It’s dark, and it needs work. But, it’s got some great features, and the real estate ad says it can possibly be used for a business (noooooo, not an office!). This 1900 Victorian is located in Macomb, Illinois, has 3bd. 2.5ba, and is listed for only $107K. Give it a look.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first thing we see as we enter is beautiful original wood & floors. I would like to see what’s under that carpet and the wood wall looks like it’s been stripped and re-stained, so it needs some sealer.
Tumblr media
You can just see a glimpse of the beautiful ceiling millwork.
Tumblr media
Wow, gorgeous fireplace. Also, the carpet really matches the wallpaper. It could stay awhile.
Tumblr media
Look at the fabulous floors. Love that.
Tumblr media
Windows w/original wood- look at that dental crown molding! I don’t think that the tiny corbels are original, though.
Tumblr media
Gold ceiling, medallion and beautiful chandelier. Love the door and columns. It’s dark, but there’s some lovely millwork on the right.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another original door, ceiling beams, and a cool light fixture. Love the walls, too. Must be the dining room.
Tumblr media
You can see that gorgeous fireplace from here and look at the size of the crown molding.
Tumblr media
Wow, the windows in the turret out front. Look at the beautifully detailed crown molding.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hmmm...looks like a picnic bench up there. Don’t like the kitchen, it’s a dated reno, but it’s not urgent. It’s still a useable kitchen for now. Plus, the appliances are new.
Tumblr media
This bathroom has been painted over, and it would look great with reproduction Victorian plumbing fixtures.
Tumblr media
There’s a lot of wallpaper in this house. Some of it should be removed, which is a lot of work.
Tumblr media
The hall to the bedrooms still has the original gas light fixture on the wall.
Tumblr media
Not lovin’ the shower, but the pedestal sink is cool.
Tumblr media
This bd. needs some sprucing up.
Tumblr media
Bd. set up as a family room. Loving all the original doors.
Tumblr media
Why do they keep it so dark? Open the shades. Looks like a nice new floor in here.
Tumblr media
Is that a grapevine? I LOVE grapevines. My grandparents had one and I couldn’t get enough of those sweet Concord grapes.
Tumblr media
Nice little porch on the back.
Tumblr media
Large yard with a garage.
Tumblr media
Oh, how can you resist this? Look at how pretty she is. I hope an office doesn’t buy it, it needs to stay a house.

Creative and Functional Kitchen Window Ideas for 2023
Natural light is essential for a well-designed kitchen. It can add visual interest to the space, help to accentuate existing design features, and enhance the overall mood of the room.
A little creative window treatment can go a long way in making the best use of natural light. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite creative and functional kitchen window ideas for 2023.
Curtains
Curtains are a creative and functional kitchen window idea that can be used to create a sense of privacy or to block out the sun. They can also add a unique style to the room depending on what materials and design they are made from.
Choosing the right color and pattern can help make the space look more spacious and brighter. You can go with light, cool colors to brighten a smaller space or dark, warm colors to make an oversized space feel more generous.
Blinds
Blinds are one of the most creative and functional kitchen window ideas that you can use to transform your space. They bring color, texture and pattern to a room, and they can also be used for privacy.
You can also use curtains for a similar purpose, however, they aren’t as practical in the kitchen.
If you are looking for something that will stand up to the daily grind of cooking, opt for durable materials such as faux wood blinds and shutters. These options are easy to wipe down and will not warp, crack or fade in the sun.
Awning
Awnings have been around for centuries and come in all shapes and sizes. These aesthetically pleasing structures are designed to protect your property from the elements, as well as provide a fun and functional way to enhance your outdoor living space.
While the most common material used for awnings is a woven fabric, they can also be made from acrylic fibres which are spun and dyed in a similar manner to wool. These fabrics offer a good balance of strength and insulation to keep your home or business toasty warm.
Corbels
Corbels can be a creative and functional kitchen window idea that is also versatile enough to be used throughout the home. They come in various shapes, sizes and materials.
The most common are wood, although polyurethane and plaster-like corbels also provide a decorative element for your kitchen.
They can add a touch of hand-carved detail to your kitchen design while supporting items that might be heavy, like a shelf or counter. They can be painted or stained to match your cabinetry.
Shelves
Kitchen shelves are a creative and functional kitchen window idea that provides storage and display space in a beautiful way. They allow you to keep ingredients, utensils and cookware within easy reach while adding a modern touch to your kitchen design.
They’re also a great solution for spaces that have small windows or are unable to fit full cabinets in. This allows you to maximize storage without losing visual space, which can be a major benefit for smaller kitchens.
Side Sconces
If you’re looking for a creative and functional kitchen window idea, side sconces might be the right choice. These simple fixtures mount flush to the wall and can add a layer of flattering light to any space, while also providing an easy way to compensate for areas that aren’t evenly lit by your overhead lighting.
A few different styles of side sconces are available, so it’s important to pick one that best suits your needs. Flush style sconces tend to have a minimalistic, pared-down aesthetic that works well in contemporary spaces.
Valances
Valances can be a creative and functional kitchen window idea that can help you achieve the look of your dream home. They can be used to cover up wall imperfections, tie in architectural elements and even conceal hardware.
A simple swag of fabric can also add a bright and decorative statement to your windows. These swags can be made of a variety of fabrics and colors.
Tie-up valances are great for a farmhouse or cottage country kitchen because they are simple and easy to care for. They are also a good option if you want to keep your windows looking neat and tidy.

Frequently Asked Questions
In the kitchen, where should a refrigerator be?
A refrigerator should be placed next to the sink for easy access. It should not block traffic, nor be too close or too far from the stove.
Where do I start when planning a kitchen?
There are many options available, no matter whether you’re remodeling an existing space or designing your dream kitchen.
Spend some time looking for inspiration online before you start. Take a look at photos of kitchens you like. Keep track of design ideas. Take some time to write down your ideas and then sit down with a pen.
Now think about how to improve on these spaces. What could you make better? What would be your contribution? Do you need to be creative? Why not ask someone who understands the topic?
Once you’ve determined what you want to do, it’s time you start. Start with the basics. Get rid of any extra clutter. Don’t keep appliances that aren’t being used frequently. Replace worn-out fixtures with new ones.
Next, take a look at areas of your kitchen that are too small. This can be as simple as looking for areas that are too small to store or have no countertops. You can think of ways to maximize these spaces. They could become wine cellars or pantries.
Don’t forget to consider lighting. Is there an area that could be lit brighter? A wall sconce might brighten up dark corners.
Once you’ve completed your list of improvements, the fun part comes: implementing them!
Don’t be discouraged if you don’t know everything the first time. You can just keep going until you have it all figured. You will never be satisfied unless you love using it every day.
What is a reasonable budget for a Metro Vancouver kitchen remodel?
Metro Vancouver kitchen remodels are feasible with a budget of $50,000. This would include new appliances, countertops and cabinets, flooring, as well as lighting.
Can you DIY a Kitchen Renovation
Do you want to renovate your kitchen? While the answer is yes, there are some things that you need to keep in mind.
First, a kitchen remodeling project can be very time-consuming. Before you start, it is important to be proficient in plumbing and carpentry. You will also need to determine what parts of the kitchen you wish to modify, including adding storage space, replacing outdated appliances, and improving lighting.
Once you’ve planned your kitchen renovation, it’s time to start shopping for materials. You will need to make a decision about cabinets, countertops, flooring and appliances.
This is an excellent idea. This will allow for you to decide how much space you require and what layout would work best in the kitchen.
You have many options when it comes down to cabinets. You can choose from ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets or custom cabinets. RTA cabinets come in various styles and colours and are usually less expensive than custom cabinets.
It is essential that you ensure safety and security during large-scale renovations. You may want to look into the local building codes in order to make sure that you are compliant with any renovations.
You may feel tempted to tackle large-scale renovations on your own. However, professional help is highly recommended. A qualified contractor will help you save both money and time. Plus, working alongside a professional will ensure that your project runs smoothly.
What is the first step when designing a kitchen remodel?
This is a difficult question to answer because every kitchen remodeling project is different. Each one will require a different approach. It is essential to have a clear understanding of your unique goals and needs before designing a new kitchen.
This may involve meeting with a professional designer or architect to discuss your ideas, taking measurements of your current kitchen space, and/or creating a mood board or inspiration folder with images of kitchens that appeal to you.
Once you have a sense of what you want, it is time to start planning your budget. Finally, creating a timeline for your kitchen renovation is crucial to stay on track and avoiding any stressful surprises.
If you’re working with a professional kitchen designer or architect, they will likely take the lead in the design planning process. However, it’s still vital that you are clear about your goals and needs from the start. This will ensure that the final design meets your expectations and that the result is satisfying.
Take into account the area of your kitchen, such as its square footage and the dimensions for individual areas, such as countertops, cabinets or appliances. It would be best if you also noted any existing structural elements that cannot be removed, such as support beams or load-bearing walls. If possible, it can be helpful to create a floor plan layout so that you can visualize how the new design will come together.
An inspiration folder or mood board is a great way to narrow down your ideas for kitchen design. Pinterest is a fantastic resource for finding kitchen images you love. You can also pull out pages of magazines and collect paint chips or fabric swatches. These will serve as a reference point when you start planning your renovation.
Once you have a clear idea of how your new kitchen should look, it’s time for you to begin thinking about the timeline and budget. What budget are you willing and able to spend? What are your must and desirable-to-haves? When is the renovation due to be complete? Answering these questions will allow you to move forward in your planning process.
You’ll need to include the cost of materials such as cabinets, countertops and appliances if you decide to remodel your kitchen. The project’s time frame and potential disruptions to your life will also need to be considered. If you hire a contractor to complete the renovation, they will likely give you a detailed quote that includes all costs as well as a timeline.
To keep the project on track and avoid unexpected delays, you need to set a timeline. Once you have an idea about when each step should take place, you will be able to begin to plan a more detailed schedule. You should allow for some flexibility to accommodate unexpected delays.
Following these steps can help you develop a plan to renovate your kitchen. This will ensure you get the kitchen you have always wanted and that the whole process runs smoothly.
What are the drawbacks of an open-concept cooking style?
Privacy is the biggest issue. An open-concept kitchen means guests can see the mess. You might also find that guests may be disturbed by the smells of cooking. If there is no designated cooking or eating area, an open kitchen can be difficult to clean. Lastly, an open-concept kitchen may not be your best option if you don’t have much square footage.
What are the steps to remodelling a kitchen?
Plan your kitchen remodel. Decide on what you want, and how much.
Find a contractor. Compare bids from different contractors to find the one you feel most comfortable.
Demolition. This is the fun bit! Rip out the old cabinets, countertops, and appliances.
Installation. Installation.
Finishing touches. You can complete your kitchen remodel by adding finishing touches like new hardware or paint.
Statistics
According to Burgin, some hinges have this feature built-in, but it’s an add-on cost for other models of about $5 retail, adding up to $350 to $500 for an entire kitchen, depending on size. (hgtv.com)
Followed by cabinet cost, labour, and appliance costs consume 20 percent each of your budget. (hgtv.com)
Your most significant cost investment for a kitchen remodel will usually be cabinets, typically comprising 25 percent of your budget. (hgtv.com)
In large firms, the commission charged by the GC ranges from 15 to 25 percent of the total job cost. (thespruce.com)
Experts also recommend setting aside 20 percent of your budget for surprises, including unpleasant demolition discoveries. One is water damage, the electricity that is not up to code, or other budget-spiking gotchas. (hgtv.com)

Benefits Of Plastering
Tumblr media
Plaster is a building material used for internal wall and ceiling coating, protection, and decoration. Architectural mouldings like ceiling roses, cornices, corbels, and similar features can also be made with them.
Gypsum, lime, or cement combined with water and sand make up the most popular plaster varieties. Normally, plaster is produced as a dry powder, mixed with water and formed into a hard paste before being applied.
Plaster that has been handled in some way to create a textured surface instead of a flat one is called "stucco." For further details, see stucco.
Plaster-like render provides waterproofing qualities and is put on the outside of structures. For more details, see Rendering.
European Standards for Plastering
●      Rendering and plastering mortar are covered in Part 1 of the BS EN 998-1 Specification for Mortar for Masonry.
●      Plastering work, we can help with
●      Plasterboard installation on wood studs or dry-lining brick walls
●      Surface preparation with angle beading and bonding plaster
●      In preparation for decorating, inside walls and ceilings are skimmed.
●      Adjusting crooked walls or ceilings
●      Removing blown-out plaster and performing patchwork
●      Plaster decorative mouldings application
●      Restoration of damaged moulds already present
●      Applying bell cast beading, scratch coatings, and top coat render to exterior walls
The procedure of Plastering Work
1. Preparation of Surface for Plastering
2. Groundwork for Plaster
3. Applying Under Coat or Base Coat
4. Applying Finishing Coat
5. Curing of Plastering works
 Drying times for new plaster
●      Give enough time before painting.
●      Before being decorated, freshly plastered walls or ceilings must thoroughly dry. The amount of time it takes for the plaster to dry will depend on the surface it was applied to, the room's temperature, and the ventilation.
●      Normally, it takes two to three days for a skim of plaster placed on the plasterboard to completely dry. Even under ideal drying conditions, drying time, when applied to a base, such as bonding, may take up to a week.
●      Before embellishing, wait until the skim coat of plaster has completely turned from a dark brown to a much lighter pinkish-brown colour.
Thoughtful preparation
Our plasterers will take every precaution to safeguard your rooms and furniture. Before beginning work, they will assist in setting up the plastered rooms. Our tradespeople will remove electrical outlets, switches, and lighting fixtures.
A room that is being plastered should ideally be empty of all furniture and fixtures. Any furniture remaining in the space will be covered with plastic sheeting for protection. Additionally, carpets and floors will be covered.
Each of our professionals is capable of working rapidly to provide you with a high-quality result. They will work to minimise any disruption to your schedule and property during the process.
Conclusion
Our plasterers have years of experience and can handle any plastering project in London. Our plasterers are thorough and pay attention to the details that make a difference, whether it's preparation work, such as bonding or plaster boarding, exterior rendering, or applying a final skim coat in preparation for decorating.

The Flame and the Dragon Ch2
Chapter 2: The Dreamer
"Shit! Fuck! Dammit!" Kai growled as he once again reached the last page of the leather-bound novel he had been reading. He turned the last crisp leaf only to find the last page, telling that the Dragon Lord still had to find his true love, so yellowed with age and stained that it was beyond readability. No matter how many times he read his favorite story, it frustrated him to no end that the ending remained a well-kept secret. With expert care, he closed the antique book, being extra careful with the antiquarian treasure.
Gold claps and hinders lined the corners so the leather would not wear out too quickly.
Red, orange, white, and blue jewels were embedded into the twists of each corner, while a gold clasp with a leather strap kept the book locked when it wasn't being read. Gold patterns adorned the exquisite cover while faintly glowing letters spelled out the title. The spine was equally studded with gold corners binding it together and studded with dully-glowing jewels. The pages were aged and yellowed but worn in a way that made it clear the book was not only well-used but well-loved.
Running a hand through his spikey brown hair, he gently placed the book back in his bag.
Then he interlaced his hands behind his head before leaning back against the trunk of the tree he currently occupied in a laidback manner before gazing at the clear blue sky above him. The teen had tall, thick spiky brown hair, shaped like fire, and bright amber eyes that shined like burning embers. He had a focused expression on his face, with a scar visible on his right eyebrow and a bandage above his left. He wore a red half-zipped-up jacket over a white shirt with some kind of Japanese symbol on the back of the jacket and brown pants.
Nineteen-year-old Kai Smith closed his eyes with a contented sigh before happily trying to drift off to sleep.
He wanted to escape the shackles of life outside the wide acres of land and forest surrounding the small home he occupied with his beloved sibling. If only to escape for a moment.
"KAI!"
"AHH!" He cried out as the sudden noise caused Kai to bolt from his serenity, and momentarily forgetting where he was, he maneuvered to see what it was that had woken him. The sound of giggling from above forced his eyes open, and he came face to face with the adorable face and sweet, innocent smile of his younger adopted brother. He had long, blonde tousled hair, and brown arched eyebrows with bright emerald green eyes that many people would state could sometimes glow in the dark.
He wore a dark green jacket with a white t-shirt and black pants and black and dark green sneakers.
"Good morning!" Twelve-year-old Lloyd smiled down at his older brother with a wide, bright smile and innocent eyes cutely shut. "Sleep well?"
"I did," Kai smirked with a tone of mock irritation. "Until a certain someone conspired to kill me by knocking me out of a tree." He answered with a mock glare, but his brother simply burst into laughter before taking a step back. Recognizing the game, Kai smirked and took a step forward. Lloyd took another step back, but Kai was quick to follow him until finally Lloyd turned and sprinted. The chase had begun. Letting him have his fun, Kai let his little brother win for a moment before putting on a sudden burst of speed and tackling the child to the ground.
The two rolled around for a few minutes before finally collapsing in a field of colorful flowers in a heap of laughter.
"You have been a very, very naughty boy, Lloyd Montgomery Garmadon-Smith." Kai scolded playfully, wagging his finger in front of Lloyd's face as if punishing a small child. Lloyd pouted at this, succeeding only in making himself look cuter, but Kai had helped raise him and was immune to his little brother's tricks to getting out of trouble.
"Perhaps I should ask Nya if she could cook a veggie casserole for dinner instead of pizza?" He mused thoughtfully. Lloyd's reaction changed in an instant.
"No!" The younger boy squeaked in pure panic and quickly jumped to his feet. He tugged harshly on Kai's arms and ran around him to push him to his feet when that didn't work. "Let's go, please! We can go right now! I'll even carry everything home, I promise." He started saying quickly and desperately. It took all of Kai's willpower not to fall to the ground laughing at his brother's response.
"Alright, alright green bean, we'll go." Kai chuckled at his brother's relieved smile while reaching to retrieve the bag that he had lost during their play. "But you have to promise to behave." He added and Lloyd groaned in defeat but nodded, his love of seeing the town outweighing his pride. The siblings had moved to the sleepy town of Ignacia when Lloyd was eight and Kai and Nya had just turned fifteen. They had instantly begun rebelling against the role society had dictated for him.
The trio's father Ray, a retired blacksmith, had settled his family in the small town not long after the family lost their mother to illness.
When the Smiths first arrived in Ignacia, Maya, the trio's mother and a fantastic artist who was very talented with watercolors, and their father Ray shared a love of adventure and traveled around a lot, studying the different cultures they came across. They continued their adventurous life after they were married. They had settled down for a short time when they received the joyful news that Maya was pregnant with Kai and Nya. After the twins were born, the couple decided they wanted to adopt another.
It wasn't long before they adopted a one-year-old Lloyd.
Once Lloyd was old enough to travel, the family continued their adventurous lifestyle. Unfortunately, news of her mother's illness sent the family rushing back to Ninjago City for treatment, but sadly no medicine was enough to save her. Maya's dying wish to her children and husband was for them all to be happy and to never stop following their hearts. Shortly after, the remaining family members moved to the sleepy, provincial little town of Ignacia.
The town of Ignacia was built in a large glade of a mighty forest and was truly an ancient phenomenon.
Its appearance was matched by the backdrop of giant mountains which have helped shape the city into what it is today. The materials that these mountains brought were of great importance. The village itself looked elegant. With its seagrass rooftops, redwood walls, and native bird species, the place had a pleasant atmosphere. The main attraction in the town was the fountain, which was built thirty-nine years ago. Ignacia had an unhealthy economy, which was mainly supported by fletching, wood-crafting, and armorsmithing.
But their biggest strengths were sustainable hunting and advanced medicine.
In the town of Ignacia Ray set up a small shop selling glass objects, paintings, sculptures, and anything he could craft in his forge. Even though they were quite wealthy compared to the rest of the small town. It hadn't been too difficult for the family to settle into small-town life after almost four years of traveling. Nya, like their mother, adored all forms of art around the world, but she found the Japanese style of their home inspiring. Soon her own art flooded the shop.
As long as Nya had her art, she was happy.
Carefree and fun-loving, Lloyd found a new adventure in everything he could find and delighted in the woods and the fields around his home and the town and the many buildings. If he wasn't exploring, he was plotting to steal candy from the grown-ups. Kai, unfortunately, hadn't adjusted so easily. He missed those days. Traveling and seeing many exotic places and cultures, and learning about the world ever since the morning they came to this provincial, backwater town.
It was already mid-morning and the streets were alive with bustling people, carrying out identical routines to the rest of the week.
The smooth cobblestone streets lined the city, identical massive stones corbelled together. Identical red and brown houses on batches of dirt or elevate on hills lined both sides of the streets with windows for houses on top and shops on the bottom. They were smushed close together while stone chimneys lined each roof. An enormous wall surrounded the town, separating it from the lush woods and fields, already starting to change color in the late autumn.
Kai noticed every morning just the same.
The baker carried his tray like always, the aroma of baked goods filling the crisp autumn air as people opened up shop and carried out their daily routines. People were gathering their goods and running errands, the same routine, saying good morning and asking how they were and how their families were doing. Even though the Smiths were different, they were no exception.
"Good morning, Lloyd! Good morning Kai!" The baker called, carrying a tray of bread and rolls.
"Good morning!" Lloyd chimed and rushed over with Kai behind him. The child bounced from shop to shop, delighting in his favorite past time while Kai tried in vain to strike up a conversation with the baker.
"Where you off to?" The baker asked.
"The library," Kai answered. "I just finished the most amazing book about a spellcaster and–"
"That's nice." The baker replied, having clearly stopped listening after Kai said library and called to his assistant to finish making the croissants for the day. Kai rolled his amber eyes and called for Lloyd. They continued their stroll to the only real place Kai felt at home in the dull, little town. Already, townspeople began to gossip about them as he walked by.
"That boy is strange, no question." A group of gossiping old ladies muttered amongst themselves.
"He's always distracted."
"He's never part of any crowd." An aristocratic woman pointed out. "He's always by himself reading books."
"His head's in the clouds, all the time." An old man grunted.
"No denying he's a funny boy that Kai." A group of shoppers conversed amongst themselves, while men running shopped, bowed, and tipped their hats respectively to any woman who came by. Kai growled in annoyance as he heard the gossip. A caravan drove by, ignoring the two boys after the driver said the usual good day, while three teenage girls giggled like school girls when the brunette walked by.
"That boy is so peculiar."
"I wonder if he's feeling well?"
"He's too wild." A man said to his wife. It took all of Kai's will to not growl in frustration.
"He always has a dreamy far-off look on his face."
"If his nose isn't in a book, he's scribbling away in a notebook."
"He's so strange but special; it's a pity he doesn't fit in."
"Oh yes, he's ravishing isn't he?"
"Quite, he is a funny boy though."
"A beauty, but a funny boy."
"Very different from the rest of us."
"FSM take me now if I ever become part of this life!" Kai growled to the heavens, stomping his foot in frustration. His fists clenched whenever the words odd, strange, funny, or peculiar were mumbled over and over just like yesterday and the day before that. Every day was the same thing and he had half a mind to turn around and tell everyone in town to piss off and mind their own business. But he forced his tongue in check. He cared nothing that such an outburst would only warrant more disrespect from the town and they'd treat him even worse than he already was.
It was solely out of respect for his family that he kept his cool.
Kai had adored and respected both his parents. He, Nya, and Lloyd had been devastated when age robbed them of their beloved father. Shortly after the disease killed their mother, their father's broken heart followed her in death less than a year later. The town could say whatever they wished about him, but Kai would never forgive himself if he accidentally tarnished his parents' good name because of his inability to control his temper. That and he knew the only thing losing his temper would accomplish nothing.
Except the residents marching up to his house and complaining to Nya about how her twin brother was too wild and lacked discipline.
Quite frankly, Kai loved Nya too much to let her put up with their nonsense simply because she was Kai's twin. It simply wasn't worth it. Kai had never denied he was different from everyone else, even in his own bizarre family. But after years of traveling and seeing so many different cultures and places, his own mannerisms seemed minor in comparison. However, in this backwater town so pedestrian and old-fashioned, those simple characteristics were all the town seemed to care about.
Unlike most boys, he wanted to become a writer and travel rather than marry and inherit and run a vast estate.
Kai loathed the mannerisms that many considered normal, and as headstrong and outspoken as he was, wasn't afraid to voice it and for that, he was considered odd and freaky. Not that Kai cared, he'd long since ceased caring about what others here thought of him. But despite that, he truly wished someone would look beyond his looks and accept him for who he was. An individual and not another handsome boy bound for a wealthy marriage and was simply just too headstrong for his own good.
His sharp eyes barely caught his reflection in the glass of one of the shop windows when he and Lloyd stopped to gather the groceries on Nya's list.
He turned to meet the lovely boy staring back at him. People always said the twins were lovely like their parents. Nya possessed their father's charcoal black hair and their mother's ocean blue eyes. Her brother had their mother's brown hair, even though his hair was a lighter shade, and he had his father's burning amber eyes. Lloyd may have been young but Kai could already he was going to become a handsome young man. Kai was fully aware of his appearance and what others thought of him.
But in his mind and his normal standards, he wasn't beautiful or even handsome.
To be beautiful you had to be tall and lean like his mother or Nya, and you had to have a perfect tan and look like prince charming. Compared to Kai, Nya was a gorgeous princess and Lloyd was an angel, while Kai looked more like a damsel in distress masquerading as a boy. Yet while Kai didn't see the beauty in his appearance, everyone else in the town saw nothing but his fair facade. They made no attempt to look behind it and considered him odd, peculiar, and strange.
Though he couldn't care less what others thought of him, it saddened and frustrated the fiery teen to no end, not one in town could accept him for who he was.
"Kai?" A sweet voice broke the older teen from his thoughts, and he diverted his attention from his reflection to his worried little brother, holding two large paper bags of already paid for food. "You okay?"
"I'm fine bro," He smiled, "Just lost in my thoughts." He replied following his reflection until the glass faded into the wood, they continued on their way...

Jardin Secret
Tumblr media
Characters: Minghao x reader
Genre/warnings: Witch AU, fluff, accident, description of injuries
Word count: 3244
Summary: You don’t quite remember when it started, but you sure do recall the moment you realized it. And now it’s too late. The thorns of your blooming feelings encase your heart and now it bleeds with love and hope.
a/n: Everything in italic are lyrics from a french song, Jardin Secret by Cécile Corbel, which inspired me the idea of this fic. Also this is kind of a Howl!Minghao inspiration because yes, I’m digging it.
MASTERLIST
The memories of your previous life are scattered glimpses of light caught sporadically by your eyes. From what you gathered so far, you never really had someone to rely on. You remember travelling from villages to villages, never staying at the same place for more than a week. However, you never let your tarot deck behind you. That’s how you’ve been surviving, receiving the insights of the cards and sharing their answers to the curious, the worrieds, the hopefuls. You still use it to this day, the thick, timeworn paper electrizing your fingertips with the sparkles of magic emanating from your cards. You’ve been doing that for years - how many ? that again, you don’t remember, you’ve never been the type to keep dates in check, anyway - when on that fateful day, you met him.
J'ai la clé d'un jardin secret
Où mon cœur repose
A young man, around your age, was leaning over you, a worried look on his face. Your senses were gradually coming back at you and each one of your muscles stirred under your skin. You groaned, but no sound came from your dry throat, and instead you coughed some blood. The iron-tasting liquid spilling in your mouth. You didn’t see it from the angle you were laying down, but you could feel your right lower leg bent in an unusual way. You didn’t dare to move it.
“Hey ! Can you hear me ?” The man asked, and you frowned, the buzzing in your ears becoming more and more prominent, and you could feel a headache coming right at you.
You tried to answer him, but everything was blurred, and you could feel yourself falling even though you were already laying down, and everything went black.
Je l'ai cachée
Je garde la porte close
Oui close
You woke up - several days later, for what you have been told - in a surprisingly comfortable bed. This was definitely not something you were accustommed to, and it didn’t take you long to realize that you were in an unknown room. The place was oddly silent, too silent for your liking. You felt weak, despite just emerging from your slumber. A quick look around you allowed you to locate your bag, grimy and damaged, at the foot of the bed you were currently laid in. This was enough to calm your nerves, for now.
You took a moment to investigate the bedroom you were confined in. The walls were covered with several ornate tapestries and mismatched hangings, and the parts where the dark wood slats were visible were saturated with multiple woodshelves, bearing a multitude of concoctions, books, gemstones and several instruments which you didn’t know the use of. A narrow, but long window was letting the sunlight warm your skin, and the sensation, foreign almost, was sending chills through your spine. A large desk was getting your attention, covered with scrolls of parchment and a quantity of books you didn’t know could be stacked in such a tall pile. The room was giving you an eerie feeling, but the good kind. You were oddly at ease, yet you didn’t know why.
You’re startled by the door opening suddenly, banging against the wall and making the fragile bottles tremble with a sparkling sound, a weird and mesmerizing melody. You’re greeted again by the same man you’ve seen before fainting. You can see a disconcerted expression on his face for a second, quickly replaced by a discreet smile, and a glimmer in his eyes you can’t quite gauge.
“Sorry for surprising you, this one is temperamental,” He chuckles lightly, and you’re left confused at what he’s refering to before realizing he meant the door. “Here, I thought it would do you some good after everything that happened.”
That’s when you finally remark the tray he’s carrying in his hands, full with pieces of bread, butter, jam and different types of fruits. He set it swiflty on the nightstand beside you, and sat himself at the foot of the bed.
“I’m Minghao, by the way” He tells you, with the most genuine smile you swear you’ve ever seen.
Faut pas toucher
C'est si fragile
He tends your wounds, feeds you and help you recover without question. You insist to repay him for everything he has done for you, but each time you bring up the topic you’re met with a melodious “Hm-hm” in response, and in some way you know that you lost the argument already and he would refuse anything you will give him in return. You feel restless and impatient, being stuck inside and with little degree of freedom, your leg still tightly kept in place by several bandages and splints Minghao put great care of. Because of your prolonged state and your forced collocation, You eventually managed to get Minghao to tell you how he found you, and what happened. He admitted that he saw you unconscious, at the bottom of a cliff. Not tall enough to kill you on the spot but sufficient to cause great damage. You probably fell from exhaustion, not mentionning the terrible bad weather that saturated the earth with water and humidity, making progress into the wilderness difficult and risky.
“Why can’t you just heal it ? You’re a witch, right ?” You asked one time, breaking the comfortable silence you two would stay in most of the time, Minghao concentrating on his craft and you developping a passion for his personal book collection.
“It doesn’t work like that. I already did what I could with magic. You should know that by now, considering the amount of books you binged during the last weeks.” He snickered. Your ears were red at his little attack but you kept silent.
“Magic is a great tool when used wisely, and it shouldn’t be taken lightly. I can only reinforce your own cicatrisation and healing process, I can’t create broken bone and torn flesh out of nowhere.”
Toucher les roses
A peine écloses
“Minghao, I’m bored. I’m bored. I’m bored. Hao, I’m bored” You tried, with no avail.
Minghao was still focusing on his parchment, not even glancing at you or acknowledging your presence. From what you understood, it had been many years that he’s been waiting to get his hand on a copy, and since he came back home with it, he had been rummaging frantically though the whole house to find the ingredients requiered. A small vial was patiently waiting, kept in place by a metallic holder. A water pot was slowly heating up on the table, carefully placed at a secure distance from the rest. From where you rested, you could distinguish a cup of crimson sea salt, a bunch of different flowers he freshly picked from the garden earlier, as well as more suspicious materials, such as another flask containing what you supposed was blood.
You huffed at his lack of response, and hopped from the couch towards him, resting your arms and upper body on his shoulders as a support. You’ve been living with Minghao for several weeks now - He told you that it had been exactly three months, one week and four days, but you didn’t found it in yourself to care about the exact number - and the two of you had grown especially close. Minghao wasn’t one to have a lot of visitors - customers would maybe be a more appropriate term - and they would usually leave within the hour. Actually, the only one you’ve seen around multiple times was a guy named Jun, whose presence greatly made you uneasy. You felt like you were being watched, even when he wasn’t looking at you. It felt like he could read your mind just by staring in your eyes, and with all honesty, everything about him and his aura screamed danger. You could swear he was definitely not human, and you usually locked yourself in the bedroom whenever you knew he was coming.
“Hao, I’m boreeeeed” You cooed again, this time in his ear.
He groaned and leaned against the back of the chair he was sitting in, the sudden movement throwing you a little off balance, but you quickly recollected yourself and tightened your grip on his shoulders.
“I don’t know, what do you want me to do ?” He looked at you right in the eyes and you were suddenly aware of the closeness of your faces. You were sure your cheeks were bright red at this point but did your best to not let it affect you.
“I’m not the witch, you are ! Find something, whatever.” You countered.
Small bickering has started to become more and more part of your everyday life, and the prospect of leaving after your recovery was gradually put on the side in your mind. Actually, it scared you. You’ve grown accustommed to sharing your life with Minghao, the security and calm of a warm house had softened you, and imagining what would happen when you will be able to walk again greatly stressed you. Would Minghao force you out ? Would you be contrained to go back to your previous lifestyle - would that mean you two would part ways forever ? - You didn’t want to think about it.
He looked at you, an unreadable expression on his face. The two of you stayed there for a second, still, the only sounds surrounding you being the slowly boilling water pot and the soft swishing of the tree surrounding the house.
“Take a seat and mash the lavender buds.” He told you smoothly, taking you off guard. Minghao had never let you touch his ingredients, bottles or whatever witchcraft that was in the house - which meant, a lot of stuff - before.
“... What ?” You answered, meekly. But Minghao was already back at reading the recipe, pushing his glasses a little further up his nose.
Silently, you followed his instructions and took a seat in front of him, right beside the fresh cut flowers. You didn’t know all of the species Minghao had selected for the preparation, but you sure could recognize the characteristic shape of the lavender, as well as its subtle scent. On your table, was ready for use a chopping board accompanied by a small, pointy knife. The handle was carefully decorated with symbols you couldn’t decipher.
You diligently went to work, picking the most good looking lavender flowers from the bunch, removing the most damaged from the bouquet. You took a bud and started chopping it meticulously, but Minghao stopped you right away.
“No, not like this, you have to crush it. With the side of the blade, yeah, like that.” He told you, taking with great delicateness the knife from your hand and showing you the right way to do it.
“It releases its properties better” He stated, calmly, before handing you the knife again, his eyes finding yours, and you swear you felt your heart skip a beat at the sight.
J'irais bien de l'autre côté des choses
Voler le parfum des roses
From this point, you started helping Minghao more and more in his experiments. he introduced you to the rudiments of magic, and even if you weren’t exactly a beginner in the domain, this type of magic has nothing to do with your cards readings. You found yourself more and more interested by his craft, surprising yourself daydreaming sometimes, gazing at Minghao, his tall but slim frame hunched on a spell book, reading attentively and sometimes adding annotations or correcting old and unused spells. Sometimes you wondered if he could actually read things, his messy long hair getting in the way, and you couldn’t help but stare each time he put them back, in an almost unconscious move.
You start to notice the little details about him. The way he carefully pours his tea in the morning, the way he touches every object with great care and precision, like he doesn’t want to hurt it, like it’s alive. The glimmer in his eyes went he talks about something that caught his attention lately. His strict but caring behavior when you would mess up something or stumble upon your words when recitating an incantation - you shouldn’t mess with magic, after all. The smallest mistake and everything could go wrong -, how the two of you would snuggle on the couch with fuzzy blankets after a long day of appointments and work. His small giggle that makes your heart shake each time you hear it.
J'ai rêvé
D'effacer le gris que le temps dépose
Time passes, and you also gradually learns to walk again. You feel like a big, clumsy toddler and you cry yourself to sleep several times watching the state your leg is in, frail and scarred after being cut from any physical activity. Minghao doesn’t really know what to do, so he prepares your favorite tea blend - a spicy, but sweet black tea with undertones of orange - and he stays at your side, comforting you until you fall sound asleep.
Minghao never showed any sign of irritation and impatience towards you. You would take twice, maybe thrice the time to cross the same distance as him, but he would wait for you calmly. He never raised your grunts of frustration and powerlessness, nor pitied you either. With hardwork and determination, you manage to walk almost as well as before. It passed unremarked to most, a little wobble here and there betraying you sometimes, but you eventually recovered most of your capacity. However, ended were the times where running carelessly to escape shady merchants or bandits was your daily life, climbing walls and fences to got faster and outrunning them to save your skin.
J'irai bien de l'autre côté du monde
Voir si les mots se confondent
Came the moment to discuss what was the next step. You had feared this exact situation for the past months, but now that your leg was back in function again, you felt like you had to bring up the topic.
“Hao…” You started, uneasy. Just by the tone of your voice, Minghao felt that something wasn’t right and he lifted his head from his book to look at you, sitting at the other end of the couch. He didn’t say anything, waiting for you to continue. You cleared your throat and obligated, pushing the words that were burning your tongue from your mouth.
“I wondered if… maybe this is my time to go ? My leg is fully healed now so… I don’t want to bother you any longer.” You kept your face as unreadable as possible, even though you were internally shaking and bracing yourself for his answer. If he wanted you to leave, you shouldn’t cry, not in front of him, at least.
You were both making eye contact and you sensed something coming from him. Confusion, relief, disappointment, anger maybe ? You couldn’t quite put it but before you had time to think about it twice he was back at his usual, impassible self, the same smile you were so used to adorning his pretty face. It took him several seconds to answer, and you could almost see the gears turning in his mind.
“If this is what you wish for, then let it be. I will not keep you here any longer if this is not what you want. But know that you’re never a stranger here. This is your home, too.” His response took your breath away, and somewhere in you was warming up at his words, This is your home too, you mentally repeated.
“I… I wouldn’t mind staying a little longer, then.”, you breathed.
De passer de l'autre côté de l'ombre
Et que des voix me répondent
So as the leaves were falling from the trees, you stayed at Minghao’s side. He and you were focused on drying all the garden flowers, and ensure they would stay in perfect condition for the winter to come. You carefully opened the large, heavy book you used for the starry mint and the water tulips. You retrieved each flower with great care, and placed them inside their designed jar : this would greatly help if someone fell sick with the deadly plague that was slowly coming back to life with the arrival of the dry air of the cold. Minghao was doing the same on his side, carefully picking out the thorns of the various roses. Their poison, when used correctly, could relieve the pain of muscular fatigue and migraines. You learned a lot at his side, probably more than you did in all the years you lived. You took a deep breath and relinquished in the warmth of the ever-lit blue fireplace. Its light was flooding the whole living room with a relaxant, almost melancholic blueish and purpleish hue, flickering and crackling. The fire was slowly licking the birch logs, their bark splintering under the heat and falling into the still burning embers.
For the first time in your life, you had a place you could call home. This thought rang a sad, but hopeful bell in your fragmented memories. You don’t remember having ever called somewhere “home”, and it took you time to understand what people would mean by having a home. “Home is a place where you feel at ease, where you feel that you can be you, where you mind is at peace.” That’s what you believed was “home”, after having gathered multiple opinions from strangers and one-time acquintances.
But sometimes you truly wondered if home was more about the people around you than the place. You gazed up at Minghao, unaware of your internal rambling, and you took in the sight of his delicate profile, the way the fire reflected itself in his eyes. You coudn’t tell him.
Je voudrais passer de l'autre côté des choses
J'ai rêvé d'effacer les couleurs que le temps dépose
It’s after your second winter together that you can definitely feel your heart swelling at the simple thought of him, of his delicate smile and his witty eyes. Putting words on it scares you. As if pronouncing it, thinking it, even, would engrave your feelings into stone. It feels like a dance, almost, the game between you and him. Like Icarus and the Sun, you fear that you might burn everything to ashes with too much confidence.
The first time he kissed you, you leaned into his embrace, slowly. He hesitantly put a hand on your waist, as if you would break like fragile ice. His touch felt burning hot through your clothes, and you wanted to cry because of the overwhelming feelings that dawned upon you. You stared into each other eyes, a look being more speaking than actual words.
J'ai la clé d'un jardin secret
Où mon coeur repose
Still, doubt was haunting your mind constantly, and you couldn’t help but worry that everything was only the fruit of your imagination. It broke your heart to just considering it. The harvest of your love, beaming with hope, reapt from your ribcage, thorns tearing the flesh apart to let your bloody roses bloom for everyone to see. But you’ve always loved the risk, that was in your nature. You wouldn’t have walked on the edge of this cliff otherwise. So you allowed yourself to hope, to believe in it, to believe in him. And it only needed a few, carefully chosen words to have you smiling with knowing eyes at Minghao.
“You know that no one can come between us, right ?”, he mused.

Happy Worldbuilding Wednesday! You have your choice of questions here! Question 1: What is religion like in your world? What's popular, what's looked down upon, what's devout, what's lazy? Question 2: Let's talk hobbies! What are the popular hobbies in your world? What's useful? What's just there for fun? What builds morale? You can answer either one of those questions or, if you're feeling wild, both! Have a good day!
Religion is one I’ve put a good bit of thought into. The major deities of the region/Empire are Drendae and Arada, worshipped in basically any configuration possible.
The Ridimi, and therefore ‘default’, interpretation is that they represent binary phenomemnon. One is life, one is death. One is fire, one is water. One is sun, one is moon. One is light, one is dark. Where it gets a bit more complicated is that they’re also cyclical. They swap roles on a schedule where no pair of roles perfectly matches with another pair.
In Ridimi, Drendae is always male and Arada is always female.
These two gods are kinda the only ones worshipped, but they’re worshipped under enough different interpretations and titles that they’re a pantheon by themselves.
In Irae’s culture, the hunter-gatherer people of the swamp that Emic invades at the start of the book, Drendae and Arada have fixed aspects. Drendae is hunting, death, poison, danger. Arada is nurture, life, food, safety.
The gods are gendered the same as Ridimi, but the people are not. At fifteen each child picks a path and with it a gendered pronoun regardless of sex. This choice is not final and may be swapped multiple times throughout a lifetime. Irae is biologically female, but has chosen Drendae so uses male pronouns. There’s a certain amount of pressure for him to follow Arada just long enough to have a child, but his choice is respected and even if he did choose to have a child he’d be easily able to switch back to Drendae after the birth.
Emic’s mother’s mother’s country, Echesh, worships just Arada in her role as a harvest deity. Mare’s home island of Elmhearth on the Saltflats worships Drendae and Arada as male twins, but with the Ridimi style cycle. Coriander’s home of Timberdrift strictly enforces the Ridimi style, but allows the use of the names of the local pantheon to be used as titles in front of the name of whichever of Drendae or Arada is more applicable at the time.
Hobbies, I’ll cover for characters rather than everything anyone anywhere does for fun.
Emic: Hawking and hunting are traditional pastimes for Echesh nobility and despite never having visited the country, she is technically an Echeshi Duchess. The printing press exists and she likes to pretend that she’s reading big dense tomes of military strategy. In reality she has a serious soft spot for Heroic Adventure fiction.
Altwain: People tend to get the impression that he’s bookish, but he much prefers practical hobbies like knitting and wood carving. When he has access to suitable stones he will use his magic to shape them, either usefully or decoratively.
Mare: People tend to get the impression that she’s unrelentingly practical, but she much prefers a good book. Sure she knows how to mend her own socks or quickly whittle a spoon, but that’s not *fun*. She’ll play a hand or two of cards with the rest of her Corbel for whatever they have to gamble.
Coriander: He considers his interest in cooking shameful due to being nobility and can only justify it when he uses his small amount of magical talent for water manipulation to assist. His family couldn’t afford typical noble pursuits however, so he’s adept at the sort of things Emic would consider beneath both of them, like weaving or fishing.
Irae: Irae does not understand the word ‘hobby’, there’s no direct translation. His tribe has a storyteller/bard and he thinks that maybe when he’s too old to fight and hunt he’ll turn to Arada for that job. He sees it as something he’s working at though, listening and remembering the stories so he can tell them himself someday.
