In 1996, I had a crush on Kelli Dayton Ali's voice. Her voice is an ASMR experience, for me. It sounds like that feeling after really good sex. It sounds like the taste of good whiskey and a cigarette. It sounds like . . . a moment.

Angie Dickinson and Lee Marvin in Point Blank (John Boorman, 1967)
Cast: Lee Marvin, Angie Dickinson, John Vernon, Sharon Acker, Keenan Wynn, Carroll O'Connor, Lloyd Bochner, Michael Strong, James Sikking. Screenplay: Alexander Jacobs, David Newhouse, Rafe Newhouse,
based on a novel by Donald E. Westlake (as Richard Stark). Cinematography: Philip H. Lathrop. Art direction: Albert Brenner, George W. Davis. Film editing: Henry Berman,
With its non-linear storytelling and audaciously post-realist tricks of style, Point Blank clearly shows the influence of the great French and Italian filmmakers of the 1960s, but even though its director was a Brit whose only previous non-documentary film was Having a Wild Weekend (1965), an attempt to do for the Dave Clark Five what A Hard Day's Night (Richard Lester, 1963) did for the Beatles, it's unquestionably an American movie. Its loner antihero, Walker (Lee Marvin), is straight out of American Westerns, and the two cities it shifts between, San Francisco and Los Angeles, are the American final frontier. That any studio, let alone MGM, would allow John Boorman and Marvin to make Point Blank what it is -- an eccentric spin on a familiar genre -- shows how the Hollywood studio system had imploded. It's a film full of outrageous moments: Walker bursting into Lynne's (Sharon Acker) apartment and emptying his revolver into an unoccupied bed. Walker fastening his seat belt -- in the days before shoulder belts and mandated buckling up -- and embarking on a one-car demolition derby with Stegman (Michael Strong) in the passenger seat. Walker dumping a naked Reese (John Vernon) from a penthouse balcony. Chris (Angie Dickinson) pummeling an immovable Walker with her purse and her fists before collapsing in exhaustion. It has showoffy tricks: The pock pock pock pock of Walker's heels as he strides down an airport corridor, a sound that's carried over even after he's left the hallway. The often psychedelic color effects, like Chris's day-glo wardrobe or the closeup of the multicolored perfumes in the bottles that have shattered in the bathtub after Walker swept them from the shelves. Its plot stretches credibility to the breaking point: How did Walker survive being shot at, yes, point blank range and then get away from Alcatraz? This alone has served as the focus of countless attempts at interpretation: Is Walker a ghost? Or is what happens after he's shot the revenge fantasy of a dying man? In short, Point Blank is a glorious mess, made into an enduring work of fascination and puzzlement by wonderful performances, particularly by Marvin and Dickinson. Is it a great film or just an enduring cult movie? I tend to the latter view, but it's bloody fun in either case.

Word Magnets Westlake Eco Estate Meaning Abstract Photography Word magnets was created by Dave Kapell, the founder of Magnetic Poetry, which was the name of the company that first started manufacturing and distributing these word kits. According to Dave Kapell, he was a writer suffering from writers block while trying write new song lyrics. As inspiration he started writing words down on little pieces of paper, rearranging them on a surface in front of him. Due to his allergies, they went flying across the room when he sneezed. According to Dave, he then decided to glue the words to a magnet and stuck them to a pizza tin (did not know you get pizza in a tin). Apparently, he got hungry and they ended up on the fridge door. When he had some friends visiting, Dave noticed that they were moving the words around, making their own word poems, thus the word magnet came into creation, of which the first 100 sets rapidly somd out at a local craft fair. Word magnets hit the market by storm since their first commercial release. The original set has grown to a kid’s line of kits, foreign language kits and over 100 themed kits. Millions of sets has since been sold. (at Westlake Eco Estate) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cfhxn2etjf2/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Braves At A Glance- The Atlanta Braves went (35-25) won win their third consecutive National League East Division. The Braves are looking like the dominant teams of the 1990′s and have done it in a different way pitching-wise this season. The Braves offense was very strong this season. Freddie Freeman and Marcell Ozuna are MVP candidates. Freeman hit .341 to lead the team with thirteen homers and fifty-three RBI’s. Marcell Ozuna hit .338 with eighteen homers and fifty-six RBI’s. Both guys have slowed down this postseason, but pitchers are keying on those two hitters. Travis d’Arnaud is having a great postseason. He is hitting .421 with two homers and seven RBI’s in five games. Dansby Swanson has also smacked two homers during the playoff run. The pitching staff looks very different from last season or even the start of this season. Mike Foltynewicz cleared waivers and was optioned to the alternate training site. Dallas Keuchel left in free agency to the White Sox. Felix Hernandez opted out of the season. Mike Soroka tore his Achilles and is out for the season. Sean Newcomb struggled and is not on the postseason roster. Max Fried, Ian Anderson, and Kyle Wright have been tremendous in the playoffs, which is why the Braves have advanced. The Braves bullpen is awesome and has allowed just one run in 20 1/3 innings in the postseason. Mark Melancon, Will Smith, AJ Minter, Shane Green, and Darren O’Day all form a great bullpen.
The Dodgers At A Glance- The Dodgers have a World Series or bust mentality again this season. They swept the Brewers in two low scoring games then took all three games from the Padres in an emotional series. The Dodgers will now square off against the Braves in what should be a fun series full of young talent. Mookie Betts has produced in the playoffs again and is hitting .368. Cody Bellinger has found his stroke after a rough regular season. he is hitting .316 in October. Justin Turner has slumped a bit, but knocked in three runs against the Padres. The Dodgers have just two home runs as a team in the playoffs, but they are doing the little things when guys are on base. They are hitting 16-for-51 (.313) with runners in scoring position in the postseason. Clayton Kershaw has been tremendous in the playoffs. He has thrown fourteen innings, struck out nineteen and allowed three runs in his two starts. Walker Buehler has done well, but Dave Roberts has pulled back the reigns with his blister issue. Julio Urias has done a great job as well. Dustin May should get a start in a longer series this time around. Kenley Jansen struggled a bit in the last series and it is undetermined who will close for the Dodgers. Brusdar Graterol certainly has the stuff to close along with Blake Treinen, Joe Kelly, and Pedro Baez, who have late inning experience.
What To Watch For- The Dodgers went (4-2) against the Braves in 2019. They swept them in a three-game series in early-May then lost two out of three games in mid-August. The Braves and Dodgers have squared off in three prior series in the playoffs. The Braves swept the Dodgers in the 1996 NLDS then the Dodgers won three out of four games in the 2013 NLDS. Los Angeles won three out of four games in the 2018 NLDS and are (6-5) against Atlanta in the playoffs. Max Fried is (0-2) with a 6.55 ERA in three career starts against the Dodgers. He went to high school at Harvard Westlake in Los Angeles. Walker Buehler is (2-0) with a 2.92 ERA in two starts against the Braves. Clayton Kershaw is (5-0) with a 1.78 ERA in eleven career starts against Atlanta. Will Smith owns a 3.13 ERA in 24 games against the Dodgers. Mark Melancon has allowed just three runs in 30 1/3 career innings versus the Dodgers. The keys to this series will be how the young Braves starters do and who they pick to start the fourth game. The Dodgers will need to iron out who will be closing games for them in this series. The Dodgers win this series in six games and move onto the World Series.

Mistaken for mass killer, man recalls shot 'like a sonic boom' as RCMP fired at him
David Westlake is an unbelievably lucky man who still wonders what saved him when two Mounties mistook him for a killer and opened fire.
On the morning of April 19, 2020, the emergency management coordinator was at the firehall in Onslow, N.S., as the fire chief was welcoming people evacuated from nearby Portapique, N.S., where a gunman had killed 13 people the night before.
At the time, the killer was still at large and his rampage wasn't over. He would kill a total of 22 people before being shot by police later that day.
At 10:17 a.m., as Westlake was chatting with an RCMP officer parked in front of the building, he watched in disbelief as a car screeched to a halt about 80 metres away and two men emerged with rifles. As both took aim at him, he made a dash for the firehall.
"I remember a shot that sounded like a sonic boom and then another one that was really loud, and I'm moving at this time," Westlake told a public inquiry investigating the worst mass shooting in modern Canadian history.
The two shooters were RCMP officers who mistakenly assumed Westlake was the killer, mainly because he was wearing a yellow-and-orange reflective vest that matched the police description of what the suspect was wearing.
Westlake's dramatic account of what happened that day was given to an inquiry investigator on June 15, 2021. The release Monday of a document that includes excerpts from that interview marks the first time the public has heard Westlake's version of events.
"Do not ask me what deity had their hand on my shoulder that day and made sure it wasn't my time," Westlake said in the interview.
The inquiry document also highlights the confusion that RCMP officers faced as they pursued the killer for more than 100 kilometres. Two Mounties fatally shot him at a gas station north of Halifax at 11:26 a.m.
As for Westlake, he said he still couldn't believe he escaped with his life, though the close call had not hurt his sense of humour.
"I was just a fat guy in the wrong place at the wrong time wearing a vest," he told the inquiry investigator. "I've never had malice to the two individuals that pulled the trigger. I want to meet them. I want to ask them how they missed, because I can't hide behind telephone poles."
Still, the document raises awkward questions for the RCMP, which has said little about the almost-lethal blunder.
Just before Const. Terry Brown and Const. Dave Melanson showed up in Onslow, Westlake was standing in the front lot talking to RCMP Const. Dave Gagnon, who was behind the wheel of a marked cruiser, a vehicle almost identical to the getaway car being used by the killer.
Both Brown and Melanson told inquiry investigators they did not see Gagnon in the car.
Before the two officers jumped out of their unmarked Nissan Altima, Melanson tried several times to use a police radio to report what they were seeing. But instead of getting a clear signal to broadcast, Melanson said the radio "bonged," which meant that the frequency had been jammed by too many users.
The Serious Incident Response Team, Nova Scotia's police watchdog agency, released a report in March 2021 that cleared both officers of any wrongdoing. It concluded the officers had reasonable grounds to believe they had the killer in their sights, and that they discharged their weapons "to prevent further deaths or serious injuries." The independent agency also drew attention to the jammed radios.
Melanson said he, like Brown, believed the man in the reflective vest was the killer. "I've got my carbine on the guy and I'm yelling to him, 'Show me your hands!"' Brown told the inquiry's investigators last month.
"And he's looking at me and then he ducks behind the car, and I was sure he was getting a gun. And I thought he was going to kill us. I thought he was going to kill others .... And he started running."
Westlake, however, told investigators he did not hear anyone say, "Show me your hands." He said the only thing he heard, aside from gunshots, was someone saying, "Get down!"
As well, eight people living near the firehall told investigators about what they saw that day, and none of them reported hearing anyone say, "Show your hands!"
In all, investigators found Brown fired four rounds at Westlake, and Melanson fired once. Two rounds pierced one of the station's garage doors and damaged a fire truck inside. A third round hit a roadside sign and another hit the side of the firehall. The fifth round hit a stone monument near the door that Westlake used to escape.
As for Gagnon -- the constable in the cruiser -- the document says he tried to use his radio to alert the other two officers about his identity, saying, "You guys are pointing your guns at me." But the transcript from the broadcasts that day suggest the transmission did not get through.
All that was recorded was Gagnon saying: "You got that -- Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!" and "Who are you shooting at? It's Gagnon!"
When the shooting stopped, Gagnon emerged from his vehicle with his hands up. After a brief exchange with the two other officers, he and Melanson went inside the station, where Westlake told them no one had been injured.
Neither Brown nor Melanson checked on the others inside the firehall, who included fire Chief Greg Muise, Deputy Chief Darrell Currie and evacuee Richard Ellison, whose son Corrie had been murdered in Portapique.
Westlake would later recall that he had spotted an RCMP cruiser with a black push-bar on the front driving past the firehall at 10:07 a.m. That vehicle matched the description of the killer's vehicle, but the RCMP did not release that information to the public until they sent a tweet at 10:17 a.m. -- roughly the same time the unmarked car arrived at the firehall.
There's no indication that Gagnon saw the suspect's car.
This report by The Canadian Press was first published April 11, 2022.
