what's ur favorite chicken breed and what's ur favorite chicken that you own
oh my god, i'm so sorry, you activated my trap card <- really autistic about chickens
OKAY. so my favorite breed is probably salmon faverolles but there's breeds like brahmas or wyandottes or hedemoras (!!!!) that i haven't owned yet that i'm just absolutely obsessed with and want to own at some point. also croad langshans.
but yeah, i'd say salmon faverolles are my favorite breed in general. i want to breed them so badly when i move from the city. it's actually my most important personal goal.
as for who is my favorite chicken i own. well. i don't like to play favorites but. you see.

Barnevelders are domestic chickens that originated in the Netherlands. They were created by cross-breeding local Dutch chickens with birds imported from Asia. These birds may have come from the Brahma, Cochin, or Croad Langshan breeds. https://backyardchickennews.com/is-the-barnevelder-a-breed-of-chicken/?feed_id=469&_unique_id=6394ce9cb4de5

My son is large
Tumblr media
He is very large
Tumblr media
Extremely large
(note: I do not breed for extreme size in any of my fowl as I don't find it healthy, Poseidon is from my first time hatching Langshans! He's a throw-back to his grandfather and great grandfather, both massive but very sound birds I got to meet at a show.)

What's the difference between Australia's Langshan and other countries? Sorry if it's a stupid question
Not a stupid question at all! Quite a good one actually.
The Australian Langshan and Croad Langshan (just called Langshan in America) are actually two different breeds! Since the Australian Langshan hasn’t really been exported out of the country (as far as I’m aware) it’s not very well known outside of Australia.
The history of these birds is pretty murky, but I believe in 1905 two Langshan breeds were imported from China into Australia. The Croad Langshan and the Wakfer Chinese Langshan. Croad Langshans are big stocky birds! They look really regal and imposing. Massive tails which are carried as high as their heads! Here’s a photo of one
Tumblr media
In comparison, the Chinese Langshan was a bit smaller framed and carried their tails much lower. I’m sorry for the bad photo quality but google images doesn’t yield results for the Chinese Langshans, and I’ll explain why in a minute, so these photos are actually my Mum and Grandfather’s birds! They bred them around 30-40 years ago. Admittedly these boys should have been holding their tails higher but what can you do.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, why doesn’t google yield results for them? The Chinese Langshan was renamed to the Australian Langshan. I’m not sure when this occurred or why, but unless you ask someone who’s in their 60′s or later, they don’t even remember the Chinese Langshan being a thing. Here’s a photo of the Australian Langshan
Tumblr media
As you can see the Australian Langshan and Chinese Langshan are... almost identical. My Mum and Grandfather scoff whenever this renaming is brought up since the birds are... yeah exactly the same :/
Answering your actual question though, the only difference between the Croad and Australian Langshans is their size and tail carriage. They have the same sweet and docile temperament, same colour varieties, and roughly the same standards of perfection (excluding the tail). The only other differences I can think of is that Croad Langshans are a rare breed and are healthy egg layers, whereas the Aussie is common and some (emphasis on some) bloodlines have way too much Australorp crossed into them and lay an unhealthy amount of eggs. I currently have three healthy Langshans who only lay around 3-4 eggs a week, and then I have Kath.... who lays 7 eggs a week :(
Both Croad and Australian Langshan are wonderful breeds, with the Aussies being my all time favourite breed.
Thanks for the ask Anon.

My favorite chicken fic, for my favorite person!
10 RMB Lucky Chickens by @zenthisoror
I owe Raitelzen a huge debt, as she was the one who got me into The Untamed (my beloved) and is just, in general, a massive sweetheart who I am very proud to call a friend. This book was my loving way of saying thank you to her for being so great. It also turned out to be one of my favorite books I’ve ever made!
Zen told me that themes for this book included: Motorcycles, astronauts, chlamydia, e-coli, silenced guns, and two specific breeds of chicken (croad langshan and silkie bantam).
I painted the two breeds of chicken on the front cover, which was one heck of a lot of fun. If you want to know how I incorporated the rest of the themes, more info is under the cut.
I did my best to deliver with the following:
Tumblr media
Which ended up on the chapter pages:
Tumblr media
I also used a chicken on the title page
Tumblr media
And incorporated some of the fantastic art that has been done for this story into the book:
Tumblr media
I used the same foil pen that I mention in this post to apply lettering to the spine.
Tumblr media
All in all, very pleased with how this turned out! Love to have a project that is very heavy on the visuals, and will take any oppourtunity to do some painting.
And now, some chicken close-ups for good luck:

CHIKKINS!
In case anyone is interested (but mostly because I just like to talk about chickens and no one can stop me) here’s a list of all the breeds I would like to one day have:
Black copper Marans (yes chocolate eggs plz) Orpingtons (they’re so FLUFFY) Araucana and/or Ameraucana (I’m a slut for coloured eggs ok) Cream Legbars (I love their feathers, also more coloured eggs) Welsumer (SPECKLES) Barnevelder (such a beautiful looking chicken, black laced are my faves) Isbar (green eggs! are you seeing the pattern yet?) Croad Langshan (pink eggs! also they’re gorgeous and apparently super sweet) Olive and/or Easter eggers (I just love coloured eggs, rainbow eggs for me) Bielefelder (so pretty) Groninger meeuw (local breed and pretty rare, but I think they’re beautiful)
Still contemplating:  Wyandottes (I mean just look at them) Sussex (especially love the speckled sussex) Vorwerk and/or Lakenvelder (another rare local breed that I think deserves some more love) Orloff (I just love the speckled feathers) Faverolles (SO FLUFFY) Swedish flower ( I guess I also have a thing for speckled birds)
So...yeah.......help

What breed/s of chickens are the friendliest towards humans? I was thinking of getting a wyandotte or barnevelder since their feathers are so pretty and seem not to have many common health conditions. My friend has a partridge wyandotte, a barnevelder and a buff sussex and even though they've all been handled by her since they were chicks, the wyandotte is quite skittish while the barnevelder just puts up with people and the buff sussex will actively seek out cuddles...
That’s a tricky question because you always get individuals within breeds who are cuddlier than others, and some who just don’t like them.
I’ve only had 3 Wyandottes, but in my experience they don’t tend to like cuddles. Some of my Pop’s Sussex are very cuddly, but sadly Sussex tend to have a lot of reproductive issues since they’re heavy layers, even with heritage/show lines. I don’t have any experience with Barnevelders I’m sorry; reading up on them I think their friendliness would be similar to a Wyandottes, happy to follow you around but prefers hands off.
The breed I cannot recommended enough is the Langshan. I very rarely get birds who aren’t cuddly, even adult birds I buy quickly come to love attention. I have the Australian Langshan, but they’re only in Aus unfortunately. Thankfully the Croad Langshan (just called Langshan in the US) has the same cuddly temperament, they’re just a rare breed so you’ll have to hunt around to find some. They’re very demanding of attention but are laid back and easy to handle, they’re wonderful birds.
Another breed I’ve found to consistently be cuddly are the Sumatra, but I hesitantly recommend them since they have some challenges. They can fly ridiculously well, are very noisy, are quite spirited and often bully other birds, and some bloodlines can be very skittish or even aggressive so you have to be careful who you get them off. They’re also very timid and scared of many things; but once they feel safe are the biggest drama queens and attention hogs I’ve met.
Other breeds which are usually healthy and I’ve heard are friendly are Cochin, Faverolles, Orpington, and Belgian d'Uccle. The Malay Game I’ve met at shows are always super friendly as well but are very bird aggressive, so be careful with that. We don’t have access to them in Australia, but I’ve heard nothing but good things about large fowl Russian Orloff and I’d recommend them from what I’ve heard alone.
Hopefully that gives you some ideas! I really hope you end up with some cuddly birds, there’s nothing better than chicken cuddles.
