explored multiple facets of grief.

Hm. I’m kind of a giant nerd for happy endings. Angstiest would probably be Thistle and Weeds, a Rickyl fic.

Not usually. My crossovers tend to be within the same ‘verse. I wrote one where Kirk and Spock from TOS met Kirk and Spock from AOS and several fics where Clementine from TWD Video Games meets Rick, Daryl ... and especially Carl. :D

OMG, I was a NY addict. It's so nice to revisit my old fandom!

OTP(s): Flack/Angell was my main one. I had issues with Danny/Lindsay when I was still watching the first few seasons, but when I went back to the show in the last season it seemed like they were doing pretty well together. And I was a huge Mac/Stella and Hawkes/Stella shipper. Also, Flack/Maka and Danny/Maka, even though Det. Maka wasn't on much.

BROTP(s): Flack & Danny.

NOTP(s): I don't think I had any. I was such a huge multishipper when it came to this show.

What are you glad NEVER happened in canon? I am really glad Zao and Maka weren't on enough to get fucked over the way Marty and Jess did, when it comes to recurring characters.

What do you WISH happened in canon - a) realistically & b) anything’s possible? a) They'd have told us what happened to Danny's brother after the beatdown he got when he tried to clear Danny's name. b) They hadn't killed Angell.

Supporting character you wish you’d seen more of: Zao, Maka, Marty, Angell...they had such great recurring characters in the early seasons. Aiden, too, since she was booted and then murdered after the first season.

Character you wish you’d seen less of: None that I can think of, so far.

Best dressed: Stella for the women, Flack for the men (minus his chronically bad ties)

Do you read fanfiction for it?  Got a favorite to rec? Not really? It's a pretty dead fandom and most of the stuff I loved when it was active is gone. I'm one of the few authors still transferring stuff to AO3 for that fandom.

What bad take/opinion/trope gets under your skin? I don't think I have one, other than the way they handled the aftermath of Jess's death was really fucking stupid.

What actor best embodies their character? Gary Sinise. He is basically Mac Taylor, as far as I can tell.

Who would you recast? No one. The cast was amazing.

Biggest surprise: The shit they pulled on Marty. It came out of nowhere and was just...WTF-inducing.

Which company in the show would you like to work for? The NYPD crime labs.

Would you want to actually live in this universe? Maybe? It seems a lot like regular New York, with just a teeny bit more weird murders.
