Fave fics of 2023

I read almost exclusively Achilles x Patroclus fics this year 😅😅Here is a sampling of some of my faves--some that were posted this year, and some that I only read this year.

Completed fics:

was it my august by archangelgf (Achilles x Patroclus, E). 18 year old popstar Achilles is the hottest mess in all of LA, and his father asks his ex-best friend (ex-something) Patroclus to help out. Achilles is such a mess. Just such a mess.

Twin Flames by @johaerys-writes (Achilles x Patrolcus, E). Prince and squire AU in which Patroclus didn't follow Achilles to Mount Pelion. After years of separation, Patroclus returns to Achilles' service in order to escort him to his betrothal.

Flowers for the Dead and Living by firefly_quill (Achiles x Patroclus, T). After mob violence ended Patroclus's medical career (and resulted in Achilles' disappearance), Pat gets a job in a flower shop. Very sweet.

Feral and Stray by littlelamblittlelamb. Achilles x Patroclus (E). In rural Australia in the 1950s, Achilles and Patroclus have a complicated-and frankly fucked up-relationship. Mind the content warnings on this one.

On the Ropes by red_smear. Achilles x Patroclus x Zagreus (E). Patroclus and Achilles are hella divorced, and the history is juicy. Zagreus accidentally forms relationships with them both while trying to win enough money boxing to get out of town.

Fugue by @swaps55. Shepard x Kaidan (M) Kaidan's life during the missing two years. Devastating. Gorgeous. I want to take the chapter where the Normandy is blown apart and post it on my wall.

Fics I hope to see in 2024 (aka WIPs)

Where the Dead Forget by @darlingpoppet (Achilles x Patroclus, M). Whilst Achilles is acting as a guard to the House of Hades, Patroclus drinks from the Lethe and forgets him entirely. Achilles grieves all over again.

you’re a walking disaster, and yet- by @johaerys-writes. Achilles x Patroclus (T). Pat and Achilles growing up in modern rural Greece. They both have issues, but now they have each other.

Face to Face by @juliafied. Zagreus x Thanatos (M). Thanatos comes across a familiar face on a dating app. Thanatos swipes right.

When Death Incarnate Got Banished to France by Marro (G). Thanatos is kicked out of the Underworld and trying to live like the mortals do in France. He gets a cat.

WIP Wednesday

... and I can't believe it's only Wednesday 😅 It’s been a loooong week you guys

But I have been working on the next chapter of you're a walking disaster and yet--, where Achilles and Pat seem unable to stay out of trouble:

“Look, kid, I’m not saying you’re lying,” he says, though it’s obvious that he thinks Achilles is lying, “but I have to tell you, this doesn’t look good. Vandalism is a serious offence.”

“You think I don’t know? Mr. Chiron keeps telling us that,” Achilles counters hotly. “That doesn’t mean—”

“If you aren’t going to be helpful about this, the only thing I can do is take you to the police station, and hope you change your mind there.” 

Patroclus’ blood runs cold. He looks from Achilles to the policemen and back. “You can’t,” he says, breathless, “you can’t do that. You—you have no proof.”

“This proof enough for you?” the other policeman says, the older one, glaring at Patroclus as he gestures at the graffiti. “Now beat it before we take you in as well.”

Patroclus can only stare as the man lays a hand on Achilles’ shoulder and leads him to the parked police car. Achilles protests loudly as he lets them walk him there, but still doesn’t make any move to run away or shake their grip off him. Even he knows that trying to stop or resist this will only make matters worse. 

The wise thing to do, Patroclus knows, would be to walk away and thank his luck that he wasn’t taken in as well. He should go back home and call Peleus, and ask him to come back to Phthia from his business trip post haste to deal with this. He should keep his head down and figure out a way out of this mess, for both of them. 

Just as Achilles is about to get into the police car, Patroclus takes a step forward.

“Hey,” he says. “Fuck you.”

The young policeman turns to look at him in question.

“What was that?”

Patroclus’ heart is slamming madly against his ribcage. He glances at Achilles, who is also watching him with avid curiosity, then at the men looming over him. He takes a breath and swallows hard. 

“F—fuck the police.”

Achilles’ eyes go wide as saucers. The older man turns around to face him fully, glaring at him under dark and bushy brows. “Care to say that again, son?”

The policeman’s chest is puffed out and his fists resting at his hips, where his gun and taser are. Patroclus bites back a whimper when the man takes a step towards him. 

“All… all cops are bastards?” he tries, mumbling shakily. 

The man’s eyes narrow. Patroclus has the strongest urge to cry.

“I cannot believe you swore at a cop,” Achilles cackles as soon as the holding cell door is banged closed behind them. “What were you even thinking?”

There isn't a single definite site that collects everything, there's such a lot that it would be a *huge* undertaking. Here are a few you might want to check out though:

Eruri Receipts Post by @erbeansandravioli This is old now, so it doesn't include recent material, but it's still one of the best.

ERL Round Up - English Version An amazing resource from the Japanese side of the fandom. Thanks to @tsuki-no-ura for putting me on to this one.

@ningen-suki's blog is a treasure trove of content from the Japanese fandom including translations and fan reactions.

@yusenki's blog has a wealth of canon content including translations, Smartpass stories, CDs and more. It's not specifically Eruri, but it's definitely worth checking out, especially for the Smartpass translations, which are a gold mine.

@tsuki-no-ura one of the most diligent translators ever to grace the fandom, really gets into the nuance of translation. Check out the Bessatsu Q&A Masterpost and Dear Girl Stories translations in particular.

@oscarforjm also has some interesting translations in their Eruri tag.

@snknews has a comprehensive post about a fan Q&A session with Isayama in Oita in 2018. There's all kinds of little gems here.

@darlingpoppet, who has been a stalwart of the Eruri fandom forever, also has an excellent archive of translations on their blog.

Hopefully you'll find enough canon facts and titbits here to make you very happy!

Have you heard Levi's official theme song?Dark Side of the Moon.

I have heard few people talk about it. I think the lyrics articulate Levi's belief and principles very well and it feels like he is singing this to the 104th and it brings back many memories of AOT pre timeskip.

1. How many works do you have on AO3? 17 currently, but I'm a serial deleter and I always wanna keep it under 20. would be like. 69 by now otherwise

2. What is your AO3 word count? 217,645...and see above LOL I shudder to imagine what it would be if I wasn't always deleting

3. What fandoms do you write for? mostly cql and asoiaf in recent years. tho I also have a zelda wip I've been kicking around for a while...we'll see if that ever amounts to anything :') and I'll still keep a few snk fics up, being mighty fond of those days

4. What are your top five fics by kudos? tuck the darkness in (wx shrinking haunted house fic), sunday night lights (eruri football au), friendly fields (wx ghost baby fic), fourth one will prob be deleted soon so it doesn't count lol, and where they grow (madam lan lives au).

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? yep every time! at most it'll take me a month to respond but I never let it go beyond that. even the negative ones (I'm a Pro-Crit Fanfic Guy sorry)

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? the ending to our shadow over the sea (rhaenicent fic) has garnered many delightful threats upon my person and I cherish them all. that and two slow dancers (eruri vampire au): FIGHT!

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? most of my other fics tbqh ugh :( maybe set me as a seal (eruri reincarnation au) just bc happy endings for the ruris are rare wah...

8. Do you get hate on fics? idk if I would call it hate, but criticism yes! most common word I hear along that line is "boring" which is definitely understandable lol, there are times when I reread my own works and find them too generic/not rly offering anything new, in which case I take that forward with me into new works to try to enrich them. although I guess if by "hate" you mean like, troll type hate on pairings & things, then yeah who doesn't LOL

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? yep, and more so in recent years! and it's the kind of smut that's way too sappy no matter the situation no matter the tone UGH :(

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written? snk/asoiaf crossover for my yumihisu rights...idk if it counts as a crossover since it's just snk characters in the asoiaf world, but I did go Very heavy on the asoiaf lore lol whoops

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? yeah lol multiple but I kinda forgot until this was asked, can't bring myself to care unfortch, peace be with you

Have you ever had a fic translated? yes!! southern cross translated into chinese by gloria_77, set me as a seal translated into chinese by applethief326, and sunday night lights translated into russian by ackermantihora! and I know there's still several translations of deleted fics out there heh. I so appreciate the hard work of you amazing translators!!

13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before? not since I was a kid doing it for giggles with friends, but definitely a lot of fun :)

14. What's your all-time favourite ship? eruri literally life-changing, so. and korrasami

What's a WIP you'd like to finish but doubt you ever will? oh man there was this one hannibal wip I had back in the day that like, the themes and imagery and stuff would've been so legit but I needed someone smarter than me to write it :( it was about will & hannibal taking sanctuary in that one silician cathedral while besieged by police. kinda weaving back and forth between past and present, contemplating God and gods and stuff. someone write this please. also there's this one cql post-canon fic but it's all about accepting death and the curse of immortality and stuff and it's kind of a bummer to write LOL maybe will keep chipping away at it one day

16. What are your writing strengths? seems like I'm good at getting across my goal themes & purposes - ppl seem to pick up what I'm putting down often and it makes me happy! because I do tend to err on the side of vagueness & trusting the audience, and it's nice when it's rewarded :)

17. What are your writing weaknesses? like mentioned before, my fics have been called boring & I think that has a lot to do with some generic imagery/syntax I've relied on - definitely something I've tried to improve on but it's a work in progress! like I've sometimes sacrificed diction for story flow ya know, it doesn't work on shrewder readers and I def respect that & want to do better

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? if you know what you're doing, cool! but I've come across too many instances in fics where the author demonstrated a lack of basic understanding of the language & not only does it throw you out but it feels disrespectful - I know ppl get all "it's just fanfic I'm not being paid!!1!!!!11" but if you're going to work within a culture that's not your own, research. not exactly sure if that's what the question is asking LOL but that's been my experience both as a reader and a writer

19. First fandom you wrote for? legend of zelda!! I wrote a billion words of ocarina of time pre-canon fic about the three goddesses at age 10 on a beat-up floppy disc. those were the days man

20. Favourite fic you've ever written? man something happened with southern cross that I've never been able to truly replicate...looking back there's a few too many extra words, few too many instances of passive voice, but for the most part I'm just like damn dude...what was she cooking

Levi: Oh, now that you mention it, those merchant goons did stop by Hans: I wonder what’s inside?! Hm? This bottle is... *sniff sniff*... what do you think it is, Mike? Mike: This is... hair product? It’s for you, isn’t it, Erwin? Erwin: That is correct Levi: Spending your money on frivolous shit as always I see Erwin: Please pretend to ignore this much extravagance There is no other way for me to use my salary, Levi Levi (surprised): There’s fine tea leaves... Hey do you know if the new Attack On Titan 3DS game will ever be sold outside of Japan and translated into English? There are a lot of original scenes in the game (including Ymir and Historia omg I love them so much) and they look cool but I can't tell what's going on when it's in Japanese. And what about that scene with Ymir's love letter? Do you know anybody who can provide a rough translation?

Koei Tecmo like any other company want to profit from the sales. It’s possible but I can’t say for sure. We need to wait for the announcement. I’ll keep my fingers crossed :)

I know @suniuz, @yusenki, @darlingpoppet, @plain-dude, @survey-corps-potato and thanks to them we have very accurate translations from Japanese. Thank you guys for your hard work!

Where The Dead Forget by @darlingpoppet (Achilles x Patroclus, E, WIP). Patroclus drank from the Lethe and removed every memory he had of Achilles. Achilles has finally been granted permission to visit him in Elysium. So angsty and with so many fun Iliad cameos.

The Rumor Mill by Paladingineer (Gen, G, complete). Hawke accidentally (and perhaps Varric knowingly) turns herself into a modern day Atalanta of sorts. Short and fun.

New Behaviors by Luddleston (Thanatos x Zagreus, E, Complete). Prior to Zagreus, Thanatos had never had sexual desire, much less sex. It's a learning experience.

As Fate Would Have It by @johaerys-writes (Achilles x Patroclus, E, WIP). First omegaverse story I've read. I'm keen on any story where the characters are telling each other how annoyed they are with each other in the midst of boning.

WIP Wednesday

It's that time of the week! Now that I'm back from vacations I've been working on the next chapter of you're a walking disaster and yet-, which is very close to being finished (but augh, the heartbreak):

“So this is how it’s going to be now? You’ll just sit there by yourself and not talk to anybody?”

Patroclus glances up at Achilles, his humble lunch of bread and cheese forgotten in his hands. The sun blinds him and hurts his eyes. Achilles is glaring at him, arms folded before his chest. His eyes are hard and his jaw is set, a muscle playing at his temple. 

“Not anybody,” Patroclus says. “Just you.” 

“Well, too fucking bad, you’re talking to me right now. So just give up the act, okay? It isn’t funny anymore.”

Patroclus' anger flares hot. The fucking mouth on him. “Get out of my face, Achilles.” 

Achilles tsks, planting his feet even more firmly on the ground. “What did I even say to you, huh? What did I say? I just said—”

Patroclus doesn’t wait to hear the rest of it. He shoves his lunch back in his bag and gets up. Recess will be over soon anyway, he doesn’t have time for this pointless conversation. 

Achilles catches his arm. 

“Why are you being like this?” he asks, his voice hard, but Patroclus thinks he can detect a sharp and desperate edge there. “I told you I didn’t mean it like that. If you’d stayed for just one minute…” 

The words peter out into nothingness. When Patroclus doesn’t turn around to look at him, he lets out a shaky sigh. “Pat, come on,” he whispers. “Please.” 

This is the moment, Patroclus thinks. The moment to take the hair tie off his wrist and toss it at his feet, to trample it in the dust for good measure, to pay him back with the same coin. It would be so good if he could do that. It would only be fair. It would make him feel so much better about… all of this.  

The moment the thought crosses his mind, he knows it for the lie it is. He can’t do it. Can’t find it in his heart to cross that line. Maybe he’s just a coward deep down, soft and weak like his father always told him, but he doesn’t want to hurt Achilles, not even in retaliation. Whatever twisted fantasy he had of doing that tastes bitter now that he’s near him. Hurting him would only hurt Patroclus more. And deep down he knows that even though Achilles didn’t keep his promise, Patroclus is still so desperate to hold onto his own. So desperate for this, for him, that it shames him. 

“I have to go,” he mutters, before he can lose his nerve. He slips free of Achilles’ grasp and hurries back to the classroom, with minutes until the end of recess to spare.

were you in the fandom when the acwnr anime first released? what was the fandoms reaction to the adaptation being different from the manga i am curious.

I wasn't in the fandom when ACWNR first aired. I joined in fandom in late 2015 and the ACWNR OVA came out at the end of 2014. I asked some of the Veterans who were around at the time though and they were kind enough to share their reminiscences 🙏

@darlingpoppet: "I just remember we all had Thoughts™️ about Erwin’s ending speech… that’s never really changed has it 😂"

@he1chouarts: "We were all pissed about Erwin. Weak nose bump, weird dialogue."

@masksarehot2: "Part 1, everyone went nuts. Part 2, mixed reactions. After part 1 we were concerned they would cut a lot of content, and we were right 😭 Levi going feral was the repeated clip everyone sobbed over for weeks, it was the first time we saw him really emotional. There was a mostly negative reaction to Erwin's reaction to Farlan and Isabel's deaths. And the cut "your wings are the real thing after all" was also a hot topic of discussion. ERUVIN SMISSU. Levi saying that, clip circulated for a while.

Despite its obvious flaws the ACWNR anime will always hold a special place in my heart because it was my gateway drug for the SnK manga and Eruri shipping. So even though I'm still pissed about Erwin's characterisation, I can't be too mad at it!

FINAL Shingeki no Kyojin / Attack on Titan Manga Exhibition - Nine Titans Display (English)

In addition to the main Japanese display of the Nine Titans at the FINAL Manga Exhibition, an English translation was provided as well for international visitors!
