Pink Floyd's legendary album The Dark Side of the Moon
The Dark Side of the Moon was released in 1973 and became one of the most influential albums in rock history. It was conceived as a concept album, exploring themes of conflict, greed, time, death, and mental illness. The record was heavily influenced by the struggles of former band member Syd Barrett, who left due to mental health issues.
The album features nine tracks, including:
"Speak to Me" – An atmospheric introduction with sound effects foreshadowing the album’s themes.
"Breathe" – A dreamy, slow-paced track about life’s fleeting nature.
"On the Run" – A chaotic instrumental piece symbolizing anxiety and modern life.
"Time" – A powerful song about the relentless passage of time, featuring iconic clock sound effects.
"The Great Gig in the Sky" – A haunting vocal performance by Clare Torry, representing death.
"Money" – A funky, satirical take on materialism, featuring a distinctive cash register loop.
"Us and Them" – A melancholic reflection on war and human division.
"Any Colour You Like" – A psychedelic instrumental showcasing Pink Floyd’s experimental sound.
"Brain Damage" / "Eclipse" – A climactic ending, touching on insanity and existential themes.
The album was recorded at Abbey Road Studios, using innovative techniques like multitrack recording, tape loops, and analog synthesizers. Engineer Alan Parsons played a crucial role in shaping its sound, and the prism cover art was designed by Storm Thorgerson, symbolizing the band's lighting effects and the album’s themes.
The Dark Side of the Moon spent over 741 weeks on the Billboard charts and remains one of the best-selling albums of all time. It’s a masterpiece that continues to captivate listeners with its deep lyrics, immersive soundscapes, and timeless themes.
The cover features the iconic prism design, created by Hipgnosis and George Hardie, which symbolizes light dispersion and the band's complex sound. This album is widely regarded as one of the greatest of all time, blending psychedelic rock, progressive elements, and deep philosophical themes. It includes classics like "Money," "Time," "Us and Them," and "The Great Gig in the Sky".

The Visitor aka STRIDULUM (1979)
Tumblr media
Ha ha yeah, wooo YEAH
da daaaaa dadadaDAA DAAA DAAAAAAA DADADAAAAA DADADADADA DA DAAAAA YEAH!!!!
This is the most prog rock movie I've ever seen in my life. This is spiritually being painted on the side of a van. Does it have a good plot that makes sense? I don't know, asshole, does Emerson Lake and Palmer's seminal classic Karn Evil 9 part 2 have a good plot that makes sense? I'm telling my kids The Visitor (1979) is Star Wars.
I noticed a pattern when looking at other reviews of this film: they fall back on comparisons, as a slight. Well, it's sort of The Omen, and it's sort of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and it's sort of Carrie, and a little Battlestar Galactica and maybe The Birds... which all sounds very derivative, I suppose, until you actually a movie smashing all those things together, and realize, wait a minute, that's bonkers. It feels like critics grasp for these comparisons while foundering in The Visitor's psychedelic sea, desperate for a point of stability. None of these references offer stable landmarks, though, if you hope to predict where the film will veer next in its crazy pursuit of cool ideas and weird setpieces.
Not that the comparisons are totally off base, mind. This IS the story of Katy Collins, a Wicked Little Kid in the vein of the Omen's Damien or Carrie's... Carrie. It's just that this generic convention of the Bad Seed gets set up at the beginning of the film with a bizarre cosmic encounter between an old space wizard and an apparition of the devilish little girl in what looks like a blizzard on mars, followed by a whole ass monologue by "A Jesus Figure" about cosmic psychic spirits of good and evil dueling it out across the planets, delivered to a bunch of bald, white robed children. Hell yeah. But! But. Katy Collins is otherwise a classic, average evil psychic kid who kills people with telekinesis. And uses it to rig professional basketball matches for her shitty step dad, possibly at the behest of the satanic businessmen he answers to who are REALLY giving some serious drone hive vibes what with the way they all turn their heads at the same time. Oh and she's got a pet hawk that murders people at her behest. No, trust me though, it's a really derivative movie. Not like the movies we have now like uhhhh
Tumblr media
[sweating] uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Better touchstones than typical blockbuster fare might be the mind-expanding chaos of paperback epics--Clive Barker's Great and Secret Show, King's Dark Tower, Morrison's The Invisibles. Here's some other fun facts: it was directed by Giulio Paradisi (it's a heavily italian production) but he directed it under the brilliant name "Michael J Paradise". The italian title was "Stridulum", which I guess is latin for something like a harsh or shrill sound or shriek, which fits the whole repeating War Between Birds motif and the use of bird cries in the soundtrack. Oh, and one of the guys playing basketball in the first scene with Katy is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, actual famous athlete. It's sort of a bizarre and improbable movie!
But I don't think I'd be nearly so dazzled by all the crazy shit this film throws at the audience if not for Katy herself, played brilliantly by a young child star Paige Conner. She's written and performed in a way that suggests malice, yes, but a childish malice, a bit of a put-on, a belligerent front that gets more and more petulant and uncontrolled as John Huston as the space mystic Jerzy (yes) Colsowicz (get it) confronts her with the limits of her own powers. There's this sequence where Jerzy and Katy play pong against each other. Jerzy, smiling, accuses her cheating by speeding up the game with her powers. Katy, giggling genuinely, gloatingly informs him that no, she sped up the game using a switch on the game console. Later in the film she tries to drop a fire escape on his head, of course. In that conversation, though, there's this charming chemistry between them, the chemistry of a smart young person and an older adult willing to treat her, not as a peer exactly, but as a thinking being, not just a Thing to be smacked into shape. This dynamic is crucial to the climax of the film and its ultimate conviction that no matter how ghastly Katy is, there's more than just evil to her, which might not be the most seasonally horror-forward message but is honestly pretty damn refreshing. Like I don't know if The Visitor is as good a film as The Omen (ok, I know that obviously it's not) but on balance it's probably got its heart more in the right place. Perhaps notably along those lines, one of the horror subplots of The Omen involves possibility of a woman getting an abortion, whereas The Visitor explores the possibility of a woman being impregnated against her will. While it may lose out on form, The Visitor might just win the long game on its politics.
Also some shitty teens get thrown through a plate glass window, and there's a whole sequence where a big truck's lights are treated exactly like an approaching spacecraft, and it's awesome, I don't know what to tell you, I love this shit.

Animals (1977)
Here are my thoughts on the album a lot of people call an underrated gem: Animals!
Disclaimer: I have not read Animal Farm before, so some of the references here may have flown over my head. Also, this is a complete first-time reaction! I have never heard any of these songs before! (Not like with other albums I wrote my thoughts on where I definitely did hear at least one song before listening to the entire album)
What I do know about Animal Farm is that it compares human behavior to animals, with the pigs being in charge of all the other animals.
And also this quote: “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”
Let’s get into it!

1. Pigs on the Wing, Part 1
The acoustic guitar intro is very lovely! This reminds me a lot of Wish You Were Here. The lyrics here are also really interesting so far!
2. Dogs
The acoustic guitar and keyboard here are really lovely so far!! I also really really like the melody here! The singing is so good here by David!!! The guitar solo is also really, really good and melancholy/angry sounding! The lyrics are also so interesting as well! The echo effect on David’s voice is so good as well with the 3rd verse! And the synth and guitar riff shortly after are so good as well! Then there’s a sudden tempo that is so good!!! The melody is still just so freaking catchy and amazing! The guitar solo after is so incredible as well! The dog barking sound effects are also an interesting touch! The occasional mellotron is also a nice touch! The next guitar solo is also just simply divine! The switch up in instrumentals in the 5th verse is also so freaking cool! And then we get this ominous thumping sound from the drums! Almost as if the person being “dragged down by the stone” is trying to walk with the weight! The vocoder and synths used here in this spacy interlude are so interesting as well!! And then we get back to the groovy acoustic guitar! Then we get another really interesting set of lyrics about trying to break free from an oppressive system as a former dog (who is loyal without questioning things to society; I also love the reference here to the Who’s Tommy with the lyric deaf, dumb, and blind)! And then a simply divine and ominous guitar solo happens along with some beautiful, airy synths! The last few guitar solos honestly really remind me of Brian May from Queen because of how high and emotional they are! This song feels so groovy and calm, but also so angry and dark as well (especially with the last verse of lyrics). It’s such an interesting mix! I was majorly dancing and grooving to this song the whole time! I was so amazed by this!! This song was so amazingly epic and cinematic, and I love how Roger and David sing different parts of the lyrics here! I also really love the vocal harmonies here as well! This whole song is just extremely powerful. One of my new favorite songs, definitely. What a way to start the album off!!
3. Pigs (Three Different Ones)
The keyboard intro is very interesting, along with the high bass line! Feels very prog rock-like (like stuff from early genesis), and then we get an ominous electric guitar riff! With the drums kicking in! I love Roger’s delivery here already! It’s so sassy and mocking; I love it! I really love how this sets the atmosphere up already! And I love the effect on the microphone when Roger starts singing the “you’re nearly a laugh” choruses; it reminds me a lot of the Beatles (specifically the effect used on John’s voice in a lot of songs from the Beatles’ psychedelic phase). And did I hear Roger use the f word???? Amazing. Especially since it shows how angry the person here is at the "pigs." Really puts an emphasis here on the dark and bitter and mocking tone of the song (swearing in music back then was really uncommon, especially use of the f word). And the guitar solo here after with the cool effect is so cool as well! Not to mention the cowbell in the chorus is so cool as well! And wait... is that a talk box solo after the guitar solo???? That’s so amazing!!! I love talk boxes, so this is such a unique and cool addition! Especially since it sounds like a pig squealing (really fitting the song's lyrics and title). I also love the lyrics here about “capitalist pigs," the top bosses of the capitalist system! I also just adore the bass line here in this song, especially in the third verse! And then we get a really freaking good and powerful guitar solo after this last hard hitting verse, and am I hearing a bass solo as well there in the background with the guitar solo!?!?!? This ending is honestly the best part of the song! Also has to be one of my new favorites from Pink Floyd omgggggg This song was so epic in scale as well, like the previous song!

4. Sheep
I adore the smooth keyboard intro here already!! And then we get an ominous and really good bass line as well! This already sets up a really cool mood! It kind of reminds me of One of These Days. And then the drums hit, along with a simply groovy beat drop! I love how the vocals here deteriorate/fade into the synths! And I like the social commentary lyrics here as well about mindlessly following society! And then we get this simply divine and spacy interlude (and wait, I just heard vocals from dogs there in the background!!! How cool is that as a callback??) and then we get a really great keyboard solo along with a simply groovy part you can’t help but dance to! I just adore the bass line of this song as well!! This album has so many good bass moments... and then we get a really ominous interlude again with the bass and keyboard as well as this really ominous and creepy vocoder speech by the “sheep” trying to take over the "dogs." Then it cuts back to the groovy part of this song! And then we get this really powerful guitar solo after the last verse! Along with a simplistic yet amazing bass line! This song as well is just so groovy and energetic, yet carries a very dark vibe as well! I liked it a lot, but not as much as dogs and pigs.

5. Pigs on the Wing, Part 2
I love how the lyrics here change from the previous part to reflect how the person now carries more empathy than before to “you” and how the insecurities faded from the first part (now the person here knows that you care for them and that they care for you, despite the cruel and unfair society they live in, and that they need to be careful about the upper class/powerful “pigs” that control society).

In general, this album really surprised and amazed me in a very good way! I was surprised at just how groovy these songs are! I was dancing the whole time while listening and looking at the lyrics. I also just love how epic this album felt and how all the songs carried a very dark vibe as well, along with the danceability. My favorites off this album have to be dogs and pigs, with dogs definitely being my favorite! That song did not feel like 17 minutes at all! In general, this album was so exciting, and there was not a single boring moment in it! The lyrics are just exceptional and hard hitting as well, breaking down our society into pigs who rule everything, the dogs that enforce their rules and are loyal to the pigs, and the sheep that follow the rules mindlessly. This has to be a new favorite album of mine! Putting this after DSOTM in my favorite Pink Floyd albums list (1. Wish You Were Here, 2. Meddle, 3. DSOTM, 4. Animals). Next up is the big one: The Wall! I honestly don’t know if I should write my thoughts on it, since I really want to focus on the story of this album and not on writing down my thoughts... This means it will probably be a while before I put my thoughts on the Wall here... I may not even write down my thoughts since this album is very difficult to tackle in terms of lyrics and analysis and all that. I will see what my verdict will be on this album!

if you insist on playing country music so loud i can hear it anywhere on my own yard can you make it like
at least actual music
country music today is apparently just a guy in a twangy voice saying signifiers with no context over a flat guitar backing
that was seriously two songs in a row whose lyrics were literally just
"A little bit of guitar, a little bit of truck A little bit of hound dog and a little bit of luck A little bit of bacon, a little bit of beans"
and
"From her cowboy boots to her down home roots She's country From the song she plays to the prayer she prays That's the way she was born and raised She ain't afraid to stay Country"
these aren't lyrics, these aren't song lyrics, these are just surface level signifiers being read out in a list holy shit
it's like if prog-rock had lyrics that were just
"Frodo and hobbits, elves and spaceships psychedelic drugs and alien dolphins Roger Dean's art and a kaleidoscope an elephant with really long legs and maybe we're riding a hot air balloon that talks"
it's like if death metal had lyrics that were just
"Death, killing, blood, darkness Scary things, angry things, growling, growling Blood and also dead bodies and people dying when you die you turn into a dead body and lose all your blood violently"
okay nevermind those are incredible lyrics for a death metal song what's that awful AI website that turns lyrics into songs i need to go load those in and see what it does with them

BS Theory no. 2: The “Dark Side of the Moon” is Society™️
“There is no dark side of he moon really. Matter of fact, it’s all dark”
Hey guys, I am back from my essay-writing hiatus, as I’ve recently had the time to have some Ideas circulating in my brain. One of the things I’ve been thinking about, and been able to formulate into something semi-comprehensible, is on the matter of Pink Floyd’s seminal work, the 1973 album Dark Side of the Moon. This album is far from being a niche, obscure album: it’s one of the best selling records of all time, and you have more than likely seen the album cover on t-shirts, posters, pins, stickers, or referenced in other media. The album kicks of what I will refer to the “main sequence” in Pink Floyd’s discography, which consists of their 4-best selling albums: DSOTM, Wish You Were Here, Animals (underrated tbh), and The Wall. All of these are indeed concept albums to varying degrees, with most being a Level Two Concept Album, and The Wall generally being classified as a rock opera (Level 3). With this in mind, Dark Side of the Moon most people would likely classify this album as a Level One, due to only a musical concept being present (all the songs flow into each other, and the album loops back on itself), however I argue that it is a Level Two due to there being multiple thematic concepts that may not be immediately apparent: society’s affect on mental health due to modern lifestyles.
I won’t go into too much background on the band itself, as they’re one of the most popular bands in the prog fandom, to the point where it could be argued that they are their own fandom (they even have their own confessions blog), just that they were formed in the mid-1960s, and had a substantial psychedelic rock/pop following before this album’s debut. I will note that the theme of mental illness has been greatly present in many of their works, as one of their former members, Roger "Syd" Barrett, suffered through an undisclosed mental health episode, which had him leave the band. As this is the case, it is not much of a stretch to assume that this work deals heavily with mental health issues as well.
One of the theories suggested, by Drew and Destin of the Prog Notes podcast (which I HIGHLY recommend) is that the album’s thematic concept is about all the different things in life that can cause a person mental stress. This theory begins with “On the Run”, as they suggest the first two songs are about beginning life. The theory proposes that “on the Run” is about the fear or anxiety of trave and moving on, “Time” is about… time, or rather realizing that one’s time is limited, “the Great Gig in the Sky” is about death anxiety, “Money” is about financial and material concerns, “Us and Them” is about conflict, and the last two songs “Brain Damage” and “Eclipse” are about finally breaking under the pressure of modern life. This would mean that the “dark side of the moon” referenced in the title could be all the downsides to modern life that are too taboo to talk about, or are perhaps hidden from public consciousness.
Honestly, I agree with their interpretation of the album. I do think, however, there’s some loose ends that need to be tied up with their series. For example, if their interpretation is the case, why would Pink Floyd have the album loop back on itself? What’s the symbolism of the heart beat pulse? Why do all the songs flow into each other? How do these things enhance the themes of the album? Why did Pink Floyd specifically choose these common anxieties (travel, time, death, money, and conflict)?
Let’s address each of these questions individually:
The case of the album loop:
Following the interpretation that the album is about society and the taboo of mental health related to common stressors, the album looping back on itself could symbolize one of two things. One could be the metal health cycle of relapse-breakdown-recovery, until one slowly spirals or until they finally reach a state of recovery. The other could be that this is something that happens to multiple people as a result of system we live in. People get broken down by their insecurities, by fear and anxiety and hate, and there’s no clear answer to stop it. This could also be tied into the heart-beat pulse that can be heard both at the very beginning of the album, and at the end, which could represent all the people being born and living out their lives under these stressors.
The flow:
As commonly noted about the album, each song flows into each other so well that the album often feels like one long song. This could represent the way stress about one area of your life can impact all the others: anxiety about time, for example, could impact the way one views their own mortality, the way they feel about travel, the way they feel about financial concerns, and the way they feel about conflict. Simply put, most of the time, when a person is stressed about something, it causes them to be more easily upset and stressed by other things as well, causing a cycle.
Common Anxieties:
As for why these common fears and stressors were chosen can be left up for debate. The most likely reason, in my opinion, is because they’re endemic to the human experience in modern society. Almost everyone has been stressed, in one way or another, about moving on and change, about the passage of time, about their own mortality and what happens when we die, about financial security and greed, and about conflict. These are the things that can cause people to go, as the album states, “mad”.
So, what is the “dark side of the moon”? Is it all dark? The “dark side” referred to in the album’s title (and the quote played at the very end of the album) refers to all the things that stress people out in modern society that we keep hidden from each other, just how the view of the far side of the moon is hidden from view from the Earth. The moon, in a lot of Western mythology, is associated with emotions, and the “dark side” could be associated with negative emotions. As for it being “all dark”, that’s a question that one has to answer for oneself. Either way, when viewed through this lens, Dark Side of the Moon’s meaning becomes apparent, and remains insightful commentary about the world we live in. (also, for Prog Notes, you can find them on Spotify and apple Podcast for sure! You’d have to check about other streaming services though!)

I know some of y'all's tastes, but I'd love to know what everyone's favourite bands/artists/musical genres are. <3
Tough question to ask! For some of these we've gone for vibes more than solid genres; since we're all parts of what should be one personality, we're like a group of people that grew up together. So we've kind of narrowed it down to what music makes us think "X would like this" or "this is X's vibe", as well as a few songs they (sometimes exclusively) like. Terry Moods: Duality, contradiction, mix of soft & harsh sounds, pass the aux cord at your peril because it's going to get weird Genres: Experimental, Glitch, Prog Rock, House Music, Nu Disco, Vaporwave, Outsider Music Examples: Deuteronomy - Clair De Lune Pink Floyd - Brain Damage Blank Banshee - Eco Zones
Chaos Moods: Psychedelic, Chaotic, Bassy, bouncing-off-the-wall madness Genres: Hair Metal, Bass Music, Moombahton, Drum & Bass, Jungle, Plunderphonics Examples: Bassnectar feat. Amp Live - Ugly The Prodigy - No Good (Start The Dance) Extreme - Play With Me Taffy Moods: "Spacey" vibes, themes of isolation, distance, and nature Genres: Braindance, Psychedelic Rock, Prog Rock, Prog House, Ambient Examples: Greenhouse - levällään David Bowie - Space Oddity Peter Gabriel - Down To Earth Andy Moods: Hyperactive, colorful, happy and nostalgic Genres: Speedcore, Happy Hardcore, Chiptune, Bubblegum Pop, Rock Examples: Anamanaguchi - Endless Fantasy Furries In A Blender - Wind Me Up Galactikraken - Best Band In The Universe Roy Moods: Lust, anger, violence, dark and moody, lyrics about yearning to be understood Genres: Dubstep, Power Metal, Harsh Noise, Neurofunk, Metalcore Examples: Bring Me The Horizon - Can You Feel My Heart Powerwolf - The Sacrament Of Sin Cookie Monsta - Mosh Pit VIP Dagwood Moods: Party time! Anything that's catchy or good to sing along to; happy, nostalgic, with a sense of bringing people together Genres: Pop, Parody, Electro Swing, Jazz Examples: Dexys Midnight Runners - Come On Eileen Lionel Hampton - It Don't Mean a Thing (Jazz Reconstruction Club Mix) Weird Al Yankovic - My Bologna Martin Moods: Simple and comforting; songs that are good to sing along to or emphasize a sense of togetherness, simplicity, and nostalgia. Genres: Indie, Melodic Pop, Europop Examples: Sleeping At Last - North Sigur Ros - Hoppipolla ABBA - Mamma Mia Vivien Moods: A sense of longing, or waiting for better times. Also likes songs that are good to sing along to, maybe to overcome those feelings that form the "basis" of their tastes. Genres: Synth Pop, Alternative, Britpop, Disco, Glam Rock Examples: Gorillaz - Melancholy Hill Coldplay - Paradise Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Black Summer Jenova Moods: Soft acoustic guitar and drums, soft lyrics, magical and fey-like Genres: Alternative, Indie, Pop, Folk Examples: Nirvana - Something In The Way Dodie - Ready Now Loreena McKennitt - The Mummers' Dance Thirteen Moods: Heartbreak, loneliness, distance, but with a hopeful tone Genres: Alternative, Pop, Geek Rock, Prog Rock, Jazz Fusion Examples: The Cure - Just Like Heaven Ludo - Drunken Lament Journey - Faithfully

So, if I wanted to get started listening to prog rock, where should I start?
Full disclosure, I'm asking because I keep returning to the RWBY soundtrack as my ongoing background noise and that's always described as prog
My friend... you've picked a good berk to ask.
So the gateway I usually suggest is Dark Side of the Moon, by Pink Floyd. It's very approachable, and there really isn't a bad track on the list.

Or, barring that, Rush's Moving Pictures.
youtube
Or, for a less morally repugnant choice, Genesis' Selling England by the Pound.
youtube
Past those you have my favorite - The Moody Blues' Long Distance Voyager. Really, most of their output was gold, but LDV was my lullaby every single night when I was in junior high, so I'm biased.

The Court of the Crimson King is, according to the Venture Brothers, capable of pushing a super-scientist to supervillainy early in their career. I believe it. This one's polarizing as HELL, either you love it or you hate it.
Tommy is the first rock opera, and it arguably fits in here.
youtube
Other seminal prog albums: Aqualung by Jethro Tull The Yes Album by Yes Trilogy by Emerson, Lake and Palmer Crime of the Century by Supertramp The Trick of the Tail by Genesis Leftoverture by Kansas
And lastly, the TV Tropes page, which has ALL kinds of info on the genre and breaks it down into subgenres with examples.
