Ok so codenames are sort of a whole thing in the story modes of the splatoon games with all the agents so with this I took heavy inspiration from agent 8 and agent 4's outfits!

The particulars to the rules to the event can be found here. Of note, anything for the event must be gen (as in, no ships, not even background ships). Most any medium can work - a few examples are fic, illustrative art, essays/meta/character study, mood boards, physical crafts, edits, memes, incorrect quotes, and music videos. Works in Progress are accepted and encouraged, even if you’ve already posted parts of it. 

Use the prompts as literally or as figuratively as you’d like! All of the prompts do relate directly to Player, however many of them also relate to his friends and family. Have fun with the other characters in the show too! The only limit is that Player needs to be the focus in some way.

For @playerappreciationweek 2024, alt prompt 3: Hacker

Trigger Warnings: none

Summary: The day started out normal for Player. He hacked into the security cameras in a museum in Vancouver at 2AM EST (11PM Vancouver time) so that Carmen could sneak in and steal an artifact before VILE could (they're a global criminal organization, this is important for later), and deleted the footage so that no one would ever know Carmen was there.

It ends abnormally, with Player having dinner with his parents, about to confess everything about his secret vigilante life to them.

Just a quickie for Day One; hope you enjoy!

Okay with the 2024 Player Appreciation Week in march I really want to do something, and i think my best way back in is with a pt.2 to the fic I wrote for it wayyyy back in 2022. I have some ideas on where to head with it but then it's the issue of the expandability of such and which I think will work the best.

I'll link the orginal fic here incase anyone wants a refresher and the 2024 Player Week post but here are my thoughts for a continuation of the fic:

Day 2 - Parents: Direct continuation of Pt.1

Once arriving in Argentina, Players mum finds it difficult to accept letting go of her only child, and after a while (and accidental encouragement from Player himself) ends up phoning and messaging him multiple times a day, always at the worst times, aka all the time. It all culminating in almost ruining an important mission thanks to the eventual escalation. A nice resolution, naturally, but a story about the difficulties of separation and how ignoring/distancing in contrast to the almost obsessive inability to let go, one extreme to the other, isn't the best way to process it at all.

Player POV. Players mother & Carmen, then new team ACME Ivy and Zack and possibly Julia, Chase.

Day 5 - Loyalty: Can be a separate fic or direct continuation of Pt.1

(If a seperte fic, based sometime after the 2 year jump) Chief attempts to poach Player to join her ranks now that he's officially legal to actually hire and back out after the hiatus. Chief assigns Zack & Ivy to get the 'job' done, unbeknownst to them of her actual plans. After an official approach from her senior Agents Julia and Chase and sending him all the ACME merch one could possibly need, unsurprisingly, leads to no avail. Hijinks ensue.

Player POV. Carmen vs Chief + New ACME Zack & Ivy, brief Chase and Julia.

Alt. 3 - Hacker + Day 6 - Abandonment: Direct continuation of pt.1

Due to some self reflection, Player is determined to spread his wings with his new found 'adulthood' and separate himself from being a 'simple hacker' after Carmen unintentionally gets in his head about his role in the team and maybe his lanky physique, truly, she didnt mean it. Its hard being a young adult in the big wide world, trying to make or reinvent a name for yourself. He attempts to cultivate a new 'field agent' identity, eager to get out there one-on-one and in his words; "if Zack can do it, how hard can it be?". Unfortunately underestimated the true training, experience and skill development it takes to do what Carmen does, and do it well. He ends up, quite literally and accidentally, abandoned in a foreign country after failing to make it to the pick up location. With Player on the ground and off his perch, his tech destroyed, AI failing to fill his 'old' position, Player has to hope that he can either turn the drastically crappy situation around, manufacture a 'run in' with ACME or he will probably fall into the remnants of VILE's grip he barely avoided to dodge in the first place.

Player POV. Carmen, non disclosed VILE agents & Maybe ACME.

Summary: Though they are rarely in the same time zone, Player and Carmen have a friendship which spans the globe—literally. Or, 5 times Player and Carmen were in different time zones and one time they were in the same one.

Excerpt from Chapter 1 - Four Hours:

[Location Unknown] — 8pm Western European Time (UTC +0) Niagara Falls, Ontario — 4pm Eastern Daylight Time (UTC -4) Player fidgeted at the table as he filled out the answers on his homework. Technically all his school work was homework, but that didn’t make it less frustrating. He was pretty certain his usual level of diligence was slacking, but what could he do? It was taking most of his concentration to keep from checking his phone every point two-five seconds. His best friend always called around this time, but the recent change to Eastern Daylight Time meant the call he usually got at three would be coming in at four instead. An hour earlier, he’d forgotten about the time shift and had been distracted waiting for the call. At three he was in his room pretending to work diligently on his homework. Of course, that would be when his mom decided to check on him and was—well, let’s just say—less than satisfied with his progress. Thus resulting in the change of locations. Bother. He darted anxious eyes at his mom where she worked at her computer in the living room. She was just as focused on her work as he was supposed to be on his. Muffling the desire to exhale loudly, he returned his focus to his school work. This was his last assignment, then he’d be homework free for the next ten days. Pulling up the browser on his computer, Player began sorting through facts on Switzerland. He was suppose to put together a report for his French class on a different French speaking country. Then give a presentation, in French. Butterflies fluttered in his stomach at the thought of giving an oral report. What was he suppose to do? Just share facts about Switzerland? Well, when it put it that way, maybe it wouldn't be so bad. He could just pretend he was talking to—

In annoyance Chase turns briefly to the young man next to him. He huffs as he turns his eyes back to the road. “Must you wear the helmet?”

“Between Carmen, Julia, and Chief, I have heard about every single incident with you and cars in exhausting detail,” Player tells him, gripping both the door handle and middle console with each hand as if in fear for his life. “Besides, Carmen said I couldn’t get in the car with you without wearing it. I agreed with her.”

It was petrifying. A horrible thought that her love, that affection— hell her ability to feel for others had been stripped away. Like the soft undoing of grandma's handiwork, undoing knot after knot after knot. Shredding personalities like bad knitting. The softest of tasks you could barely pull a finger doing. Like it was nothing. Like robbing his best friend from her own life wasn't criminal.

Summary: Identity discovered, a VILE prisoner, and for the first time since he met her, Player has no idea where on earth Carmen is.

He psychs himself up as best he can for torture or interrogation, but nothing could have prepared him for the real battle to come. A man, that to Player, is more vile than VILE itself.

We don’t have any official dates for 2024 yet, but based on the last two years, likely in the March/April timeframe. We will be sending out a survey in January/February to gauge interest and look for prompts.
