Rare Roman vessel Found at 2,000-Year-Old Burial Site in Poland

Archaeologists investigating a 2,000-year-old burial site in Poland have discovered cremated remains inside a Roman vessel, one of very few of its type ever found in the country.

The discovery was made during research in the town of Kazimierza Wielka, southern Poland, led by archaeologists from the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. In total, 160 objects were found, with some dating back as far as the Neolithic period, reports the Polish Press Agency (PAP).

A particularly interesting find was a burial site dating to the pre-Roman and early Roman period, which contained four cremation graves and 23 skeletons.

One set of cremated remains had been placed inside a vessel (pictured above), made from copper alloys, imported from the Roman empire and decorated with dolphin shapes.

“Such vessels are exceptionally rare in Poland,” said Kamil Sikora, a spokesman for the Jagiellonian University.

In areas occupied by the so-called Przeworsk culture, which lived in what is now central and southern Poland between the 3rd century BC and the 5th century AD, only seven such vessels have been discovered and only four were used as urns.

Alongside the urn, the archaeologists discovered weapons typical of warriors from the Przeworsk culture, including a sword and two spearheads, as well as a shield boss. The items had been ritually bent and damaged, which is consistent with the funeral practices of the time.

The researchers also note that the discovery of skeletal remains is unusual for the Przeworsk culture, which normally cremated its dead. Most of those found at this site are the remains of women, who were buried with ornaments and items of clothing.

Gupta's hel • India

Het verkeer in New Delhi valt moeilijk te omschrijven, omdat er geen woord is dat evenveel lawaai, stank en stress kan uitdrukken als dat kluwen chaos waar ik nu in verzeild ben geraakt.

Het is dan ook onvermijdelijk dat een vers aangekomen reiziger hulp moet zoeken bij de elementen die deel uitmaken van de chaos. Je zou denken: de politie! Helaas, zij structureren de chaos enigszins, maar ze kennen of controleren ze niet. Om vooruit te geraken in deze kolkende gasuitbrakende brij van motors, karren, bussen, trucks en fietsen moet je deel worden van dat leven. Te voet is een optie, maar zoals in de jungle geldt ook hier het recht van de sterkste: eten of gegeten worden. Wijselijker is het om te parasiteren op een oerwoudbeest en zo een weg te slaan doorheen de gevaren. Mijn oerwoudbeest heet Gupta, een riksja-rijder.

Om en bij de 60 jaar, draagt Gupta een vuile flodderbroek, schamel hemdje en een zwarte wollen muts die meer een punt- dan bivakmuts is. Gupta is een vrolijke kerel: van vertrek tot aankomst siert een brede glimlach zijn uitgemergeld en rimpelig gezicht en drijven zijn ogen glinsterend in zijn kassen. Ik leer Gupta kennen als ik om 21u een taxi nodig heb naar het marginaalste treinstation in Noord-Delhi. Daar vertrek ik met de nachttrein naar Bikaner. Ik moet niet lang nadenken waarom er in de autoriksja zulke stevige palen het dak ondersteunen. Een plotse bocht van 180° bewijst het nut van wat voor 20 minuten mijn houvast wordt, een houvast aan mijn leven. Gupta heeft vrolijk het stuur volle gas omgedraaid en we rijden nu, tegen het verkeer in, naar het station. Ze rijden hier bovendien links, wat het er voor de Europese mens niet overzichtelijker op maakt. Naderende koplampen schieten rakelings langs ons heen en ik waan me in Startrek Enterprise die zich op Warp 2 snelheid een weg baant langs vijandelijke ruimteschepen en sterrenstelsels. Een vlot ontweken heilige koe brengt me terug uit sciencefictionland en na wat professioneel bochtenwerk rijden we weer in dezelfde richting als de rest van ons baanvak. Mijn hart klopt nog.

Indiërs halen het maximum haalbare uit elke situatie, dus waarom zouden ze zich beperken tot twee auto’s op een tweebaansvak? Verloren ruimte! Daarom staan we al een 10 minuten aan te schuiven in een file, vijf rijen dik, van stootkarren, Mercedessen, autoriksja’s en trucks. Maar dat laat Gupta niet aan zijn hart komen. Op het ogenblik dat een naburig voertuig zich verroert, schiet Gupta met een ratelende motor tussen hen in en ontketent een symfonische explosie van getuut en geschetter. Gupta glimlacht. Als het verkeer langzaam op gang komt, trapt hij op de staart van zijn racemachine en slalomt tussen de trucks en bussen door. Ik zie hem kijken naar een plekje aan onze rechterkant en mijn gezond verstand zegt: te weinig plaats en te weinig tijd. Ik zie het lichtschijnsel van de achterliggende auto al groter worden. Wanneer ik onze riksja dan een ruk naar rechts voel maken, verlies ik alle controle, laat mijn levensbeschermende palen los en roep met uitgespreide armen ‘NO GUPTA NOOO!’

Als ik even later mijn hoofd van onder mijn handen haal zie ik Gupta in het spiegeltje zijn hoofd naar rechts draaien, spuwt eens straal rood vocht de straat op en met de blik terug op de weg blijft hij onverstoorbaar verder glimlachen. Gupta is zen. Want Gupta kauwt op drugs. Ik slinger in de riksja van hoek tot hoek en Gupta botst naar links, vliegt naar rechts, wurmt, glijdt, hort, stoot, duwt en draait zich een weg door de stroom. En dan begrijp ik het, dan pas zie ik wat voor een man er aan het stuur zit van dit goddelijk voertuig. Gupta heeft het Verkeersnirwana bereikt: hij schikt zich niet naar de stroom, maar de stroom schikt zich naar Gupta.

Trillend reken ik de 100 roepies af en blijf nog even kijken hoe Gupta zijn plaats afdwingt in de verkeersstroom. Nu weet ik het zeker: Gupta is Boeddha.

Zeeman

Ik ontmoette Thierry op een maandagmiddag in het wassalon aan de KVS. Een kop kleiner dan mij, sjofele aanblik door zijn uitgetergelde gezicht, crappy leesbril en joggingbroek met opengeritste broekspijpen waaronder hij zonder sokken in sandalen door het wassalon slenterde. Ik zag hem voortdurend op zijn gsm kijken, bellen, berichten typen zonder ooit het hoofd omhoog te heffen om te zien wat er zich verder in het wassalon afspeelde. Terwijl ik mijn was plooide zoals 100 keer ervoor, kwam hij naast mij staan en begon uit te leggen wat de beste manier is om was te plooien en in een zak mee te dragen. Hij was namelijk zeeman, en enkel zeemannen plooiden hun was op de manier waarop hij vervolgens uitlegde: 'Je moet je kleren en lakens plooien totdat ze in een makkelijk klein formaat liggen, en daarna oprollen. Zo bespaar je plaats en krijg je geen kreuken of plooien als je ze dan uitpakt als je ze nodig hebt.' Ik bedankte hem en probeerde meteen zijn techniek uit, onder zijn toeziend oog, terwijl hij wat heen en weer schuifelde op zijn sandalen, een blik wierp op zijn immer trillende gsm, en dan weer aandachtig mijn handelingen bekeek. 'Ik zie dat je rookt' zei hij en wees me op het pakje tabak dat half uit mijn jaszak bengelde. 'Wil je een sigaret?' 'Nee, merci, ik rol alleen'. 'Ja', zei hij, dat deed ik vroeger ook. Ik zag pas bij een tweede ontmoeting met hem twee weken later waarom hij was overgeschakeld op filters. Hij vertelde me dat hij in Brussel is gekluisterd door de pandemie, want hij had een mooi zeilschip 'mijn thuis', zei hij, maar het was hem verboden om uit te varen. Maar ook pas die tweede keer hoorde ik dat dat niet de echte reden was dat hij in Brussel bleef.

Twee weken later, opnieuw op de middag, zag ik hem zitten met zijn lege trekkersrugzak, voorovergebogen over zijn gsm, in sandalen en joggingbroek, zijn gezicht nog meer uitgemergeld en met gehavend kapsel. Hij zag me niet passeren, want ja, de gsm was het centrum van zijn aandacht. 'Die verplichte vakantie doet hem geen goed' dacht ik. Hoewel hij de vorige keer alleraardigst was en zich niet verder moeide met mijn geplooi, hield ik me toch maar bij mijn was en zou pas iets zeggen als we oogcontact maakten. Blijkbaar hadden we dezelfde routine en dagindeling, want toen ik mijn was uit de droogkast haalde stond hij aan de andere kant van de dubbele tafel, gsm in de aanslag, zijn wasgoed te plooien. 'Het werkt goed eh?' zei hij terwijl hij in een draaiend gebaar met zijn handen het rollen demonstreerde. 'Jazeker' zei ik achter mijn mondmasker, 'ik doe het nu altijd zo, bedankt!'. 'Alleen zeemannen plooien hun was zo', herhaalde hij nog eens. Aan de rechterkant van zijn broek hing een goudkleurige musketon die regelmatig tegen de tafel kletste en telkens een metalige tik gaf met elk stuk wasgoed dat hij uit de wasmand-op-wieltjes nam. 'Nog niet opnieuw op zee?' vroeg ik hem om het begonnen koetjes en kalfjes gesprek wat leven in te blazen. 'Nee', zei hij, 'het assisenproces loopt nog 2 maanden. Ik heb mijn vrouw en kinderen al 4 maanden niet gezien'. Oh, dat was nieuw. Een zeeman in een assisenproces, dat is een heel andere context opeens. Hij liet me een foto zien van zijn huis in Noorwegen: een luchtfoto van een klein eiland omringd met rotsen, wat schaarse bebossing, en aan het uiteinde een pittoresk wit huisje met helrood dak. 'Er zijn geen wegen naartoe' lachte hij. 'Niemand gelooft me als ik dat vertel, maar er zijn geen wegen'. 'Dus enkel per boot?' , vroeg ik. 'Ja, enkel per boot'. Een telefoongesprek onderbrak ons, en ik plooide en rolde zeemansgewijs verder aan mijn hemden, beddenlakens en de enige twee broeken die mij na de coronakilo's nog pasten. Ik duwde alles met een stevige duw naar beneden, keek in mijn ooghoeken naar die gestrande zeeman tegenover mij, en murwde als laatste nog mijn wasmiddel en wasverzachter in de te kleine IKEA waszak die ik had gekocht sinds mijn laatste verhuis.

Net op het moment dat ik goeiendag en tot ziens wilde knikken, zei hij: 'neem beter een rugzak, dat is makkelijker om te dragen en verdeelt het gewicht beter'. 'Ah, goede tip, dat doe ik de volgende keer zeker' zei ik. Ondertussen stond hij ook klaar om te vertrekken, en we slenterden samen naar de deur. 'Sigaret?' vroeg hij, terwijl ik in zijn verweerde hand twee sigaretten zag steken. 'Ja, merci' zei ik meteen, me wat schuldig voelend dat ik die de vorige keer had geweigerd. We wandelden naar buiten en installeerden ons naast de deur. Ik grabbelde mijn aansteker uit mijn jaszak die gebruiksklaar in de aanslag lag. 'Hoe heb je dat huis gevonden?' vroeg ik. 'Dat is van mijn grootouders geweest, ik ben oorspronkelijk van Noorwegen. Het is midden in de fjorden gelegen, voor de beschutting tegen de arctische koude. Het water gaat er zo snel, wacht, stel je voor, je hebt een stuk materiaal van vijf kilo dat in het water ligt, dat gaat zo snel in de stroming' en met een snelle zwaai stuwde hij het denkbeeldig materiaal tussen zijn handen van links naar rechts. 'Dat is heel snel' antwoordde ik. 'Ja', zei hij, 'het is veilig omdat door de snelle stroming het ijs niet kan vormen, zodat de beren het eiland niet kunnen bereiken. Die zijn op zoek naar voedsel en eten tijdens de winter gemakkelijk een mens op. 'Amai', zei ik, 'dat is een andere wereld'. 'Maar ook handig', ging hij verder. 'Als je wil vissen moet je enkel een net in het water hangen: de vissen kunnen niet ontkomen en in een mum van tijd heb je een grote vangst'.

'Die assisenzaak sleept serieus aan' zei hij terwijl hij zijn eerste trek uitblies. Ik volgde de hand met de sigaret, en zag hoe die trillend van zijn mond naar heuphoogte zakte. Nog steeds trillend. 'Ah', dacht ik, 'vandaar dat hij niet meer rolt'. 'Het is niet makkelijk,' ging hij voort.

'Het is niet makkelijk' herhaalde hij. Ik inhaleerde en trok mijn wenkbrauwen omhoog. 'Ik ben eigenlijk patholoog van beroep, voordat ik op zee ging, maar ben ermee gestopt.' Ah ok, bijzonder, dacht ik. ' Een paar jaar geleden heb ik mijn twee 3-jarige dochters verloren. Ze hebben ze gevonden, aan stukken gesneden in een vuilniszak in een villa in St-Pieters-Woluwe. Ik moest naar het bureau komen om mijn dochters te identificeren. 'Laat zijn, Thierry', zeiden ze, 'het is te zwaar', maar ik ben getraind in dode lichamen zien. Het was verschrikkelijk. Ze hadden de wangen opengesneden, de ogen ingedrukt, onthoofd. Ik ben gaan kijken, misschien tegen beter weten in. De smeerlappen hadden er plezier aan beleefd, want er was sperma teruggevonden'. 'Oh, dat is heftig' mompelde ik, volledig aangeslagen door deze wending in zijn verhaal. 'Ik heb heel erge dingen gezien, omdat ik als patholoog op het veld werkte. Niet in het ziekenhuis, waar alles redelijk proper is als het aankomt, maar als eerste, op de plaats zelf. Wat mensen elkaar aandoen... Mijn vrouw kan al 8 jaar niet slapen, ze wordt trillend wakker en gaat trillend slapen.' 'Dat geloof ik', zei ik en zocht ondertussen naar woorden die in zo een gesprek gepast waren. Ik vond ze niet. 'Maar ik blijf hier', ging hij verder, 'ook al bedreigen ze me op straat om ermee op te houden. Zie je die musketon?' Ik knikte. 'Ze laten me met rust als ze dit aan mijn broek zien hangen.' Hij draaide de beveiliging los en schoof zijn vingers door de musketon zodat de lange zijde over al de vingers van zijn gebalde vuist liep. 'Dit is een legering van titanium en aluminium. Als je hiermee iemand in zijn gezicht slaat, zijn arm, zijn been, dat is gegarandeerd gebroken. En het is legaal.' Zijn hand trilde niet meer als hij mij de witgespannen vuist liet zien. Politie en dieven houden afstand als ze dit zien'. Ik keek afwisselend naar zijn ogen en naar de vuist, tot hij opnieuw het ding aan zijn broekgesp vastmaakte. 'Het is dus ook nog eens gevaarlijk om hier in Brussel vast te zitten' stamelde ik. 'Ja', zei hij. Ik mag ook geen levende mensen behandelen. Ik ben dokter, maar alleen voor dode personen. Ah, Mijn vrouw belt me , tot de volgende keer'. Hij gooide de peuk in de goot, nam snel zijn gsm uit zijn broekzak en wandelde weg.
