"It can be argued that an immortal would have to be distant, or eventually all it would know is loss. What would our world look like to such a creature? What actions would they be capable of when everything except themselves is fleeting and therefore of little relevance to eternity? If we as elvhen discover a path back to what we were, we must be sure that the path is wide enough for all. For the individual who stumbles into that journey, who endures when all else is dust, can only be alone." - Keeper Ilan'ta

We've talked about Ghilan'nain and her monster making experiments.
And I saw a post somewhere about how the Dalish consider the halla "brothers and sisters" to the clan, and what if that is actually literal? Like, Ghilan'nain experimented on elves to make the halla?
And while that is horrifying, I want to point out the concept art for the varterral.

That torso certainly looks like it might have once been a fucking person to me!
Let me just drop my new gif here.

I just can't help feeling that Solas taking Lavellan's vallaslin and then leaving them is so cruel. I know he doesn't mean to be cruel. I know he doesn't even mean to do it like that; he wants to share the truth about himself, and he just can't, and it's that realization that pushes him to end the relationship, because of how close he comes to telling everything to this person he loves. I know that he loves Lavellan and wants to share just one piece of the truth, even if he can't share all of it.
He sees right away how much the revelation about the origins of the blood writing has hurt Lavellan. And if Lavellan pushes back on the idea of removing them, he drops it immediately. He never forces the issue.
But it's still such a sudden decision for Lavellan to make, after such a painful revelation. And what if they do end up regretting it? What's going to happen if they return to their clan, or try to make contact with another if Clan Lavellan has been lost? How will they begin to explain this to their fellow Dalish elves (keeping in mind that they don't yet know who Solas is)?
"I met a lone elven apostate, and it turns out he's a Dreamer, and he told me that one of our most sacred traditions is actually a mark of slavery. And I believed him. And I let him remove my vallaslin."
I think the decision might be easier for Lavellan whose clan is still alive and well, if they know they still have a home and a family to return to. For a Lavellan who has lost everything, their home, their family and friends, who has probably had to fight to maintain their identity and their beliefs in the Inquisition even if they've also made friends and found community--the choice is heartwrenching.
In taking the vallaslin, Solas takes from Lavellan the most obvious sign of Dalish identity, community, culture, and tradition. And then he breaks up with them. Lavellan can't even say "I've lost everything but at least I have you."
Every time I see gifs or videos of that scene, of Solas gently saying, "Ar lasa mala revas," literally I give you your freedom, it just breaks my heart, because I know he means it. I know he wants to give them that.
But what kind of freedom is it? And at what cost?

The Devil.
The vallaslin were chains, once, after all.
Halevune Mahariel | Hero of Ferelden
Details and process gif (x). Full version (x). Symbolism below.
The Devil. (x)
When the Devil card appears in a reading it usually shows that you are not in control of your life, sometimes as a result of your own actions, but more often as a byproduct of inaction. This loss of control often leads to loss of hope, and a lack of faith in your own abilities.
Your own mindset is a critical factor when the Devil card appears. If you think darkness has won, it has. If you are willing to let others exploit and restrain you, then they can and they will. But no one has power over you unless you give it away. If you are willing to release yourself from the chains of ignorance, you can do so, and you can step into the light. See how much you can accomplish when you believe you can.
UPRIGHT: shadow self, attachment, addiction, restriction, sexuality
REVERSED: releasing limiting beliefs, exploring dark thoughts, detachmen
Halevune Mahariel is not dead, but sometimes he thinks the world wants him to be.
From granting self-governance to the Denerim alienage to giving the Dalish their own land in Fereldan to becoming Teyrn of Gwaren himself, you'd think Halevune Mahariel's legacy would be unforgettable--the changes he's made, irrevocable.
And yet they are being forgotten, and undone, even a mere year after the Blight. His friend, now-King Alistair, made promises about protecting the fledgling alienage, about making reparations for Loghain selling them into slavery...and yet they seem to be empty promises.
As the world grinds its heel into elves across Ferelden, and then mages everywhere, Despair eats at Halevune just as the Taint in his blood eats at him. All Hal can see are his failures, the evils of the world. All he can feel is the weight of his losses: his clan, his youth, his legacy...and soon, his family. He can hear the Calling coming for him in his dreams, and all he wants to do is spend time with his young son and his bond mate, Morrigan.
Halevune can no longer see the light. He is being held back by the chains of his past, by the fear of death, and by a Despair of his own making.
For Hal must remember... The world will never change if he stops trying.
The Vallaslin - Falon'Din is the God of Death in Hal's culture, and Hal is now keenly aware of his mortality as a Warden who underwent the Joining after already being infected for a while. His time is limited on this plane, and he is haunted by the marks that he wears on his face for that reason. But one day he will also learn the truth of Falon'Din and the Evanuris, and Despair for another reason.
The Raven Feather - Represents Morrigan and Kieran, the only lights in his life. They are the torch, temptation, for him to abandon his duties and responsibilities. All he wants is to go to them, and spend his limited time with them.
But...
The Cobwebs - Hal is already dead, dying, decaying, forgotten. Ferelden would relegate him to a historical figure if they could. The common folk are tired of his empty promises and his failures to secure change for them or protect them, now that the Blight is over. And the nobles are tired of him trying.
The Hands - Hal's clan is dead, and many others are dead, since he became a Warden. He has no one to rely on, no one to go back to. Only ghosts. Hal feels like he is alone in the world besides Morrigan and Kieran, though he does have friends. He just can't see them through his anger and despair.

Oooh, where did you see that Dalish eat nugs? Is it a codex or something?
It is actually just part of the camp. Background stuff that went undetected by me in my first (and only lol) playthrough of dao back before I was deep in the food lore weeds. I noticed it when I kept seeing this post of a modded photoset of gifs in the Dalish camp in the Bercilian Forest in dao.
Me being a food fiend that I am, I went looking for other screenshots and videos to make sure it wasn't another mod or something. However, I couldn't find it as I wasn't sure where to look - turns out I was just not lucking out with videos and just ended up asking people in multiple discords I'm in about it since I could only find modded games and screenshots that actually took a second to looked at the camp.
Luckily some folks in those servers were able to confirm it for me, so I didn't have to haul out my ps3. They were also able to give me the location of where it is in the camp; at the campfire where you'll meet Gheyna. It has the halla pen in the distance to the left of it. They have a nug roasting over an open fire.

what's dragon age
AHAHA....HAHAHAHHAHA....AHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHA
so I'm not well versed in all three of the games that are out right now since i havent played through the other two besides inquisition yet so my explanation will be based on what i know through that game and just gen knowledge BUTTT
the dragon age series is a fantasy RPG made by bioware (they made mass effect and like a million star wars games) and each game is set at different times, each going in choronological order, which is IMPORTANT!! because the dragon age franchise has a feature called "tapestries" which are something seperate to the games where you choose all the choices you made from your playthrough in the games, and these choices once exported will actually EFFECT the next game in the series which is really fucking cool
the games are set in a world called Thedas, and there are four main races of people which are dwarves, elves, humans, and qunari. you can play as three different class types: warrior, mage, and rogue, which all let you specialize in their own skilltrees with perks that you slowly gain over time by doing quests around thedas (in inquisition at least, this is all very classic rpg game stuff)
the world of thedas is VERY written out and developed, with almost every character you find having their own story and opinions on everything around them. there are a few main groups of people in these games: the mages, the templars, the chantry, the qun, the dalish, as well as different districts of people based on race. theres also the Circle, the Divine, etc. theres a LOT!!! And as you wander through the games you can unlock a lot of books , journal entries, notes, etc. that let you learn EVEN more about the world around you. There are also several books that go into HEAVY detail about specific and non-specific characters, regions, foods, wildlife, etc. (i happen to own two :]) there are also story-specific novels based around certain characters.
the most recent game, inquisition, has you set in the Frostback Mountains in Haven, where you have been captured as a prisoner after being caught at the scene of the murder of the Divine, who was killed by an unknown evil creature. You awaken in the prison with a bright green mark on your hand, which you find out can seal "rifts", tears between the living world and what is known as The Fade. You then go on a journey of rebuilding what is known as "The Inquisition", a group of people to bring peace to Thedas if something were to happen to The Divine. You learn about your past, make new companions, fight against demons and deal with the rising fear and lashings out of both sides of a mage versus templar war.
The games each are about 30-40 dollars roughly with DLCs included, which i personally believe are ESSENTIAL to playthroughs of these games as they are packed to the brim with lore as well as amazing cosmetics like armor.
allow me to find gifs of all my favorite characters from inquisition

1, 2, 4, 7, 12, and 20 for the DAV asks??? (Hopefully not too many ;w;)
There's no such thing as too many!! :D
I already answered 1 and 4 in another ask, but I'll copy-paste them below a cut for you ^^
2. Which Dragon Age game is your favorite so far?
Gotta be da2, it's the game that compels me most in terms of story and characters. I love that it's a tragedy, that the ending never changes no matter what you do because you are a little guy against an overwhelming forces BUT what you do still matters - Hawke is my favourite Dragon Age protagonist and I will love them forever because they might not have power in the overarching story, but in the little things? In the everyday lives of people? Hawke matters so much, they help people and make things a little better for them, and they did their best. It's not a perfect game, but it's a game that makes me feel a lot of things, and I love that <3
7. Which character from the previous games or other media are you most hoping will make an appearance in DAV?
Isabela, Dorian, Maevaris, Fenris, Vaea, Francesca, Valta, Calpernia, Valya, ISSEYA (not in-person obvs, but I'm begging for just one mention of my aroace Warden Queen, she deserves acknowledgement), Sandal <3
(there's definitely someone I'm forgetting but these are the ones I know for sure I want to see in some fashion)
12. What's one thing you're hoping we DON'T see in this next game?
Anders.
jks I know bioware won't bring him back now but I genuinely struggle to think of what I don't want because shard searching, multiplayer and micro-transactions are confirmed to be gone for Veilguard :D
20. Post a picture or gif that conveys your current level of excitement for Dragon Age: The Veilguard!
Tumblr media
an accurate representation of the goblin in my brain <3
1. What was the first Dragon Age game you played?
Origins!! It was back in 2014 - I'd seen some Inquisition clips and looked into the series, and decided to start right at the beginning ^^
4. What does your worldstate look like going into DAV?
This... got lengthy, but here is my canon world state for Dragon Age:
Origins: Warden was a female Human Mage who romanced Leliana; Redcliffe was saved, sided with Mages, Connor was freed from possession, Anvil was destroyed, Bhelen was crowned King, Zathrian sacrificed himself to end the curse, the Urn Sacred Ashes was preserved, all companions recruited, Alistair became a drunk, Anora was crowned as Queen alone, Warden performed the Dark Ritual (modded lol), Avernus was spared and allowed to continue experiments, Shale rediscovered their past, and Morrigan was allowed to leave through the Eluvian
2: Hawke was a female Mage who romanced Isabela; Bethany died escaping Lothering, accepted Merchant Cavril's bribe and worked for the mercenaries, protected the mages without killing Karras, sent Feynriel to the Dalish then to Tevinter, Carver became a Grey Warden, killed Bartrand, Aveline married Donnic, didn't side with Petrice, killed the Arishok, made Tallis angry, sided with Janeka and killed Larius, Varric didn't keep the idol, killed Castillon, helped Merrill leave her people peacefully and preserved the Eluvian, let Zevran go, let Keran go, turned conspirators over to Orsino, reunited Gamlen and Charade, helped Anders, killed Anders, sided with Orsino
(I also have a rogue Hawke who is the twin brother to Marian; he romanced Fenris, helped Tallis, and sided with Larius)
Inquisition: Inquisitor was a Female Elven Mage and Merciful Judge who romanced Solas; denied being Andraste's Herald, helped refugees in the Hinterlands, recruited and dissolved the Templar Order, declared for the Inquisitor, left Hawke in the Fade, recruited the Grey Wardens, Celene rules and was reunited with Briala, Dorian reconciled with father and planned to return to Tevinter, Blackwall redeemed as Rainier, Bull saved the Chargers and became Tal-Vashoth, Cassandra discovered the book and rebuilt the Seekers, Sera killed Harmond, Cole became more human, Solas freed his friend, helped Varric track the red lyrium source, Vivienne was given the heart of the snowy wyvern, Cullen did not take lyrium, Josephine and the Inquisitor did favours for the du Paraquettes, Leliana was inspired, Calpernia's past was investigated, respected the Temple Guardians, spoke to Calpernia, Inquisitor drank from the Well, Leliana became Divine Victoria; shared the truth about Ameridan, earned a legend mark from the Avvar, discovered the source of the tremors, Bull stayed loyal, redeem Solas, disbanded the Inquisition. Additionally, Inquisition forces were deployed regularly, all keeps were captured, lake rift was closed, and Sutherland's company was successful.

Kits Lavellan waded into the Well of Sorrows, keenly aware of Morrigan’s eyes boring into her back. She would have liked to turn back and say something snide, maybe gloating, to that shem witch—but she was immediately distracted by an onslaught of energy.
It was like walking through a crowded room unnoticed: glimpses of faces, clips of conversation, a shuffling of emotions and pieces of a shared memory. Forms of spirits seemed to brush by her, preoccupied, but when she turned to look at them they were gone. They moved through her and around her in strange loops, perpetually in the corner of her eye.
Kits hesitated only a moment before cupping the water into her hands and taking a drink. The spirits froze suddenly and all turned to face her before she was plunged into darkness. The lights of their eyes were the last things to fade.
