God, Nightreign has been SO much fun (aside from a few bosses). Absolutely adore this game already. Currently mostly maining Duchess and Wylder, but we needa try Revenant and Recluse sometime X3
(Technically possibly boss spoilers in the tags so uhh readers beware?)
#koeia's journal#the bosses in question that we hate are Darkdrift Knight and Gaping Jaw#GJ is just kinda annoying. but DK just feels outright unfair and unfun#hyper mobile. high damage. one lock on point semi high up#80% of his attacks are AoEs. all his attacks look like theyre going for someone else until they come down on you#nothing is particularly well telegraphed#also hyper aggressive and just. genuinely the least fun we ever have has with a souls boss#conversely Fissure in the Fog is our FAVORITE boss absolutely nothing about him feels unfair everything is well telegraphed#he actually sits in place for a bit allowing you to damage him his music is GORGEOUS his arena is beautiful he is genuinely just perfect

Trafalgar D. Law Revenant on Elden Ring Nightreign meet me in the parkinglot.
#my last game before a busy weekend and this idiot kept having to redirect to#fight bosses she couldn't handle#was literally leading the party to the great enemy under the castle AT LEVEL 7#mind you we are only level 7 because on the way to a blockade she decided to try and take on a sentinel at level 5#but im like we can probably handle the one under the castle and we need to make up for lost time#so I ping it and we're all hurrying toward it and im in front i get there and realize she went UP TOP#TO THE MUCH MORE DIFFICULT GREAT ENEMY ON THE ROOF#and so im like okay FINE but you better be able to handle it and what happe s#she just repeatedly goes down#why and how are you even here#anyway we got to darkdrift knight at LEVEL 10 thanks to this nonsense#i had to go off#fucker with their one piece ass name#also there was a minute where I was fighting a royal revenant alone cuz by that point i'd stopped#trying to predict her behavior#and im only level 8 but I'm holding my own cuz they're just not that hard#and she shows up and juay#just runs by#just keeps going walks right past the fight#like what did I do to you#anyway I killed that mf and got vyke's war spear which#is my favorite weapon so#not all was lost#generally i do think this is just a case of two players trying to be the 'leader'#BUT IF YOU'RE GONNA LEAD AT LEAST GO WHERE YOU SAY YOU'RE GONNA GO#and also maybe just make less stupid decisions about what order to do things in#just sad cuz i dont get to play again until monday BOOOOOOO

so what is your diagnostic on nightreign?
Okay, so,
It's fun! I like it, in fact, I can't wait to play more. But, it is flawed: It has both fundamental flaws and untapped potential.
I am fortunate enough to have a lot of friends to play with, but it's in fact a pretty big flaw that you NEED two other people to play: It is certainly possible to win as a single player, but it's also incredibly difficult, and requires some pretty deep knowledge of Elden Ring, like poise breakpoints, when the boss is going to have their posture broken, and a lot of fundamentals, in addition to the Luck needed in a roguelike. Thing is, consistent wins as a single player do demand, on average, far more than even base Elden Ring asks for you to even get on the ride. On the other hand, I've actually had a pretty good time with randos, most everyone seems to believe in teamwork, pinning on the map, and following as a group to pins.
Now, the things is, the roguelike upgrades part is pretty underwhelming: I shouldn't be jumping of joy when I see Max HP +15% and cringe in disgust when I see I can obtain the mystic ability to conjure a rain of magic projectiles on my wake. It should be an exciting prospect to get the ability to cause thunderstorms and frostgales. Point is, all the fun upgrades suck ass, and all the boring, utilitarian Number Go Up upgrades are by far the best. Which is such missed opportunity because a roguelike should by all means let you go goofy goober on your upgrade combos and synergies. I shouldn't feel disappointed when I get offered the mystic ability to conjure arcane rains with but a mere footstep, you know?
Another thing is that the Nightlords are... All over the place. Some Nightlords are pretty cool, like Gladius and The Two Bugs. Some Nightlords are pure god damn cancer, like The Water Boy and the Darkdrift Knight, the former moreso than the latter, in terms of just how much the developers seem to hate melee as a concept.
Nightlords move. Nightlords move a LOT. The Water Boy especially is Elden Beast 2.0 where the entire thing is running after it for 5 mins to land one or two hits. It makes me wonder if they actually beta tested this. When I think about Fromsoft Hard, I think about a well designed boss that needs you to engage with the mechanics of the game to a high level of skill, when I think about Fromsoft Hard, I don't think about "you get one hit in every 5 minutes and those 5 minutes are spent dodging 1 or 2-shot attacks". So, once more: You Guys Fucking Suck At Designing Bosses. As much as I love Elden Ring and Nightreign, they have their weakest soldiers designing some of these bosses, and it shows. For every Midra (godlike boss fight) there are eight Elden Beasts or Black Blade Kindreds (dogshit bosses that have you spend half or more of the fight chasing after the boss rather than doing anything remotely fun). Nightreign mainly brings Elden Beasts instead of Midras.
Mind you, it's still the tight and fun combat of ER, the fun weapons of ER, and many fun enemies and bosses of ER, it's a great time, I'm loving it, but whenever we get close to the end of the run, I can't help but think "ok now here comes dogshit" half of the time and I shouldn't. I shouldn't think that. I should be excited that I'm about to fight a strong dude, not disappointed I'm about to Run Forever To Land One Hit.
Connection is buttery smooth, at least in my experience. I've played with eurofriends and it holds up fantastic. The new movesets of the characters are fun, I love the Remembrance system and their interactions with one another, their concepts as characters are also really good.
A 7 or 8 out of 10 kinda game as it stands, which is low for a FromSoft title, but still a great game. I hope it only gets better the more content they add.

one thing i rly think is funny about nightreign is how there’s talk of “The Gods” in there (particularly re: the darkdrift knight description)

+ the talk of grynn, maybe more that i havent seen yet. but like oh THE Gods? a pantheon?? a collective, presumably working in some manner of collaboration?! whether or not this is purely the centaur’s beliefs or otherwise
elden ring’s flavor of divinity generally leans toward bloodborne (distant, interdimensional/outer space) but nightreign’s sounds to lean somewhere more toward dark souls then (historical, vague but referring to more traditional and varied means of worship)(the infant in recluse’s lore does lean more bloodborne too tho)

Libra, Creature of Night looks like he's an ancient demonic diety they once worshipped Baal-style in Belurat, very Belurat colors and feel. The orgies were crazy
Sentient Pest looks related to Fallingstar Beast like they're from the same place for sure
Darkdrift Knight is just Commander Gaius' old drinking buddy or something it's fine he doesn't need pants
Tricephalos looks like a bigger three headed version of the thing in the Raya Lucaria academy. It's 'wolf' but they look more like kitsune to me
Gaping Jaw I don't even know. It's like those hippo cranked to 12
That ice dragon sends your ass to the glass world and you shatter surrounded by Disney on Ice. I respect him

Nightreign — Fulghor Lore

The Darkdrift Knight, Fulghor, Champion of Nightglow, is an ancient Night Centaur—beings who exude sacred power. Fulghor was a valiant and fervently devoted servant of the mighty radiant gods, who, according to legend, concealed themselves in a thunderous roar.
His left arm was severed from behind, and he came to the despairing revelation that his comrades—those who had fought beside him for so long—had at last betrayed him and forsaken their gods. Yet his devotion still burns. He now wields a sacred form of the Night’s power.
His spear is of unique make, layered with the very weight of the Night. Through countless battles, it has been imbued with a holy essence. Harboring the power of Order, it possesses the ability to slay Those Who Live in Death.

Yuria of Londor for the character ask!
Thank you sm for asking again!! And again im so so sorry for having made you wait so long..anyway here we go!
Favorite thing about them: the ending you get doing her quest, also her fit cuz PLEASE SHES SO COOL PLEALEKAUEIWIDIISHWYW
Least favorite thing about them: that she asks you to kill my GOAT Orbeck, i know it makes sense for her to do so but I LOVE HIM I DONT WANT TO MURDER MY POOKIE.
Favorite line: "Our Lord of Hollows, it shall be, who weareth the true face of mankind."
brOTP: her and Friede! Even if the latter left the Sable Church and wishes to remain in the dragged out Painted World, she still wants the Lord of Londor to rule the outside world, as indicated by one of her lines in dialogue.
OTP: i dont ship her so yeah..
nOTP: x Kaathe. Screw you, Kaathe.
Random headcanon: her and Agdayne met and that's how she got Darkdrift, they were besties and NO ONE will tell me otherwise. Credits to @navlaanchair for this hc though since he theorized it first!
Unpopular opinion: Lord of Hollows ending could NOT have existed witouth Ds2, her dialogue DOES reference Vendrick's and that, along with the entire ending itself, is one of the strongest evidence to how important Ds2 was for the trilogy.
Favorite picture of them:

So I just realized I never really thought about nor posted it, but after coming back to Nightreign and killing the new souped-up version of Gaping Jaw I decided now to list the Nightlords in order of least to most favourite and as short of an explanation as to why. (I will not include the aforementioned Souped-Up Gaping Jaw, maybe once they've released the super versions of each boss I'll list those separately).
In 8th and last place, Sentient Pest aka Gnoster. I just don't like it. It's a duo boss of caster + tank, I haven't even fought it solo because I just don't like fighting them, don't care for the vibe or the music or anything. Overall I don't necessarily hate anything I just also don't like anything about this fight APART FROM the Phase 2 transition. The whole wasteland being lit up with flowers or whatever those are as they combine is very cool.
7th place, Augur aka Maris. This boss has a cool song and vibe but just takes way too fuckin long. You're also put on a time limit if you don't have lightning to interrupt its unavoidable map-wide sleep nuke so that can get in the bin. Besides that I just don't find it that interesting. It technically has 2 phases but they barely change anything, and again the fight just takes way too long as you chase down either it or the tentacles. Real boring after the first couple kills and no challenge unless you couldn't get a lightning weapon.
6th is Fissure in the Fog aka Caligo. Similar problem to Augur, takes too long. It flies across the map several times, it puts the ice under itself so you can't even attack as often as you could, just excessively slow. But it is much cooler, great music, great design, great attacks. Just a shame the fight itself sucks.
5th is Tricephalos aka Gladius. This is the first boss and really hammers home that this is a co-op game when you're new. That being said it's a fantastic introduction. Lots of big but simple attacks, cool design, good music, and the only weak point is the trio section can sometimes completely screw you over solo as they can just attack at perfect intervals on rare occasion to catch you regardless of when you roll.
4th is Gaping Jaw aka Adel. A solid boss with simple attacks, flashy specials, and a pretty simple design. Honestly it's incredibly easy to kill this fella and I'd put Gladius over this were it not for the trio phase being really bullshit sometimes. The lightning effects like the cracks on the ground post-slam are cool, and it's just a nice little fight.
The top 3 are my favourite and it's a massive leap from 4th to 3rd. Frankly these last 3 are so much more fun than the others that I'm explicitly putting this here to break them up.
3rd is... Night Aspect aka Heolstor. Yup, the final boss is 3rd. He's very cool, and he reminds me a lot of Vendrick, particularly at the start when he's just standing around in the wastelands with his greatsword. I like to imagine this as what a Full Power Vendrick could've been. But yeah, badass specials in phase 2, simple phase 1 that exists mainly to prepare you for what's to come (namely delay city), and just a really fun boss. Takes some getting used to and he does hit really hard, but a very fun boss after those initial learning runs.
2nd is Equilibrious Beast aka Libra. I fucking love this goat demon thing. It is so cool, its music is fucking amazing, and its fight is chaotic and lives up to its gimmick of "Madness". It's one of the only bosses that makes you check your positioning repeatedly while still pushing you with direct attacks. I love this guy, but he does feel a little excessive sometimes which is why he comes 2nd.
And finally, in 1st place and sitting at the top of the mountain, Darkdrift Knight aka Fulghor. Look, I'm a sucker for knights, 1v1s, and big moves, and Fulghor's got all of em. The slow massive swings with his sword that blast wind like Nameless King, the big stomps that crack the earth around him, the lightning nuke that smites all players if you don't interrupt him, and phase 2 where he turns into some kind of souped-up Gundyr. Love this boss and love fighting him.
Honestly Libra and Fulghor could swap places depending on the day. In particular, I'd say with a group I prefer Libra, but in a solo run I prefer Fulghor. But yeah, that's my list. I know a lot of people like Caligo and Maris but much like Ancestor Spirit in the base Elden Ring I just don't get it. Anyways thanks for reading if you bothered.

Elden Ring Nightreign introduces even tougher Nightlord bosses and a new NPC to challenge your skills. These "enhanced" versions of familiar enemies are part of FromSoftware's promise for more difficult fights against key Nightlords. The first of these, the Sovereign Gaping Jaws (Adel), is now live for players who have defeated the original Nightlord. Only those who have already defeated the standard boss can face this tougher version, which will rotate weekly. Other Sovereign Nightlords are on the way, including Sentient Pest and Darkdrift Knight, adding a fresh layer of challenge to your journey. A new NPC now acts as a hub — trading Sovereign Sigils earned from defeating sovereign bosses for relics and valuable items. Plus, players can manipulate world events using these Sigils, making the experience more customizable. Are you ready to take on these ultra-challenging Nightlords? Will this push your limits or motivate your next victory?
