The main opposition Democratic Party called for President Yoon to resign or face impeachment.

Yoon declared martial law only to reverse the move hours later and what he did for a few hours as President triggered a political crisis in South Korea.

Yoon told the nation in a TV address late on 3, Dec that martial law was needed to defend the country from nuclear-armed North Korea and pro-North anti-state forces, and protect its free constitutional order, although he cited no specific threats.

“It was clearly revealed to the entire nation that President Yoon could no longer run the country normally. He should step down," senior DP member of parliament Park Chan-dae said in a statement.

Six South Korean opposition parties said they would submit Yoon's impeachment bill on 4, Dec. the Democratic Party said in a message to reporters, with voting to take place on Friday or Saturday.

If Yoon resigned or was removed from office, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo would fill in as leader until a new election was held within 60 days.

"South Korea as a nation dodged a bullet, but President Yoon may have shot himself in the foot," Danny Russel, vice president of the Asia Society Policy Institute think tank in the United States, said of the first martial law declaration in South Korea since 1980.

I was thinking, following the DM scenes we got in the new teaser, especially the "closing door" one.

What if episode 5 is gonna bring a Killing Stalking situation? That one scene in KS where Yoon Bum was in the basement with someone kidnapped by the villain (Could be the guy in the plastic bag with Danny) playing a card game together. What if Armand switches between that guy in the bag and Daniel with the horrors, killing only the other guy in the end? And the door's prospective would actually be from the other guy still alive...

god honestly i have to get better at doing Weird Research, i think that's one kind of really crucial flavor my writing is really missing at times. for vital light a lot of the things i've been looking up have been little things i think would be embarrassing to get wrong, like the mechanics of horseback riding or hunting and fishing seasons. i also think the way my knowledge-integration into story works isn't as deliberate as it should be and works kind of backwards – in other words my writing tends to be strongly influenced by the nonfiction i read. so for instance i have a weirdly detailed concept of opera and music composition in the vital light universe, even though they're not necessarily immediately relevant to the plot, because i was reading a book about 19th century music while outlining key parts of it.

prose-wise i think i catch a lot of Current Katia Writing Style influences when i reread paul yoon's short stories, and reading and interpreting homestuck as an adult a few times single-handedly fixed a lot of the fundamental flaws with how i wrote character and voice when i was younger. danny lavery's writing was super formative to my sense of humor, obviously, and so was terry pratchett's even though i think that's more true of my writing as a teen than it is now. finally my friend esther's fiction – and our conversations about it – has been really influential for me in figuring out how to Get Back Into Fiction Writing As An Adult. going further back in terms of childhood influences i have been forever shaped by the way diana wynne jones wrote magic, coming-of-age stories, and multiple worlds, and (despite the myriad problems in her work) the way laura ingalls wilder wrote setting.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited diplomatic tensions by reintroducing defense cost-sharing discussions into ongoing tariff negotiations with key Asian allies, Japan and South Korea. Japan and South Korea each host significant U.S. military forces—approximately 50,000 troops in Japan and 28,500 troops in South Korea. These forces are vital to U.S. influence and strategic posture in the Indo-Pacific, especially with rising threats from China, Russia, and North Korea.

Pushback from Asian Allies

Both countries have publicly expressed that defense cost-sharing and trade talks should be treated separately. South Korean officials have confirmed that there are no formal plans to renegotiate the Special Measures Agreement (SMA). Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok stated that cost-sharing is not currently under review. Similarly, Japan has reiterated that defense-related expenses should not be linked to trade tariffs.

Trump’s Pressure Tactics Spark Concerns

Analysts view Trump’s approach as a strategic move to extract financial concessions from both countries. During his first term, Trump demanded higher payments for U.S. troop presence and even threatened to withdraw U.S. forces if his demands weren’t met.

Experts suggest that this tactic could undermine long-standing security alliances. Danny Russel, from the Asia Society Policy Institute, commented, "Trump sees alliances in economic terms." Linking military support to financial contributions may damage mutual trust and complicate diplomatic relations.

South Korea's Costly Gamble

Ahead of the 2020 U.S. election, the Biden administration and South Korea agreed on a five-year SMA, increasing South Korea’s contribution by 8.3% to $1.47 billion. This was intended to lock in favorable terms before Trump’s potential return. However, South Korea may now be forced to renegotiate from a higher base, complicating the situation.

South Korea is currently under a caretaker administration after the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol, with a new election scheduled for June 3.

Japan’s Strategic Role

Japan is home to the largest overseas deployment of U.S. troops, including a forward-deployed aircraft carrier strike group. Under its current agreement, Japan contributes around $1.48 billion annually toward U.S. defense costs, with the agreement running until March 2027.

Both Japan and South Korea continue to invest heavily in U.S. military hardware, such as advanced warplanes. Pentagon officials have lauded these financial commitments, noting their significance in strengthening the alliance. General Xavier Brunson, commander of U.S. Forces Korea, emphasized the importance of these investments in ensuring a robust and enduring partnership.

Growing Debate on Nuclear Defense in South Korea

Trump’s pressure tactics have reignited a debate in South Korea over national security. With uncertainties surrounding long-term U.S. defense commitments, some South Korean voices are calling for the country to develop its own nuclear capabilities.
