In January 2019, @tommmmyla and I drove from Palm Springs, California to Death Valley National Park. Along the way we stopped in Amboy for a look see (I’ll post more pics of that later) then through the Mojave National Preserve and then entered the Park via Shoshone and then up from the southern end of the valley where we stopped by the ruins of Ashford Mill, then by Badwater (close to the lowest point in North America, at 282 feet (86 meters) below sea level, then went up to Dante’s View which is 5,758 feet (1,755m) above Badwater, and has one of the most absolutely stunning views of anyplace anywhere. It was my fifth visit to Death Valley since 2006, and there’s still much more there I want to see. Death Valley

Ein Name wie aus einem Karl May Roman. Das Tal des Todes. Einer der heißesten Orte der ganzen Welt. Und das war es auch schon, was wir davon wussten. Bis vor kurzem hatten wir weder eine Ahnung, dass es einen ganzen Nationalpark drum herum gibt, noch, dass man dort zelten könnte.

Wir erreichen den Nationalpark erst relativ spät am Abend und schlagen unser Zelt in der untergehenden Sonne am Rande des Panamint Valleys in Panamint Springs auf. Das ist eine weitere Überraschung für uns, dass sich der Park tatsächlich über mehr als nur das eigentliche Death Valley erstreckt.

In einer so unbelebten Wüste zu zelten ist ein großer Genuss. Es gibt kaum lästige, kleine Viecher vor denen man fliehen müsste, die Temperatur ist angenehm, man zündet sich ein Feuer mit knochentrockenem Holz an, blickt in einen fantastischen Sternenhimmel und wenn der Mond aufgegangen ist, taucht er die ganze Welt in ein magisches Licht, sodass man wunderbar ohne Lampe herumspazieren kann.

Am nächsten Morgen machen wir uns auf, um über die nächste Gebirgskette endlich ins wirkliche Death Valley zu kommen. Doch bevor es soweit ist, begegnen uns völlig unerwartet eine Gruppe von Kojoten, die eigentlich als sehr scheu gelten. Diese hier sind offenbar daran gewöhnt, aus den Autos gefüttert zu werden. Das ist natürlich verboten. Erwartungsvoll blicken sie uns an. Von uns bekommen sie nichts.

Und dann ist es endlich so weit. Wir kommen endlich in das Tal, in dem wir den ganzen Tag, eine weitere Nacht im Zelt, diesmal im Furnace Creek direkt im Death Valley, und noch den nächsten Vormittag verbringen. Leider spüren wir schon den Zeitdruck im Nacken. Hätten wir noch mehr Zeit zur Verfügung, würden wir gerne noch ein paar Tage länger bleiben.

Es ist für uns kaum nachzuvollziehen, wie man glauben kann, dass dieser Park überschätzt sei. Die Landschaft ist wunderschön und unglaublich Abwechslungsreich. Man fährt ein paar Minuten und schon sieht alles vollkommen anders aus.
