at some point it's just like. do they even fucking like the thing they're asking AI to make? "oh we'll just use AI for all the scripts" "we'll just use AI for art" "no worries AI can write this book" "oh, AI could easily design this"
like... it's so clear they've never stood in the middle of an art museum and felt like crying, looking at a piece that somehow cuts into your marrow even though the artist and you are separated by space and time. they've never looked at a poem - once, twice, three times - just because the words feel like a fired gun, something too-close, clanging behind your eyes. they've never gotten to the end of the movie and had to arrive, blinking, back into their body, laughing a little because they were holding their breath without realizing.
"oh AI can mimic style" "AI can mimic emotion" "AI can mimic you and your job is almost gone, kid."
... how do i explain to you - you can make AI that does a perfect job of imitating me. you could disseminate it through the entire world and make so much money, using my works and my ideas and my everything.
and i'd still keep writing.
i don't know there's a word for it. in high school, we become aware that the way we feel about our artform is a cliche - it's like breathing. over and over, artists all feel the same thing. "i write because i need to" and "my music is how i speak" and "i make art because it's either that or i stop existing." it is such a common experience, the violence and immediacy we mean behind it is like breathing to me - comes out like a useless understatement. it's a cliche because we all feel it, not because the experience isn't actually persistent. so many of us have this ... fluttering urgency behind our ribs.
i'm not doing it for the money. for a star on the ground in some city i've never visited. i am doing it because when i was seven i started taking notebooks with me on walks. i am doing it because in second grade i wrote a poem and stood up in front of my whole class to read it out while i shook with nerves. i am doing it because i spent high school scribbling all my feelings down. i am doing it for the 16 year old me and the 18 year old me and the today-me, how we can never put the pen down. you can take me down to a subatomic layer, eviscerate me - and never find the source of it; it is of me. when i was 19 i named this blog inkskinned because i was dramatic and lonely and it felt like the only thing that was actually permanently-true about me was that this is what is inside of me, that the words come up over everything, coat everything, bloom their little twilight arias into every nook and corner and alley
"we're gonna replace you". that is okay. you think that i am writing to fill a space. that someone said JOB OPENING: Writer Needed, and i wrote to answer. you think one raindrop replaces another, and i think they're both just falling. you think art has a place, that is simply arrives on walls when it is needed, that is only ever on demand, perfect, easily requested. you see "audience spending" and "marketability" and "multi-line merch opportunity"
and i see a kid drowning. i am writing to make her a boat. i am writing because what used to be a river raft has long become a fully-rigged ship. i am writing because you can fucking rip this out of my cold dead clammy hands and i will still come back as a ghost and i will still be penning poems about it.
it isn't even love. the word we use the most i think is "passion". devotion, obsession, necessity. my favorite little fact about the magic of artists - "abracadabra" means i create as i speak. we make because it sluices out of us. because we look down and our hands are somehow already busy. because it was the first thing we knew and it is our backbone and heartbreak and everything. because we have given up well-paying jobs and a "real life" and the approval of our parents. we create because - the cliche again. it's like breathing. we create because we must.
you create because you're greedy.
#every time someones like ''AI will replace u" im like. u will have to fucking KILL ME#there is no replacement here bc i am not filling a position. i am just writing#and the writing is what i need to be doing#writeblr#this probably doesn't make sense bc its sooo frustrating i rarely speak it the way i want to#edited for the typo wrote it and then was late to a meeting lol#i love u people who mention my typos genuinely bc i don't always catch them!!!! :) it is doing me a genuine favor!!!#my friend says i should tell you ''thank you beta editors'' but i don't know what that means#i made her promise it isn't a wolf fanfiction thing. so if it IS a wolf thing she is DEAD to me (just kidding i love her)#hey PS PS PS ??? if ur reading this thinking what it's saying is ''i am financially capable of losing this'' ur reading it wrong#i write for free. i always have. i have worked 5-7 jobs at once to make ends meet.#i did not grow up with access or money. i did not grow up with connections or like some kind of excuse#i grew up and worked my fucking ASS OFF. and i STILL!!! wrote!!! on the side!!! because i didn't know how not to!!!#i do not write for money!!!! i write because i fuckken NEED TO#i could be in the fucking desert i could be in the fuckken tundra i could be in total darkness#and i would still be writing pretentious angsty poetry about it#im not in any way saying it's a good thing. i'm not in any way implying that they're NOT tryna kill us#i'm saying. you could take away our jobs and we could go hungry and we could suffer#and from that suffering (if i know us) we'd still fuckin make art.#i would LOVE to be able to make money doing this! i never have been able to. but i don't NEED to. i will find a way to make my life work#even if it means being miserable#but i will not give up this thing. for the whole world.

Hypothermia of the Soul
Also on AO3 [210w] @corrieweek - day 6: Force-sensitive clones @ailesswhumptober - day 9: hypothermia
It takes a few weeks for Fox to truly notice, but Coruscant is cold.
It shouldn’t be. Between the climate-controlled atmosphere and his temperature regulating armour he should spend his whole deployment in a comfortably human-standard environment. Yet somehow, a chill has crept its way in to settle against his bones.
Nothing seems to touch it.
Exertion or external heat sources leave him flushed and sweating without doing anything to thaw the icy numbness inside.
Blankets are more variable. The thin mass-produced ones of the medbay and barracks offer bare protection even against more physical drafts. Wrapping himself in the bright patchwork quilts made from scavenged cloth and thread, however, is enough to offer at least the illusion of warmth.
Body heat seems to be the only effective cure. A warm line pressed against his side, even through armour, and he is sagging against the vod beside him. An arm around his shoulders and a face buried in a neck – theirs or his own – and everything else fades away.
The cold is only truly banished when Fox finds himself buried in the middle of a vod-pile, limbs tangled together, the whole mass shifting to the rhythm of calm breaths. He sinks into the sensation like a warm bath.

As another storm rolls towards the West Coast, I'm reminded of this shoot I had the pleasure of doing with Kindra Nikole back in 2016.
I remember a sense of deep serenity as I knelt in the woods, the sounds all muffled by a thick layer of snow, my breath damp in the air.
I remember the almost giddy chaos as we fled from that place, fingers too stiff to even remove the plate as we jumped in the car, a blizzard hot on our heels.
It's a memory I hope to hold for a lifetime, and yet there's also a dark side to this piece, for to this day this photo has been the most plagiarized, and copied without credit piece of artwork I've ever helped create.
Since its conception, I've seen people trace this image only to use it on the front cover of published books without consent. I've seen people create fake WIP videos trying to claim credit for the creation of my own face, and before this new year was even a week old it was brought to my attention that once again someone deemed it appropriate to replicate this image without ever giving credit to myself or the photographer for the inspiration.
In a world where the way of life for an artist is already being threatened by AI, there's an extra sting to seeing a person deliberately taking credit for work that isn't theirs, especially when they claim to be a supporter.
So with that I just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU to the true artists out there who persevere.
To those with decorum who know there is no shame in replicating or studying someone's works as long as the proper consent and credit are given.
To those who continue to create, knowing that they're up against AI programs and fellow humans that would steal their work, only to make them compete against their own talent and hard work in an already difficult field.
Thank you to those who go forward, because creating art is who they are, even with these threats, because to create is to breathe.
In the end I believe those who truly love art will know. They'll see past the mimics and the copies, and support those who create from the heart.
So Thank You all. Your bravery and unwavering perseverance is an inspiration, and something I hope to replicate in years to come.
If you'd like to see more of Kindras work I highly recommend checking out her website at http://www.kindranikole.com/
Thank you for staying with me on this long post.
Stay safe and warm this weekend. ❤️

I doodled Dark Side last night and posted it on Twitter, but was too tired to post it here, so now I'm doing it. He's a favourite for very obvious reasons.
I think he's pretty underrated in this community if I'm being honest.
(Also, random off topic thing here, but if you're an artist, put your signature/watermark on your art, no matter what. It can be a low effort doodle like this drawing, but you still should put your signature/watermark on because people are automatically feeding your art to AI bots to generate "art". I don't know about Tumblr, but I know damn well that this is what's happening on Twitter. I just remembered this all of a sudden while looking at the stupid signature on this doodle, lol.)

Safety Line
Also on AO3 [540w] @ailesswhumptober - day 3: shared trauma, survivor guilt; alt 2: co-dependency In the Catching AU; the war pushes all the Jedi to Fall at some point, so their troopers learn how to bring them back to the Light
The first time Plo Koon Fell, he was almost too late.
Too late, certainly, for the majority of the 104th. Falling beneath the Malevolence’s surprise attack while the lucky few scrambled for the lifepods.
Too late, also, for most of those. Sitting helplessly as the droids hunted them, cracking their pods open like koja nuts, one after another after another after another, until they dared to extinguish those final precious lights right in front of him…
His whole focus narrows to the last of his troopers – Wolffe. Sinker. Boost. – beside him. He did nothing to save the rest of his command, the lives entrusted into his care, but he will save these. Whatever it takes, he will do it. Whatever the cost, he will pay it.
Plo Koon Falls.
---
The first time Commander Wolffe Catches his General, he is almost not enough.
He doesn’t know enough. It is early in the war, still, and they are only in the beginning stages of understanding the risks of Falling, of sharing symptoms and remedies. With his General’s tell-tale eyes hidden, it takes him too long to even realise how his General is struggling.
He doesn’t… care enough. He feels hollowed out, burned. He has been trained to handle loss of course, and this is hardly his first campaign, but the sheer scale… He is too busy trying to hold himself together to worry that his General’s bad mood might have a deeper cause. He tries to retreat into autopilot only to find that most of his usual duties no longer exist
Instead, his focus narrows and he clings. Clings to Sinker and Boost, vode he had spoken a bare handful of words to previously but are now all he has left, struggling not to panic whenever they are out of his sight. Clings to his General, his saviour, his anchor; following him to the Temple, and staying there with him through the seemingly-endless debriefings, and processing, and waiting for whatever happens next.
They do not know how to help their General, barely know how to help themselves, but just their presence is enough. In the safety of the Temple, Koon’s desperate desire to protect calms into the desire to help them heal. And in the process of finding peace to offer them, he manages to find peace for himself.
They Catch each other, and the quartet makes their way, battered but whole, back into the Light.
------
Before they leave Coruscant to collect the new 114th – half new troopers from Kamino, half the remains of a battalion whose General’s luck was worse (or perhaps better) than their own – the General offers to adopt Wolffe and Sinker and Boost.
He admits, before they can respond, that this is an idea that formed in those first days after Abregado, when the Dark drove him to take any measures necessary to keep from suffering the pain of further loss. But he also admits that he has continued to meditate on the idea in the weeks since, ensuring that the offer is no longer rooted in attachment but in a genuine desire for the happiness of all parties. He wants this, purely and wholeheartedly, if they want it too.
The 104th, all that are left, accept.
