If the ask games is still open: A sibling swap in where Touya, Fuyumi and Natsuo are all Iidas (and thus Tenya's older siblings), while Tensai is Shouto's only sibling.

Oh wow this produced such healthier family dynamics I'm sure-

1- Tensei is, of course, Rei and Enji's pride and joy. When he's born, Rei immediately tries for another but it's too soon for her body, and she miscarries. Tensei's quirk isn't quite as strong as Enji hoped for, but he's worried about Rei being able to carry any child at all again -what if the last baby had been "too hot" for her cold body, he really should have gotten more information on genetics, pregnancy, and quirks before he decided to do a mini eugenics experiment but you live and learn ig- so he trains Tensei carefully. Tensei thinks being a hero is Cool™ and is more obedient to his parents than Touya would be.

2- still, over the years, Enji begins to think it still won't be enough. Perhaps, with how good Tensei is using support gear to keep up his health, with how well he works with others, he'll lead the Endeavor agency and do far better than his father, break his records cases. But... He won't surpass All Might. And Rei always wanted more children, and she's 33 this year and after 35 isn't it supposed to be riskier... Why not try again? And then Shoto is born the week Tensei gets into UA, and he's perfect.

3- Meanwhile, the Iidas have always had big families (if you're cynical: gives them a better chance of having as least one in the generation with an engine quirk to keep the brand going. If you're less cynical: they're rich enough to care for as many children as they want and since they remember childhoods with siblings and cousins, they want the same for their kids.) Touya ("Mercury") has engines on his ankles, Fuyumi ("Nike") on her shoulder blades, Natsuo didn't inherit the engine quirk, and Tenya of course has his calves.

Now... You know how Dabi gets carsick when Spinner drives? Great ok because now his body is the car. And he doesn't have brakes. So even here, his quirk and body do not get along.

4- Tensei adores his baby brother just as his parents do. He's so excited his second year when Shoto manifests his quirk. But that said, he's a busy kid. He's interning at his father's agency after school, but taking on more responsibility there. He leads a lot of people, and he's very good at it. When he graduates, he's the second in command. When he's twenty, he's practically in charge. His father is at home more, after all. He thinks nothing of it... Until he visits unannounced one day, and hears shouting from the training room, opens the door just in time to hear "he's already five" and have the scent of vomit hit his nose.

Enji's hand is raised to hit Rei, though it falls on seeing Tensei. His expression shifts, asks if something is the matter, an emergency. Tensei stares, jaw slack. It's quiet as the whole picture sinks in for everyone there. Then Shoto gags, and Tensei moves to go to him. "Trainings over." He declares. "I'll get him cleaned up, we'll talk after dinner."

"Tensei-"

"We'll talk after dinner, Endeavor."

5- Touya, to no one's surprise I'm sure, sucks at working in teams. Given that is Idaten's whole shtick, Fuyumi steps into a team leader role instead. But her quirk is far more limited than her brother's, really only lets her go up and down, so on the field Touya is playing the main character while Fuyumi organizes his backup dancers. She's too nice to admit if it bothers her, but she and her parents have quietly planned to have Tenya take over in her role if he has a knack for it, then inherit the agency, because even Fuyumi doesn't have the patience to want to babysit her older brother forever. They hope that Touya's attitude tempers out by then.

Instead what happens is Stain attacks Mercury who frequently goes off on his own. He, improbably, survives. In the hospital, he calls Tenya to talk to him alone. He is not there to give Tenya his hero name, in fact, it's the opposite:

Touya: "don't you dare take my hero name, I know you pick them next week, and Mom and Dad are idiots if they think I'm retiring just because they tell me to."

Tenya looks at the scope of the injuries. But he looks up to his siblings and is relieved to not have that pressure on him, so he agrees.

Touya: "great, now even more important: don't you even think about taking my revenge. I'm going to be the one to kill Stain, and if you take that from me I'll kill you too, and then Fuyumi will kill me and die of a broken heart, and Natsuo can't pass on engine. Do you get what I'm saying?"

Tenya: "... That continuing the cycle of violence and revenge would destroy our family and ourselves, instead of bringing justice?"

Touya: "oh my god no I don't care about that. Just know that if you even look in Stain's direction before I put his pieces in a body bag, you're going to be in there with him."

Tenya agrees to not go after Stain... Though he does think of backup plans.

Secret baby chapter 4

(I broke my laptop so I'm posting this from mobile and cant hide anything under a cut for a short post, sorry.)

“How did it go?” Fuyumi is waiting for him when she gets home, nearly pouncing on him before the door is fully shut. Touya hesitates and he almost tells her the truth. That he’s taking his baby and running as far as he can, that he's going to build a new life, a safe life. But the more people he tells, the more likely Enji will find out. No. It's safer, for everyone, because if Enji suspects that Fuyumi knows anything he'll hurt her, if he just goes. He’s been planning on running away for a long time, it's time he actually did it. For his safety and his baby’s.

“We decided it was best to abort.” He squares his shoulders and looks her in the eye. The same lie passing his lips for the second time. He wishes it was easier this time.That the thought of abortion didn't make his stomach roll and his eyes water. He already loves this child more than anything. The lie is bitter, but the risk of his child coming to harm because he didn't lie is enough to send panic sparking like fire in his heart. 

“Do you want me to come with?” Fuyumi asks and she, well she sounds half relieved and not at all surprised. Touya knows why. Abortion would be the ‘smart’ thing to do right now. 

He doesn't have an alpha to help him.

He’s a young omega alone ,with a history of bad parenting and anger issues in his family, about to become a pregnant runaway.

Nothing about this is smart, He doesn't care. He’s going to try his damndest to make this work.

“I don’t want to do it alone and I can’t ask the father.” He nods, because while it would be easier to tell her no, he doesn't want her coming, it would also be too far out of character. She'd suspect something was up.

“I thought you both made the decision is he really going to leave you to do this alone?” Fuyumi sits on the edge of his bed, frowning. She's confused… but there's a hint of anger there too, if his alpha had abandoned him to abort their baby alone. Touya isn’t allowed to make nests so he’d made do with burrowing under his comforter. From what he’s heard a nest is something omega’s make for comfort and stress relief. Most omega’s make one when their instincts tell them they are safe enough. Touya’s never seen Rei have one either. He is going to have to learn for his baby. Maybe there's a library, with those self help books?

“We did. Enji got brought up and he defended him. I don’t want anything to do with him anymore. It was… it was my choice." His voice breaks there, and he doesn't bother trying to hide it.Fuyumi says nothing when he starts crying while cradling his stomach, but her hand rests on his shoulder, and he takes the comfort she offers gratefully. 

She ends up accompanying him to a clinic the next day. He’s told that he’s 4 months along and already has the start of a bump.

He’s got maybe a month before he can’t hide it anymore. He doesn't want to think about what Rei or Enji will say if they notice.

“Has anyone gone over your options with you?” His nurse asks him as she shows him into a private room.

“Kind of and I k-know, that this is dumb,increadibly dumb, but I want to keep them.” He barely gets the words out to the nurse but he does. They sound too quiet. Barely audible. 

“It’s not dumb-” she starts talking in a voice as soft as Touya was using.

“I can’t stay at home and have them, and the father, he thinks I’m getting an abortion.” Touya can’t bring himself to look at the nurse. Staring hard at the floor and trying not to remember the look on Hawks face. 

What if Hawks was here with him instead? He would probably let him hold his hand. Pump out sothing alpha hormones to calm Touya’s fear, like he did after a nightmare. If he wanted to be here at all. If Touya had admitted what he wanted, if Hawks hadn’t told Enji in excitement and gotten him killed or worse at home.

He can’t face Hawks’s anger if he goes back and comes clean. It does no good to wish for something else; he can’t risk his baby now.

“You’ve got a couple weeks until you start showing. We can help you. Does the young lady that came with you know that you're keeping your baby?” The Nurse started looking through some papers on the wall and putting them into a folder. She phrases it like Touya can have anything he wants. Says he’s keeping the baby just because he said he wanted to.

They talk some more about Touya’s options. Adoption is brought up and Touya hesitates but it's not what he truly wants. He turns adoption down and lets himself start believing he can keep his baby. The clinic manages to fit him in for an ultrasound same day and gives him the news that he’s having a baby girl.

Touya cries at the sight of her. He already loves her.

He’s still crying when he meets Fuyumi back out in the waiting room.

“Are you going to be okay,Touya?” she rubs his back.

 Later she helps him dye his hair black.

“I need a change, to keep my mind off her” is what Touya tells her. It’s the first step in his plan to get as far away as he can.

“Her? You got to find out the gender first?” Fuyumi gives Touya a concerned look.

They are alone again. Natsou getting a librarian's help today in filling out applications for highschools far enough away that he has to board.

Rei hasn’t been in the same room as him except for tense ‘family’ dinners since she had found the tests. Touya had tried to pull her aside for a moment when he came back from the clinic and told her that it was taken care of. She hadn’t responded and Touya hadn’t mentioned it again. He hadn’t spoken to her again.

“Yeah, I was far enough along, 4 months so I would have started showing soon. I asked for an ultrasound so I knew first.” He gives his twin a tiny smile. He wishes he could take his sibling’s with him. Raise his baby with free babysitting and her aunts and uncles doting on her every possible minute. Instead he’s dying his hair black while Enji is gone on business. By the time Enji is supposed to be home he’s going to be gone.

Hair dyed and looking nothing like the Touya Todoroki his father last saw,with his new hair and several new piercings and some baby weight, He gets started on finding an apartment close to the clinic.

He could choose one further but he doesn't want to risk finding a different nurse. Or a clinic as willing to hide him as this one has been. His father's influence can spread far and then nowhere will be safe.

He finds a cheap one with a landlord that doesn't ask too many questions.It takes almost a week and he’s anxious about Enji coming home early the entire time.He lies on the application about everything, starting with his name. The landlord must not have ever checked it over because a week later he’s meeting the building manager in person and being given a set of keys.

He buys small things with enji’s credit card and has them sent to the apartment instead of the house. Rei avoids him and he can’t help but be thankful. She would be able to smell the pregnancy and unlike Fuyumi he wouldn't be able to just brush it off as leftover hormones still, almost a full month later.

“You're still getting sick, Touya” Natsou points out one night. He’s rubbing Touya’s back as he gasps in air over the toilet.

“It’s okay Natsou. I promise I'm okay.” He stands up and flushes the mess . rinsing his mouth out for what feels like the 50th time that day.

“You’d tell me if you were sick right? Like sicker than normal?”

“It’s an omega thing Nat, I’m not sick.” he wraps Natsou in a hug. His younger alpha brother quickly outgrowing him doesn't bother him for once.Fuck. his brother thinks he’s dying and he can't reassure him. Can’t risk his baby girl like that. He cries into Natsou’s shoulder and excuses it as his hormones are out of whack.

Everyone piles into his room that night and sleeps on Touya’s bed. It’s his last night at home and he’s so scared that his scent breaks through his blockers. It happens often enough that the Todoroki siblings take it as a sign that they need to be extra close with Touya. He lays awake most of the night trying to control his breathing and watching over his younger siblings for the last time. He truly doesn't want to leave them with enji but he doesn't have a choice if he doesn't want to lose the baby girl growing inside him to a beating or “training”.

The next morning he skips school for the last time and goes home to grab the bag he’s been adding to for years.

Rei is home of course but she stays in her room. She’s never come out to yell at Touya about skipping school.Touya doesn't bother to seek her out now to say goodbye.

He leaves his house key and factory reset cell phone on the table and walks out for the last time. 

He is never coming back. It’s the hardest thing he’s ever done when he leaves but he does.

He’s ready to leave,or as ready as He’s ever going to be. He can’t hide his baby bump much longer.

The morning he moves into his apartment Touya buys himself a bed and the baby a crib. He almost tries to shove up the apartment stairs himself despite being 5 months pregnant now.

“Wait! Where’s your alpha? Can’t you wait until he gets home to get these up the stairs?”

“Don’t have one.” Tou-Dabi mumbles. Dabi is the name on the apartment lease and what he’s been telling everyone to call him. Dabi with no family name and no family.

“Dabi right? What about friends? There's no way I'm letting a pregnant omega carry stuff up by themselves.” The movers looked shocked that he would have them leave the furniture for him to move himself.

“Unless you two want to carry it up for me i'm just going to have to suck it up and do it myself.” Dabi glares at them. Dabi goes to grab a corner of a box and move it up the stairs himself. 5 month baby belly be damend. Its not like anyone is around to help him, he has to do this himself or it won’t get done.

“Penguin, get over here and help me take this upstairs and put it together. Law will understand and I'll tell him when we get back.” The two movers make quick and easy work out of setting the beds up for Dabi. They not only brought it up for Dabi but had put the beds together for him too. Shachi declines payment for the help and tells Dabi to remember to ask for help.The apartment is finally ready to be home.

My BNHA villain OCs: Inko’s sidekick

Apparently by “tomorrow” I meant a week later, and by two OCs I meant "four, but each gets a separate post because jeeeezus this’d be too long otherwise”.

Inko has her own journey in Libra, going from homeless single mom to respected villain. Due to how the timeline works out, I needed to create some OCs for her to interact with, since none of the other canon characters’ histories line up with AU!Inko’s in the way I needed them to.

Also, the point of Inko’s character is that she can’t survive on her own. She’s a villain, yes, she breaks the law, and as she grows into her role she even knowingly hurts people. But she’s unusual among villains in that she doesn’t pretend to be strong by herself—her real strength is in the many connections she makes. Inko becomes the surrogate mom to a generation of young villains. A key part of her story is found family.

Hence her organization’s name: the Underground Family.

Today’s character: Kangen Kutsurogi

You can tell this one's important because she has a proper name!

Kangen's role: Inko needed a companion, someone she can interact with through her journey. I wanted them to be younger than her, so Inko is still definitely The Adult in the relationship, but old enough to babysit Izuku, old enough to spend money without raising too many questions, old enough to have political opinions, and old enough to know how to bullshit their way through some things.

(Fun fact: this role was originally going to be Dabi's, but he’s just too young at this point—11 at most—to credibly do some of the things I’d need his character to do. Don’t worry, he still joins Inko's family, just at a later date.)

I also wanted someone to provide an alternative kind of character development. Inko is already a mother, already carrying responsibility, already intensely compromised, and her character growth is about things more grounded than destiny and bigger than personal vengeance. Kangen, however, wants more shonen-esque things: she wants to solve mysteries, she wants to make herself into something.

And boy howdy, does Kangen have a mystery to solve. Because her Quirk isn't hers. And, possibly, neither is her name. This is BNHA, you can probably guess how she has a Quirk that isn’t hers...

Kangen wants to solve the mystery of herself, Inko wants to take care of the people she cares about. All For One can either be the antagonist in Kangen's personal story or he can be the monster who generously tolerates the small fry swimming around him. He cannot be both. Kangen's story is that she must learn to temper her wants and grow around her own scars—like Inko already is.

If Kangen pursues the things she thinks she wants, she'll destroy the things she actually values. (Sometimes, you have to let go of your personal dream narrative to realize the one you've actually been living this whole time.)

Kangen's Quirk: Nonthreatening.

Kangen's Quirk prevents anyone from seeing her as a threat. No matter how hostile or violent Kangen acts towards someone, she can never provoke them. They will never panic, get angry, or get stressed about her. Confrontations become friendly chats and deadly fights become laid-back play-fights.

Nonthreatening allows Kangen to challenge people who are normally very dangerous and walk away without few-to-no repercussions. She’s also used it to steal stuff right in front of the owner's eyes. (At most, they'll sigh exasperatedly and get around to filing an insurance claim. Chasing her or calling the police would mean they’re worried or angry, and that’s not possible with her.) Or brazenly assault people in broad daylight and walk away without anyone trying to stop her. (It is not a stealth Quirk; people can see and remember her normally, they just can't be fucked to pursue/confront her while she's present.)

The exact mechanics of Kangen's Quirk are the mystery, though. Is it an always-on field affecting everyone around her? Can it be suppressed with concentration? Or is it the reverse, and takes work to keep activated? Is she the sole focus, or can she prevent anyone from provoking anybody? Does it work on robots? Can a recording of her have the same effect?

The little answers are ever-changing. The big answer is that her Quirk is very, very old: one of the first-generation Quirks from 200 years ago. Its original user was taken by the government, and used in “Project Kangen”, a series of experiments in "pacifying" large crowds, or potentially even entire populations. Her Quirk is (sometimes) strong because it's actually many Quirks—one of the first amalgamate Quirks forged by All For One—but it's unstable because, well, he was pretty young himself back then, and not nearly as skilled with his own Quirk as he is now.

And Kangen Kutsurogi’s name? Given to whoever the Quirk subject of Project Kangen is.

Kangen's name: It's literally the Japanese phrase "kangen", which according to at least one Japanese dictionary means "leniency and severity", making her name ~meaningful~ by Horikoshi standards. Kutsurogi means something like "comfort" or "relaxing".

Her villain name is Peacemaker, and yes she is going to carry a Colt Peacemaker revolver, because irony.

Kangen's backstory: The desirability of certain Quirks means human trafficking is a big problem in this AU, and Kangen got shuffled all over the place as villain groups tried to use her Quirk for various purposes (anything from petty crime in broad daylight to negotiation to infiltration).

Eventually, All For One decides that the Project Kangen Quirk is his creation and therefore belongs in Japan, kidnapping her. Then, not having much use for her (AFO has far more potent telepathy Quirks under his command) he put her where he dumps all the Quirks he collects but doesn’t use.

That is, he gave her to the actual designated antagonist of my villain!Inko fic: a cult leader villain who worships All For One (and doesn’t realize he’s merely caretaker to All For One's human collection of salvaged Quirks). Kangen’s job there was mostly to suppress the more violent Quirk-users and help raise the younger kids.

In addition to highlighting the uglier side of Quirk society, Kangen also parallels Eri: used by villains for her Quirk, but escapes and runs into a genuinely good person (Inko). It sets up the conflict between AFO's cult and Inko's family in Libra, and (SPOILER) later, in Let the Heavens Fall, the conflict between Overhaul and Inko (who let me tell you is SUPER PISSED that this upstart new villain's first major step is "torturing a child for her Quirk").

kurogiri hcs

i just have a lot of kurogiri thoughts....

- in canon mostly because i really like the theory that he's an ex-ua student who used to be friendly with aizawa and yamada before his quirk pretty much failed him during a battle and instilled the thought of "never let someone chase an unachievable dream" in aizawa afterwards. he was in a vulnerable position during that time and afo, who seems to watch the ua tournaments and realized kurogiri's quirk had the potential to be incredibly useful to his organization, swooped in similar to how it was with shigaraki and with careful manipulation pretty much became in kurogiri's eyes his savior who helped him realize how horrible the hero society is and gave him a second chance at redemption via villainy. because of this he feels a strong sense of debt towards afo 

- since he hasnt seen what an ass afo is yet he'd do almost anything afo would ask of him without question.

- to add onto the above of being an ex-ua student thats also one of the reasons he constantly has his mist on. i personally believe he does have a normal human form underneath going off how 1-a pinned him down during the ua rescue center scene. having his mist contantly at the ready helps be more prepared for all the sudden unexpected situations villains can fall into as well as disguise him from both media attention and anyone who might recognize him (old friends-) given the fact he's considered legally dead.

- the only people aware of his well. origin story is afo and some of his trusted higher ups who assisted in readjusting kurogiri to their group and pushing him to further his quirk abilities to do what he can do now

- kurogiri never really thought of telling shigiraki about since to him that backstory doesn't matter as much as helping him grow as afo's heir and as kurogiri's adopted son

- the reason kurogiri got into bartending was because when he first joined and he and afo were trying to figure out when he;d fit best kurogiri just sort of realize afo tends to drink A Lot. with all his quirks, its hard for afo to be killed by more normal means like alcohol poisoning and some of them had the side effect of needing a Shit Ton before afo could really get drunk

- so kurogiri just ended up helping fix afo's drinks and over time it morphed into learning how to bartend

- his loyalty to afo s pretty much the only reason kurogiri originally started taking care of shigaraki. afo knew how loyal and steadfast to him and took advantage of it to give him the job of raising/babysitting shigaraki. tbh i don't think kurogiri was fond of shigaraki since the beginning and probably acted more like a butler/robotic towards him at first before the unrelenting Parental Instincts tm kicked in one day after almost a year of looking after him and suddenly realized "oh fuck this is my son"

- during the year of lowkey awkward parenting he was internally having a crisis since in my mind he never really ever thought of having kids during his time as a hero in training so suddenly having the responsibilty of looking after one you know nothing about and is already pretty grown vs wanting to please afo who trusted him enough with the task made him p conflicted during the time

- thankfully(?) afo was the most active in shigarakis life during the beginning years so kurogiri didn't have to have his crisis while being a single dad as well. as shigaraki got older afo just started to withdraw more when he thought shigaraki and kurogiri were getting along well enough and weren't about to fight/betray him any time soon

- if the lov ever decided to break their assosiation with afo, kurogiri would likely still go with lov to make sure shigaraki and crew stay safe and that none of them get too hurt. despite that, he'd still retain quiet loyalty to afo due to his blind faith in him and would probably keep him updated if asked, thinking of it as a "father knows best situation"

- for the lov to be able to have his Total Loyalty, really the only person who could sway him would be shigaraki himself. as much as he feels like he has a debt to afo, shigaraki has pretty much become his own son in kurogiri's eyes (which he likely wouldnt outright admit-) and anything he'd tell him about afo would pretty much be the only stories kurogiri couldn't bring himself to cast doubt onto

- honestly in general shigiraki is pretty much the only one besides afo that he's willing to listen and consider anything he says. everyone else he might listen to but internally there's a possibility hes not really listening depending on the topic. like above, sometimes he thinks he just knows better though he is willing to admit whenever he's wrong

- mild projecting but besides shigaraki his favorite that he won't outright say is his favorite is toga. besides yknow the murdering which tbh doesn;t really bother him, he pretty much sees her as a a+ daughter and is just "lmao your lost" at her family. the only thing he doesn't like about her is when she goes out of her way to aggravate shigaraki or when she starts killing people suddenly and it throws off lov's plan

- he takes great pride in looking nice and presentable and while he might be willing to wear more casual clothes in his rare free time, he refuses to wear clothes like those free tshirts you get at events or his pjs outside his room.

- lowkey passive agressive about s o m e people not wearing socks t o m u r a. or not wearing long enough pants like arent your fucking ankles cold?

- kurogiri does also enjoy being a gentleman to go along with his professional aesthetic since like. just cause youre a villain doesnt mean you gotta be a dick yknow? too many heroes do that anyways (@ endeavor then perish)

- can swear but unable to around children 

- (shigaraki once heard him say fuck when he thought he was alone and its haunted them both ever since. neither of them talk about it)

- he's a villain so like. he doesnt feel bad about killing people or watching them get killed. he was literally willing to murder 13, all might, and 1-a and only didn't because renforments arrived. during their first meeting with toga and dabi, his concern was less about shigaraki killing someone but the concept of shigaraki killing someone who could be useful to their cause. if shigaraki had weighed the options and told kurogiri "yeah im gonna kill them theyre useless", kurogiri wouldnt have seen anything wrong with not stepping in again when shigaraki does so. 

- the only people he would feel bad for killing would be very young children since they remind him too much of how shigaraki used to be. parents of said children have a 50/50 chance depending on how they act

- kurogiri does try to let shigaraki be a grownup tm since hes like. 21 and make his own decisions but he really does have a habit of babying him since hes seen all the stupid shit hes done and said since he was like 5-6 and it all flashes in front of his eys sometimes

- for all the members who Can drink legally hes memorized their usual drinks by now. some of them (magne, twice, spinner-) probably use this to look cooler to recruits but everyone else Knows

- purposely says things like “the pokemens" in front of the younger members to set their fight or flight reflexes off

- video games are basically the only thing he really keeps up to date with pop culture wise tbh. whenever someone pulls him into playing one with them, he just acts like an old man who doesnt understand how to use controllers and lets them win to be nice. if he wanted he Could Destroy Them

- kurogiri doesn't dad anyone who doesn't want a dad figure showing up. he'll still do things like make sure they're being as safe as a villain can be and act as a mediator but otherwise they won't get much witness much dading unless its directed towards someone else

Day 5: The Human Wreckage

In which revolutionaries Toga and Twice infiltrate a gala and borrow a Finance Minister. For the Revolution.

“I think you’ve had enough, pal.”

Those words, and the hand that accompanies them, begin to disperse the soft fog that’s done such a lovely job of smoothing out all the jagged edges of this life he leads. Twice reaches out a trembling hand, as if to call back the whispers and caresses of being pleasantly unaware. Even as he tries though, he can feel the other him stirring back to wakefulness, all manic energy and eager quips.

He tosses scratch he really don’t have to cover the tab he shouldn’t have opened.

He pushes himself back from the bar and stands up from the stool, looping steps and false bravado getting him across the lobby and up against a carved wooden column, where he waits for his Sister of the Revolution.

He giggles and covers his mouth, borrowed suit and stolen fedora itching like wrongness against his skin. Still, he’s supposed to be all class and social and smooth, and he might not know what those things are, exactly, but he knows they ain’t staples across your forehead or a shadow-self who likes to come out and play.

Nah, the bourgeois keep their shadows leashed, least in polite company.

Least that he’s seen.

He rolls his neck and peers over the miasma of smoke rising up from all the fat cat cigars and dainty ciggies that perch delicately in painted mouths and polished hands. He taps out one for himself, while he waits, even as he knows the tar won’t do anything to clear his head or help this loopiness that he wants to fall into.

It’s the smoking that gives him away, more than the drunkenness or the way he wears a suit like he’s never before been in one in his life. Nah, it’s the angle of the ciggie that does it. He’s no smooth boy, no well-schooled scion. The smoke hangs lazily from his lip in the world-weary way of busboys and bellhops and grifters the world over, fellas and skirts that learned from childhood how to smoke and drink and dream while their hands stayed busy on the work of the day, whether that was gutting fish on stinking docks or lifting wallets in crowds along the shops.

Inhale, exhale, think about the uselessness of it all. Look for a flash of red in the sea of easy marks and killer crooks. He closes his eyes, for just a minute, and that must be when he misses her.

The ciggie is pulled from his mouth and flipped in the air in a move that’s downright dangerous, at least in the small way that drinking from a chipped glass or slightly expired milk is. Sure, it won’t really hurt. But it’s still a dumb idea. A small revolt against sensibility.

Which, honestly, is a fair description of the half-grown dame who stole his smokes.

His eyes flicker open, pupils blown wide from the liquor in his blood and the smoke in his lungs. Toga looks him over and rolls her eyes, clearly seeing in an instant that her wayward comrade is just as useless at this as her. She knew they shouldn’t have been given this job, but then again...who else from the League could go? The others got faces that are either already known or are a bit too grotesque for the Mns. and Mdes. of this kinda shindig.

Twice in a fedora might be a bit rude, but Dabi would be downright horror-show. For her part, Toga’s been real professional and classy about the whole thing. She got into character as some cute little miss who hadn’t quite learned to be afraid of the Big Bad Wolf that is high society and the slippery-pawed bankers and busters were eating it up. Only hiccup was her mouth and the words that came out of it.

Still, least she wasn’t ready to be poured into a hack, unlike some people.

She gives Twice a distinctly un-ladylike elbow to the ribs. To his credit, he matters to mask his groan with a cough that don’t blow their cover too bad.

“Twice, buddy boy. You gotsta get it together. How exactly are you gonna be my driver if you can’t hardly walk, hmm?”

Twice tries to pat her shoulder but ends up petting her nose instead.

Well, not her nose, exactly, but at least the one she’d borrowed for the night.

“Don’t you worry, lil miss. Twice is on the job, see?”

He goes a floppy little salute, wrong hand and all.

“Honestly, how much did you drink anyway? Thought you were too down and out to afford a joint like this?”

“S-only had two drinks.”

Now it’s Toga’s turn to cover a low-class guffaw.

“Lightweight, huh? Whole time I been here, thinkin you were some practiced lush.”

She drags him across to a coffee cart and shoves some black heat into his hands.

“Drink up, ya boozehound. I’m two lash flutters and a flash of gams away from getting Mr. Handsy outta here and I need a driver to do it.”

Twice nods, almost solemnly, and dutifully starts chugging coffee, not even minding the way it scalds his throat and lips.

Well, that’s not exactly what she meant, but whatever.

The revolution ain’t going to wait for her to babysit a damn fool who should know better.

She gives him a last, lingering look and turns heel to return to the gala, false body, false name, and false invitation flashing under the gilded lights of the ballroom. The places neither of them had any right to go, least not according to the stiffs that ran things round here.

He takes another burning gulp and wills his mind to clear, even as the other voices start to sharpen and scramble his thoughts. He owes this to Toga. He owes it to the League. He won’t let his comrades down.

He heads grabs a fizzy water and gulps down the salt-trace seltzer in between cups o’ joe, every tick of the minute hand on the grand ol’ clock snatching away more of the lovely muteness he’d accidentally fallen into.

Toga must be tryna give him as long as possible to get himself together, cause she’s in the gala far longer than she needs. He supposes he’ll have to apologize later, his conduct being unbecoming of a revolutionary, and all. S’not fair that she has to prance and preen and pretend for all those phonies for longer, just cause he can’t keep his liquor and can’t keep his head.

This city is dark enough, the motives of the movers and shakers foggy enough, without him going and muddying things up. The League’s given him a family of sorts, made outta people the rest of society has cast aside cause they didn’t fit in the pretty little lies they wanted to tell themselves. Twice would die for them, he’d kill for them, surely, he could stay sober for them.

Too bad his mind isn’t always his own, and his teetotalling has the sad effect of making his slip-ups a bit more florid than they’d be if he was the sop Toga and the other’s figured he’d be.
