Before leaving Livingstone towards Botswana I gave my bike a little maintenance. Checking the chain length unveiled that the chain already stretched above 1%. After about 7.500km it was necessary to put on my third and last chain. Did the work routine in the hostel, but didn't go for a test ride after...not good! The next morning when we all started cycling towards the border, I realized instantly that my drive train had some serious issues...the new chain jumped over the old cassette - damn, seems like I already waited too long with the chain swap and the old stretched chain has already damaged the sprockets. Two options to solve this issue: 1.) Revert to the old chain and accept that the expensive and in these countries not available Ultegra chain rings will also wear out pretty quick. 2.) Leave the new chain on and change to a new cassette. I decided for option 2.) with the only trade off, that 11 speed cassettes are not available in the Zambian market... I was carrying the first five sprockets - which are the most used - as a replacement. In order to do the work I just needed to find a workshop equipped with a chain whip. Asking around in Livingstone, it seems like there are no proper bike shops and people pointed me to the Maramba market. The market was one of these pretty typical African markets where people would sell everything possible. To my surprise I instantly found lots of little scrap bike "shops". After asking around a bit, a guy said "Sure, I think I know what you need! Wait a moment..." He came back and handed me that chain whip tool that I necessary needed. I will remember Zambia for its outstanding friendly people and as the charcoal cooking land. Along the roads there are plenty of charcoal sacks ready to be sold. Many people create the charcoal as tiny businesses in their private gardens...you can see and smell lots of small smoking earthen mounds in which the charcoal is slowly fired and thus produced. As I've send my gasoline stove back home already in Uganda and supplies are more sparse now, I've bought a self-made Zambian mini charcoal stove and a cooking pot on the side of the road...together with some charcoal. Somewhere in rural Zambia we (@velosophics, @locosciclos, @lusteiner) got invited to camp in a school...people are so welcoming and nice everywhere! In the morning at about half past six, the pupils started arriving at the school. Visited several Buffalo Bike shops across Zambia together with the @locosciclos. Those shops provide complete bikes, parts and maintenance for the Buffalo Bikes. They're also great stops for touring cyclists riding on 26" wheels and looking for puncture proof tires...the special Kenda Buffalo tire is, cheap, puncture proof and long lasting. The staff we talked to was always very passionate and knowledgeable about the Buffalo Bike and even the different processes like bike distribution to schools and other programs...the @locosciclos took their time for in depth interviews and video clips for their WBR fundraising project. Super interesting to see the evolution from the old to the new shops... Planning my further route through Botswana and Namibia I decided to get a rear carrier for my bike in Lusaka. I expect long stretches of nothingness in these countries which makes it necessary to carry way more water and food than I was able to carry so far. Finding a robust but lightweight carrier that fits my bike turned out to be a challenge. All the bike shops I checked were selling super heavy solid racks that weren't adjustable and wouldn't fit my bike. Dennis from the Buffalo bikes team introduced me to John who is running a second hand scrap bike workshop. He tried everything possible to bend the super solid carrier from the Buffalo Charger bike to fit my bike in a nightly workshop action...a few hours later two carriers were broken and none mounted on my bike... it simply wouldn't match. John still wanted to help and called Ben, a guy running a road side bike workshop. Then the magic happened... Ben: "Sure man, I have an adjustable lightweight aluminium carrier lying around here...tell him to pass by tomorrow morning!" Visited the World Bicycle Relief / Buffalo Bicycle headquarters in Lusaka with the Locosciclos at the end of February. Definitely a highlight to finally meet the team who is doing such a great job assembling the buffalo bikes on sight and distributing them to ones in need. This is a place I have always wanted to visit since I fundraised Buffalo bikes during my bike trip through Latin America back in 2012/2013. The Locos are active fundraisers and were stoked to be on site. It was a great coincidence to meet Dave the CEO together with Jay the marketing director who were just around from Chicago. Bryan the Country Director and Ceasar the Operations Manager gave us a lot of interesting insights about the WBR work. Spent a full day riding from bike shop to bike shop trying to find spares for the bikes. We highly appreciated that we were invited to use the Buffalo Bike workshop in order to fix and maintain our bikes. Dennis from the Buffalo team and I invested lots of time to put the bikes of the Locos Ciclos back in a top condition.
