Chakraborty Kingdom of Copper is probably one of my favorite reads this year. The storytelling is so much better from the first book, primarily because the world has been laid out. While the first book was world-building and characterization, this second book is full of power play, politics, and questions on morality. It sometimes reminded me of Game of Thrones. There is also a character who is painted to be the savior but I only see them as a tyrant in the making. When I finished this book, I kept thinking what rating to give and if there is anything I didn’t like to make me deduct points. Fourth book of the month down! This was another buddy read with my amazing buddy read friend! And we are FLYING through our reads this year! Three in one month! I rated this a 5 because the writing was beautiful. You NEVER know who to trust or who is the “bad” or good” guy. And I believe that it’s situational perspective- because I think this is politically/socially driven. But I’m unsure because it’s only the first book!!! Is there a series you’ve been delaying finishing because you need to go back and re-read the books? The Daevabad Trilogy is one for me. I got The Empire of Gold from the library, started reading and realized that I couldn’t remember much about the previous two books, just that I liked them! ❓Have you read The City of Brass? What was your first impression of this book?   So here is my (not) favorite category - an unpopular opinion.   I postponed this review for a while, but it's time to accept - I didn't like The City of Brass. I wanted to like this book, to fall in love with this series and I just couldn't.   I had time to think about why it had happened this way. I guess the answer is simple as much as it is not. I couldn't connect with our main characters - Nahri and Ali.   A small synopsis - Nahri is a con artist who is dreaming to become a healer someday. She accidentally summons the djinn and has no other option than to go on an adventure with him to try and reach the city of her ancestors - Daevabad. Ali is a young djinn prince living in Daevabad and he tries to choose a side in an ongoing conflict inside the city. Ahead of them a lot of trials and hard choices that can affect the lives of many.   If we continue speaking about our main characters, I don't think they were written badly, I think that the character work was rather solid. They just weren't great for me. The plot didn’t help with it because our characters rarely acted proactively. The plot forced them to do something, not the other way around. The only proactive character was the summoned djinn, Dara, whom I actually liked a lot. But he wasn't the main character and his page time in the book was not that big, so he alone couldn't make it for me.   In the end, when the final culmination occurred I just tried to understand why I should care and failed in it. It was hard for me to finish this book.   Also, I want to highlight some things you can enjoy in this book - the worldbuilding is a really interesting one, we have a magic system, thousands of years of history, and beautifully written places and landscapes. The mood of the book and the culture can create a really interesting experience for many fantasy lovers.   I know that it's a well-loved book and I will not persuade anyone not to try it, there is a good chance you'll love it. Thank you Netgalley for approving me to have this gorgeous E-ARC. I genuinely have nothing bad to say about anything in this book, besides being sad I can't stack it on my shelf like a trophy. This collection is set before, during and after the trilogy. It gives you more insight to events that happened as well as characters and relationships. This reminds you of how well thought out and complex ALL the characters in this series are. It was so easy and comforting to slip back into the wonderful setting of Daevabad and it's complex politics. I binged it in one sitting. It makes you FIERCELY miss this world and everyone in it. You learn so much more about the world, the characters and the past. I will absolutely be rereading the trilogy and this come October. I am so heartbroken to say goodbye once again to Daevabad. This book was EVERYTHING I wanted and more. It's an emotional ride that will have you laughing one moment, and brutally ripping your heart out the next. This was an incredible read. Easily 5 stars. ★ Have you read the Daevabad Trilogy? If you haven’t, is it on your TBR? I finally read it last year, after letting it sit on my TBR for ages, and it was a rare five star series for me. I assertively believe it’s one of the best epic fantasies of our time—there’s so many layers and nuance (and great romance), and @sachakrabooks’ attention to detail and clear knowledge of that historical period and region—not to mention world building of Daevabad and the political climate—left me in awe. Last night I also finished The City of Brass inspired @rosiethorns88 papercraft that @illumicrate included in their April box! I adore Nahri and this was a such a neat item to receive in the box, I hope we get more! 🥹 She’s now at home on my shelves with the rest of the family.
