I <3 secondhand characterization. Like when two unlikely characters are besties and that fact alone says so much more about both of them than anything they do on their own ever could.

An often overlooked aspect of character and relationship building is the question: "How do the characters adress each other?"
It's a surprisingly interesting facet of DS9. I think Worf not once calls Quark by his name, it's always "the Ferengi".
Rom calls him only "Quark", I think, once or twice in the whole run of DS9. Otherwise it's always "Brother" or "my Brother". While Quark uses "my Brother" mostly derogatively, but when things get ugly, he says "Rom!"
[For all people reading this not familiar with Star Trek, another example: When Dean Winchester says "Sammy" you know things are escalating horribly.]
If someone knows an instance where Worf calls Quark by his name, let me know. I am looking for this for years. Maybe I heard it in the german translation.
Sisko is always called "Ben" by colleagues, which looks like an intimate name. Until you realize that he is called "Benjamin" only by his most intimate familiar, Dax. And mockingly and twisted, by Dukat. His full name is his pet name, while the abbreviated version is his more distanced, regular used name. Awesome detail.
Odo even mocks Kira for being interested in Chief O'Brien. Excuse me, I mean "Miles" 😉 In my own comic (not Star Trek related, I'm not brave enough for that), I, as the time of writing this, have only three characters on screen. And I put a lot of thought into the question: How do they adress each other? And even made a bit of fun of it.
Why am I telling you all this? Because Garak and Bashir have a very interesting dynamic. Firstly, there is not one instance of Bashir calling Garak "Elim". Garak calls him "Doctor Bashir" or the classic "my dear Doctor".
Now when we imagine Garak telling Julian how he actually doesn't like him (at all!) and then he says "ok bye. Julian. wink wink 😉" I don't really know if it would feel out of character for Garak. Damn, somebody get Andrew Robinson on the phone and pay him to say it.
If Garak does it slowly with a thick, chocolady sarcastic tone and smirk, I think it would work. But it would also make him VERY vulnerable, no matter how he tries to overplay it. Which would be an interesting scene, to say the least. So it would have the need to feel earned.
It would also be an interesting callback to early twink Bashir, hopelessly in need of human(oid) connection. He forcefeeds Kira the "HEY KIRA I'M JULIAN CALL ME JULIAN! SAY IT!!! JUUUUUUUUULIAN!" stuff very early on. At the end of the Julian and the Federation Ambassadors-Episode, they respect him and call him Julian.
So Garak denying him that indulgence is an interesting trait. And if you're still reading this with me, maybe you agree on that. It's important to notice how our characters adress each other.
Garak denies Julian the un-formality of the first name (what Julian desperately craves), and would propably be shocked or even angry in return, if Julian himself called him "Elim".
What I'm saying it, it would be a big deal. Closing a speech with "Julian" could break that delicate balance and dynamic. Maybe it would work. Maybe it wouldn't.
I would love to hear what Siddig or Andrew think about the question. Or anyone other than the voices debating this in my head. Do you have other examples for this?

What Jellycat Plushies Would Each DS9 Crew Member have?
why? why not? (basically just my headcanons of these)
BASHIR - Now, Bashir is going first because he's really only one of two main officers I can see owning these on their own accord. Bashir would 100% pick the rainbow (for obvious reasons), but also because it's bright and cheerful, and lightens up the DS9 cabins.
Tumblr media
DAX - Dax, like Bashir, I can also see loving Jellycats. She'd have quite the collection, and I imagine she'd have a fun time picking them out as gifts. Her favorite would definitely be the dragon, both because it's awesome, as well as obnoxiously large (20 in).
Tumblr media
KIRA - Kira would have a ladybug, just because.
Tumblr media
SISKO - He'd definitely have the sun, probably because it's space-related but also cheerful. This may be a gift from Dax, and she'd probably get a kick out of his reaction. (He'd roll his eyes, but still love it)
Tumblr media
ODO - Odo would have this little clementine fellow. He'd just sorta appear one day, and sits on the edge of Odo's desk (much to Quark's dismay, who resorts to making remarks about how similar they look).
Tumblr media
WORF - Now, I was waffling between two potential Worf reactions to the Jellycat situation. 1.) He'd be pleasantly amused by them, likely because Dax is so fond of them, so he has to at least put up with them, too. 2.) He'd be completely unnerved by them, so much so that Dax begins hiding a single plush everywhere that he visits, just to scare him (which works). The civil response (1) is represented by the plum, who Worf would get along with. The fear response (2), is none other than the egg.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MILES - Miles would get a Jellycat as a gift, and not really know what to do with it. Maybe Molly would suggest bringing him to work, but one way or another Miles would grow to love the little guy, and start talking to him about power conduits and the shield generator.
Tumblr media
KEIKO - Keiko would just adore Jellycats, especially all the botany ones (Bonsai, Orchid, etc.) I picked the daffodil just because it seemed like what Molly would pick for her, too!
Tumblr media
GARAK - A gift from Bashir, because he "has his eyes" <3
Tumblr media
QUARK - I imagine Quark would be the one selling all these, so he'd have to have an example of the merchandise, right? (at least, that's what he keeps saying...)
Tumblr media
Sorry for my rambling, anyways, hope you can tell I just adore jellycats <3

So if Threshold happens to different Trek crews, who gets who pregnant? Voyager is one of the few shows where it makes heterosexual sense, (for lack of a better word, "sense" not being the word anyone would use to describe threshold)
So for Voyager, it being Paris (pilot) and Janeway (captain) makes sense through that lens. Paris, sure, because he is a pilot. We could pick a Science Guy to do it, but then it might be B'Elanna who does the flying fast, and then who is she going to kidnap for Lizard Sex? Harry? ... Yeah it'd be Harry. Anyway once you've picked Paris, you've got to figure out which woman is funniest to have him abduct into Lizardry. B'Elanna? No, not funny enough. She'd be a Klingon lizard and beat him up instead of mating, even if they did get married later. Besides, what if she evolves into a super-advanced Klingon, not a lizard? *claps* PUT TUVOK ON THE SHUTTLE. Kes? No, they already did a Tom v Neelix episode. Seven of Nine isn't on the show yet, so Janeway it is.
Ok so for other shows, we gotta pick a pilot or science guy (who might be screwing around with transwarp, and thus get Lizarded) and someone they could turn into a lizard to have babies with. The show is assuming heterosexual pairings here, but we know about things so we are not so limited.
The original series: as much as I'd love to say Sulu and Uhura ("I'll save you, fair maiden!" "sorry, neither"), I think TOS was much less of an ensemble than later Treks, so it'd need to be Spock. Spock is doing some science stuff, he gets hyper-evolved, and he picks someone else to hyper-evolve and turn into his lizard bride. As much as I want to say "Kirk", I think it's more likely that he runs off with Uhura and then Kirk has to rescue them. Kirk was always about being the one who rescues people, having the Enterprise come rescue Lizard!Spock (is that antisemitic?) and Lizard!Kirk and it's called commanded by McCoy? Nah.
TNG: the direct analogy to VOY would mean we have Wesley and... Picard? No, no, and no. Sorry. Frankly, we already had this plot on TNG (Genesis), and canonically the answer is Worf and Troi. The problem with it being a pilot thing is that Wesley is a child and Data (the official science guy) is an android, so he can't really be hyper-evolving. We could go with Geordi, the other Science Guy, but then we've got the image of a black man kidnapping a white woman. Uhhhh no. We already did that episode and it is an example of Deep Shame for the show. So Worf and Troi it is.
DS9: so this is what inspired me to make this post. We all agree Sisko would be a damn good father to his lizard babies, but would it be him? If so, with who? You could have it be Dax, and she lizards first and kidnaps him, which makes some sense given that she's a Science Guy. But you also have to consider Weird Guys. Every Trek series needs a Weird Guy so that whenever an ancient alien artifact turns the whole crew into Muppets or whatever, they can be the one who isn't affected and can thus solve it. This is all to say, Odo/Kira could be done. We've had a few episodes where he's been shown to do very extreme things out of his pining for her, so it makes some sense. Odo/Quark would be funnier but given how the DS9 writers handled Profit and Lace, I really don't want to see them do a gay mpreg episode.
ENT: the series with canon mpreg! Direct translation of would be Mayweather/Archer. Mmm. Probably not. I think it's gonna be a rarepair: Trip/Hoshi. Trip/T'Pol is too canon to be funny. The next best option is Archer/T'Pol and that's just kinda bleh. It makes sense but it's just the kind of thing they'd do and it'd be bland. We can do better. Honorary mention: Trip and Reed.
I've not watched enough of the New Treks to have an opinion there. Maybe SNW: Ortegas and La'an. Don't ask why.

I would have loved to see Jadzia central episodes after she got together with Worf, and ones that's didn't focus on their relationship only. There was so much more to her before and then it seemed like being very immersed in everything Klingon was one of her very few traits.
yes--I absolutely agree. probably not the first to say it. she becomes this quirky, hot sidekick/girlfriend in season 5. how they wrote worf and dax getting together was cute and "screwball comedy" but they sort of tried to keep up that energy but not as successfully (screwball banter is cute only when both parties are getting jabs in equally, and dax seems to just smile like worf is being cute when he accuses her being ridiculous all the time)(like i said, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't)(it's just when it doesn't, worf comes across as annoying and dax comes off as Not a person). she's around quite a bit, offering her quips and support and playing her role in other people's journey's...
but episodes that are about her and depend on some issue she has within herself are not present after the romance. not like "rejoined" or the episode where she's being accused of murder bc of curzon. of course, of the episodes that are about her in previous seasons, all of them except "rejoined," arguably, are about her struggling with some past self. while i think the character can go beyond that simple sci-fi-what-if design (like, for example, i think spock goes beyond the alien-conceit in most of the spock-centric episodes), i found myself missing even that watching everything after she and worf get together. if they had even drawn out that romance and showed her genuinely trying to get worf's attention for more than one or two episodes, that would've been more interesting then what ended up happening.
i also sort of get that ds9 isn't so much the "new world" part of star trek as the "new civilization"---that is, it's mostly focused on ongoing diplomacy and war plots with the same handful of richly made-up peoples. but they managed in previous seasons to still write episodes about discovery and scientific work. in season 5, scientific work all seems to be focused on julian, due to the exigency of his role, rather than dax, or both of them. like, within the typical star trek roles to play, the science officer drives the fun discovery and new-weird-stuff plots. instead of episodes about any of that in season 5, though, there's a lot of quark and odo and sisko and julian and worf all juggling their various definitions of identity. (miraculously, dax never seems to waver in that regard. with kira, it's debateable.) which. fine. it was all interesting.
i do think that the show still manages to show dax as someone particular and complex--the writing just doesn't genuinely explore any of it after writing the worf/dax relationship. the moments she does have in episodes not about her are for the most part very good and very interesting and she provides context and wisdom and motive in the way her role dictates. but the fact that i think her character is so fascinating and has so many rich options for sci-fi storytelling only makes the absence of stories focused or driven by her all the more frustrating to me. there's only so many episodes about odo's feelings i can retain interest in.
maybe give jadzia a planet to explore with a bunch of geode formations that emit a protein that causes mutations within biological creatures to cease which somehow causes changelings to crystallize while the protein is in their system and jadzia has to fight on behalf of the planet to just exist so it's not turned into a super-weapon against the dominion and this turns into a struggle with basically her and julian against everyone (they're the most idealistic) and causes real tension between kira and dax for the first time ever and sisko has to say something about how life is sacred and resources are sacred and one has to choose and then dax does something that can't be taken back and the creatures give her a small geode/collection-of-geode-creatures in thanks and she carries it around like she carries all her past-selves.
(which would then justify the way worf constantly seems to characterize her as impulsive and impractical or whatever. bc she did this one dramatic thing that no one can now forget about her. and she just takes it bc she would do it again. and the audience just doesn't know who to agree with.)(but that would make her person with deep conviction and interiority and some perhaps truly un-likeable traits. instead of the hot, smirky-quirky jester that gets men 18-24 to tune the fuck in once a week.)

☄️ and 🍽️
Wonderful ask game!
It's so good! for ☄️ - Your headcanon/s about a favourite character.
A lot of the way I headcanon in general is very strongly informed by actors' opinions on their characters (except when it's like, some aspects of, y'know, Dean Winchester, etc). So as an example, I factor ASIT into my interpretations of Garak. But ofc beta canon is not canon, actor opinions aren't canon, so I tend to want to caveat when saying this that I do not expect other fans to think similarly or that it's a "correct" take in any way. It's just how I like to do it and I do it pretty consistently. A headcanon I have that is not in that vein though, is that I think Julian loves Jadzia Dax/has romantic feelings and attraction that don't really ever go away and that he also deeply values her friendship and cares about her beyond any specific shape their dynamic might take—like what he says in Distant Voices: "I do have feelings for her, but the important thing is she's my friend. You know? Friend? And I wouldn't exchange that friendship for anything." So for me, his feelings coming back up via Quark fucking with him during a tongo match and then the show further focusing on it when Jadzia is trying to have a baby doesn't feel particularly out of character, particularly with him being someone who can have pretty quick strong emotional reactions without managing to put them into a helpful context in his thoughts for a while sometimes. for 🍽️ - What alien food/drink would you want to try? Like a lot of folks it's gonna be raktajino for me. I like coffee and have a high tolerance for caffeine, so I would love to know!

About the tags
Posts are tagged with the #’d phrases below. Clicking the underlined tag phrase or tag description will take you to all posts for that tag. These phrases are designed to provide a method for searching without clogging up a character’s or ship’s main tag. (Relatedly, if any one of these tags is already in common use and we didn't realize it, you can let us know and we'll change our tag to make it more arcane! Our tags are more for organization and navigation within this blog than anything else.)
Posts can also be searched for using multiple categories. (Example: searching on the blog's search bar for “garakbashirfic citrusfic” will get you all Garak/Bashir fics that are also NC-17.)

Notes on tagging philosophy
Content warnings listed in posts on this blog are primarily based on the author's own notes and fic summaries and other original metadata that we could find. Please tread carefully and assume that ALL fics are tagged incompletely. There were not the same tagging requirements or norms on these archives as there are on ao3.
Some tags have been added by us on top of what the author or original archive reported themselves. We wanted to strike a balance between giving enough information about a fic that readers could decide whether a fic interested them without making our own subjective judgments of fic content. We also didn't always have time to read every word of every fic. As such, our tagging focuses were: character and ship tags; setting (e.g., mirrorverse, AU, pre-/post-canon) and format (e.g. poetry, drabble, filk/song parody), as these were easy to tell at a glance; and content warnings for things that would require a major archive warning on ao3 (not all fics were checked thoroughly, and these are sometimes subjective, so please still assume inconsistency in our tagging). The more subjective sorts of tags or notes, such as those indicating genre (e.g. angst, humor, hurt/comfort), were not added unless the author specified them.
Also, sometimes even author-specified tags were listed under "reader-provided tags" if they were not warnings related to the rating (types of author-provided tags that might show up in reader-provided tags include tags about genre, format, subject matter, related episode title, and the name of the original zine publication or fandom challenge it was written for).

So I was going through a list of Archetypes for ‘reasons’ and I realized that out of all of the Treks DS9 has the most Archetype characters.
Sisko- the chosen one
Dax- the wise man
Kira- the rebel
Odo- the lawman/justice
Quark- the criminal
O'Brien- the everyman
Julian- (debatable, in early seasons and to a lesser extend) The innocent/The naive
If you try and find archetypes for other shows you can. ‘Kirk- the leader’ for example, but it just struck me that ds9 fits the mold in a more pointed way and now I'm wondering if it's coincidence or on purpose.

[tv review] ds9 1x04-1x08 (1993)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ds9 threatening me with a good time.
1x04 “a man alone”
if you’re like me you want to write this one off for being principally about odo being so oppressed because *checks notes* it looks like he may have used his position as a cop to murder someone and then chafed at being removed from the investigation of a murder for which he is clearly the prime suspect, like regardless of whether he is or not he obviously needed to be taken off that case like a million years earlier than he was? and him being so butthurt about it is just wild?
seriously the main plot of this episode is just infuriating. and the secondary plot of keiko becoming a schoolteacher is… not that much better? like, you cannot convince me that ds9 wouldn’t materially benefit from an arboretum, and even if you wanted to take her character this direction, having her just kinda wander around scowling disapprovingly at all the children on the station is also just about the worst way you could’ve chosen to get there? so in one corner we have just absolutely wild copaganda, and in the other we have a bad idea poorly executed. super.
the problem is, this is also the episode that started jake & nog’s iconic friendship, so you can’t just totally write it off without losing something pretty vital to the series. not that their first few interactions were anything all that special, and it’s rather interesting seeing rom pop up in these early episodes because they clearly just had no idea who he was yet, but regardless jake & nog’s relationship is just such a big part of the show and one of the all-time great trek friendships in its own right, so you can’t just totally ignore this episode unfortunately.
also there’s some good quark/odo stuff and no matter how much odo infuriates me, i do certainly love how blatantly those two are husbands.
but yeah, y’know. the rest of it is still pretty awful. acab. c-rank
1x05 “babel”
there are kind of way too many episodes of season 1 that follow this basic format nearly beat for beat, but the aphasia virus is so novel that it kind of pushes this one to the top of the pack among those at least. plus we get a pretty awesome example of kira just bulldozing her way to a solution, which is pretty much always gonna be a plus. extremely “glad she’s on our side” energy.
also, with quark & odo basically the last two people on the station not affected by the virus, we get even more of them just blatantly being husbands, which is just about the only time i can stand odo. so, yeah. that’ll work. b-rank
1x06 “captive pursuit”
this wasn’t a terribly well-written episode, and o’brien is just about the least sensible character for them to decide is just… in charge of this alien just because he’s the first guy who encountered him? like, literally any other senior officer would’ve been better equipped for this, it seems like? like, don’t get me wrong, i did enjoy the clearly predator-inspired bullshit for, ah, totally not kink-related reasons. (don’t check.)
that doesn’t make this a good episode or anything, but like when the one hunter guy is berating the prey guy about how he’s gonna be put on display for people to insult & punish for allowing himself to be captured alive yeah i was hella into it, so i can’t say i didn’t get anything out of this pretty lackluster episode. c-rank
1x07 “q-less”
why the fuck was this a ds9 episode? like, i guess they needed to give ds9 one (1) and only one (1) q episode, but of all the ways to involve q in the show you’re gonna have vash’s return happen on ds9? really? what a just truly bizarre choice.
also like, in terms of q’s only ds9 appearance, following vash around making threatening comments and then getting punched in the face by commander sisko wasn’t exactly a great use of your one john de lancie appearance. c-rank
1x08 “dax”
i love a good courtroom episode, and dax is probably my favorite ds9 character, but it’s hard to say that the combination here makes an entirely satisfying whole? also like, i’m beyond infuriated that the only way dax was rescued from being kidnapped early in the episode is that bashir was being a fucking creeper? like, we’re basically being narratively told that his behavior was actually okay? so that fucking sucks.
the trial itself is actually pretty interesting, and i fucking love the old lady judge who is just doesn’t want to be there & consequently has no patience for anything. and i loved sisko fighting tooth & nail using every loophole of the legal system to keep dax from being extradited. this is a great sisko episode, honestly. the problem is that it’s not a great dax episode, and for it to work it would kind of have to be. c-rank

Old Trek vs. New Trek
Many discussions revolve around the topic how “New Trek“ like Picard, Discovery and other shows destroy Gene Roddenberry’s vision of Star Trek. According to the group of fans who only see the “old Trek“ as real Trek, new shows are too “woke“ or not interesting enough with long story arcs instead of new stories in each episode like in TNG. Strangely enough these groups who claim that for example “Discovery” is too boring on the other hand complain about Discovery’s crew constantly being engaged in battles. In their opinion the main aim of Starfleet was to research space. But the research on board of the Discovery, mainly their alternative propulsion system (the “Spore Drive“) , is dismissed and regarded as illogical. But how different is new Trek really?
1) New Trek is too “woke“
In Star Trek “Discovery” we have an openly gay couple. Yes it is the first openly gay couple on Star Trek. Their relationship is interwoven into the story without being pushy. There are the occasional “personal“ scenes but these are very decent, mostly just showing deep conversations between the couple or the occasional kiss.
On the other hand we had Jadzia Dax in “Deep Space Nine”. Although the situation with Jadzia was a bit different, we had an entire episode focusing on Jadzia’s feelings for her symbionts‘ former host’s wife. We saw them kissing and admitting their feelings for each other. Also we had a lot of scenes in “Deep Space Nine” that implied certain sexual activities between characters for example Worf and Jadzia or Quark and Grilka being in sickbay after spending the night together. Or Quark getting his ears massaged which is a kind of sexual stimulation.
Another topic which seems to be a problem for some people is the non-binary character Adira Tal. Adira is a human with a Trill-symbiont, who does not feel comfortable with being seen and referred to as a certain gender. In this case I must refer to Jadzia again. Jadzia is also a trill. She shares memories and experiences with her symbiont’s former hosts. While she sees herself as a female she doesn’t sees herself as a single being. She is the product of all those personalities, experiences and memories. She once has been mother and father, as she says herself . Therefore she acknowledges that there is also a male part in her. And in “The Next Generation“ Data let Lal, his “daughter“, chose her gender instead of making the decision for her.
2) “New Trek“ with its story arcs is boring
Fans of the old shows continue to claim that the new shows are boring. As one of the reasons they mention the long story arcs the newer shows use. In their opinion it is more interesting to have each episode a new story and also new planets and species. That is Trek supposed to be in their eyes. But “Discovery” and “Picard” aren’t the only and definitely not the first shows to use long story arcs. Here I have to mention again the great show ”Deep Space Nine“. Not only do we have a multi-season storyline. No, the show finale consists of a number of episodes, each of them ending with a cliffhanger and obviously building one large finale.
3) The crew of Discovery is engaged in too many battles while the other series concentrate more on exploring new worlds and making contact with unknown species
The Discovery is originally a science vessel. They work on an alternative propulsion system, the “spore drive“. But certain events pull the ship and its crew into fights like for example the war with the Klingons or the battles with Control or the Emerald Chain. This is not unfamiliar to those watching other series in the Franchise. The crew of the Enterprise is numerous times involved in such situations. Some times their ship is under attack other times they find themselves in hostile situations on the planets they are currently exploring. And “Deep Space Nine“ has multiple seasons dealing with the war against the Dominion or other tight situations.
4)The different appearance of the Klingons
The Klingons in Star Trek “Discovery” look very different from the ones in the other series. That is a fact to admit. On the other hand the Klingons in “Deep Space Nine“ and “The Next Generation“ look also different from the ones in “The original series“. This difference is explained to be caused by genetic experiments and a viral pandemic. But while this explanation (and the different look) is canonically accepted, the change of appearance in “Discovery“ is not. Although it could also be the result of genetic research or simple genetic mutation and evolution. But unfortunately it isn’t explained so far.
5) Too much focus on emotions and mental health issues in “New Trek“
Yes the new shows put a lot of focus on the topic of mental health. It seems as if wider parts of society (and those responsible for these shows) finally understand the importance to end the stigma surrounding these issues. But emotions and mental health topics on star Trek are far from new. In “The Next Generation“ Enterprise has their own ships counselor. There are numerous episodes dealing with mental health topics or at least putting some emphasis on them, like “Hollow pursuits“, “Tin man“ and to some degree “The survivors“. Or the episodes “The child“ and “The offspring“ which are highly emotional, focussing on loss and grief. And in “Deep Space Nine“ we have Nog struggling with PTSD, the O’Briens overcoming a lot of mentally draining situations, Gul Dukat grieving for his daughter among other things.
6) A computer as a sentinent being is too far fetched
In “Discovery” the ship’s computer develops a consciousness and calls herself Zora. Zora is able to make her own decisions and to experience emotions. Eventually she is declared a sentinent lifeform. While some people scoff about the story development, claiming that a sentinent computer would be illogical, they clearly forget about Data in “The Next Generation”. Data is an Android, a constructed machine, which looks similar to a human. In the course of the show Data shows signs of emotions, although he isn’t even aware of it himself and expresses his regret about his lack of emotions and him not being human multiple times. In the episode “The Measure of a man” Data is also declared a sentinent lifeform. Which consequently counts for his later created daughter Lal, who is able to feel emotions more strongly due to some system failures, too.
I think this little comparison shows clearly, that lot of topics which lead now to complains have already been covered in the “old” shows. I am not telling you to like “New Trek“. I am only asking you to accept that it exist and to respect that other people like it. Everybody has an individual taste and their own opinions. How boring would the world be if we all liked the same things? And isn’t Star Trek about “infinite diversity in infinite combinations“? That should be true for the fandom, too.

Let's do Star Trek (all of them xD) for you as well for the Fandom ask!
(& hhhhh I had just written a long response to your ask and Apparently I Hit Post Limit JUST before I answered that ask adsfghjkl hasn't happened to me in ages but of course it has to happen when it causes tumblr to delete my reply! Might rewrite it tomorrow, if I don't remember to just know tumblr ate it xD)
The first character I first fell in love with: Deanna Troi my first love. Did I want you? Did I want to be you? Yes. (I joke only halfway; I got into social work because I wanted to do what she does.)
The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Will Riker. I was jealous of him! How dare he be the imzadi of my beloved?! And then I realized that oh, he's actually a really great guy. I still hold him up as an example of mostly nontoxic masculinity. Does he get everything right? Heck no, but then so do we all.
The character everyone else loves that I don’t: Data - he's just not clicking with me, and as Star Trek as a franchise progresses, I am OVER seeing Brent Spiner everywhere.
The character I love that everyone else hates: I dunno if there is one - I've seen some people hate on Deanna, but have I really, or is their opinion not worth devoting a single brain cell on?
The character I used to love but don’t any longer: dunno, actually. If there is one, I mean.
The character I would totally smooch: too many to count. I'm like Jadzia that way. Just not Riker with a beard; or anyone with a beard really. Because Deanna is right, "yuck!"
The character I’d want to be like: as said up top, Deanna Troi!
The character I’d slap: Quark, all the time. Ugh. And Neelix.
A pairing that I love: Troi/Riker (plus any additional third, fourth, fifth person they include in their loving polycule!) Deanna/Beverly, Kathryn/Beverly, Kiradax, Kahn/Dax, ...
A pairing that I despise: Kes/Neelix. I get that he loves her, but boy.
Thanks for asking, Lilo! This turned out to be a lot of TNG, which only makes sense because that is the Trek I grew up with, and thus closest to my heart. I love VOY and DS9, and I adore what SNW is doing right now and I'm absolutely along for that ride - but TNG was my first. Dare I say my.... Imzadi? 😅

DS9 Companion liveblogging (4/14)
Second half of season 2 (2x14-2x26):
Interesting notes here on 2x14 “Whispers,” how it has an extremely tight focus on O’Brien (has no scenes without him) because having a B plot or any scenes where people are talking when he’s not in the room would immediately give away the episode’s mystery. Also, apparently a scene was cut because they accidentally used the wrong runabout name in the dialogue.
On how 2x16 “Shadowplay” was always about not being able to tell the difference between reality and virtual reality but started off much darker before becoming a heart-warming episode:
Tumblr media
(O’Brien must suffer.)
Interesting thoughts from Rene Auberjonois on the conundrum of why Odo can’t do faces:
Tumblr media
Another Word of God thing that some of Dax’s more wild behavior is an act intended to throw people off-balance. Honestly, though, I think she slept with that alien. Like, yeah, they were “working out” all right!
Tumblr media
Shimerman once again being a Ferengi booster (I love him so much):
Tumblr media
Fun notes on getting the TOS Klingon actors together for 2x19 “Blood Oath” and trying to decide what makeup/look to use. I appreciate the three of them more now that I’ve watched TOS.
An interesting dialogue for a scene in 2x20 “The Maquis Part I” meant to guide the actor’s reactions but not meant to be spoken, which I like because (1) it’s another example of admirals being The Worst (a great Star Trek tradition), and (2) it features Sisko defending his choice of Odo as head of security on DS9, which Sisko makes reference to later (that Starfleet is not happy and he’s advocated for Odo behind the scenes) but it’s nice to see it featured in written dialogue.
On 2x22 "The Wire": "'The fans said they were disappointed because they did not learn anything about Garak,' says Behr. [...] Although fans would learn a bit more about Garak in subsequent seasons, they never would learn the complete truth. [...] [Says Wolfe,] "He wasn't a gul; he wasn't in the military. He was in the Obsidian Order, and his first name is Elim. Those things, I would say, are the truth.'"
(It makes me realize that Garak is a one-man Rashomon story. XD)
The original pitch had Kira be the unexpected drug addict rather than Garak but it was rejected for being too heavy. Interesting!
Things revealed in this episode: Julian Bashir's middle name (Subatoi); Cardassia Prime is the Cardassian homeworld; the Obsidian Order and Tain as its retired head.
Interesting notes here on 2x23 "Crossover": the Mirror Odo explosion was a physical effect (exploding wax doll) not CG, and Worf was planned for a crossover appearance here, even before he joined the show, but he was unavailable and his lines mainly went to Mirror Garak. I thought it was kind of odd they specifically mentioned/established a Cardassian/Klingon alliance in this episode, but then no major Klingon characters appear...
Some interesting notes on how 2x25 "Tribunal" is the first episode set on Cardassia and features more O'Brien Must Suffer that builds on (1) a conversation between Sisko and Dukat about Cardassian justice in 2x21 "The Maquis Part II" and (2) Picard's experience with Cardassian interrogation in TNG 6x11 "Chain of Command Part II". I'm not a fan of this episode but the visual style and set are pretty memorable.
2x26 "The Jem'Hadar": Notes on the role of Vorta and Jem'Hadar within the Dominion, and the implication that Tosk was a Dominion creation:
Tumblr media
On why Eris is the only telekinetic Vorta seen in DS9: "Eris's apparent telekinetic powers would never be employed by another Vorta. Considering that the typically obsequious species weren't really known for their truthful nature, it's likely that Eris had faked those powers here. In any event, as the writers put more thought into the function of the Vorta, telekinesis was set aside as a misstep that Behr and the others hoped viewers would forget."
This is one of my favorite episodes because Sisko and Quark are just a great pairing as reluctant in-laws camping buddies.

More DS9
His Way: This was a corny episode, but in the seriousness of the dominion war, we need a few corny episodes.
However, I am very confused on how Star Trek views the morality of romancing a hologram of a real person.
Remember when Geordi made a hologram of Leah Brahms to discuss engineering with, and became attracted to that hologram, and then later on the real Leah Brahms found out and was understandably upset?  (although she later forgave him)
Remember when Barclay had a sexy hologram of Deanna Troi that he could romance and flirt with and Deanna was understandably creeped out? (she also forgave him, because Deanna has the patience of a god-damn saint)
Remember when Quark was trying to make a sexy hologram of Kira, and she was understandably very angry?
So why is okay for Vic Fontaine to make a sexy nightclub singer hologram that resembles Kira for Odo to flirt with?  Somehow this is seen as a positive thing in this episode.
I’m not trying to bash on Odo here, or excuse the prior examples I listed, I just think it’s weird, and writers need to come to a consensus on this whole thing.
Also, I admit I don’t really like Vic Fontaine.  Maybe he’s more likable later, but he’s this random character that comes sweeping in to solve Odo’s love problems, and everyone automatically likes him and loves his music, and no one is freaked out by how much power and self-awareness he has as a hologram.  He literally pops into other people’s holoprograms and gets on a comm-link to talk to Odo.  I think they had to minimize O’Brien in this episode, because O’Brien, who was on the Enterprise when it was taken over by self-aware hologram Moriarty, should be freaking the fuck out over this.
But mostly, I just don’t like the whole Rat Pack, Frank Sinatra thing.  It’s not my thing.  Every time he starts up with “Hey, listen, pally,” I can’t wait for him to shut up.  But that’s not his fault, he’s a perfectly nice dude, and he seems to be a very benign hologram.  I know he has a really good episode with a PTSD-suffering Nog later, so I’ll look forward to that.
Kira and Odo - I dunno.  I don’t fully ship it, but Odo’s much better than any of Kira’s other boyfriends.  And I did actually like them having a snappy little back and forth to lead into a kiss.  If they won’t let Kira get with Dax, she might as well have this.
Reckoning:  Hey, look, the writers remembered that Jake exists!  How’s it going, Jake-o?  Oh, you’re possessed by a Pagh Wraith.  Bummer, man.  Don’t worry, I’m sure your Dad will intervene to save.....oh, Sisko’s gonna just let this play out, huh?  Um...not really a good idea, Dad Sisko, but at least Jake’s okay in the end.
Kira is possessed by a Prophet and shoots lightning out of her hands, and I think that is very valid and sexy of her.
Kai Winn is just....such a fantastic character, and Louise Fletcher did a wonderful job with her.  She is so, SO good at saying the most benign-sounding things while actually verbally cutting the shit out of someone.  Every sentence out of her mouth is a knife wrapped in a little bow.  She is a hateful character, and yet she’s genuinely complex.  Sometimes she isn’t just an asshole, sometimes her position is reasonable as a major religious leader in Bajor.  I know she’s ambitious and ruthless, but I do believe that she wants what’s best for Bajor, at least until the end of the series.  Also, she IS the highest Bajoran spiritual leader, and she has to put up with people like Kira constantly sassing her, right to her face?  At some point I would snap and be like, “Okay, listen here you little shit,” except Kai Winn says things like “I will pray for the Prophets to grant you understanding, my child.”

Mobile Masterlist
I figured it might be easier for my readers to find my previous imagines if I make a mobile masterlist that I update at the same time as I update my desktop one. So here it is! I’ll add to it when I post new imagines, so it should always be up to date. Some imagines are listed in multiple series if the character is found in both - like Q or Pike, for example.
If you enjoy my work, please consider supporting me on Ko-Fi (it’s as low as $1CAD and it’ll go towards my education funds) or check out my commissions! Please check my bio and title to see if requests are open before requesting.

Ferengi Love Songs
Dax, you're as cute as a tribble
Rom!
They're getting married 🎉🎉🎉🎉
MOOGIE!!!!!
Bitch, you're supposed to call before you show up to stay with someone. Speaking as someone who's mother just fucking shows up whenever she wants and stays for days, it's INSANELY disruptive and stressful. Don't do that to people
I wish Rom had kept the earring
Your Ferengi engineer looks gnc af
Ma'am, you were fucking in your son's room?
Your mom's a milf, Quark, get over it
Zek arranged to meet Ishka but was surprised to learn she was a woman? #CanonBisexualZek
Lobekins... y'all know that post where the guy thinks gay people have special pet names and the example he comes up with is "hotcock"?
Sir, and wearing an earring and giving up your rights are not equivalent
I was gonna make fun of Rom for thinking he earns enough profit to be worth a gold digger's time, but considering Prinadora, I guess he did at one point
"What you did was wrong" ma'am, he didn't kill himself
Oh wait,
Quark, your mom looks gnf af
Of course Quark equates feminism with attempted world domination
God, I wish we got to see more of Leeta and Nerys' friendship
Me when Amanda slaps Spock: Why the fuck do people think she's a good mother?
Me when Ishka slaps Quark: *snorts*
Since when does Leeta sell jumja sticks?
Don't like Brunt saying "daddy"
Oh, poor Maihar'du going through Ferengi doors
I like these Ferengi action figures
Not even gonna comment on the back in the closet where you belong
You know the late seasons depression is hitting when a Ferengi episode is the highlight of the week. 9/10

Note
who do you like to write about/psychoanalyze most in the ds9 cast? is there a ranking or are they all equally interesting and it really depends on your mood? I assume it would be Julian or Garak but after that?
I actually think Garak, Julian, Dax, and Quark are the most interesting to think about (good), Kira, Odo, and Dukat (neutral), and Sisko (negative). Honestly I really do not like how Sisko is written, and wish he had been written differently. I think a lot about how he's written is NOT to his credit. When peeling characters apart, there are some I think are generally viewed in too rosy a light and others who I think are hit a bit overly-critically. For example, I do think Quark’s a legitimate religious adherent and it’s wrong to discount that when considering how he thinks.
