John Steinbeck was particularly enamored with the performance of Henry Fonda as Tom Joad, feeling that he perfectly encapsulated everything he wanted to convey with this character. The two became good friends. Indeed Fonda did a reading at Steinbeck's funeral.

#design for living #trouble in paradise #is tied with the seventh seal for my favorite film #ernst lubitsch #miriam hopkins #she's not a great actress but she's so fun to watch #ditto about #herbert marshall #and while we're at it #kay francis #but given good scripts and direction and appropriate roles they could make magic #(also stealth jane darwell)#(she's in the end credits for design for living and i was like wait what)#(i haven't seen all his films so i can't swear to it but trouble in paradise is arguably the one time charlie ruggles was actually funny)#also i love how lubitsch is like if you don't know italian french german and spanish #you'll get by watching this movie but those bits are not for you
