zeezerizer: I have a tune at the end of the latest episode of the wonderful new show @bettyhbo from the brilliant @crystalmoselle and my very dope old pal @lesleyarfin. I highly recommend checking it out if you enjoy youth, comedy, joy, things that are good, skateboarding, epic girl gangs, and heavy vibes. Also my refrigerator plays the first three notes of the old @hbo theme when you open it and then I sing the rest of it every single time and have a good chuckle...to myself...alone...in my house...every day.

Review : Skate Kitchen (2018)
Tumblr media
2018 seemed to have been a banner year for skateboarding and popular culture.  Aside from Jonah Hill’s directorial debut Mid90s, skateboarders and social media saw an enriched connection, and even mainstream culture started adopting aspects of skate culture (like fashion and attitude), very similar to hip-hop’s integration into the mainstream.  One of the social media skate crews that found expanded success was Skate Kitchen, a female crew of skaters based out of NYC, and the crew was lucky enough to become the focus of a semi-autobiographical film appropriately titled Skate Kitchen.
Camille (Rachelle Vinberg) is a Long Island teenager with a penchant for skating and a love for Instagram clips of skaters from her community.  While attempting to ollie a stair set, Camille injures her vagina, which concerns her mother (Elizabeth Rodriguez) to the point that Camille’s mother makes her promise to stop skating.  This promise, however, coincides with a meeting of the Skate Kitchen collective in New York City, which is an opportunity too good to pass up.  The crew consists of all female skaters, including Janay (Dede Lovelace), Kurt (Nina Moran), Indigo (Ajani Russell), Ruby (Kabrina Adams) and a handful of others.  Camille starts spending more and more time with the crew, who instantly welcomes her, which causes a bigger rift between Camille and her mother.  Camille eventually parts way with her mother and starts spending even more time with the Skate Kitchen crew, and as she hangs out in the skate community more, she begins to make a diverse group of friends, including skater and photographer Devon (Jaden Smith).  Camille gets a job at a grocery store where Devon happens to work, and the time that they end  up spending together starts to get to Skate Kitchen crew member Janay (Dede Lovelace), who previously had a relationship with Devon.  With yet another relationship in jeopardy, Camille dives deep down in hopes of finding peace somewhere.
Crystal Moselle’s film is a study of an outsider in an outsider culture finding a band of rebels that she can (hopefully) join the ranks of.  Camille’s loner nature reflects that of many viewers in the sense that most of her validation comes via social media likes, follows and comments on sites like Instagram and other social media.  This reflection of the concept of ‘the lonely crowd’ permeates Skate Kitchen, as even the crew of girls finds themselves split amongst one another even though their solidarity keeps them watching one another’s backs when it comes to the skateparks and bullying from the male skaters.  The biggest lesson learned in the film, it seems, is that friendship and closeness (as important as they are) are not always easy roads to traverse.
Camille’s journey centers around the search for a surrogate family to replace what she is missing from her blood family.  Camille’s mother certainly loves and cares for her, but her attention becomes divided between care for her daughter and care for herself.  Much of this comes from the fact that Camille chose to live with her dad, only to come to her mom when her maturation from a girl to a woman begins to take place.  This rift of love on limited terms becomes both a barrier against and a driving force for Camille to shape her own identity.  What Camille ultimately learns, however, is that thinking we’re ready to face the world means nothing when compared to the realities of trying to make it on your own.  In the end, family means so much, as the support you can find in them is unmatched compared to even the strongest friendship bonds.
Skate Kitchen is a legitimate crew full of personality, and they bring all of that personality to the screen, which helps bring a sense of realism to the film on top of the entertainment.  The display for the search of peace in a hectic city becomes a side narrative the viewers subliminally take part in, both through the film’s events and the diverse music.  The way that the female perspective is given for two male-dominated cultures (skateboarding directly, and film indirectly) is unique, fresh, and much needed in today’s entertainment climate.  The dynamics of broken homes and how they shape the thought process of a child are painfully displayed without being harped on or used as a preaching point.  Most importantly, the skate photography is top notch, bringing a cinematic quality to the ‘quick clip’ culture.
Rachelle Vinberg brings the energy of a Judy Blume character to the world of skating, complete with a valid skill set and a sense of curiosity to the world unfolding to her.  Dede Lovelace remains tender while displaying a brooding intensity that is fueled by growing jealously, directly and indirectly misplaced.  Nina Moran brings tons of comedic chops along with her skate skills, as well as a laid-back nature balanced with a no-nonsense attitue.  Alani Russell lends an air of mystique to the Skate Kitchen crew, similar to a Zoe Kravitz.  Elizabeth Rodriguez brings the frustration of a young mother to the screen, showing concern when it’s convenient, but always showing a need for self.  Jaden Smith brings a sensitive side to the energy of the male skaters that tend to allow their dominating personality to push the Skate Kitchen members out of their way.  Appearances by Ajani Russell, Jules Lorenzo, Judah Lang, Nico Hirag and Taylor Gray round out the main cast population.
Immediately after viewing, I wished that I had held off on my top 10 list, but upon reflection, I am not 100% sure it would shift my list.  I can say, however, that this was a truly great film, and it will be one that I recommend to friends for years to come.
