Una ciudad condenada al fracaso. A una maldición eterna. Eso es Gyeongju. Que el encanto de las calles pintorescas, sus templos, palacios y naturaleza no te dejen engañar. Erguida con la mítica historia del monarca Hyeokgeose. 

En 69 a. C. los jefes de las seis jefaturas se reunieron para discutir la formación de un reino y elegir un rey. En el bosque, en un pozo llamado Najeong en Yangsan, una extraña luz brilló en el cielo, y un caballo blanco se inclinó hacia tierra. El jefe Sobeolgong de Goheo descubrió un gran huevo allí. Un chico salió del huevo, y cuando fue bañado, su cuerpo irradió luz, y los pájaros y las bestias bailaron. Sobeolgong le levantó, y los seis caciques le veneraron. Le llamaron Hyeokgeose, que significa “mundo brillante”. Los jefes le hicieron rey cuando cumplió 13 años. Al devenir rey, se casó con la Señora Aryeong, de quien se dijo que había nacido de las costillas de un dragón. Aryeong no sólo fue una poderosa bruja y consejera del rey, sino también quién le maldijo a él, sus futuros hijos y también sus tierras. 

Aryeong jamás pudo darle un hijo varón y Hyeokgeose le acusó de adulterio y traición para deshacerse de ella. Con el corazón roto, Aryeong jamás enfrentaría su ejecución pues ella misma fue quién terminó con su propia vida en el puente Woljeonggyo. No sin antes maldecir las tierras, permaneciendo en el susurro del río.

Actualidad, año 2023

Hubo muchos años de paz y prosperidad, pese a que la ciudad de Gyeongju fue y sigue siendo tierra maldita para los pueblerinos y personas aledañas. Con el sacrificio de Aryeong, se abrió una camino al mundo oscuro, una  entrada a la casa de Daebyeol, el señor del inframundo. El agua del río llevó la oscuridad por toda la ciudad y pronto el mundo se llenó de criaturas de pesadillas.

Las desapariciones y muertes misteriosas siempre han sido motivo de preocupación para la población, pero en el último año un aumento en las cifras de criminalidad ha atraído la atención de la iglesia y de los medios locales. Algo o más bien alguien agitó las aguas otra vez y acabó con la aparente calma. Revivieron de las cenizas de un conjuro ancestral y de las calamidades prometidas. “Él o la culpable de remecer y jugar con entidades oscuras se encuentra entre nosotros” proclamó Lim Bon Hwa, actual pastor de la iglesia y cabecilla de la única organización que vela por la vida humana, durante uno de sus sermones. Él advirtió que la oscuridad se cernía sobre ellos e incitó a todos sus fieles a mantener los ojos abiertos.

Pero ellos no saben a qué fuerza ancestral se enfrentan. Desconocen la fuente del mal que llevó a revivir de su letargo a las criaturas que solo existían en el folclore y las historias. El tiempo corre y la única solución parece ser acabar con cuanta criatura peligrosa los aceche. Aún nadie sospecha que alguien ha regresado para reclamar la tierra que le pertenece y acabar con todos los descendientes del rey Hyeokgeose (su pueblo), sus hijos malditos.

Korean Mythology

Yuhwa (유화부인) was the goddess of willow trees.

Yeongdeung (영등) is the goddess of wind

Sanshin (산신) a guardian spirit residing in mountains, whose cult has been closely associated with mountain tigers.

Samshin-Halmang (삼신 할머니) is the goddess of life and childbirth.

Seonangshin (서낭신) is the goddess of villages, boundaries, and war.

Sang-je (상제) is Heavenly Emperor, and therefore king of the gods.

Paritegi is the goddess who serves as guide to the underworld, leading the souls of the dead to their resting place.

Minshin (문신) is the god of the door.

Kumiho (구미호) is nine-tailed fox. It can freely transform into a beautiful woman often set out to seduce boys, and eat their liver or heart.

Haemosu (해모수신화) is the god of the sun.

Jowangshin (조왕신) is the goddess of fire and the hearth. She protects the warm center of every household, and sometimes, she's viewed as a friendly goddess who visits with women in the kitchen and even offers advice and gossips with the women.

Jameunjang-agi (가믄장 아기) is the goddess of luck and fate.

Jacheongbi (자청비) is the goddess of earth and agricultural.

Eopsin (업신) is the goddess of wealth. She is one of the Gasin, or deities that protect the house.

Dalnim (달님) is the goddess of the moon. In one version of her myth, she climbed so high into the heavens, she reached the moon, becoming the goddess.

Daebyeol (대별) is the king of the Underworld.

Glancing out a window that overlooked the city, the brunette seemed to be in deep thought. Perhaps him coming back and rejoining the group was a bad idea. He enjoys these conversations and he comes to assist at the orphanage ever since.

Oculta, misteriosa y peligrosa para cualquier cazador que se acerque a sus inmediaciones. Si Maseol existe, también está su contraparte. Yosulhaggyo es una escuela creada para brujos en Corea del Sur. Aunque joven, pues nació en la década de los 90s, ha sido el refugio y lugar de aprendizaje de muchos brujos y brujas que no han estado afiliados a un aquelarre, como también de los que sí lo tenían y simplemente han sido “escogidos” por sus cualidades mágicas. Nació como una “visión” de Daebyeol, rey de las tinieblas, y un “deseo” de Aeryeong, la bruja ancestral que maldijo a los humanos de Gyeongju. La escuela respeta y venera a ambos, siendo común el practicar rituales y ofrendas hacia ellos con la esperanza de recibir un mayor “poder”.

Su edificio es imperceptible para cualquier humano curioso. Se ubica en el campo, a las afueras de la ciudad y rodeada de toda la naturaleza posible. Su fundación fue posible gracias a la posesión de un demonio sobre el cuerpo de Kim Jae-Yong, un adinerado terrateniente, que cedió el espacio físico y financió todo el proyecto. Desde afuera aparenta ser un granero abandonado y destartalado, pero bajo un montón de hechizos e ilusiones se esconde una vieja mansión llena de espacios adaptados para la instrucción de magia.

La escuela acepta brujos y brujas a partir de los catorce años, que es cuando se cree alcanzan una buena madurez para el dominio de sus habilidades sin representar un mayor peligro para ellos mismos, finalizando sus estudios con veinte años. Como no es un internado ni una escuela común, Yosulhaggyo funciona solo en horas nocturnas para que los alumnos pueden regresar a sus hogares una vez finalizadas las clases y asistir también a colegios diurnos.

Al contar con una cantidad reducida de estudiantes, en Yosulhaggyo no existe una división rígida por curso, sino que los estudiantes se dividen por habilidad y aprenden todos juntos, de acuerdo a su madurez y ayudándose mutuamente. Cada tipo de magia se posee un tutor asignado para instruir a sus aprendices. De todas formas, la escuela cree que es importante que todos conozcan, al menos de forma teórica, el abanico de habilidades y métodos de uso, aunque atender a los talleres ajenos a su habilidad es algo optativo.

Además de instruir a sus estudiantes y ayudarlos a potenciar sus habilidades, Yosulhaggyo también cumple una función organizadora y sirve como nexo y lugar de reunión para los diferentes aquelarres, que antes mantenían poca relación. Bajo su techo se comparten costumbres y tradiciones, así como también se discuten estrategias de defensa y planes de ataque, ya que después de todo se encuentran unidos contra un enemigo en común.

Daebyeol is still mystery to the denizens of Hell, but that hasn't stopped some demons from taking an interest in him.

Note: Some of you may have already noticed, but I used the Monster Musume manga as a reference for drawing this. I have no experience drawing snake-girls, so I pretty much drew Miia and changed her hair and outfit to match Ophelia's.

The nature walk was so densely overgrown from lack of use that even the dappled sunlight, pretty and golden as it was, couldn’t provide enough light to brighten the area out of dimness. Vartouhi didn’t mind it, however; it reminded her very much of the freely-growing rainforests of home. Her steps slowed until she finally came to a halt, tipping her head back to take a deep breath.

Perhaps to an outsider, she might look as if she were taking a moment to enjoy the fresh air. In reality, she was trying to decide what to do about the person following her. It wasn’t the first time she’d noticed she was being watched over the past few weeks. Vartouhi, having grown up with eyes always on her and whispers flowing around her, was very sensitive to that feeling, and her intuition was very rarely wrong about it. Frustratingly enough, she had never caught just who it was watching her. Every time she felt like she got close, the feeling vanished--the person looking away, or gone.

It was unnerving, to say the least. A human watching her too closely was a bad sign. And if it was something inhuman... She took another deep breath, because that was an unknown. Finally, she opened her eyes and turned slightly, looking over her shoulder. Her eyes scanned the trees, and she called, “Why don’t you come out?”
