Cinder's desire for power is a desire for SAFETY, both bodily and emotional safety, we see this shit time and time again

Freedom is how she phrases it, but why would she join Salem after having obtained her freedom? She was likely an undocumented slave and her master was now dead, yet she joins a sorceress in order to gain power to be freeer? Makes no sense

It's a desire for safety, one of the most primal needs for a human, right after bodily needs like food or sleep

Its been 9 VOLUMES, 9, and Fanon Jaune fans are still so focused on wanting Cinder to die, to make her suffer, to rape her, that they've entirely missed the fact that Cinder's whole character arc is a MONUMENT to the very same thing they want:

A character driven by revenge and hatred, and to make someone pay for their suffering.

What has that gotten Cinder in 9 Volumes?

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

I mean, Robyn was the one fighting injustice in atlas/mantle in volume 7, team rwby where still primarily focused on successfully launching amity, and all their other time was spent fighting grimm, which again is still noble and helps mantle but doesn’t get at the root of the problem,

And in volume 8 it was still ultimately about saving the civilians from Salem, still a noble goal but they weren’t trying to break mantle free from atlas’ oppression at any point

Even arresting Jacques was ultimately about stopping Salem’s plan

Also salem as a person with free will and agency doesn’t necessarily work as a stand in for a force of nature like climate change.

4. The final straw that made you block that annoying person.

Dappercat (everyone in the RWBY fandom knows this person because odds are they’ve blocked him) telling me that anti Faunus racism didn’t really exist outside of Atlas and that people in Anima putting up anti Faunus signs and trying to fucking murder them “didn’t count”. It was at that point I knew this guy was just obsessed with sealioning at anyone who hadn’t blocked him yet and that we needed to just cut him off until he starved from lack of air.

For RWBY, the Faunus racism in the early volumes really sucked.

I hate to admit it, but I find Asajj Ventress/Quinlan Vos a thousand times more interesting when he’s her lost Lenore/not quite fridged wife than any actual chemistry (or lack thereof) they have together. I don’t know if it even counts as shipping when I don’t want them to be together, but I like her being haunted by him more than I liked any of their actual interactions.

well let's start with your lovely incredible Vendetta one-night stand fic!!! just wanna bewitch you in the moonlight (just wanna bewitch you all night). Also I love how you choose titles.

(every boy crazy 'bout a) Sharp Dressed Man, by dappercatllc. RE. This fic opened my eyes to this ship (in conjunction with fon's stuff). Half pining, half smut. A sequence of actions that I think I've permanently tattooed into my brain from how much I've read this. I could really do a whole list of dappercat fics, but I'll refrain for now.

Chemical, by silvercap. RE. I thought this had solid plot, gripping tension, good descriptions. SUPER creepy. Excellent hurt/comfort. I'm so normal about this one, trust me.

fine, FINE. I'll talk about the cod fic that ate my brain for a week. I don't think I've ever been less normal about something than I was about this one. I read that beast in one day, and then proceeded to think about it every waking moment for at least an entire week. And then I read it two more times. I'm actually rereading it again.

7. 💯 A fic that makes you think #writergoals.

Nothing Gold Can Stay, by perkynurples. The Hobbit AU. I am impressed when authors do plots really well. It was so fun to see how the catalysts made the characters change over time. There's a later chapter that broke my brain because of the buildup to it.

Sansûkh, by determamfidd. The Hobbit. This has 1 million hits for a reason. AAAH. It switches between a lot of POVs, and manages to make all of them interesting. I love when authors pour so much into their OCs (and time was obviously spent!). There is LORE.

in the desert, by Iravaid. Cod again. This one has crazy cool descriptions and imagery. It was a very interesting unreliable narrator experience, plus it digs into the Ghost comics.

I feel like dappercat is live-demonstrating their own point here by willingly accepting new evidence on the psychology stuff. Like, that's the point. If they thought ghosts caused mental illness you'd end up playing with a ouija board to try to change their mind, while they play with their own. Sidhe-said/banshee-said. Instead people brought up the current state of psychology and it's failings, they agreed it needs to be changed, no planchette needed.

I think it's an accurate observation that most people just pick and choose their justifications based on what they want to do, in practice. The original post is also right, despite the circular arguments going on in this dumpster fire. Religious texts make for great books-o-justifications for to cherry-pick from. I don't ever bother to meet a religious bigot in the field of their own religion, it is just a tool for justifications, and a waste of air to try to tell them how they are wrong about their religion when it's all equally disconnected from objective reality.

It's all just an excuse, the behavior comes first, they'll find an alternate excuse somewhere, religious or secular.

They'll cherry pick from the historic body of scientific learning, like some outdated Freud crank. They won't change their mind when faced with new info, like when people stick with old disproven DSM crank. Science will keep producing new info, testable things. Meanwhile, old religious doctrine will just gain authority with age.

OP's closing words on their original post is right, I just think it's healthier to, you know, engage with reality for your beliefs. It's probably also healthy to accept that things with a scientific consensus are serviceably true until more information is uncovered. If you must be arguing with a bigot, it's less of a waste of air if you are arguing about real things. Real things can be true. You gotta believe that real things can be true. If a bigot tries to make an excuse out of real things they can be proven a liar. You can't prove someone a liar about things that were never real. Real things can be true.

When criticizing religion that promotes or claims some form of bigotry as a central belief, it's very important to remember that people who don't want to believe in god but want to be bigots will find new ways to frame and justify their bigotry.

For example, "women are more likely to be possessed by demons" easily turns into "women are more prone to mental illness that compromises their judgment."

"The gods decreed that these people would be our servants forever" easily turns into "these people never evolved intelligence like we did, and they need us to guide them and tell them what to do."

"You'll go to Hell if you do that!" easily turns into "This is what's destroying society! You're betraying everything your ancestors worked hard to create!"

"They worship evil gods! We have to convert them to our good and pure religion!" easily turns into "their culture is primitive and barbaric! We have to free them from these backward beliefs!"

Basically, remember that what you're criticizing is selfish, fearful, and manipulative behavior, which can and will emerge in any context; and that atheism is not a quick fix for systemic issues and deep-seated prejudices.

Yes, my point is that at least as far as we’ve been shown thus far, Blake isn’t Robyn, she didn’t combat Jacques, perhaps she will be more like Robyn in the future but she wasn’t there in volume 7, they’ve also been too busy fighting Salem to get involved in politics and I don’t really see any opportunities arising in vacuo.

On this same thread I’m not really sure how Weiss would’ve taken down Jacques if watts hadn’t done along but that’s another discussion

They did take part in a lot of things you claim they didn’t do enough in, but no they aren’t where you somehow expect them to be and yes they are balancing it all with a massive looming threat.
