The Story

Dustan Colyer, a 5 time cancer survivor, diagnosed at age 6 with Stage 5 Wilms-Tumor Kidney Cancer. His doctors told him and his family that there was little to no chance he would survive the first time around. Now he is 19 years old and still fighting and winning.

During high school a classmate/ friend of Dustan's, Nate Smith, was given a school project during his interpersonal communication class.The project was: Change the World. Nate focused on changing just one person's world (Dustan's) and as a result did what no one else in the class could, change the world. Nate raised money through t shirt sales and donated all of the funds to Dustan but not for his bills. The sole purpose of the money was for Dustan to go out and do whatever he could think of and escape his hospital bed for a day.

Dustan credits this experience for giving him the hope and strength to keep fighting. Today Dustan, Nate and a couple of friends have dedicated their lives to meet as many kids fighting cancer and to bring this same type of experience to each of them. DC Strong was the dream of four boys to make a difference in the world of pediatric cancer. The guys meet the children, find out what they are interested in and passionate about so that they can put together a care package of gifts (including toys, games, movies, music, clothes, etc.)

Followed up by a dream day that is again catered to what the children are interested in. The dream days have ranged from bringing call of duty to life for a hardcore gamer, to allowing allowing a huge car fan ride around in a Lamborghini and other exotic cars. We are currently setting up a princess ball for a little girl who missed her father daughter dance and loves Disney Princesses. These are all tools DC strong utilizes to show the kids that life is worth fighting for and on top of all of it, the four of us stay in contact with the children on a consistent basis. The final part of DC strong is the mentor-ship and this goes for the length of the battle with cancer. We are here to show the kids that you should never give up, never lose hope and no one ever fights alone.
