Cyberchase: How It All Started (Episode 3)
This comic was later renamed to Cyberchase Web Adventures Episode 3.
This is third episode, so let's make the intro more abbreviated.
The only credit for the production was a general copyright by the Educational Broadcasting Corporation. It used to be available for free online. Now, I am archiving it for the fans.
I will use the original 2001 version of the panels with the dark blue border when possible. However, if this is unavailable, I will use the redesigned version with the light-blue border.
If you want to see the comic with the simpler animations, go find my curation from Blue Maxima's Flashpoint Archive Project. I can't reproduce the animations on Tumblr.
I'll save my thoughts for the end, unless I absolutely need to make editor's notes.
Go.
Tumblr media
Narration: Having escaped from the clutches of Hacker, Digit returns to Motherboard, and is greeted warmly by Dr. Marbles.
Dr. Marbles: Welcome home, Digit. While we cannot reformat the past - we can upload a brighter future.
Digit: I couldn't have said it better myself, Doc!
Tumblr media
Narration: Hacker is furious that Digit changed sides and returned to Motherboard.
The Hacker: Nobody - not Motherboard, not Dr. Marbles, and certainly not that traitorous tin turkey will stop me from becoming the new ruler of Cyberspace!!!
Delete: Yeah, right boss! The new ruler!
Buzz: Gulp! Whatever you say, boss! Right!
Tumblr media
Narration: Meanwhile, on Earth, three kids who don't know each other are about to have the adventure of their lives.
Narration: Meet Jackie, who has her own sense of style...
Jackie: I gotta organize this stuff!
Tumblr media
Narration: ...and her own way of doing things!
Tumblr media
Narration: Matt lives on a farm with his family, and dreams of being the homerun champ. Little does he know he'll soon be a hero of a different kind.
Tumblr media
Narration: Matt is into Greek Mythology big time!
Tumblr media
Narration: This is Inez - A computer whiz.
Narration: She loves to visit the Cyberworld of the Internet - But never imagined she could really go there!
Editor's Note: Yeah, I still don't know why they made Inez white here.
Tumblr media
Narration: Inez has to get to the library before it closes, but she has a bunch of errands to run first.
Inez: Oh, no, this is not good at all!
Editor's Note: There is a later version of this page where they decided that Nezzie needed a helmet. Safety first.
Tumblr media
Editor's Note: And now, we play a flash game called "Bike Route".
Tumblr media
Inez: Oh Boy! I've got a lot of errands to run and not much time!
Tumblr media
Inez: I've made a map that shows all of the places I need to go. Let me show you.
Tumblr media
Editor's Note: Her checklist consists of Home, Betty's House, Post Office, Video Store, and Library
Tumblr media
Narration: Inez needs to figure out the shortest number of blocks to get all her chores done and get to the library on time. Can you help her do it?
Narration: Here's a map to use. Inez can do the chores in any order, but she has to end up at the library.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Narration: This box shows the number of blocks you have left to get to the library in time.
Narration: These are all of the errands Inez needs to do.
Narration: Click on the blinking dots to move Inez around.
Tumblr media
Narration: Well done!
Narration: You got to the library just in time! Now let's go on with the adventure...
Tumblr media
Narration: Back in Cyberspace, Hacker works on a plan that will shut down Motherboard's computer circuits once and for all.
Buzz: Grumph mumph gurgle glunk
The Hacker: Charge me up, boys! It's time to wreak some Cyber-havoc!
Delete: Right, boss, right away!
Tumblr media
Narration: Inez, Matt and Jackie are about to meet for the very first time.
Inez: Cool! I made it to the library in time!
Jackie: Man, I've got a ton of homework!
Matt: I can't wait to find out more about that Cerberus!
Editor's Note: The books in Jackie's hands have the writing backwards. The larger one is titled "How to Dye Your Own Fabric". The smaller one is too blurry to make out the title.
Tumblr media
Narration: Dr. Marbles is busy giving Motherboard a routine upgrade.
Digit: Here we go, Doc. The Didge has whatever you need!
Tumblr media
Narration: Meanwhile, inside the Grim Wreaker, Hacker discovers Inez, Matt and Jackie inside the library.
The Hacker: Yes.. Yes! Pay attention you degradable dunce-buckets, Motherboard's hard drive is about to crash!
Tumblr media
Narration: Check out the adventures of the Cybersquad Online & on TV
Narration: Check TV Schedule
Editor's Note: This is another case where I believe the original background for this panel has been lost. This panel states "Check out the adventures of the Cybersquad online & on TV". However, the alt text states "STAY TUNED! THE NEW ADVENTURES OF CYBERCHASE ARE STARTING ONLINE & ON TV JANUARY 21ST!"
And that's the end of the comic.
So, what did I think about it? I enjoyed it. They made some odd choices with some of these panels. The first panel shows Motherboard with the background she got after the virus infection during Season 1 Episode 1 "Lost My Marbles". The second panel clearly shows the Crystal of Calamore that The Hacker retrieved during Season 1 Episode 11 "A Day at the Spa". If this is still canon, then that is a very confusing detail. Of course, with all the expansion to The Hacker's backstory on the show over the years, including contradictory information, we don't know whether this is still canon.
I don't understand why they made the library look like a circus tent. I see circles, squares, and triangles on the railing and trees. They must have adapted a screenshot from the Poddleville Pilot. I can't tell what's sticking out of Matt's bag on that panel. It almost looks like The Map from Dora the Explorer. I wonder if that was an easter egg.

Have you ever read "Cyberchase Web Adventures"? That was the series of five official web comics that released on the pbskids website back in the day. They aren't on the site anymore. However, they are on WayBack Machine, and people have assembled them in full for Internet Archive and Flashpoint Archive uploads. Episode 1-3, "How It All Started", was a prequel to the show. Episode 4, "Numberless Poddles" was an original Poddleville story. Episode 5, "Hacker Jack" was an original Tikiville story.
Yes! I have!! They're charming little webcomics. And yeah, wayback is a blessing fr. I'm so nostalgic for the older cyberchase website design from when I was little.
I gave them a revisit, lmao, so much of it is broken, but it was still fun to read. I find it interesting how it contradicts "Lost My Marbles" when it comes to Digit. Personally I prefer the idea of him being fully bad, lmao, which we got a sneak peek of I think in All The Right Angles. The one with Ivanka. It's also where I got the idea of Jackie being a cheerleader and Matt being most into baseball.
But yes! I agree, you're right 4 and 5 are. You can even see they used some screenshots as backgrounds/characters even. It feels like when they release a video game alongside a movie, and you can tell they had only a vague idea of what the plot was and some access to official assets.
Also it's funny in Numberless Poddles, they say they only took their numbers but Buzz and Delete are standing around with a bunch of eggs. It's also either very broken or very zany. Suddenly the kids put giant HBD hats on the Hacker team xD
Oh my goodness, I forgot 5 was a comic. The style is so fun honestly. Idk if I can read it all, there's something about a form. xD I couldn't find the flashpoint or archive you mentioned, so I used Wayback
Thanks for the ask tho, it was fun visiting the webisodes! C:

just thinkin bout modern media and things (click for essay)
so the real problem with everything is that media used to be generally segmented by targeted age ranges? like, there was separate media for babies than there was for children and adolescents and separate content that was targeted at adults. but that didnt mean that targeted demographics had to absolutely necessarily stay within the ranges of media that was targeted at them. it was just nice to have more segmented categories of media that could be appropriate for little children while still being decently interesting and exciting (i.e., adventures of winnie the pooh, arthur, dragon tales, cyberchase etc.) and 8-14 bracket media that had more depth and character arcs (i.e., justice league, batman the animated series, animes like fullmetal alchemist etc) and then more adult shows like the adult swim lineup that could get away with more crap past the radar.
the reasons for this were multiple, including the typical capitalist reasons of it's easier to target merchandise at groups when you split people up by age, and it makes the moral guardians happier to have something to regulate when it comes to making things "safer" for certain age groups as well. all of these reasons can have problematic implications, such as lgbtq+ censorship, cartoons for the sole purpose of selling toys, poor quality of writing and flanderization over time, etc. which we were dealing with throughout the 2000s. the ability of web content creators to make things like homestuck and welcome to night vale and undertale without the intervention of editors and marketers and regulators has been amazing, especially for brand new forms of creative content that have never before been seen, and also bringing creators closer to fans. fans also now have unprecedented abilities in steering storylines and affecting the trajectory of media. but the dark side to this is something that i think requires much more introspection and discussion. you can have fandoms like the voltron fandom that come out of this and actually threaten real creators in real life on social media, which is really bad. you can have problems associated with the increasing push for monetization of content, which brings us back to the problems of the 2000s all over again (the more businesspeople you involve with media, the sour-er things get over time). it's just too many cooks. the golden age of the freedom of web content without forced monetization was far, far too short.
i tried watching a tiktok that got posted to my twitter feed today and like. what the fuck. i have not seen that many tiktoks, but i swear to god i cannot understand the target demographics of tiktok in general. tiktok is an app that seems to show you a neverending stream of content sludge (now generated by ai!). the content ranges from gross to just plain insulting. theres this weird trend on some tiktok videos when showing off an object or item to like... do this weird little dance to show it off? kind of reminds me of when you're jingling keys in a baby's face? it's like a very weird little dance but everybody seems to do it... it's quite cringe, made me uncomfy lol
but anyway it just... seemed to me like doing cute dance moves like that, showing shiny objects or slime or whatever it is, seems to be the kind of content that aims to gain the visual attention of like, little kids or babies or something. but then you go to the next video and it's like, something veeery sexual or violent or just otherwise totally inappropriate. additionally, it's largely mindless content. there are no lessons to be learned from it, if anything it actively rots your brain cells. is this what our parents thought tv was like?? holy shit. i could never understand why television was called "the idiot box" because you could learn things on tv. there was a lot of different and good content on tv. but all content on tiktok is the same. because the popularity of content gets ranked and rewarded by an algorithm. it's sad and sickly ironic that there is less variety and quality in user-generated content now than there has ever been, and it's all because of monetization. the web should be the ultimate free platform to create and distribute whatever you want, it shouldn't be this monotonic sludge of content that is most definitely inappropriate for little children, so for fuck's sake stop targeting it at them with shiny objects, and incredibly boring and repetitive to many adults, so how about make it more interesting and diverse. i read this article the other day about how blippi, the youtube equivalent of barney, never features any actual people on his show. he plays with toys and explains how machines work and makes up shitty songs about them, but he never goes the mr rogers route of talking about feelings or meeting with kids from diverse backgrounds or dealing with topics like loss or grief or fear or anger or love in a way that children can understand. there's a fear to be genuine there, because the more these topics are discussed in children's media, the more adults DON'T want them discussed with their children. their reasoning being "they're not old enough, it will scare them, they can't handle it." don't you think it'll scare them more when they grow up emotionally stunted and unable to understand even the most basic of their own emotions?
it seems now more than ever, trying new or different ideas with media is just an invitation to be called "cringe" and have brigading youtubers after you to use you for "content" in their fun little 3 hour critical essay videos. anything sentimental that dares to ask its audience to actually feel something like genuine joy or sadness or excitement is mocked - not postmodern enough for you, i see. anything cool or new or fun just gets ignored or shut down. it's wrong. it sucks. why are we still putting up with this? why is it just okay?

Cyberchase: How It All Started (Episode 1)
This comic was later renamed to Cyberchase Web Adventures Episode 1.
When I make posts about certain Cyberchase characters or important events, I sometimes show panels from the prequel web comic "How It All Started", which was released online in December 2001, a month or so before Cyberchase premiered. I have restrained myself from just posting the whole thing, since I don't own it.
However, it is no longer available on the live pbskids.org website. It is available through archives, but there are some difficulties in tracking it down due to missing images in some places. Additionally, even when it was available on the live pbskids.org website, it was free for all to view, so posting it here wouldn't hurt anyone.
The best way to enjoy the web comic is through the FlashPoint Archive Project. This is because the webpages used simple animations in some places. Essentially, each comic page is treated like a tradition animation cell. They have a background layer, and then the webpage places images on top of it that can be exchanged for one another. This produces simple three-frame animations for things like flashing lights or repetitive arm and eye movements. This isn't something I can easily reproduce on Tumblr, since it isn't like posting a single animated GIF. There may be some round-about way to convert it (i.e. take video of the webpage animating and convert it to GIF), but I'm not going to do that. So, this will just be still images. There is no author or illustrator credited for this. The webpages mention a copyright of 2001 for the Educational Broadcasting Corporation, but I don't know if they actually assembled the content in-house, or if Nelvana or WNET did it. I just want to make sure that everyone is aware that I do not own this. I am presenting someone else's creation here, in an unedited form.
There is one other thing I should point out. When the comic was originally released in 2001, it has a certain framing to it.
Tumblr media
However, in 2002, the Cyberchase website got redesigned, and the comic was changed as well. Some animations were removed, some images were replaced with lower-quality images, and some assets were altered to fit in a new frame. They started calling these webisodes to fit in with Cyberchase Web Adventures, which included an original Poddleville story and one about Hacker trying to knock over Tikis in Tikiville.
Tumblr media
I prefer the original framing, and I dug into the archives to find as many panels with the original framing that I could. However, I was unable to find the original framing for a few pages. It may be possible for someone with better Photoshop skills to try to put the assets back in their original forms. I'm not that person, but the assets are on the Internet Archive and the Flashpoint Project for anyone who wants to try. In those cases, I will use the new framing. All of the images necessary to understand the story are intact. However, there are some special cases that I will note when we get to them.
Anyway, my plan here is to show the panels, transcribe the narration and dialogue, and make some commentary at the end. So, let's begin.
Tumblr media
Narration: Cyberspace... A place where time and space are one... A place where the lines between reality and imagination no longer exist... A place where anyone can go and anything can happen.
Tumblr media
Narration: Throughout Cyberspace there are thousands of places called cybersites, each very different from the other, and all under the watchful eye of their thoughtful and peace-loving leader: Motherboard.
Tumblr media
Narration: The heads of several cybersites gather for an important meeting with Motherboard to discuss the future.
Tumblr media
Narration: Motherboard tells everyone that all is well, and reminds them that peach and harmony are the key to the future.
Dr Marbles(?): Together we are strong
Assembled Heads(?) of Cybersites (Ava of Symmetria, Sheriff Judy of Sensible Flatts, The King of Happily Ever After, Zeus of Mt. Olympus, an unknown character, Ollie Nollie of Solaria, Lucky of R-Fair-City, and Two-Headed Sam of Castleblanca): To Motherboard
Editors note: Motherboard is absent from this panel during this version of the comic. I'm not sure if this was supposed to be a shot from Motherboard's POV, or if they just wanted to wait another page before showing her. That speech bubble is so far away from Dr. Marbles, that I wasn't sure if he was even the one saying the line. Maybe they were implying that Motherboard was speaking through the screen behind Dr. Marbles, even though it doesn't have anything on it.
The second version of the comic adds a screen with Motherboard to the background layer, implying that it was supposed to be her saying the line all along. This is confusing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Narration: Motherboard exists in a vast, hi-tech computer center known as control central.
Tumblr media
Narration: Motherboard is the brain of the giant computer system that oversees all of Cyberspace.
Tumblr media
Narration: The brilliant Dr. Marbles is responsible for keeping Motherboard's parts working smoothly and efficiently at all times.
Dr. Marbles: Your memory is now optimized, Motherboard.
Tumblr media
Narration: Needing an assistant with a high level of intelligence, Dr. Marbles assembles a cyborg who calls himself The Hacker.
The Hacker (thinking): Hmmm, someday I'll take over all of Cyberspace!
Tumblr media
Narration: Wanting an assistance of his own, Hacker makes a robotic Cybird he names Digit.
Digit: Yoikes!
Tumblr media
Narration: One night, while Marbles is away, Hacker removed the Encryptor Chip from Motherboard... ...and hides it inside a secret vault.
The Hacker: Without the Encryptor Chip, Motherboard cannot function. Ha-Ha-Ha!
Digit: Stop! You can't do this!
Tumblr media
Narration: Digit needs to figure out the combination to the safe so he can replace the Encryptor Chip inside Motherboard before it's too late!
Digit: This is definitely not going to be easy!
Tumblr media
Editor's Note: And then, we play "Crack Hacker's Safe". This game still exists on the pbskids.org website almost 25 years later. It was done in Javascript, so it survived the death of Flash that took out most of the rest of the Cyberchase game library. Feel free to pretend that Digit is the one pressing the buttons for these panels. Make up dialogue if you wish.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Narration: Congratulations you did it!
Tumblr media
Narration: With the Encryptor Chip safely back in place, Motherboard tells Hacker he has to leave.
Motherboard: Your hostile actions cannot be tolerated, Hacker. You are no longer welcome here.
Tumblr media
Narration: The power is drained from Hacker and he is placed inside a remote-controlled Cyberpod.
The Hacker: Someday... somehow, I'll return. And when I do, I'll take over all of Cyberspace!
Dr. Marbles: Page down, Hacker. Your file is closed!
Tumblr media
Narration: Hacker is banished to the farthest reaches of The Northern Frontier.
The Hacker: NOOOOOOO....!
Tumblr media
Narration: Neither Motherboard nor Dr. Marbles realize that Hacker has taken Digit with him.
The Hacker: I'll be back! Ha-Ha-Ha!
Digit: Yoikes Lemme outa here!
Tumblr media
Narration: Check out webisode 2... ...and find out about Hacker's Evil plan ... and what happens to Digit!
Editor's Note: So, we have the narration inviting us to watch webisode 2. Normally, you would expect the alt text attached to the web page to match the text for the image, so that if someone was unable to load the image, they would still get the text. The alt text is: "Tune in next week and find out about Hacker's evil plan and what happens to Digit!"
This leads me to believe that there was a different version of this image back in 2001 that had narration that was either the same as the alt text, or more similar. However, it appears that that version of the image was replaced, and the original version was not archived.
That's the end of the comic, so let's get to my commentary.
So, what do I think about this comic? I enjoyed reading it. I like the idea of The Hacker's schemes to topple Motherboard starting before the main virus. I find it a bit odd that he was able to remove the Encryptor Chip without either Motherboard or Dr. Marbles being alerted instantly, since it is an essential part.
I suppose Digit was already a good guy at this point. Otherwise, he would have looked the other way, Motherboard would have ceased function, and we wouldn't have gotten the show at all. Now, Digit never being a bad guy is a controversial idea in the fan community. If he was always against The Hacker's evil plans, then it removes the idea of him being genuinely bad and having a change of heart later. I'm also not sure why The Hacker took Digit along after he foiled his plans this first time. Perhaps Digit was able to hide this betrayal from him at the time. But then, who else would have known about The Hacker's secret vault, or the fact that he stole the Encryptor Chip?
It is questionable how much of this is still canon. The Hacker's origin story in particular has been expanded in the years that followed. The modern story talks about him wanting to help Motherboard, and then turning evil later. Meanwhile, this original origin story had him turning evil immediately. At this point, they had not even created the young Hacker that we see in flashbacks, since he only appears (from birth) in his final form.
The show has also animated a flashback of Dr. Marbles exiling Hacker in the same cyberpod. But then, we got Season 5 Episode 6 "The Flying Parallinis, where his banishment involved being trapped on top of Mount Wayupthere until the Parallinis accidentally released him. Both items may have been ret-conned in Season 12 Episode 8 "Hacker Hugs a Tree", when we see him banished via portal. He is also alone in that episode, so he didn't bring Digit along with him in that version of events.
Also, can we go back to the board room with the leaders of a few of the Cybersites?
Tumblr media
This was early days for the show, so they only had so many characters created. Now, Zeus makes sense. He is the king of the gods on the Mt. Olympus Cybersite. The King from Happily Ever After also makes sense. Judge Trudy makes sense, I suppose. Back then, we only really knew her and her sister, Sheriff Judy, from Sensible Flatts. This was long before Sensible Flatts had a separate mayor.
Ava from Symmetria is an interesting choice. She runs the factory that produces the symmetrical objects, but is she also the head-of-state on that Cybersite? We don't see anything on that Cybersite other than the factory, so maybe the site really is just the factory.
I'm surprised to see Two-Headed Sam here. We know he runs the Cryoxide factory in Castleblanca, but this isn't really an Ava situation where the entire site is just one factory. Is Sam also the head-of-state across Castleblanca? That would explain his monopoly on the Cryoxide business, and it is a concerning conflict of interest. This was before the mayor we all remember from the Halloween Howl.
Ollie Nollie was the cart driver on Solaria, and Lucky was the cab driver on R-Fair City. I get that Solaria is mostly a vacation resort, and R-Fair City is an amusement park. But it's still weird to me that these two would be the heads-of-state over there.
Does anyone recognize the character in the top right? I can't find any reference to him.
Edit: I was looking back at S01 E21 "Less Than Zero", where we see a meeting of the Cyber Council. They used the same room, and the characters are in much the same arrangement. Our mystery character is replaced by the Mayor of Poddleville. The Mayor of Poddleville is easily the most senior member here, due to his place in the pilot. So, I'm a little surprised that he was the one character to change between "How It All Started" and this episode.
We also get Lachesis, one of the three fates from Greek Mythology, seated across from Dr. Marbles. I'm not sure why only one of the three fates gets a seat at this table. Why would Olympus get two representatives on the council?

Cyberchase Web Adventures Episode 5: Hacker Jack by Ron Barrett
Ron Barrett is an illustrator and comic artist who is probably best known for illustrating "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs", a classic story written by his wife, Judi. However, he also produced a series of web comics for Cyberchase that were released on the pbskids.org website. He produced a single Cyberchase web comic in 2005, and then a set of three one-shot Cyberchase web comics in 2011. None of these comics are on the website anymore.
The web comic from 2005, Hacker Jack, was the final entry in the Cyberchase Web Adventures line of web comics. This series included the original three-part prequel comic and the original Poddleville story, "Numberless Poddles".
However, Hacker Jack was an entirely different style. Those four comics were assembled like animation cells. They placed the background layers first, and then added separate images that they rendered on top of of the background. By swapping between different images, they could make simple two-frame or three-frame animations. Hacker Jack was drawn in a more traditional comic panel format.
As i said before, this comic is not on the pbskids.org website anymore. Additionally, it is not on Ron Barrett's personal website. I am only posting it here for the purposes of archiving it and sharing it with the fans. All credit for its creation goes to Ron Barrett.
I will transcribe all of the dialogue. I will leave my comments to the end, unless i feel it is absolutely necessary. Let's begin.
Tumblr media
Buzz or Delete: Gee boss, look at all those freaky tikis!
Buzz or Delete: Everyone in Tikiville is flipping out!
The Hacker: Can the cackling! Prepare to land!
Tikiville Citizen #1: Hack attack!
Tikiville Citizen #2: Don't walk, run!
Tikiville Citizen #3: Taxi!
The Hacker: Behold! - The Great Tiki of Tikiville! When I topple this giant, all the tikis will fall... like dominoes!
The Hacker: Then this site will be mine! All mine! Ha Ha Ha!
Delete: But boss, how can you topple a tiki that's this big? Grunt!
Buzz: Grunt!
The Hacker: I am a man with a plan! - Look!
Tumblr media
The Hacker: As it was said by another genius long ago...
Poster of Archimedes: Give me place to stand and a lever long enough and i shall move the earth.
The Hacker: I shall call my invention the Hacker Jack!
Buzz: It'll never work.
The Hacker: You dare to doubt my brilliant design?
Delete: Well... um yeah!
The Hacker: Give me that ice cream pop and i will make a model to test it!
Delete: Hey!
The Hacker: SHHH-LURP
The Hacker: This stick will be my lever
The Hacker: And this will be my fulcrum!
The Hacker: I press down on the lever and...
The ice cream pop stick: Snap!
Buzz: I told you it wouldn't work.
The Hacker: Zip it!
The Hacker: Hmmm! I need to use something stronger, something that won't break... something just like...
The Hacker: This leg from your chair!
Tumblr media
The Hacker: And now to test my new, improved lever
The Hacker: I press down and...
Delete: Nothing happened!
The Hacker: Hmmm... a minor adjustment... I'll move the fulcrum closer to the box and...
Buzz: A full-crummy idea!
Buzz and Delete: The Hacker Jack works!
Delete: Now we have all the parts we need to build the super-size Hacker Jack!
Delete: Huff-puff
The Hacker: Ow! Watch that board!
Tumblr media
The Hacker: All is ready! I shall jump upon the Hacker Jack and set in motion the toppling of the tikis. Then - I will rule supreme!
Narration: Or will he? Can you stop The Hacker?
Buzz: Lookin' good, boss!
Motherboard: Hacker alert!
Motherboard: ... the Cybersquad needs you to invent a machine
Motherboard: ... stop Hacker from toppling the tikis!
And so, we reach the end of this comic. There was option to send in drawings of your invention. These drawings were placed in a gallery on the website. I was able to preseve this gallery. One day, i may grab some pictures from that gallery to share.
As i said before, this was the end of the Cyberchase Web Adventures line. It ended on this cliffhanger, so we don't know if The Hacker was successful, or what invention was used to try to stop him.
While I enjoyed the comic, it doesn't really fit in with the rest of the Cyberchase Web Adventures series. I find it interesting that Buzz is openly criticizing The Hacker here. He would grumble a bit in the show, but i don't remember him saying it to his face. And then, The Hacker casually rips off one of Delete's antenna caps.

Cyberchase: How It All Started (Episode 2)
This comic was later renamed to Cyberchase Web Adventures Episode 2.
Okay, I made another post awhile ago about "Cyberchase: How It All Started (episode 1). Since this is episode 2, I'll put an abbreviated version of my disclaimers below.
In 2001, the panels were released in their original form. In 2002, the panels were re-done as part of a site redesign. I will use the original 2001 version wherever possible, but will fall back to the redesign when the original assets are missing.
No author or illustrator was credited beyond a general copyright notice for the Educational Broadcasting Corporation. I do not own this. This was previously available on the pbskids.org website for free before being taken down. I am only posting it here for archival purposes and for making it available to fans again.
My tumblr post cannot properly demonstrate the animations or the original web games that came with this web comic. You'll need to seek out Blue Maxima's Flashpoint Archive project to get that part of the experience.
I will transcribe all of the dialogue and give most of my thought at the end. I will only add editors notes in the middle if I feel it is absolutely necessary.
Let's begin.
Tumblr media
Narration: Hacker lives out his exile in the gloom of the Northern Frontier, but never gives up the idea of taking control of Cyberspace from Motherboard.
Tumblr media
Narration: In need of a Cybercraft able to go anywhere in Cyberspace, Hacker builds the Grim Wreaker.
The Hacker: Hurry, my foolishly feathered fiend, for Cyberspace will soon be mine! Ha-Ha-Ha!
Digit: Ohh... I wish I was back with Motherboard!
Tumblr media
Narration: Having been weakened by Motherboard, Hacker invents a Recharger Chair to restore his power...
Narration: ...and adds Buzz and Delete to his team of troublemakers.
The Hacker: Charge me up, you duncebuckets. It's time to create some Cyber-chaos!
Tumblr media
Narration: Tom prove to Motherboard he means business, Hacker scrambles the computer circuitry of Valussa, plunging the Cybersite into total darkness!
Valussa Citizen #1: What's Happening?!
Valussa Citizen #2: Hey, I can't see!
Editor's Note: This page flashed the speech bubbles of the Valussa residents on and off at random. While I have presented only the two that were visible in the screenshot, I will add the text for the other ones below.
Valussa Citizen #3: I'm afraid of the dark!
Valussa Citizen #4: The lights don't work!
Valussa Citizen #5: Help!
Tumblr media
Buzz: Way to go boss! They can't see nothin'!
Delete: Yeah, boss! You sure turned out their lights! Hee-hee-hee!
The Hacker: Yessss! I am the King of Chaos!
Digit (thinking): Wuh-oh! He's gotta be stopped!
Tumblr media
Digit: If I don't do what Hacker tells me to do he'll... I don't want to think about it!
Narration: Digit is torn between his fear of Hacker and his friendship with Motherboard.
Tumblr media
Narration: Digit, in a brave attempt to save Valussa without Hacker finding out, sends them a coded message that contains the secret.
Buzz: Huh?? What's that scrawny Boid doing?
Tumblr media
Narration: Can you help crack Digit's code and save the Cyber Citizens of Valussa? To do it you'll need to use a secret decoder.
Editor's Note: At this point, we play a game of Crack Digit's Code. The game doesn't appear to be listed on the site anymore. Here is the solution.
Tumblr media
Digits Message: Move moon ray left two feet
Tumblr media
Message: You did it!
Narration: Thanks to you and Digit, the power is returned to Valussa. For now, Hacker has been stopped.
Tumblr media
Narration: Hacker learns that Digit helped Motherboard save Valussa.
The Hacker: How dare you betray The Hacker?!!
Tumblr media
Digit: I'll show that green-faced flake he can't do this to the Didge!
Narration: Using his all purpose beak, Digit tries to escape from the cage.
Tumblr media
Narration: Free at last, Digit leaves Hacker, Buzz, and Delete behind...
Narration: ...and flies back to Motherboard!
Digit: I'm outta here!
The Hacker: Come back here, you ungrateful Cyberturkey!
Tumblr media
Narration: Check out Webisode 3 to meet The Cyberchase Gang!
Editor's Note: This 2001 version of this final page has alt text for its image that does not match the text on the panel. The alt text says: "Come back next week to meet the rest of the Cyberchase gang!". This leads me to believe that there was once a different image for this final panel that was replaced when the website was redesigned. However, the old version was not archived.
That's the end of the comic, so let's get to my commentary.
So, this comic gives us our first look at a Cybersite called Valussa. This Cybersite has not been mentioned in the show or other Cyberchase media up to this point. I wonder if they will ever bring it back as a nod to the older fans.
It's great to see Digit betraying The Hacker to save Valussa. He had previously betrayed The Hacker to retrieve Motherboard's Encryptor Chip after The Hacker stole it and hid it in a secret vault. We never see The Hacker discover that first betrayal, but he discovers the second one, and immediately puts Digit in a cage. However, he built Digit with a multi-tool in his beak, and Digit is able to escape. This appears to be the same cage that was used during Season 1 Episode 3 "R-Fair City".
The comic does a good job of setting up more of The Hacker's early career in villainy, and it sets up Digit fully defecting to Motherboard. I'm not sure how much of this is still canon, as The Hacker's backstory has been expanded and ret-conned over the years. Buzz and Delete's origin is kept vague here, but the lore from Buzz and Delete Save the Day, featuring Botopolis, still fits in the empty space.
I'm not sure what Dr. Marbles and Motherboard did to The Hacker's power supply. They make a big point of having drained him before sending him off. We see him building a chair that can recharge his supply, but then he needs periodic recharges whenever the episode needs him out of the way for a bit. I assume they didn't have him running back and forth between a recharger pod while he was working for Motherboard. It seems that his ability to hold a charge long-term was affected in some way when he was banished.

Cyberchase Character Discussion (for your local Cyberchase trivia quiz) - #3: Jackie
Here we go again. I've made this style of post about Inez and Matt, and now it's Jackie's turn.
#3: Jackie
Let's start with her bio from "Meet the Cybersquad". Again, this almost 25 years old now, so who knows how much of it is still canon.
Tumblr media
So, we get our introduction to Jackie. She's smart, funny, has a plan, and is over-the-top. Yeah, that's accurate so far.
Tumblr media
For some reason, this page was not in her original bio when they released it in 2001. They went back and added this page later in 2002. This is the only bio that I have seen that had content added like this. This page lets us know that her favorite color is yellow, and she loves tofu burgers. I don't know if the show has confirmed that she is a vegetarian or vegan. She is shown to care about animals, so I wouldn't be surprised if she was canonically a vegetarian.
Her favorite book is one that I hadn't heard about until now: "Walk Two Moons" by Sharon Creech. In this story, the 13 year old protagonist, Salamanca (Sal) Hiddle, goes on a cross-country road-trip to visit her mother. There are themes of coming to term with loss and building new relationships. It makes me wonder if, at some point in development, the show-runners might have been interested in giving Jackie a tragic loss similar loss to Sal. I haven't seen the later seasons where they bring in the kid's families, but I don't believe they have gone that route so far.
For her favorite music, we get two bands: Destiny's Child and NSYNC. These are very much a product of the time. Destiny's Child actually disbanded in 2006, as the members went off to do solo work. NSYNC disbanded in 2002, and then reunited in 2023. Well, we know that Jackie loves her R&B and Pop music, so I'm sure she found other bands to follow since then.
Tumblr media
Her favorite movie is Shrek, which only came out in 2001. Matt and Inez have definitely sent her all the memes that have come out about that movie since then. Her pet peeves are bugs and anything messy. Yeah, that still tracks. She has a "Wheaton Terrier" named Brandy. I don't know if the spelling has changed over the years, or if they just made a spelling mistake in her bio, but I have only seen it spelled as "Wheaten".
Jackie also gets a bio from Nelvana, which is pretty cool. I've only been able to find surviving archives of bios for her and Matt. They have sections for Inez, Dr. Marbles, Motherboard, The Hacker, Buzz, and Delete. However, all of those are left empty in the surviving archives of the pages. I don't know if bios were completed for those other characters.
Tumblr media
We get emphasis on the point of Jackie being organized. We also get more insight into how she solves problems. She uses diagrams, charts, and graphs among other things. She also touched on her tendency to use initials as shorthand for things. I remember the Blue Bunny Place (B.B.P) from "Of All The Luck". Was she hip in 2002? Is she still hip now? I'm not qualified to say.
We also get an introduction to Jackie through the official prequel web comic, "How It All Started: Episode 3". We see Jackie making her own skirt out of strips of fabric. I assume it is for cheer-leading.
Tumblr media
Narration: Meanwhile, on Earth, three kids who don't know each other are about to have the adventure of their lives.
Jackie: I gotta organize this stuff
Narration: meet Jackie, who has her own sense of style...
Tumblr media
Narration: And her own way of doing things!
Here's Jackie's Official Cyberchase Trading Card.
Tumblr media
When they picked her favorite line as "Make room! I gotta pace!", they probably picked her most iconic line. She loves video games, piano, and foreign languages, which is great. We do get to see her play an unnamed videogame during Season 1 Episode 25 "A Battle of Equals". The hero "San Man" is trying to save the environment by stopping the villains that are trying to pollute it. One villain is called Johnny Grime. There are number riddles, and they are the same sort of riddles that the kids solve during the episode.
Tumblr media
I don't think we ever see her playing piano or speaking a second language on the show. Quick question: What are those shoes that she wears? Inez has a pair or blue boots. Matt has a pair of red and white sneakers. Jackie's shoes are a little harder to place. They are purple, and they have considerable heels. Were these meant to be high-tops? I don't know that I've seen high-tops with heels in that size before.
The big thing that people remember Jackie for are her dramatic outbursts. And her most iconic one is probably from Season 3 Episode 4 "A Piece of the Action". You can tell that someone in the animation department had fun with this one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's a transcript.
Jackie: Great! Now we'll never get into Hacker's control center. And if we can't get in there we can't stop Hacker. And if we can't stop Hacker, he'll erase Motherboard's memory with the magnetite! Cyberspace is doomed! Doomed I tell you! Doo-hoo-hoo-hoomed!
Matt: And the award for best dramatic outburst of today goes to Jackie!
Jackie: Matt!
What else can I say about Jackie. Well, she has an amazing tolerance for cold weather. Even in Arctic Cybersites, she still made do with the same short skirt.
Tumblr media
Anyway, here's the prototype for Jackie. She had a completely different hairstyle and outfit. She was also called Julie. Again, I consider her current design an upgrade from the prototype.
Tumblr media
And here's the Who's Who document on her.
Tumblr media
We get more discussion on Jackie being a gymnast and artist. She loves Instant Messaging. I guess that would have been AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) at the time.

Cyberworld QBorgs (part 1) - How We Got Here
Hey, I'm posting something that isn't Cyberchase-related. How novel. There may be some overlap between fans of Cyberchase and fans of this other thing, though.
So, from around 1999 to around 2003, there was a company called Cyberworld International Corporation. They wanted to created web-based multi-media experiences. The idea was that you could make websites and web media more interesting if you gave the user a 3d virtual world to wander around in. Let me transcribe the text from a 2003 Internet Archive capture of their homepage.
Tumblr media
Richmedia on the Web has never been so easy.
Cyberworld's revolutionary approach to web development lets you produce 3D multimedia web environments in days rather than months.
Seamlessly integrate multimedia products into a 3D environment without modeling and significant programming. Create a lifelike and interactive online experience for you, your company or your customers.
Let Cyberworld dramatically reduce your time to market and cost of web production.
That's their mission statement.
The 3D worlds that they produced were known as QBORGs. They were playable via a proprietary browser known as the Cyberworld QBORG Browser. Surprisingly, as of 2024, this browser still works on Windows 11. Here's the regular version of the browser. This is the most recent version, 5.3. This is the one that will run most, if not all, of the games.
Tumblr media
Quite possibly their most famous game was "Pokemon 2000 Adventure". This one used a custom version of the browser with tons of Pokemon branding.
Tumblr media
For many years, these games were completely unavailable. Due to their strange file structure, many of them were not archived properly on the Wayback Machine. Additionally, setting them up on a webserver for the proprietary browser to access them was apparently pretty tricky.
The Flashpoint Archive project is a group that handles the preservation of web games. As the name suggests, their big thing is flash games. However, they have expanded over the years to cover plenty of obsolete web technologies. Here's a link to their project: https://flashpointarchive.org/
And here's a link to a page talking about the different web technologies that they cover, as well as technologies that they plan to cover: https://flashpointarchive.org/datahub/Platforms
In 2023, there were several breakthroughs in reviving the Cyberworld QBORG content within the Flashpoint Project. A former employee from Cyberworld International Corporation, Eddie Ruminski, came forward with CDs containing the missing assets for several games. Flashpoint Project members, including DoomTay and AL_2713, worked out how to setup the QBORG Browser inside Flashpoint.
The Flashpoint Project isn't yet at the point of making the games part of its official release, but that is planned to happen. In the meantime, it is possible to obtain the asset packs for the games and load them in the Flashpoint Project yourself. Here's a screenshot I took while playing the "Pokemon 2000 Adventure" game.
Tumblr media
Now, this map is covered with 2D sprites of tree, which may make it a bit harder to see the 3D modeling. Here's a screenshot that I took in a different game, "Cyberworld Olympiad" that shows a 3D building in the background. It also shows a floating robot, who was there to ask trivia questions around the Olympics.
Tumblr media
I never played with these growing up. I didn't hear about until many years later. I would have found these to be amazing at the time though. Remember that this was 1999-2003. It was still pretty early days for 3D-rendered games playable in your web browser.
I am planning to play through the available games and make some tumblr posts containing my thoughts on them. However, before I did that, I wanted to put together a post discussing what the games are, and crediting the people who helped bring them back roughly 20 years later.
I'm not sure how long it will be before The FlashPoint Project includes these games in an official release. That will be the point when running the games will be as simple as downloading the Flashpoint Infinity software, selecting the game from a list, and launching it.
As I've shown, the games can be played through the Flashpoint Infinity software, but there are additional steps required. I put together an Internet Archive Upload of the assets with some instructions on how to load them, if anyone is interested.
There were other games produced for Cyberworld QBorgs, but the assets for those games have not resurfaced in their entirety yet. I am also planning to make some tumblr posts going over the missing games and what we know about them. Here is the current list of Lost/Found QBorgs from the Lost Media Wiki.

Cyberchase Web Adventures Episode 4: Numberless Poddles
On April, 13, 2003, the fourth episode of the Cyberchase Web Adventures comic, "Numberless Poddles", was released. The original three-part web comic, "How It All Started" was also rebranded to become Cyberchase Web Adventures Episode 1-3.
This comic was made in the style of the "How it All Started" webcomic, as it was constructed with backgrounds taken from the original "Poddleville Case" pilot. The creators then added drawings on top of these frames. It is known for being a bit more off-the-rails than the "How It All Started" episodes due to some of the backgrounds and characters drawings not fitting together very well. This includes panels that show the stolen Poddle Eggs from the pilot, even though they have nothing to do with this story.
I just want to make it clear that, as far as I can tell, these are the original assets in their original intended placement. I had to re-assemble the panels due to certain assets being spread across multiple archives. However, I did not change anything.
I previously shared pages of this comic on a post that discussed The Hacker's most humiliating defeat. However, this time, I am going to post the whole thing, with the dialogue transcribed.
This comic was originally released for free on the pbskids.org website. It is no longer available, and it was actually fairly difficult to find backups of the images. I am only posting this for the purpose of archiving the content for fans. The only copyright visible is the general website copyright to the Educational Broadcasting Corporation. No specific people were credited for writing, illustrating, or otherwise creating the comic.
As with the three "How It All Started" webcomics, this comic was designed with some simple animations. I cannot reproduce the animations here. However, I have an item on Blue Maxima;a Flashpoint Archive project that reproduces them. That is the place to go for the best possible experience.
Here we go.
Tumblr media
Narration: It's morning in happy Poddleville but it won't be happy for long!
Tumblr media
Narration: Someone took the Poddles numbers away - and the cheerful world of the Poddles has ground to a complete halt! Without knowing their number no poddle knows what to do!
Tumblr media
Narration: Of course - Hacker was behind it. But that meant Buzz and Delete also, er, helped.
The Hacker: Perfect, perfect! Without numbers, the Poddles don't have a - Ha! -- clue who they are.
Delete: Yeah, boss - neither do we!
Tumblr media
The Hacker: But did you hide the Poddleville records somwhere very safe? So we can get them and I can tell each and every Poddle their number, and what they do - and rule this world!
Delete: Yes but-
Buzz: We forgot where, boss!
Narration: Hacker's plan is stopped for now - until he finds those records!
Tumblr media
The Hacker: Do not worry, my little numberless Poddles. I will tell each and every one of you what number you are!
Narration: The Poddles have no choice -- but to follow Hacker if he can give them their numbers back!
Tumblr media
Motherboard: Hacker has taken the numbers away from the Poddles! And he made them forget everything!
Digit: You gotta help the kids find the Poddleville records! So -- what are you waiting for? If you and the kids find the Poddleville records first, you can stop Hacker from ruling Poddleville!
Tumblr media
The Hacker: Well?
Buzz: Um, we haven't exactly found the records yet boss. But I remember we used one of the Poddles Word Machines to give us a clue.
Narration: Digit overhears Buzz! And now it's a race to the Poddleville Word Machine!
Tumblr media
Poddleville Police Officer: Yes, that Buzz and Delete did use our Word Machine
Nezzie: Can you help us find Buzz's clue word
Narration: Press the red button to make letters appear in the white space. Press the blue button when a word is made.
Editor's Note: This very simple puzzle allows us to change the first letter of a 5-letter word. The remaining four letters, which we cannot change, are: "L", "I", "M", and "B". The red button changes the first letter. We start with a "W". Then, we get an "S". Next comes an "F". Then comes a "C". Next comes a "P". Then comes a "D". Then comes a "B". Then the game breaks and fails to load another image. I have all of content, so this is a bug. We know the correct letter is "C", as it is the only one that forms a word, "CLIMB". There's nothing stopping us from clicking the arrow and skipping this puzzle entirely, though.
Tumblr media
Inez: Yes! The clue word is climb but climb where?
Jackie: Um maybe Mount Poddle?!
Narration: The records must be hidden somewhere on top of Mount Poddle! But how will they get there?
Tumblr media
Matt: Oh no! Without their numbers the Poddles don't know how to run the cable car!
Jackie: Can you help us?!
Narration: The cable car machine can take the kids to the top of Poddleville Mountain - if the Poddles can get it working!
Tumblr media
Narration: Poddle Weigh-in
Narration: For the Poddles to get the Cybersquad up to the mountain, they need to know their numbers -- and you can help!
Editor's Note: And now, we play a game of "Poddle Weigh-in". A modernized version of this game, which removes the original storyline, is still on the website.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Narration: Poddle Weigh-in
Narration: Remember: Poddles all need numbers, but their numbers don't have to do with how big or small their bodies are. You can't judge a Poddle by it's cover!
Tumblr media
Editor's Note: Don't trust your memory of a given Poddle from the pilot. This one is clearly the mayor, who is number "1" in the pilot. However, this Poddle is showing as a number "8" in this game.
Tumblr media
Narration: Meanwhile Hacker finds another way up Mount Poddle!
The Hacker: Now tell me again slowly why did you two hide the records all the way up there!?
Tumblr media
Narration: Are the numbers of each Poddle locked inside the Poddleville Vault?
Digit: Yoiks! Are the records in there?
Jackie: And if they are how will we get in?
Inez: We can figure it out - with the help of the Poddles from the cable car! Come on!
Tumblr media
The Hacker: Oh good, those annoying kids will figure out how to get in - and then we will snatch the record book!
Buzz: Yeah - now I remember, boss. This is where we hid the records!
Narration: Hacker, Buzz and Delete wait to trick the kids!
Tumblr media
Narration: Click on one of the Poddles to go in the red square! Each correct Poddle is part of the combination. Get all four, and the kids are in the vault!
Narration: Hey - you can do this! Put the right Poddle in the red square!
Editor's Note: And now, we solve four simple math equations to unlock the vault. Or we can use the arrow to skip the minigame entirely.
Question #1: _ + 4 = 9
Answer: The Poddle with the number 5.
Tumblr media
Question #2: 8 x _ = 16
Answer: 2
Tumblr media
Question #3: 9 - _ = 0
Answer: 9
Tumblr media
Question #4: _ - 3 = 1
Answer: 4
Tumblr media
Narration: The kids have the Poddle numbers - if they can get past Hacker!
Jackie: We got it! The book with every Poddle's number!
Matt: Uh-oh! looks like we just have to get past Hacker!
Tumblr media
Digit: Try this on for size, Hacker.
The Hacker: Help! Someone turned the lights out!
Jackie: Now they look much better!
Delete: I'm scared!
Tumblr media
Narration: Locked in the vault, Hacker and his pals will have lots of time to chill before they hatch their next evil plan.
Jackie: This should keep them busy for awhile.
Inez: Let's go give the Poddles back their numbers!
Matt: And we couldn't have done it - without you!
Tumblr media
Narration: Looks like Hacker will have to do some real thinking to get out of this one!
The Hacker: Well, this lock can't be too difficult, just have to put - um -- the right numbers in. I mean, how hard can it be?
Tumblr media
Digit: He didn't win this time!
Motherboard: Thank you - all of you - for stopping Hacker.
Jackie: And Hacke will never win because -
Matt: We've got his number - and it's a zero!
And so, that is the end of this comic.
Now, what did I think of it? It is bizarre. I know the "How it All Started" comics were a little weird, and they didn't always integrate their characters with their backgrounds. However, this is on a whole different level.
You have grainy footage of the pilot episode with non-grainy stickers of the children and Digit on top of it.
You have a shot showing Matt, Jackie, and Inez as they appeared in the pilot with Digit added as a sticker, since we wasn't in the pilot.
You have those stolen Poddle eggs in a few shots, even thought they have nothing to do with the story.
You have The Hacker's infamous double chin, where they put their drawing of Hacker's face on top of his face, as he appeared in the screenshot of the pilot that they are using as the background. They replaced part of his chin from the background with what looks like an electrical cable.
Inez still has her purple star, because they reused the assets from the "Meet the Cybersquad" character bios.
You have The Hacker, Buzz, and Delete in their "giant mode", where The Hacker is about half the size of Mount Poddle, and Delete is towing him up the mountain.
They followed this up with the smallest Hacker ever, peeking out from behind a bush.
They added mini-games, but then, with the exception of "Poddle weigh-in, you can just skip them. With "How It All Started", you did have to beat all of the minigames to move forward.
You have The Hacker's most humiliating defeat, where the kids and Digit stop him with giant Happy Birthday hats.
The kids lock The Hacker, Buzz, and Delete in the Poddleville Vault and leave him to die, which is fucking cold. They know this man needs regular recharges, and they know that Buzz and Delete are too dumb to solve the problem. This feels like an AU where the kids permanently stopped The Hacker
You have Motherboard's congratulation scene with her photo-shopped onto a poorly-drawn flat screen television. The Poddles are running away in terror. This is because the scene that they took from the pilot to use as the background is from when the Mayor of Poddleville is trying to maintain calm, but the tent is collapsing.
10/10. It's perfect. I wouldn't change a damn thing.
