Daredevil: Woman Without Fear

For all that I bagged on the story written for Daredevil during Venom War, it came ultimately from a place of love. I was made a fan of Daredevil during Charles Soule's run, and the recent runs by Chip Zdarsky and Saladin Ahmed have only reinforced this with their excellent writing. I've been following the Daredevil story for awhile now, and while it's currently heating up over in the main comics, I was happy to see this solo outing from Elektra.

(Side note: I'm a little annoyed when superheroes share code names. There's two Spider-Men, Daredevils, Flashes, Supermen, Batmen, and eight Green Lanterns. I would like like a little speciation, thank you very much!)

The story follows Elektra as she tracks down a contact from her assassinating days to search for the ward under her care, Alice. As the events play out, her oath not to kill will be sorely tested.

I had fun with it. The plot's not the strongest part; it's more about the characters and the fight scenes. I especially liked the involvement of Joe Garrison, the new Punisher (probably not permanent, but he's also quite fun). It's also a stress test for Elektra, who up to this point has lived fairly comfortably within the oath she swore to Matt Murdock, and now has to contend with what it means to be a martial pacifist.

Surprisingly for a book with a mystery hook there's very few twists, and some twists are untwisted into the obvious idea. It does make for an interesting and textured reading experience, but it makes a re-read almost entirely unnecessary, even though the series is rather unmemorable.

If you like street-level crime fighters this is a good scratch to that itch. Otherwise you could skip it.
