I just vaguely watched Madame Web and ngl the weirdest parts are that
It almost feels.. fixable? Like obviously something happened in production or post that created... Whatever the hell this was, but the bones of something less demented and more sane are definitely there??
Which leads me to: this was SJ Clarke's film directing debut and I kind of feel like she got screwed over somewhere? She's worked on a hell of a lot of prestige TV shows, including Succession, and directing and producing eps of Jessica Jones, and the oddest thing is that I think you can definitely see some DNA of JJ in there? It's not done well, but the bare bones of the character dynamics kind of make more sense in that context, and the way it's shot and uses NYC? It has that colour palette and some character background parallels and just.. I can see the point in hiring a director from that background, and I'm inclined not to heap blame on her.
Don't get me wrong: it's pretty damn bad. But it's bad in a slightly fascinating way? And the weakest part of all (along with the truly baffling plot structure and pacing) is the villain. I have no words, just bad choices all around.
Second worst choice: having zero connection made for 99.9% of the film of the three girls to the Spidey characters they would go on to be. And the weirdness of the film really existing outside of the context of any other MCU happenings (obviously none of the characters have ever been acknowledged in the other live action Spidey film canon so???) What are we even watching and why is it relevant?! (And why are Adam Scott and Emma Roberts and Zosia Mamet in it???)
Which leads me to the part where the film seems to believe it is very much happening in some part of spider canon, and Dakota Johnson's expression of just abject blankfaced horror at being forced to join the baby shower games for AN UNBORN PETER PARKER might be my absolute favourite takeaway of the whole shebang.

Would you please, when you have the heart (or stomach) to do so, watch the new trailer for 'Persuasion' with Dakota Johnson? and please let us know your thoughts about it because most of mine are very bad
I watched it.
Honestly, many of the secondary and background characters aren't terribly costumed. But Dakota Fucking Johnson's Fucking Side-Bangs...god. Why. Also HATS. PUT SOME GODDAMN HATS ON THOSE GODDAMN REGENCY WOMEN.
I haven't read Persuasion yet- just reserved it at the library, actually -but this seems. Rather Not It, from what I've heard about the book? I'm concerned because the director seems to be one of those who thinks the past is somehow inherently staid and boring and needs to be made Shiny and Modern to liven it up. Which, as that popular post from yesterday said...why even make a historical piece if you feel that way?
Always a fan of racially diverse casting in period dramas. But is it just me, or does it unfortunately seem to happen in Certified Rancid movies and shows more than decent ones? Characters of Color In Actually Good Period Dramas 2k22. God knows it's too long in coming.
(Which reminds me, I need to watch David Copperfield and The Gilded Age. And re-watch Mystery of the Eiffel Tower. Thank heaven, there are some outliers to the trend.)

fleabag works because fleabag is about a woman who deflects her own loneliness with empty humor and sex in order to feel useful and accepted . emma (2020) works because emma the novel is just inherently funny and light and emma woodhouse is a silly and bright charismatic character. persuasion (2022) does not work because anne Elliot is not a witty edgy quirky girl. she is almost a background character in her own life the way she is ignored by everyone around her . she is lonely and quiet and full of regrets . i cannot think of a worse story to have a quirky modern twist breaking the fourth wall type adaptation than persuasion . it is supposed to be quiet and aching and subtle . *Kills Dakota Johnson

THE BASICS | gigi lombardi
name: Giovanna "Gigi" Lombardi face claim: Dakota Johnson age & date of birth: 31, October 13th, 1991 hometown: Chicago, Illinois time in chicago: Entire life neighborhood: North side occupation: Chef at Golden Age
THE PEACEKEEPER | background
Giovanna Giulia Lombardi was born into a world of shadows and secrets as the daughter of Enzo Lombardi, once the right-hand man to Angelo, the notorious mob figure. It was assumed she too would follow the lifestyle and one day join the mob, but much like her father Gigi never enjoyed being told what to do so she did exactly the opposite and strayed far from the criminal path. From her earliest memories, she carried an all-consuming love for the culinary arts being at the heart of a large Italian family. So it was easy when she channeled her innate talent into mastering the culinary craft, just as her father had mastered the world of crime.
Gigi found herself as the sous chef at the prestigious Golden Age restaurant. Yet, even beneath the heavy cloak of her family's criminal legacy, Gigi remained steadfast in her commitment to distance herself from their influence although at times it’s difficult. In every way she believed she wasn’t like her father, she truly was a replica. Gigi had a burning temper, a hot attitude, and a fiery spirit that can not be contained.
Despite her headstrong and stubborn nature, Gigi possesses a heart that, deep down, was soft and malleable when it came to her family and those she held close. She might have rebelled against the expectations pushed upon her, but the bonds of blood and the ties of love were something she could never deny, although she constantly defied it.

Just to preface this little rant but I am not a Jane Austin fan. I haven't read her books nor do I know why I decided to watch Netflix's Persuasion 2022. But I did. And I have never been so offended on an author's behalf than when i was watching it.
Now, I'm not opposed to modern iterations. I have enjoyed some modern interpretations of shakespeare when the RSC comes to town. But theres a difference between a modern interpretation and trying to modernise a period of history that doesn't need to be.
The fact they tried to slip modern dialogue into this film is offensive. Not only to the intelligence of the audience but the characters they're portraying. The reasons things like Austin and Shakespeares works are timeless is because to this day we can understand it. We might need a bit of context every now and then, but is Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet if you don't get the flowery language professing their love for each other? The fact they slipped modern sayings into this film brings you out of the story so much its impossible to sink bacn in.
Not that you want to.
I feel kind of bad for Dakota Johnson. Whoever thought this would make a good film lied to her. like I said, I've not read persuasion, but the fourth wall breaks were completely unnecessary for a character like her. Ignoring the book, a fourth wall break is primarily used by quiet characters. Anne is not a quiet character in this. In Fleabag, our main character is repressing her emotions so much we need these fourth wall breaks. Sure, she has her outbursts, but they're clever and have purpose. Another character I could pick from would be Jim from the Office. Jim is, for all his pranks, a quiet character. He's very subdued and not as emotional as Dwight. His fourth wall breaks are usually looking to the camera in a way that speaks 'are you seeing this?'
Anne is not like this. Her breaks add nothing. Her dialogue is pointless too. Why lament for an hour then talk with your ex anyway? The pining was nonexistent. The chemistry wasn't there and I blame the script more than the characters.
Speaking of bad things, those costumes. What were they thinking? Those costumes were awful. The background characters were okay. But they were boring. There was no cohesiveness. I know in ye olde times that people wouldn't be cohesive. But this is a film, there is symbolism in it. Like in Bridgerton (I stopped watching after 2 episodes it wasn't for me) but they used colours to band characters together. Families had specific colour palettes so we could recognise them and their importance in the scene.
In this film, there was nothing. They were all mismatched and while it was okay, it wasn't anything to brag about. Now Anne. shame on who did Anne. I don't know what angers me more her hair or her clothes.
We'll start with the clothes. Why the black? Black is for mourning. If anything, Anne should have worn black in the beginning to symbol the death of her relationship. But no shes wearing it in the middle of the movie for no reason. All of her clothes are dark or bright and they too lack a colour journey.
Worse, they're modern inspired. Anne looks SO out of place its painful to watch. Her trousers? Her coat? Why is she wearing that? Why do we have the need to force these characters into clothes we find acceptable for a protagonist and not accept what they would have worn as okay? Dresses are okay. This is a regency piece it is more than okay for her to look like a freaking girl.
She didn't need to be modernised and its offensive that they thought she did.
Moving onto her hair. Why the side bangs? I know people had bangs back then but not like that. Her hair being down too? Or just tied back like it is? Its disgraceful to the time period and the character.
So, for context, Anne is seen as a disappointment to her family. Why, if you are a disappointment, are you going outside looking like that when your family depends on their reputation to survive? Who is allowing her to leave the house like that? Any self respecting woman back then would pin their hair back. They wouldn't wear it down, especially when a formidable ex is on the scene. Anne would not wear her hair like that. The only people who wear their hair like that would be children, poor children at the very least. Maybe some of the poorest commoners.
But not a rich lady like Anne.
This movie was painful. I hope it flops and netflix realises that masterpieces like Emma which I watched after this are the way to go.

i think kiki’s post is the nail to the coffin. this entire movie’s background is so fucking problematic, and there’s a lot of performative stuff happening; from the male lead “allowing” the female lead (with the male lead being someone new to the acting world that is), to kiki’s limited screen time although her character’s necessary as far i know, to gemma’s limited presence as well, to olivia’s character being added and having unnecessary screen time, to of course, the drama surrounding the relationship and all that.
As a black Muslim woman I have always felt comfortable around other women of color. I have never liked white women and I have always been called crazy and extra but this is one of the reasons why I will never trust white women. Olivia painted this movie to be a feminism and about with the empowerment and it was all about white feminism and white women empowerment. Olivia had no reason to be in the film as much as she was. Her and Harry had the same amount of screen time. Her character was somewhat interesting but not enough to warrant the amount of screen time that she had. Gemma Chan was painted as the model minority mess and Olivia Wilde as a white woman was not the person to tell the story and I don’t know what the hell made her think that she could Or was qualified to.Kiki Lane was the most interesting character in that movie and her entire story and her as a character were so integral to the entire movie and she was only in it for five minutes. This is why I don’t trust white women or white film makers in general. Olivia was the director and she had a big hand and editing this movie and for her to edit out the most interesting character and for her to also be a black woman says a lot to me. White women are never good at telling the stories of women of colour because they can’t relate to it and they always do the exact same thing and diminishing them and editing them out. Gemma Chan and Kiki Lane were used to fill a diversity quota. Olivia Wilde got a lot of flak for booksmart being extremely white and remember that Dakota Johnson was originally supposed to play Gemma Chan role. she got a lot of flack for hiring Harry styles instead of hiring a Man of colour and she knew that her movie was extremely white so she hired Kiki Lane and Gemma Chan. In hopes that it would quiet down the talk of race on her set. But for Kiki Lane to not do any press for this movie and the only thing that she has posted about this film was the post that she put out today and it was just shading the entire production. Her higher and Shira already was a red flag, her asking him to make it work even though Florence was uncomfortable with him as she stated was a red flag, her professionalism on that set, The red flag, at her use of people of colour especially women of colour in this movie is a huge red flag and it’s crazy because Olivia prize herself on being an activist. Posting about black lives matter and stop Asian hate by the two women of colour who are coincidentally Asian and black were misrepresented and used terribly.Olivia Wilde is a white feminist and I’m glad people are realizing that she’s a shitty person
it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth seeing white people try to tell the story of poc as well, just the same as when a male author has his main character be a woman and you can just tell how out of touch he is.
but i think disliking all white women is generalization, and that sucks because i know you reached that conclusion because of all the performative feminists who have been trying to be inclusive and woke when all they are just some girlbosses who are trying to save their image.
kiki speaking up is just so much louder than all of the previous dwd drama and overall, man i’m lucky i’m not olivia wilde right now 💀

✦ DAKOTA JOHNSON, CISWOMAN, SHE/HER ✦ PEPPER SAWYER the THIRTY-TWO year old has been in Hidehill for HER ENTIRE LIFE and was an EX-COWORKER to Jade Parker, the missing person . Whispers on the streets are that the CASHIER AT DAVE’S LIQUOR STORE who lives in HAGFIELD. She is said to be FUN-LOVING and RECKLESS but I guess we’ll find out for ourselves.
i. stats.
FULL NAME: penelope sawyer
NICKNAME(S): pepper
AGE: thirty-two
DATE OF BIRTH: november 16th
ZODIAC: scorpio
GENDER: ciswoman
PRONOUNS: she/her/hers
CHARACTER INSPO: gretchen cutler (you’re the worst) , julie (the worst person in the world) , mavis gary (young adult) , molly gunn (uptown girls). more tba
ii. plotting points
born and raised in hidehill. her family owns a farm in hagfield. pepper graduated from hidehill high class of ‘08 and then went to college for writing but ended up switching to secondary education and taught high school english from 2012-2016
pepper knew jade since they graduated high school one class apart but they became especially close while they worked together at the high school.
pepper goes through a lot of jobs. she originally wanted to be a writer, but she flunked a few classes in college and didn’t think she had what it took which is why she became an english teacher. but she actually got fired after her fourth year teaching. she decided to take some time to “work on her novel” but that led nowhere so she got a job at cadillac lounge bartending (fired for poor performance) and then the playpen dancing (quit) and now she’s a cashier at dave’s liquor store.
she used to live in an apartment but recently moved home to the family farm after (TW DEATH) her father passed away and left the farm to her.
personality-wise, pepper is very directionless and irresponsible. she’s fun to hang out with but not dependable at all. she’s queen of excuses and loves a good pity party after the inevitable results of her own actions bite her in the ass. kind of a hot mess express tbh.
find her around town: working at dave’s liquor store, drinking at the playpen, getting tattoos at sorry mom, couch surfing at friends’ apartments in hide square because she likes being in the city (plus she doesn’t have a car and hagfield is too far out of the way), or being miserable in hagfield on the farm
iii. wanted connections
ex-coworkers ; anyone from any of her past jobs. she bartended at cadillac lounge for about two years and then danced at playpen for about two years. she was also a high school english teacher for four years. pepper was a fun but unreliable coworker. she was definitely the type to always make plans with people for after work, but also frequently bailed on shifts due to hangovers or general forgetfulness. all kinds of ex-coworkers would be welcome! her work besties, her work enemies, someone on the job she used to hook up with, old bosses who either hated or loved her, etc.
old relationships; pepper grew up in hidehill so anyone who may have grown up alongside her. childhood friends, high school acquaintances/friends/frenemies/enemies, her first love, an old crush, the person she lost her virginity to, ex-friends who had a falling out, her prior students, old friends who naturally drifted apart. (TW ABORTION, TEEN PREGNANCY) i also have plot point in her background where pepper got pregnant senior year in high school, got an abortion and then ghosted the guy bc she didn’t know how to deal with the situation. so that connection is open!
new relationships; anyone from around town she’s gotten to know in recent years. old customers from her previous jobs, owners or employees of places she frequents often, tinder dates, one-night stands, old or current neighbors, exes on good or bad terms, fwbs, drinking friends, toxic friendships, good influences, a parent-like figure to pepper...the world is our oyster!
assumed connections are also always welcome, as are chemistry-based plots :)
iv. deep dive
pepper has lived in hidehill for her entire life. she was brought up on a meat farm in hagfield that has been in the family for a few generations.
her real name is penelope but she’s never really liked it. pepper is her self-coined nickname that goes back to childhood and she doesn’t answer to anything else. although i’d love a plot w/ someone who gets to call her penelope like an ex she was in love with or old close friend
both of her parents had big personalities and weren’t exactly the nurturing type. pepper never had a great relationship with her family. growing up she had a lot of expectations placed on her without much love or support.
initially pepper was a straight-a student and soccer star. but she rejected the farm life. she liked to have fun and party. but she kept those two lives separate. she’d often be at practice running sprints while violently hungover, but she managed to maintain a balance between fun and having ambition and goals.
junior year, she tore a ligament and had to stop playing soccer. she spiraled a bit but found a new hobby. she's always enjoyed writing and used this time to focus on that. so even though she didn’t have the structure and discipline sports provided, she still had something to keep her motivated which was her writing. she’s always wanted to write a novel.
eventually she graduated hidehill high and attended college for writing. but she felt intimidated and out of her league. plus she was partying much more than actually writing. eventually she switched majors and decided to be an english teacher.
after college she got hired by hidehill high. but as much as she could bullshit during an interview, teaching wasn’t her passion. she was super unorganized and did enough just to get by. she was a frequent call-out and late arriver. after her fourth year, the district chose not to renew her contract. which is teacher talk for fired. they didn’t want to give her tenure since her job performance wasn’t the best.
after getting fired, pepper acted like this was a good thing because it gave her time to “work on her novel” which is something she’s always said she’ll do but never actually does. so naturally she just fucked around, went out, slept in, and never really wrote a thing. her drinking and partying, which escalated in college, got pretty wild at this point as well. she lived a pretty hedonistic lifestyle, reckless and irresponsible.
when her savings dwindled, she got a job as a bartender at cadillac lounge. she was a fun bartender, always down to do shots with patrons and chat with whoever. but a lot of people didn’t like her i’m sure because you’d order a drink from her and she wouldn’t know how to make it. or she’d be too busy chatting to actually take your order. or she’d abandon the bar to hook up with someone in the bathroom. so she inevitably got fired after about two years.
then she bounced to the playpen where she danced. but she couldn’t stick with it and quit after two years. again, claimed she’d do something valuable, make something of herself. but now she’s working as a cashier at the liquor store, taking advantage of the employee discount.
she used to live in an apartment but she just moved back to hagfield. (TW DEATH) her father recently passed away and left her the farm. pepper’s mother has been dead since pepper was in college. she’s had a strained relationship with both of her parents, but even after she came home from school she rarely saw her dad. he’d stay on the farm and rarely come into town or reach out. pepper was actually pretty shocked he left her everything. annoyed, though, because she never wanted any part of the farm, even growing up. and she doesn’t want that responsibility. so she’s begrudgingly living there for now because she barely had money for rent anyway.
as far as jade, pepper and her were one graduating class apart so they were familiar with each other. but they never considered themselves friends until they started working together at the high school. since they were so close in age they became teacher friends. they’d do happy hours and hang out outside of school and all. even when pepper stopped teaching they still remained close. so pepper is pretty torn up about the disappearance but in typical pepper fashion refuses to confront those feelings.
i will lovingly call pepper a hot mess. she’s truly the epitome of the “damn girl, you live like this?” meme. that girl who has nothing together in her life and its starting to become not a cute look now that she’s in her thirties. most of her friends have careers and significant others and children and she’s still doing tinder hookups and drunken one-night stands. constantly lying about how her novel is coming along to make herself seem like she has something in life going for her. she’s emotionally immature and doesn’t handle feelings or commitment well. pepper is laid-back and doesn’t take a lot seriously. she throws caution to the wind and doesn’t really think about consequences. she’s really fun to hang out with but in order to be her friend you have to be patient. and forgiving. she’ll definitely forget about plans or oversleep and be hours late. she definitely means well. but currently she just can’t seem to get her shit together

Blood Red : Chapter 3
Thank you, Mr. Fisk
Tumblr media
Hell's Kitchen : 2016
I wake up to darkness, something that's not exactly unfamiliar. I feel a small tug at something over my head and light floods my eyes. I groan at the intense lights on my face. It takes a second for my eyes to adjust until I can check my surroundings.
Okay, my hands are tied to a mental chair, I can easily slip out of the ropes. Someone is behind me to tear off the bag over my head. There is a metal desk in front of me with a glass of water on it. Not to mention a two-way mirror in front of me. This isn't a police office due to the lack of security cameras, the man behind has no badge on, also the rope instead of handcuffs is another dead giveaway. I've made enemies in my past but I rarely leave a witness or even someone to mourn them. I'm stumped by this until I remember the man from last night. He was wearing a suit with expensive fabric so he has some money. I try to remember more but my head is pounding.
The door unlocks revealing a dark-haired skinny man with thin, black glasses. Confidence radiates off of him. I tilt my chin up to combat this, I want him to feel small although I'm the one tied to a chair. He seems to pick up on this and lifts an eyebrow. I wanna smack him.
"Thank you, Johnson, you may leave." The guard behind me leaves the room as the skinny, smackable-faced man sits down. The door slams shut, and neither of us flinches. There's intense eye contact happening, like both of us are declining to speak first, trying to gain the upper hand. He smirks then opens up a folder while keeping eye contact. This son of a bitch, now I really want to smack him. Not punch, smack.
Looking down at the folder he looks back up at me. "Ms. Alice Solovyova, 16, was born in North Dakota on February 5, 2000." He looks back up at me, emotionless. "Nice to meet you" he extends his hand "James Wesley." I keep my stoic look. Then he makes a light, fake giggle with a tiny smirk growing. "Oops, I forgot. Let's be realistic here, you're just a kid and Alice isn't your real name is it." The confidence in his voice is so annoying. "Now, tell me your real name, and I'll untie your"
"You're lying."
"Why do you think that."
"We both know you're not that stupid. I killed a man twice as old as me with double the muscle mass I do, you would snap like a toothpick."
"So you did kill him?"
"Don't patronize me."
"Don't patronize me. Drop the façade. Who are you, where are you from, and how did you kill one of our best men."
"He was your best? That's sad for you, you must not be a very good organization." His face tightens, clearly annoyed. I can't help but smirk a bit. "Ooh, that struck a cord."
He aggressively slams the folder. "If you want to be stubborn that's fine. My employer won't too pleased."
"I don't careee," I say in a sing-song way. "You think I'm afraid of any of this?" I scoff "you clearly don't know how to do your job. I killed that man with ease, and he was your best. Your boss must be incredibly soft."
Wesley is pissed, ready to say something when the lock on the door clicks. I keep my eyes on this Ублюдок (bastard).
"That's enough Wesley, I'll take it from here." I look over to see the giant of a man. His voice was a sharp baritone. Wesley wasn't the biggest threat in the room anymore.
Wesley walks over to him and whispers something in his ear, which causes both of them to look back at me. The giant then nods at Wesley, allowing him to storm out of the room. Oh, I really pissed him off.
"Hello Miss Nikitina." I look at him confused. "You can drop the act, the man at the hotel was all too ready to get rid of that stuff in your room. Of course, we also ran some background checks, then a deep dive and a little investigating. The Russian government isn't as clean as they think they are, of course not after recent events exposing the Black Widow program."
"Sir, I-"
"Mr. Fisk."
"Mr. Fisk, I have no idea what you are talking about."
"Stop the lying." He looks down at the folder that he brought in. "Aleksandra Nikitina, born March 19, 2000 in Moscow, Russia to Igor Nikitin and Vera Nikitina. Former Black Widow." He looks me dead in the eyes "Does any of that ring a bell."
My voice turns sharp allowing my accent to show. "What do you want?"
"I believe we can help each other." He looks back down at the file, he knew everything about me so there was no point in hiding anything. I could even see that he had pictures of me in there from when I was first brought into the program and everything else. "You have very high marks here. You have the highest kill percentage." He smirks. "Here it says there is speculation that you are so ready to kill due to your bloodlust." He looks at me as I visibly stiffen. I can feel my pupils widen and my heart rate pick up. "Ahh, so it's true?"
"What?"
"The legend of the Bloody Widow."
"Excuse me?" I try not to show that the word blood has such an effect on me. Shit, even the thought of it makes my throat dry.
"A young girl who is so willing to kill that she gets excited. It's a sixth sense. And now she's here, after killing one of my men."
"He deserved it," I mumbled under my breath.
"Did you say something Ms. Nikitina?"
"I said he fucking deserved it." I look him in the eyes. "He was ready to hurt me, that man was a pervert and a pedophile. He's lucky I allowed him the mercy of death." Fisk was visibly pleased to hear my confession. "I regret nothing."
"I don't expect you to Ms. Nikitina. But I think we can help each other. You killed one of my men, you need a job and a place to sleep. I can offer you both of these things and more."
"More?"
Fisk smirks like he can offer me the world. "A list." He pulls out a different folder and slides it to me already opened. There are names, statistics, and pictures of hundreds of people. I look up at him, wanting more information before I agree.
"These are people who are, let's just say they're getting in my way. I would like them away from my operations," he stands up and holds out his hand "By any means necessary."
I smirk softly and finally let the rope drop from my arms, I slipped out of the knot as soon as Weasel entered the room. I stood up and shook Fisk's hand. "Thank you, sir."
He smiles and hands me a vile of blood to me, "please, Sir is too formal. Call me Mr. Fisk."
I tuck the vile into my pocket "Thank you, Mr. Fisk."

Collected thoughts on Netflix Persuasion, as promised:
First, the things I liked:
1. The actress who played Louisa was perfectly cast and she Understood The Assignment. She was genuinely a joy to watch. She said some truly baffling nonsense, and the whole thing where she was trying to convince Anne to go after Wentworth was weird, but none of that was the actress’s fault. I hope to see her in more stuff.
2. The actress who played Mary was clearly having the time of her life pouting and sighing and complaining. She had some of the most egregious instagram therapy lines, but I would have liked to see her as Mary in a better version of this movie. The same basically goes for the actress who played Elizabeth.
3. Dakota Johnson doesn’t seem like she’s ever directly to blame for Anne’s Whole Deal. She didn’t make anything better, really, but you can tell she’s got a firm handle on what she was told to do. The director and the screenwriters are definitely more responsible.
4. They significantly reduced the number of characters named Charles. (There are five in the book and two in the movie.) I’ve always thought there were an unnecessary number of Charleses in the book. I didn’t approve of the ways that they achieved this (other than changing Charles Hayter’s name to Henry Hayter, which was fine) but at least we were less likely to get confused.
What I didn’t like:
(for this section I’ll skip over the obvious stuff, like the weird plot changes and the way the script and direction leached all tension and subtlety out of the source material and how Anne’s characterization was a crime. I knew all these things were coming, and while they infuriated me, there are people who have expressed these things much more comprehensively than I feel I’m capable of.)
1. The big thing that bothered me was the absolute lack of visual texture or detail. The cinematography, the set dressing, the costumes were all uninteresting at best, and even though there were several shots pulled straight out of 2005 P&P, none of the sets in this adaptation looked lived in, and so little attention was paid to the background that you could forgive anyone for forgetting when and where this was all set. Even the location shots were unforgivably bare and sparse. That might be down to budget constraints, but still. Do something, anything to make me want to look at your movie!
2. There was no score to speak of. I imagine that this problem and the one before it are connected, since they both display a general disinterest on the part of the team, but come on guys. Give me some public domain piano music, or even more weird generic pop songs like that one at the end. (speaking of that, Jesus H Christ that was so jarring and on-the-nose and the stupid cherry on this whole stupid farce of a sundae.) A story like this could benefit from a score that develops the emotions of each moment and speaks to all the things that go unsaid (though this adaptation seems incapable of leaving anything at all unsaid)
3. I said I wouldn’t talk about the obvious stuff, but the narration was so stupid. I found myself thinking that it wouldn’t be as grating if she’d just talked to the bunny instead of the audience. Most of the time it wasn’t needed, either? Like they heard “show, don’t tell,” and decided they would both show AND tell. Since that’s better.
4. Captain Wentworth was Bad. The casting was bad, the acting was bad, the direction was bad, and the writing was bad. Who was that guy. People have said that he was wooden, and that he and Dakota Johnson have no chemistry, and honestly, those are, respectively, an understatement and a disservice to Dakota Johnson. He seemed sort of drunk half the time? like he was slurring a little and he was so gruff and his anger was so transparent. Where was the charisma? The gleeful spite? The shift from resentment to respect?  You never get a sense of why she or either of the Musgrove girls had any interest in him in the first place.
5. Speaking of the Musgrove girls, Henrietta was robbed!!! I realize that it’s easier to slim things down in terms of focusing on the one who is going to end up being the romantic rival, but they never gave her anything to do at all! and what we saw of her dynamic with Louisa was so fun and cute. It would have been nice even to see her react to Louisa’s fall, which she conspicuously Did Not.
6. Why does Frederick try to be friends with her before Louisa’s fall, by the way? Shouldn’t he still be mad at her, or at least at war with himself? The way they rearranged events in this movie made sure that none of the events/people’s reactions to the events made any sense. I said I wouldn’t talk about this but I lied.
6a. And why did we completely abandon Louisa as a character after her fall? Why were there no stakes? We don’t even hear about her other than the “oh she’s engaged to a captain” misunderstanding bullshit. Like Anne totally forgets she might be dead????
7. A lot of people say it seems like no one here read Persuasion, but I think it’s more likely that they did and they just didn’t like it. I’ll admit, Persuasion is not Jane Austen’s most tightly plotted novel, and the back half is sort of weird, but she is still a thousand times better at writing than the people who are involved with this. The absolute hubris of thinking you know better than Jane Austen.
TL;DR: Persuasion miniseries when?????

EVANIE-MAY JENNINGS (olivia cooke) is looking for her OLDER SISTER/TWIN !!
name of the connection: completely utp, surname jennings. it would be cute to have another southern-inspired name but that’s just a suggestion!
preferred faceclaim: any female faceclaim that’s white and could reasonably pass as evanie’s sister. some suggestions are mia goth, crystal reed, dakota johnson, florence pugh, billie piper, lily collins, michelle keegan & grace van dien.
description: occupation and background are largely up to player other than the fact that they are from alabama and grew up on a ranch. this connection would be of evanie’s sister, either older than her or the same age (twin). i would like this muse to be quite independent and a lot more put together than evanie herself, able to help her sister when things get tough. the connection between evanie and her sister will be extremely close and they will both rely on one another to get through life, whatever path they decide to choose.
player contacted before application?: no! but if you’d like to i’m at @evaniemay

Note
she once posted a video of a helicopter I think on her stories with Seb’s voice in the background. Some people weren’t sure if it was actually his voice or not. I think someone posted about this on instagram (not very sure about where the comment was specifically) and she liked a comment saying it was indeed seb’s voice in the background, then I think she deleted the story? Can’t remember exactly. Few months later a Dakota Johnson fp posted a screenshot of Annabelle following their page. // I find it funny when people try so hard to find excuses for these kind of actions
