flames head coach ryan huska on teaching:
aaand THIS is why old school asshat babcock, sutter type coaches aren't effective anymore. why mackinnon said these types of coaches are short-term bc you really can't scare ppl into playing well for 82 games over eight months. fuck yes. (see "communication" here)

OP did a great job with the drai side of the ask! thought i could add to the matty side, specifically:
Matthew is an outcast in his own team come from?
his flames days: yes he was loved but at the same time what led to him leaving was his style not being a fit for what the rest of the team was doing. Matty would get into fights to spur on team energy etc and there's this one instance where it came out that the rest of the team was fed up with having to bail him out all the time, that's how they saw it, they didn't want to "follow him into battle" type of play aaaallllll the freakin time. With Matty sticking around trying to get C post gio (mark giordano) but with that team vibe-- clearly not in the works, he cut his losses and got tf outta where his style of play didn't match and he had no chance of promotion.
Another factor was ex head coach darryl sutter. Old school hockey bad dismissive mental/emotionally distressing, tense throughout the whole org bc of him, vibes guy. Matthew was a big factor in the locker room for keeping it light & easygoing (as much as possible) for the team with that coach.
So with his bestie johnny gaudreau leaving calgary (he said to be closer to his family in the states), matty asked brad treliving for a trade and went about it pretty civilly. Tre still loves him very much, as does everyone in the league really, despite his style of play bc he's irritating on-ice but not viciously violent (unlike his bestie bennet, and cousins, who are deeply loathed throughout the league)
With the panthers: matthew's no longer the odd man out but rather the personality and vibes leader. It really was a dream trade for him and the team. And he's completely happy to not be C since he gets to be barky's A
Hello! Hope you are having a good day.
So I have a question for you, just ignore when you don't feel like answering.
I came to Mattdrai via the enemies/rivals to lovers tag and then got sucked into hockey. I really like the fanon take on Leon, fav character, fanon Matthew was fine but way too woobified and infantilized in so many fics. So my surprise when I started to watch games, interviews etc. Public Matthew is so confident, so loving, awesome family to back him up, especially Brady, hot as hell, sexy way of playing hockey, amazing public persona. Loved and respected by his team, beyond hockey.
Then Leon. His only trait seems to be that he's pissy which I can appreciate but it seems that he's just a downright mean, arrogant guy with a superiority complex (see that interview when he puts Silovs down.) I don't find him stoic at all but he's just seems boring and bland and yeah, pissy. It doesn't seem like he has fun or likes his team a lot or is liked by them (Connor aside and his skills aside.) His friendship with Connor seems the only endearing or likeable thing. He even looks good in a bland way and his hockey is while it's so skillful it's not hot and also I wonder why his dirty plays aren't called out more often.
So what do I miss? Where does great fanon Leon come from? Why is he written mostly so superior to Matthew and where comes the "his team likes Leon so much but Matthew is an outcast in his own team come from?) It's so far from what I gather from old and new interviews or games and I have watched a lot, also German interviews. I really would like to like Leon, shipping them had been more fun when I didn't find his public self so jarring. What do I not see what everyone else seems to get?
Sorry for the long ask! Have a great day and thank you
first off thank you for such a thought out ask! i don't get to dive into things like this a lot outside of writing fic and it got my brain gears going.
to get right into the bulk of this ask: i get what you are saying about leon. that can be the way he comes off for sure, and look everything i'm gonna say? i'm talking out of my ass here. i don't claim to know anything about him as a person besides what's publicly presented, and i don't have much right to theorize about why he is the way that he is, but i'd be lying if i said i didn't think about it. how would i write rpf otherwise, right 💀
i think he cares a lot. and i think sometimes he gets so wrapped up in things, how things should be, how he should be performing, etc, and when it doesn't go a certain way he gets frustrated and snarky (eg, pissy comments and such). but i don't see that being bad necessarily, especially when it's seems to come from such a team oriented state of mind. which, i dont think he dislikes his team at all? i think if anything, he has a sort of blind faith in his team, and that's the only context i could see a 'superiority complex' making sense in. and yah maybe a little misplaced at times, but ultimately i think it comes from believing so fully in his team and not seeing that come to fruition. he really does not seem to care about his individual performance much at all, so how self obsessed can he be? when i think about leon i just see someone that is ultimately very passionate and committed to the game he plays. i'm also curious to know where you get the vibe that his team doesn't like him? simply because i never got that impression from any of the other oilers, they all seem like they're obsessed with him.
beyond hockey, i see a caring, sweet, kindhearted individual. anytime i see a picture or vid of him interacting with bowie, or even the things his girlfriend posts about him, the comments he leaves for people on ig, and yah of course in the way he talks/acts around connor, i see fragments of someone soooo different than the little two minute post game interviews (which, can we judge any hockey player on those? i think they all hate them dfkjgsd). it's not always something i actively go digging for or have examples of the top of my head, but i do see it, and it definitely goes into creating the version of leon that i have in my mind.
hey, and, he's a silly guy!!! please, i know the reputation is pissy and humourless, ESPECIALLY in fic, but that man is so funny. so many random offhanded comments that make me pause and then laugh. a different sense of humour but it's so there. i love the sandcastle vid from the asg last year and feel like it's a good example of that, all sunburnt and happy. also hey, big man in tune with his fear of the ocean? love that. that little vid of him dancing on the ice earlier this season, those halloween photos where he's dressed as a monkey, every time he talks to a kid. hell, seeing him in warmups and watching the way he takes time to interact fans?? loveee watching warmups but i'd never had a player actually acknowledge my existence before leon!
also i really enjoy his personality on the ice, i like the rat behaviour and the sassy comments that he makes to other players/refs, i like the bitch moves, and i like his hockey too. i think his game is dependable and like you said skillful, and while maybe not the most creative, the sureness and the technical aspect it is hot to me. so my thoughts on everything are probably skewed in that regard.
anyways this was just a whole lot of rambling about why i find him interesting, endearing even, but i understand the perception you have. i don't like some players that other people love, just cause i cant see what they see. and honestly that's sometimes just the way it is! if you don't like leon, maybe u just don't like him and thats fine.
disclaimer that i have only been on hockeyblr for a couple years, and really didn't spare many thoughts for leon til the beginning of the 22/23 season. truthfully i'm hardly the person to ask about leon imo, but of course i have thoughts anyways! if someone else with more knowledge reads my bit of rambling here, please feel free to chime in and add your voice to this!
and side note, ofc, i have to touch on this bc who would i be if i'm not one to talk about matthew; in the way of m.tkachuk, i think that in the early days of mattdrai it was maybe a fair take away during his time with the flames (minus the woobifying). even though he was loved so much here and had some fucking times, and i think the team was mostly good to him (player wise if not regarding management, that is), i see such a stark difference now that he's on the panthers. he seems much happier and more confident, and obviously he's clicking with the cats on another level, and i do see a shift in how he's been portrayed in fics since tbh.

Hey, hope you're doing okay. I hope you don't mind me asking, but I am rather new to the mattdrai fandom and I couldn't help but wonder:
Was Matthew really as bad as a lot of fic lead to believe in his earlier hockey years in Calgary? And was he really disliked in the room - where there rumours like that? So many fics build on this premise, and seeing him now in Florida and hearing all the nice things his teammates say about him and seeing the things he does himself and the insane good hockey he plays... it's hard to believe.
It's so strange also that it's so rarely mentioned that Leon was the one to be sent down to the minors, not Matthew.
Plus what I don't get: matthew is a lot hotter than Leon? why is it always told like Leon is the hottest dude on earth while Matthew is nothing? comparing early pics and pics from now... it's just not true? Leon looks good, a bit bland IMO, but Matthew is and was just hot in a very unique and special way. maybe because he isn't that bland generic good looking Leon is? But good looking in a special way? so that got a lot longer than I thought it would, hope you don't mind the ask.
i don't mind you asking at all! this is basically my roman empire so MY apologies if this gets unwieldy but i have FEELINGS about matthew's early fic portrayal lmao
in his six years on the flames, matthew was always one of the top five scorers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
his rookie year, he was sixth in rookie scoring
Tumblr media
the season he was picked for his first ASG, the flames were 16th in the league at the time all star rosters were announced and matthew was their top scorer.
Tumblr media
so it's not like he was the best player from a bottom of the league team or going because he was the home town boy, he was a playoff team's best player (both at the asg break and when the season was eventually suspended because of covid).
and even in his career worst year (2020-2022), he ended the year as their third best scorer and only six points behind johnny (the leader). and as one of calgary's beat reporters said in his end of the year review, Matthew was "good, but not quite as good as the Flames needed him to be."
Tumblr media
so i've never really understood why people were portraying him like that either and still haven't figure out if most of it was unreliable narrator kind of stuff or if some authors actually thought he was bad before he had his breakout season, but it doesn't reflect reality.
as for him being disliked in calgary, that all stems from jake muzzin flipping the puck at him, and the subsequent players only meeting that took place after it, in which matthew allegedly told the team he was upset they didn't join him in the scrum after and he was then told him it can't be a riot every night.
before that there were never any rumors that i'm aware of that he was unliked in the room, and in 2019 gio, who most people tend to think is the one who told matthew to tone it down, said this about another players only meeting:
Tumblr media
so while the 2021 players only meeting was a story because matthew wasn't playing like his usual self afterward, i've never thought it was indicative of him not being liked by his teammates. and honestly, you have to take it all with a grain of salt anyway because while guys obviously bullshit the media, at the practice after the players only meeting guys talked about how there was a general lack of emotion, and how they came out there trying to have fun with each other and put it behind them, and in the postgame the next night, gio specifically sites getting into scrums and mixing it up when asked how much more emotion they played with in that win compared to earlier losses, so if mixing it up was good the very next night, the math doesn't quite add up, yk?
but johnny did confirm in his spittin chiclets appearance about two weeks after the muzzin incident that matthew was pissed after they left him out to dry that night, and when asked about matthew's struggles that season darryl sutter said matthew needed to, and would, get back to playing to his identity, so the whole cause and effect of the muzzin incident on matthew's play that season isn't completely unfounded, but i do think multiple guys saying the team needed to play with more emotion, johnny saying in the chiclets episode that the guys skating off didn't find out about the puck flip until they saw it on sportsnet and saying he felt bad about it, and the new coach coming in and getting matthew to play back to his style shows that it wasn't as personal as it was made out to be.
anyway, the flames may not have be as tight knit as the panthers are, but matthew had his people there. he's bffs with hanifin and his friendship with sam bennett is part of what drew him to florida. johnny always says great things about him, blake coleman called him the heartbeat of the team, and was such an important voice in the room that the flames suffered when he and gudbranson were no longer around to tell sutter to chill the fuck out when he was being too hard on guys in the room.
he probably wasn't close with every teammate, most people aren't friends with all their coworkers, but he wasn't some sort of loner in that locker room.
as for the looks, that's all down to personal preference. leon is definitely very conventionally attractive and while matthew has definitely glowed up in the last few seasons, he was by no means ugly. i wouldn't even say he's really unconventionally attractive either. he's got a good face and was a cute teen and people who are like "oh no i find matthew tkachuk attractive now" have literally never made sense to me. but again! personal preference and all that.
again, my apologies if you weren't looking for THIS MUCH of an answer to your question but this isn't even all the sources i pulled up when i first got this ask so i did TRY to keep it short lol

I don’t know if Auston attends many weddings tbh, he seems pretty quiet every off season. He only hangs out with his family and his Arizona friends in the summer. I only remember seeing him at the Kadri wedding (like 2017-18?) and one pic of him at a wedding in the summer 2019 his friend posted and that’s it. That’s a low number considering how many friends he has in the league/hockey world
And that right there makes me wonder about Leafs culture yet again. Yes they all love and respect each other but they're quite silo'd from each other eh?
Ofc i get wanting to draw a line bw work and personal. And aus right to do whatever he pleases in his off time
...but when you've got schenn coming in and setting up a full team dinner on an away game for the first time ever in this core's history. That's heartbreaking shocking facts. They're lovely and cordial and playful n whatnot like u are with coworkers u don't hate.... But when push comes to shove literally that is why they don't stand up for each other on the ice.
Like ok let's use the best example possible: matthew tkachuk. Dude shows up to Florida and immediately takes out the trainers for a meal and barky like ohhh helllsss yea this dude gets it. He gets team vibes. That's how they pushed n pulled each other to the SCF. That's how Calgary made anything happen despite the cruelty of sutter littered all about.
And ppl want Aus to be CAPTAIN????????? bffr
BE. FUCKING. FOR. REAL.
I had to spell it out bc acronyms just ain't enough in these trying times
Another example on a smaller scale-- willy hosting away game dinners for the Swedes. Those blond bitches are BONDED. Looking out for each other on the ice. Crying and weeping and cradling and walking each other out of arenas after getting traded mid practice
I'd rather have willy or mitchy as captain over jt or aus. I think u plop that level of responsibility at his feet mitchy would be like omg Steph babe pls setup team events for me?? U make cocktails right? Just booze us all up and take us ax throwing or whatever. And he'd worry his cute ass off about his little creatures
Or willy as captain?? That boy looks chill but he is dedicated and focused on every task and he would whip up a Google shared spreadsheet and calendar with his little round wire specs on and get everyone on the same page. And then he'd show up last to every one of his events ofc but dw its all setup by vendors & ready to go
... sigh. Ok lmao that got long.
MLSE wants everyone to stop focusing on the core? Well how about you give them a reason to care about anyone besides themselves
They have the skills. They've always had the skills. They need the culture

Thank you flames🙏❤️
watched both press conferences today-- treliving in tor, dubas in pitt-- and despite my internal soul clawing at kyle shrieking we used to be something!!😭😭 I'm like very taken by treliving and impressed and pretty excited to see where he takes the progressive analytics org kyle built over the past 5yrs as GM with all the silos (thx lou🙄) brought down and focus on care for the team and employees.
Thoughts on both:
I really loved what brad had to say in his leafs press conf.
Right off the top spoke about Calgary and thanked them
Believes in modern GM'ing of not bossing around from high up in the office building but getting to know the players
How Toronto really is something else from the inside, everyone has an idea of the team and city from the outside but its really something else from the inside (idk how to better explain this but it meant a lot to me, a toronto person who loves my city & the leafs)
Spoke highly of dubas (shanny has been speaking w pens quite a bit over the week as they've been interviewing kyle)
Spoke fondly of gio & brodie (lmao "gio still playing at 75"😂)
Many things are a priority but first order of business is talking to and getting to know auston before moving into the business side of things w him (he's texted w him only so far)
When asked about assistant GMs he may want to bring along w him, he only answered that he very much respects pridham and has already worked extensively w him when he was at coyotes and prid worked for the league and helped him A LOT almost like he was on az staff
When asked about how there has been talk about mlse reporting structure & lack of autonomy in decision-making that drove out dubas, shanny all no no GM makes the decisions...(🙄 We'll see shanny)
Asked about the tkachuk trade and brad called him his son!!🥹😭 Said he did it right with coming to him to tell him he didn't want to sign long-term but look elsewhere and so that's what brad did for him. Those things happen and you just deal with them.
And i was really filled w pride at the insight we got into kyle in his pens press conf.
What he learned from GMing at the soo😭❤️ omg that moment was so beautiful and cute🥹
That Toronto gave permission for Pitt to talk to kyle like pretty much immediately bc they got in touch the next morning after his firing announcement
When asked about who in scouting he'll rely on for the draft etc bc he can't possibly get to know everything in the org prior to the draft in a month, he was like uhhh as GM of a team in the same division I KEPT TABS ON Y'ALL NHL AND AHL i know who u gots *finger snap 😂
His philosophy for winning is building a team that can win in their own division bc those are the teams u play the most, so they can stay on top of the standings and easily get to the playoffs
Since it'll be difficult to get permissions to interview ppl for GM prior to the draft so soon, kyle will act as interim GM in the meanwhile and hire a GM a bit later
When asked about GM wants, first word out his mouth was progressive 😁 also that the person should bring strengths he himself does not have
He's only seen a bit of what the analytics dept has but he's for sure gonna be ramping it up to apply it to all aspects of hockey development, not just game analytics for sully
His wife Shannon encouraged him to entertain pens offer for an initial interview
Met 3 sets of ppl: first interview w owners, then sully & sid about where they think they team is at and what it needs, then jen & someone else(?) took him and his family around Pittsburgh and they really loved it that's what clinched it for kyle & shannon
Right off the top the owner introducing kyle called him kyle dobaaas. 😐😂
So flames, I'm sorry the flames owners let treliving go (and only afterwards finally let go of sutter). He seems wonderful. If we couldn't have our boy dubas back I'm glad we got brad, a highly competent fella, instead of an old hockeyman.
And pens, *deep breath* I'm holding your hand here we go on this journey-- oh did i not mention I'M IN YOUR WALLS NOW you don't just walk away with my kyle I'm coming with
Tumblr media
belated but, from a flames fan, i’d just like to wish the leafs fans best of luck with their new gm….😭

Was Hakstol a bad coach or do you think there are just personality/coaching style differences that lead to him being canned (hahaha get it?). Obviously this is speculative.
Both.
It's simple, and it's both.
A shorter Stereanalysis for you, under the cut!
All stats, except where noted, are taken from MoneyPuck.
Dave Hakstol was a Jack Adams finalist last year. Generally, the Jack Adams and its finalist positions are given to those coaches who manage to engineer great one-year improvements in their team (see: Lindy Ruff [NJD 22-23], Darryl Sutter [CGY 21-22], Alain Vigeneault [PHI 19-20]). And often, these coaches cannot keep this level of success the next year and then summarily get canned (see: Lindy Ruff [NJD 22-23], Darryl Sutter [CGY 21-22], Alain Vigeneault [PHI 19-20]). (Trust me, half the Jack Adams candidates are out quick within 1-2 seasons after. These are just the more egregious.)
Seattle caught fire with an unsustainable 22-23 season. This is true. The 23-24 season was also slightly uncharacteristically bad regression from the team. It highlighted:
- They have one of the worst shooting% in the league. 7.68% 5 on 5 is fifth worst in the NHL, only above the actual bottom feeders (CHI, SJS, ANA) and, somehow, FLA. All situations, it's 9.11%, fourth worst (CHI, PHI, SJS are below SEA).
(Interestingly, they are the most blocked team in the NHL, with 30.82% of their shots being blocked in all situations. Additionally, 32.64% of their unblocked shots miss the net in all situations. This is fourth worst in the NHL, with only CAR, VAN, and SJS with more.)
- Tied into the last point, they cannot score. 2.57 goals for per 60 in all situations is fourth worst in the NHL (CHI, SJS, ANA are even worse). 5 on 5, this is 2.11 and fifth worst (SJS, CHI, ANA, WSH).
(Another thing that doesn't help is a 47.52% faceoff percentage. It's only eighth worst in the league, but winning faceoffs helps establish possession, leading to scoring chances.)
- They're also not generating high-danger or medium-danger chances. SEA is third worst in all situations high-danger shots for, at 252, tied with WSH (usual suspects CHI and SJS top the list). They're fourth worst in all situations medium-danger shots for, at 575, tied with DET (usual suspects CHI, ANA, SJS above). Sixth and eighth worst, respectively, at 5 on 5.
- Plus, they go on losing skids. A lot. I counted at least five separate 4+ game losing streaks. 2 were 8-game losing streaks. Outside of the 1 9-game winstreak, Seattle failed to string more than 2 wins in a row all season.
- Running Daccord dry does not help. 23 starts in 25 games is batshit.
There's a few other issues, too. Let's talk about those.
Seattle's success in 2022-23 was strongly due to their ability to "roll four lines". Generally, on a hockey team, your top two lines are offensive. Your third line is a "checking" line that shuts down other teams' top sixes while offering a few goals in a pinch. Your fourth line is an "energy" line that plays short sprint shifts to "disrupt" other teams.
Seattle had one of the best fourth lines last year with Donato-Geekie-Sprong, who were highly effective at their roles plus contributed meaningful offense (27, 29, 46 points, respectively). Seattle got rid of all three in the offseason last year (CHI-BOS-DET, respectively), which considerably thinned out their four-line assault. Replacements such as Yamamoto, Tatar, and Bellemare have struggled and been unable to find lasting success.
Additionally, Seattle's been having trouble developing its kids. When the entire team went through a points drought this year, its new-era star Beniers was hit severely, going from 57 points and a Calder last year to 37 this year. Wright, too, has not had meaningful NHL time yet, which is concerning for a former consensus 1OA. While Seattle's strategy was never to "contend now", and it did not anticipate looking like a solid contender in 22-23, it did not adjust to this newer timetable and thus took a massive step back. This is what got Hakstol canned.
Interestingly, the "character" remarks seem to be refuted by Ron Francis (the GM) as well as Eberle and McCann, all of whom went to bat for Hakstol and said nobody "threatened" not to play for Hakstol if he remained the coach of the Kraken. I'm sure there's some truth to it, but, at the end of the day, Hakstol just did a bad job coaching.

Determining the "best" Calgary Flames team is subjective and can vary depending on personal preferences and criteria. However, there are a few notable Flames teams that stand out in the franchise's history:
1988-1989 Calgary Flames: This team is widely regarded as the best in Flames history. Coached by Terry Crisp, the Flames finished the regular season with a record of 54-17-9, capturing the Presidents' Trophy for the best regular-season record. Led by captain Lanny McDonald, Joe Nieuwendyk, Al MacInnis, and goaltender Mike Vernon, the Flames had a memorable playoff run. They reached the Stanley Cup Finals, where they defeated the Montreal Canadiens in a thrilling six-game series to win their first and only Stanley Cup championship.
2003-2004 Calgary Flames: Coached by Darryl Sutter, this Flames team had a successful regular season, finishing second in the Western Conference. Jarome Iginla led the team with his scoring prowess, and Miikka Kiprusoff provided stellar goaltending. The Flames made an impressive playoff run, reaching the Stanley Cup Finals. Although they ultimately lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in a hard-fought seven-game series, this team's resilience and strong defensive play made them a memorable group.

Okay Brady's anecdote about Matthew breaking the rules during COVID and sneaking to the other hotel to play beer pong with Brady and Timmy makes me emotional. It really adds up to what Darryl Sutter said about Matthew seeming really sad all the time during the pandemic games because you could tell he missed being near family.
This is all very true but I think the funniest part of this whole thing is that within the covid protocols for that season, matthew and brady were allowed to visit each other as immediate family members, either brady doesn't remember that or he glossed over the protocols and really thought matthew snuck out of his hotel to visit him

Mark Schiefele has Darryl Sutter energy in that you can do all right things politically but you’re still more known for being an asshole
