art for my fic Astra Inclinant, Sed non Obligant which is over! after over a year of work and thinking about it it's done, it's written.

The art is very specifically for very early on in the fic, I might do something for them near the end because things change

the fic itself takes place 2 weeks after the end of the world, and is about the three healers and their places in that. Where Artemy's been in it the longest time, Clara knows the most, and Daniil is lost for first act

it has 3 acts where act I is the least organised, act II has these guys get to be happy (SHOCKING) and act III is the downwards spiral towards the end, I was actually so mad at myself writing the last chapter bc I wanted them to be happy writing it lol

the fic is set in my own world, which will get explained throughout the writing, but the characters don't really know what's going on all the time, and it's fun to have a world that's a bit looser

This started about a year and a half ago when I was discussing this world with a few friends and started assigning, Artemy was pretty much decided from the start, but the other took me a while to really get them the right role in the story

Daniil being a reluctant caretaker to Clara is SUCH a good concept

like, him finding her slumped on some bench somewhere, looking miserable, and he makes some jab at her while he’s passing by.

but she doesn’t snap back, which is a bit strange. usually, she starts smarting off to him. but this time, she doesn’t.

so Daniil backpedals a bit to stand directly in front of her, bluntly asking what’s wrong with her. but she doesn’t even lift her head to look at him, so he does it for her- “it’s rude not to make eye contact with someone when you’re having a conversation.”

and that’s when he notices how hot her face is. which leads him to feel her forehead.

she’s burning up.

like that, the rivalry is gone because oh shit. even if it isn’t the Pest, with the state the Town is in, any sickness should cause concern.

Thank you for the Danko! I have a lot of soft headcanons for him, unsurprisingly... 

Headcanon A:  realistic

Okay, so I know I’ve talked about it a lot in JTB, but I love Daniil having been a little entomologist due to his beetle collection he mentions in Marble Nest. He starts taking a very analytical approach and what had once started as a simple curiosity ends up getting him into a scientific mindset from an early age. And then the ‘death jar’ part and pinning them starting to introduce him to death in detail (or drowning if he’s collecting other kinda bugs), something to fascinate him from an early age. I think eventually he shifted to the medical field and then thanatology, but that his entomology was a crucial introduction to science for him.

Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious

This man is ridiculously competitive, especially against children. Murky offhandedly mentions wanting to collect bugs together? Daniil is going to turn it into a competition of whoever can catch the most bugs (it ends with them both very dirty, Daniil wildly crawling through the grass trying to find beetles, but Murky always wins). Same goes for any kind of competition really: snowball fights, board games, hide and seek… He’s not letting himself get beaten by children (he always loses).

Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends

Not really the most heart-crushing thing about him, but I imagine he never had much of a social life, that he invested all of his energy into Thanatica because it really did mean everything to him. He got on well enough with some of the people there, he cared about them, and he could certainly turn on the charisma to play up the charm towards people and audiences in lectures. But he never really had any fulfilling relationships that he put the time and effort into, because he never had those things available to him when everything he was went into his work. It was difficult to take care of himself when he was fighting death.

Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.

It takes him some time, but he ends up being really good with kids, for he knows a lot of things and puts a lot of effort into holding their attention and making learning interesting. He doesn’t have the ability to interact with them naturally like Artemy does, but he works to understand how to talk to them. So when a school gets set up off their own backs, I imagine he teaches a lot of science there, being able to set up basic and fun experiments to get all the kids invested. And it fills that loss that he feels from no longer being able to give elaborate lectures, it becomes really fulfilling, because the kids are always invested and have questions.

let's see if i can find five canon moments

1. in classic, when sticky writes to him and tells him about the albino because he apparently promised daniil he wouldn't go out and look for it on his own. so daniil does it for him. (day 6 sidequest "the thing from the steppe") i really hope this sidequest makes its way into the bachelor route of pathologic 2, it's my favorite sidequest of his.

Teensy: Uncle Bachelor... Daniil: Do not cry, pumpkin. It's all right.

2. i mentioned this earlier, but two crying children at the military headquarters will ask daniil for help in finding their father, who was taken by mutineering soldiers to be shot in the steppe. and he does. (day 11 sidequest "the execution")

Grace: My head is splitting... Daniil: Oh my dear... Let me have a look.

3. this interaction with grace :)

Maria: But the worst is my spiteful little brother. I want nothing to do with him! Had he not been so stubborn, had he left the Polyhedron, no one would have to expell my mother from Focus. Simon would have ascended the throne without further ado, and everyone would have been happy... Daniil: And a thousand children would have been thrown out on the street to die? Maria: Let a million of them die - if only to save my Mom! They're not worth her little finger... Daniil: Don't say so.

the way that mr daniil dankovsky is so extremely dedicated to defeating death, yet overworks himself and doesn’t seem to interested in taking care of himself properly, and the amount of times he references suicide - “i’d rather shoot myself than fail” and when he finds the two infected people he asks “is there a gun here? with three bullets?” - it’s so. so so interesting to me. this is a dlc about him refusing to die... is it just about refusing to die as long as he doesn’t achieve what he wants? if his death meant he would finally defeat death, would he choose death? ... i don’t think i even need to ask that, this all points to Yes, Yes He Would

all the Dadkovsky content confuses me. a guy said “where there’s children there’s suspicious activity around” and my two options were “good work i don’t like children either” and “why the fuck are you wasting time on what some dumb kids are doing”

that’s very paraphrased but personally i just don’t see daniil as a person who’s good with kids. like he can be decent with them but in general i don’t see him having too much patience with them? that’s my personal headcanon though of course. also of course i chose “are you all insane, you’re not supposed to shoot kids” to that one army guy bc i do think daniil has that much basic decency

pathologic is so mean

this isn’t exactly my first time playing marble nest i did actually play a few minutes of it when i first got pathologic 2, before i even played the actual game, and it was when i was feeling really Depressed and decided playing video games would make me feel better. i don’t know why i thought pathologic 2 would make me feel better. err anyways i got to the steppe people and the worm operation, but when i failed i got even more sad and immediately turned the game off

accidentally found the infected people before i could get to that operation again but rest assured i’m trying to scrounge up whatever could help me succeed on this operation. i know it’s probably useless and i’ll fail no matter what ‘cause i don’t got a scalpel but i want to try

when i went to go see aspity and i talked to the lad out front and i had to give up one of my items ‘cause the only other option was “ugh you and your stupid steppe superstitions”

pathologic is a comedy

i don’t like geogiy kain very much. the conversations with him are interesting but they also make me want to knock that old man’s teeth out

“are those who don’t seek to ascend to godhood unworthy of life?” thank you daniil. for once. exactly what i wanted to say to this old bitch

daniil is pretty obviously disdainful toward the people of the town, like, several of his dialogues always allude to it. “ungrateful bastards, all of you” “no one in this town is healthy, not in every sense” “more steppe superstitions” and such. i do think he thinks of people as numbers a lot of the time, but his quest to exterminate death is still something that i think he thinks is in service of people, all people, no matter how much he might look down upon some of them.

that said he’s still very concerned with protecting the healthy over those who are suffering. his map says “the living are here” and, no matter how doomed the infected districts are, the sick are still alive.

i love how the camera is lower is as daniil than as artemy. the bachelor is just a manlet menace

fuck i just got it. the many people around town named after birds. “birdies, birdies, gather ye here, around the marble nest”. and they gather around the house when the bachelor is going to die.

Dadkovsky and Clara

i LOVE their dynamic, so here’s some content

Daniil is THE reluctant caretaker

He acts like he doesn’t give a fuck about Clara, she’s just some insane brat stepping on the toes of professional adults, but the MOMENT he realizes something is actually wrong with her, he goes STRAIGHT into Dad Mode

And he didn’t even know he had a Dad Mode!

Pet names? Pet names

“Sweetheart” and “pumpkin” are his go-to for her

He questions her choice in bottoms. Her legs are going to get cold!

As such, he’s CONSTANTLY nagging her about putting on pants

“Oh, is the great Bachelor worried for me?” “No, you just look idiotic.”

(He is worried about her)

He doubts the Saburov’s ability to take care of Clara, especially given all her strange…quirks

Sometimes he finds her asleep on benches outside, groans to himself, and wonders if he REALLY wants to deal with this today. And then he trundles over to her and wakes her up, telling her she can sleep at the Stillwater instead of out in the elements.

“God, DON’T look at me with those eyes!”

He once let her use his coat because she was shivering (probably because she doesn’t wear pants), and he genuinely thought he was never gonna get it back (he did. very reluctantly)

He’s the type to worriedly insult Clara when something and happens. like, “what did you do, you stupid girl?”

He and Clara throw jabs at each other constantly, but one day, Clara was just in a really bad mood, and Daniil made a comment, and she just burst into tears

Cue Daniil going, “wait, no, no, no, don’t cry!” and frantically trying to get her to stop

Daniil Very Quickly learned that Clara is EXTREMELY touchy-feely and has no concept of personal space At All

One time, he snapped at her for hanging on him, and she looked like a kicked puppy after, so he heaved a sigh and apologized before explaining that she can’t just go and always get in people’s personal space bubble whenever she wants. She understood well enough!

She still likes using him as her own personal piece of furniture, though

She’s just very touch-starved and craves affection more than food

Speaking of food!

If Daniil has some to spare, he’ll give Clara some food

She always refuses it, though

Which makes him snap at her for being so humble in the time of a famine

After the Plague has ended and Daniil and Artemy become a thing (because we all know those two want to be together), Daniil is even more adamant on getting Clara to eat

Among other things

He’s lucky enough to have found a family in this damn town

Clara has nobody anymore

And although she acts like she doesn’t care, Daniil knows that’s not true

The poor kid is lonely. She wants a family again. But, as brash as she may be, she doesn’t want to impose, especially on Daniil and Artemy

When she invades the house (which happens a lot), Daniil forces her to take a bath while he washes her clothes and that stupid beanie

Daniil tried to teach her how to swim (because i just know that girl can’t)

“Get over here and let me fix you” -Daniil, 24/7

I headcanon Clara with claws because she’s a weird little earthborn creature and deserves freaky bestial traits, and Daniil attempts (key word: ATTEMPTS) to clip them because they’re a safety hazard for EVERYONE, including herself, and she is SO DRAMATIC about it. yowling and crying like a dog getting its nails trimmed. Daniil thinks it’s amusing. and then she bites him.
