Omg hiii heyy thank you for asking after my sweet man Daeris ❤️ Sorry i had to organise my thoughts a bit because it's like word soup in my brain fr if i said everything I'd be here for waaay too long,,,

but yeah to not ramble too long i made a paladin dark urge and wanted to see what'd happen next while putting my guy THROUGH it. and boy is it working overtime. The story is really writing itself which is pretty neat.

This is Daeris, my half-drow Paladin!! Somewhere between the most gentle and giving soul you'll come across to a fault. He will do anything and everything for you, for it's all he knows (both pre start of game and after a few days of collecting his thoughts).

Upon awakening with no memories and a distant bloodlust, he swore an oath of Vengeance for those broken and murdered individuals he saw on the Nautiloid. He swore his oath to destroy those responsible.

Despite the lack of memories, The gaze of Ilmater is piercing as the god's teachings are pretty much scorched into Daeris' mind. Where did they come from? He's not sure, but this code is holding him together at his core. To lend aid wherever he can, to take upon the suffering of others, to place all others’ safety above his own, and find mercy for others in his heart is all but second nature as he feels watched by higher forces.

Something about the relatively normal-giving ideals of the church of Ilmater clashing with the violent desires of the oath of vengeance to create a destructive martyr, someone willing to sacrifice everything, his life and personhood included, to meet the needs of others and remove their suffering to the best of his abilities. He may not be much of a healer, but he can be a fighter, your sword to destroy those who perpetuate the suffering.

He stalked the Nautiloid completely beside himself, as he takes in the pain, trauma and grotesque scenes before him (accidentally turning someone into a mindflayer will stay with him teehee, but at least for this his god showed forgiveness), while also arousing his own bloodlust.

So he walks a tightrope: between his faith and his bloodlust.

Both seemingly instinctual, his devotion to Ilmater being a sign of years of worship (most definitely his foster parents’ doing, not that he remembers them), and his bloodlust stirring within him at the sight of viscera. His only resolve is to try and find the middle ground.

Once upon a time, in the mass of long lost memories, he swore an oath of devotion for everyone that couldn't fight for themselves in his city. The preservation of life and the protection of others being the core of his morals. His concept of mercy and forgiveness with more leeway, more space in his heart to offer himself to every person he comes across.

However now he fights for the blazing memory of all the suffering endured, to fight recklessly, until the job is done. To smite out the core, and hope that with the roots singed the suffering others share with him begins to lift.

but yeah sorry for the huge rambles there, I wrote so much (500+ words) and had to take so much out lmao (another like, 300)

He's not my main tav (i haven't managed to draw Kairius right yet) but he means so much to me

He's for a challenge run where I can only non-lethal people and have to try to talk my way out of as many situations as possible.

I'm writing so much lore for him in my mind and I have a fic idea for him and Astarion in the works :}

He's a Zariel tiefling, oath of the ancients paladin, and a folk hero (though i may start my file over and make him a soldier for lore reasons... I'm not that far in with him i COULD)!

So. My dear mutual @thedragonagelesbian has proven how incredibly nice it can be to take a Dragon Age OC that already has at least one preexisting brain worm and create them in BG3, so I had the impulse to follow in the example set by Cyrus Hawke. Everyone, meet High Harper Imerati "one part religious trauma, one part martyr complex, and one part survivor's guilt" Surana. She was born around 1464 DR. As a young orphan in Neverwinter, her powers as a sorceress manifested when she was 4, and she was taken in by a cult of Ao, and later brought to a small convent in proximity of Nesmé. Her first memories are from that convent, and she never knew much about the world outside except from books. The cult tought her that magic was an abomination and that the only way those who wield it could redeem themselves is in serving the faith of Ao. When the War of the Silver Marches broke out in 1484 DR, she was rescued by a Harper commander as the convent was overrun, and she quickly grew fond of the organization, joining officially but a month later. Participating in several battles around the Silver Marches, she and her closest friend found themselves surrounded during an ambush by Zhentarim mercenaries in 1486 DR. He offered to sacrifice himself so that she could escape. Throwing herself fully into the motto "help without hesitation and ask nothing in return", she quickly became a legend amongst the people of the northern Sword Coast, always being ready to take on even the most difficult tasks, no matter the risk to herself. In 1490 DR, she was inducted into the secretive ranks of the High Harpers as the inofficial commander of the Harpers of the North. In 1492 DR, she was abducted by the Mind Flayer vessel we all know well by now.

the only thing i love more than a paladin (and i love paladins a LOT) is a paladin constantly struggling with their nature-- daeris seems like an incredible character!!! the all-consuming nature of the oath, blazing with fury & justice & ILMATER MY BELOVED. also yes i can definitely see him & cyrus trying to out-martyr each other opiajsdfasf and if you want to share i'd be soooo curious to here more about the planned bard multiclass? esp with what happened w alfira...

Ok so sin #1 - Until i got highkey invested in Cyrus i didnt really get paladins- I've definitely not enjoyed playing them before in dnd, so its been soooooo much fun trying to explore the implications in bg3! SO with me not getting the paladin thing, i was thinking of a bard multiclass more for the narrative potential- someone growing beyond their oath and being ok with it. Something something, the fighter becomes a supporter and realises they are more than a knight in shining armour. (Not that Daeris sees himself as a knight per say but this was what I was building off!!)

ANYWAY. for Daeris this is super on the tables, especially after Alfira!!! if its ok its time for MEGA rambles but the situation made me feel things.

Daeris lets Alfira join camp happily, knowing he cannot shepherd all the tieflings to Baldur's Gate, but this sweet girl who bared her heart and made it into song, while sharing a new skill with Daeris but a day earlier? he could make room for one more.

only hours later she's dead on the floor, pooling with blood, in a ritualistic killing of pure brutality, and his hands are stained with her blood. His only memory he could conjure up being how scared she was.

He washes his hands first,scrubbing his skin raw trying to think of how this happened. He barely sleeps, her fear haunting him, but that's not the only thing. His oath, holding fast despite the depravity, but Ilmater's prayers have gone quiet. There is no guidance, with his oath feeling hollow as it still holds. She wasn't who he was hunting, she wasn't the face of his vengeance. So why does the divine still course through?

He confesses to the killing, before swiftly making an effort to give her a send off, a burial with the hopes that any of his divine powers will help her journey. The scrutiny of his companions only making his holy oath feel more fraudulent.

Daeris finally remembers the song Alfira was writing, in memory of Lihala. He remembers how the spare lute played effortlessly in his hands, despite having no recollection of ever holding a lute before. He thinks it to be a coincidence, but then a stray thought... why not, alongside a burial, give the charming young bard a proper bardic remembrance through song? It's the least she deserves. Anything to replace the fear she felt as the lasting memory in his head.

And so, with his faith in his oath beginning to wobble and a lute, Daeris begins to write a song, forcing himself to remember her as purely as he can. to his surprise, it comes as easily as the urge to kill, and feels just as holy as suffering should.
