The points do not matter, but I did this anyways.

OLD AND NEW FAVORITES AT SMALL’S LIVE
MIKI YAMANAKA with Anthony Orji, Pablo Menares, and Jimmy Macbride, SMALL’S JAZZ CLUB, 9 SEPTEMBER 2024, 10:30 pm
FERENC NEMETH with Dayna Stephens and Sam Yahel, MEZZROW’S, 11 SEPTEMBER 2024, 10:30 pm
JOE FARNSWORTH with Georgia Heers, Sarah Hanahan, Eric Lewis, and Luques Curtis, SMALL’S JAZZ CLUB, 9 SEPTEMBER 2024, 9 pm
I appear to have elevated MIKI YAMANAKA to regular status and I check in on JOE FARNSWORTH for his regular collaboration with Sarah Hanahan. FERENC NEMETH had an unusual bass-less set with Sam Yahel whom I’m trying to get a handle on and Dayna Stephens who has impressed me in the past. It’s not quite a random sampling though.
While Hanahan typically roars—and she did that on the opening extended jam around Softly As In A Morning Sunrise—she toned it down on the songs with vocalist Georgia Heers, Never Will I Wed and a very nice Autumn in Net York before notching it up for the closing blues. But Anthony Orji had a nice dry midrange tone that danced in John Ellis/Scott Robinson land that had an interesting effect on MIKI YAMANAKA who can swagger but also listens sensitively and responded to the music in the moment. That versatility is part of what recommends her. Dayna Stephens sounded very Shorter-ish with terse lines on ESP and Footprints of course especially, but also Naima. All were arranged by FERENC NEMETH who also brought in the Beatles’ I’ll Follow the Sun which is a typically rich melody. Sam Yahel was himself and didn’t succumb to Tynerisms on the Naima. He also made us forget there wasn’t a bass without playing a heavy left hand. Their opener was a duo and that seemed perfectly conversational. I have to imagine Roberta Piket and Billy Mintz at home or Yamanaka and Jimmy Macbride similarly develop rich ideas together.
Eric Lewis with JOE FARNSWORTH was the discovery of this run as he was powerful and tasty. I will pull the trigger on his next trio leader gig as I’ve seen them in the past and never opted in. The Farnsworth gigs are expansive and indulgent. If the leader takes up a lot of space, equally he shares it with his younger band. And he does have a knack for giving space to younger players. That’s part of why I keep an eye on him. Hanahan deserves the apprenticeship but I liked her more here in St Louis with Peter Martin as that gave her some more structure.
Some Small’s Live gigs are for more fixed ensembles, but usually it’s a reflection of the community coming together for one off conversations. In any case, they are all ways to get to know that community and, even from here, feel part of it.

SARAH POWER AND BEAU BRIDGES STAR IN ‘OUR ITALIAN CHRISTMAS MEMORIES,’ A NEW ORIGINAL PREMIERING NOVEMBER 12, ON HALLMARK MOVIES & MYSTERIES
Part of the Network’s Annual “Miracles of Christmas” Programming Event
STUDIO CITY, CA – November 2, 2022 – Sarah Power (“Good Witch,” “Wild Roses”) and Beau Bridges (“Homeland,” The Fabulous Baker Boys) star in “Our Italian Christmas Memories,” a new original premiering Saturday, November 12 (10 p.m. ET/PT), on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, as part of the network’s annual “Miracles of Christmas” programming event.
When their mother leaves town for her first vacation in years, the Colucci siblings — Anna (Power), RJ (Jesse Irving, “Arrow”) and Ella (Morgana Wyllie, “Sacred Lies”) — reunite over the holidays to care for their beloved but ailing grandfather, Vincent (Bridges). Anna is back in town for the first time in years and is shocked to witness firsthand how quickly Vincent’s early stages of dementia have progressed. In an effort to jog her grandfather’s memory and bring back a cherished Christmas tradition, Anna sets out to recreate her late grandmother’s legendary pasta sauce. As Anna struggles to replicate the sauce, she and Vincent’s doctor, Greg also (Markian Tarasiuk, “Surface”) begin to grow closer and romance sparks. When Anna finally allows her siblings to help her on her quest to perfect the sauce in time for Christmas, she learns that the secret ingredient for a memorable holiday is the trio ultimately uniting despite their differences and past wounds.
“Our Italian Christmas Memories” is from Neshama Entertainment in association with MarVista Entertainment. Suzanne Berger, Arnie Zipursky, Dayna Zipursky, Lauren MacKinlay, Megan Ellstrom, Larry Grimaldi, Hannah Pillemer and Fernando Szew are executive producers. Stephen Harmaty and Boris Ivanov are producers and Francesca Visconti serves as supervising producer. Catherine Cyran directed from a script by Joie Botkin and Pierluigi D. Cothran and Samantha Herman, based on a story by Michael Varrati.

Kenny Barron | Concentric Circles
Kenny Barron’s newest album (his first for Blue Note Records, surprisingly enough) is probably one of the best jazz albums I’ve heard this year.  In fact, it definitely is.  It’s got a very classic hard bop style that reminds me at times of Herbie Hancock’s early albums, and it’s got a great lineup of musicians - Barron’s current working rhythm section of bassist Kiyoshi Kitagawa and drummer Johnathan Blake, as well as trumpeter Mike Rodriguez and saxophonist Dayna Stephens.  I like modern jazz, too, but albums like this are such a joy because it’s great to see people who can still play in this classic style and keep it fresh and interesting.

Alan Kwan: Streaming Technology Is Changing The Way We Consume Music In Hong Kong. Bid Farewell To Cantopop And Say Hello To Indies
In the old days, when we loved a song, we saved pocket money and went to a music store to buy vinyl record, cassette tape and compact disc. Internet has affronted and changed human civilization. We could no longer gently ‘touch’ the songs. Now, online ‘streaming platforms’ such as Spotify offer a huge library of songs, albums and playlists online. ‘Streaming’ works by transmitting music information from a server to your mobile phone, computer or whatever device which becomes a record player. Some condemn that the music received from streaming is low sound quality. This is currently true but technology will improve. Listeners care about quantity and convenience more than quality. The ease of finding and enjoying a song online is the real attraction. It was said that at present, more than 70% of the revenue from recorded music business was produced by streaming.
The wide music variety offered by streaming has made listeners more individualistic. Music is under the huge influence of personalization which has done so much to destroy the notion of ‘mainstream or pop music’. It is now hard to produce world stars like Michael Jackson and Madonna any more as music lovers have a world of their own and will not just follow the popular taste.
Hong Kong young indie jazz artist Alan KWAN Ka Kit said, “As the pop music market shrank, record company, composer, lyricist and singer all became more desperate to keep the market. People underestimated themselves when they should make a breakthrough. At the end, someone or something always gave up. Pop music became monotonous and many songs were twins. The date at which a song was written has no significance whatever. Most songs are written for karaoke but karaoke is not meant for people who can sing professionally. At karaoke, people want to sing simplistically for 3 reasons: for fun, for expressing love or for falling out of love. Music is secondary to lyrics.”
Alan Kwan is a brilliant jazz guitarist and composer based in Hong Kong and New York City. He was born in Hong Kong and graduated from St. Louis School. He started playing guitar at the age of 14. In 2009, Alan moved to the United States to pursue his music education: first in the University of North Texas and then by completing the Master Degree of Music in Jazz Performance at Queen’s College, where he was able to tap into the New York professional jazz scene. He has performed and recorded with a number of well known jazz musicians such as Eugene Pao(包以正), Ted Lo(羅尚正), Billy Childs, Dayna Stephens, Takashi Sugawa(須川崇志) and Rich Huang(黃瑞豐). Alan is an international rising star in jazz. He laughed, “After a taste of stardom, everything else is struggle, loneliness and starvation in Hong Kong.”
I disagreed, “When mainstream or pop music has slowly been falling under the radar, the indie, alternative, hip-hop and neo-soul genres are becoming increasingly popular. Brother, here is the chance to make your music profile stand out!”
Indie means independent music: it is the music produced away from commercial record labels. It is a free, autonomous and ‘do-it-yourself’ approach to recording and publishing. As being independent, indie music, like indie rock and indie jazz, do not fall into the defined traditional musical style. Many artists choose not to go from an independent label to a ‘major label’ although it has power and resources to promote their products. Even if given the opportunity, they want to remain free.
Alan said, “I do not wish to classify what I did. I look at things from one angle: I love music and this is why I do it. Money and fame are surely great motivations. But, bad music made by me can make me depressed.”
I challenged Alan, “Jazz or indie both imply a small market. Apart from your online streaming supporters, whom can you rely on to survive?” Alan clenched his fist, “Answer is simple. We have to go abroad. Hong Kong artists must try to be adventurous. I looked and am looking hungrily for overseas opportunities. I performed in the United States, Japan, Taiwan and Macau. In future, a musician, if not a virtual being, will be a bird.”
I added, “Some record companies try to group and place indie artists in baskets and distribute their works as the pop trend. I am against this. Freedom and diversity will be the right and unprecedented directions for music in Hong Kong. I do not like K-pop(Korean pop music) which only trained up robotic singing and dancing idols.”
Alan agreed, “If Cantopop fades away, let it go.  We shall not mourn.  We should work hard together to open a new chapter for Hong Kong music. Let more young and independent talents rise although they may not be handsome or pretty for commercial purposes.”
The migration of Hong Kong music from a dead spirit to a newborn body is now needed and will be inevitable. Streaming does not kill our music. It only kills the old ways of doing music business. For those who are still using a cookie cutter to cut out biscuit dough in the old way, they will be doomed to fail.

Danny Grissett – Remembrance (Savant)
Tumblr media
Dedicated to his dearly departed brother Robert who passed away in 2015, Danny Grissett’s Remembrance is a project colored by grief and loss, but more centrally a celebration of sibling affection and esteem. Grissett’s been a first call sideman for a decade, gracing projects by peers like saxophonist Jimmy Greene and guitarist Lage Lund alongside longstanding posts in the studio bands of trumpet players Jeremy Pelt and Tom Harrell. He’s also found the repeated resources to record under his own name on the Criss Cross label with renowned peers in tow and the resulting accolades have boosted his visibility even further.
This date, Grissett’s sixth in the driver’s seat, balances originals with cherry-picked covers and enlists a band that offers additional attestation of his cachet on the New York scene. Saxophonist Dayna Stephens earned a reputation as a reed wünderkind early in his career by wielding tenor and soprano with a facility that belies his youthful years. Drummer Bill Stewart is the senior of the group with past posts in the bands of Maceo Parker, Pat Metheny, John Scofield and a passel of others. Bassist Vicente Archer rounds out the quartet with a ripe sound and canny sense of placement. Confidence placed converts to respect repaid and the quartet sounds like a working unit from the jump.
Classic bop fodder like Dizzy Gillespie’s “Woody ‘N You” and Thelonious Monk’s “Gallop’s Gallop” vie with Grissett originals and several other choice covers including Herbie Hancock’s “Just Enough.” The session has the feel of a congenial blowing session without being overly loose or glib. The underlying inspiration certainly helps in the latter regard and Stephens in particular brings a sense of warm pathos to the project in the service of the somber side of Grissett’s piano ponderings. Archer and Stewart sustain a propulsive and alternating current whether the context is the lurching vamp of “Digital Bigfoot” or dialled back reverie that forms out of “Lament for Bobby.”
Catharsis through creatively-conceived sound can be a chancy endeavor, especially when the catalyst is personal sorrow. Grissett succeeds in honoring the memory of his kin without letting the purpose usurp the project and steer it in directions maudlin or dour. Considering his track record that result isn’t unexpected, but it is an accomplishment that comes with the invitation of an involving and intimate hour well-occupied.

Good News: Stuart Redman & Frannie Goldsmith own a Pumpkin Farm! It’s a become group effort with all of their friends (family*, really). Everyone has a job!
Stu & Frannie: The owners. In charge of organization, overall business and the heart of the whole wonderful mess.
Judge Farris: Foliage. Gardening and bringing together the beautiful autumn sceneries! He organizes and harvests the pumpkins for the patch (with help!)! Tends to drainage, watering, planting and soil!
Tom Cullen: Decoration! Putting together attractions and eye-catching exhibits. Constantly adding new designs to the corn maze! Makes the whole Farm unique! His favorite thing to do is pose the skeletons!
Nick Andros: Getting scared!--But seriously though, Nick is the all-around helper. He usually works the apple cider stand with Ralph but can be found anywhere he is needed.
Ralph Bretner: The collection and transportation of supplies! Works often with Judge Farris on the foliage. Sometimes he brings Tom along for his rides!
Larry, Leo & Lucy: Complete chaos, honestly. This family is deeply in love with Halloween. Leo spends a lot of time following Tom around, happy just to watch him create wonderful and spooky decorations. Larry sometimes performs with a mechanical skeleton band...just for fun! Lucy enjoys playing with Leo in the freshly harvested corn pool...plus her and Larry love to play fight each other in there.
Glen Bateman: Relaxing. This man is always in a hammock somewhere on the farm, watching Kojak run through the foliage and occasionally playing with Stu. Glen gleefully paints some wonderfully bad art that Stu hangs around the indoor areas.
Dayna & Sue: These girlfriends are in charge of the pumpkin carving contest. Dayna is an absolute artist with her knife. She attempts to teach Susan a new design each year, not minding the closeness at all. Susan usually walks around to help and encourage the kids while Dayna makes the most haunting pumpkin!
