It’s Just you and me
-----------------------------
Fandom: Fallout 4
Pairings: Sole Survivors Oc’s (Dennis x Destiny)
Rating: Adult 18+
Warnings: Smut
Summary: The sole survivors have a relaxing night after a stressful week
-----------------------------
I brushed out my hair, my robe wrapped around my body. My husband walked up and leaned on the bathroom doorway, his arms folded over one another and a fond smile on his lips.
“You’re so beautiful, you know that?” Dennis said softly to me, I looked up with a hint of a blush on my rosy cheeks.
“Thank you.” I replied sheepishly, even though we had been married five years and had a child together, he still made me feel the butterflies.
“Is there chance I can steal you away for an evening?” Dennis smirked confidently, I chuckled.
“Where are you taking me, stud?” I questioned with a childish smile,
“Your choice, we could go to the Tipsy Brahmin, The Diner, The Cat’s Paw, or we could take the sedan and go to Starlight.” Dennis gave me a few options. I thought for a while, thinking of which we haven’t been to in a while.
“The Cat’s Paw.” I finally replied, Dennis smiled.
“Deal.” He nodded, he kicked himself off the wall and went into the room, he had taken a shower that morning, so he didn’t need one at the moment. I finished brushing my hair, then I brushed my teeth, and put my makeup on.
Dennis got dressed in a nicer outfit, it’s a faded black suit with a white shirt and ribbon in the shape of makeshift bow. He fixed his hair blindly, he sat on the bed and boot his shoes on, black dress shoes.
“Baby, I’ll be in the living room!” Dennis called to me, once he was ready.
“Okay, I’ll be out in a minute!” I called from the bathroom. Dennis walked out of the bedroom and shut the door behind him. I finished styling my hair, it was an evening style. I fluffed it and walked out.
My bare feet smacked against the wood floor as I walked to my dresser. I opened it and dug through it, I looked at different dresses in the tall-body mirror. I wrinkled my nose at most of my choices.
Finally, I picked up the white dress, I looked at it and nodded. I set it on the bed and took my robe off. I picked up the dress again and slipped it over my head, putting my arm through the hole of the only sleeve.
I smooth out the wrinkles as I looked at myself in the mirror, I smiled at the way I looked. I twirled a bit and fixed any cricks in the dress. I sat on the bed and put the matching black and white heels on.
I stood tall and got used to the heels, I walked over to the mirror and looked at myself one more time. I was satisfied with my look, so I headed out of the bedroom. Dennis looked up, his eyes lit up, like he was seeing me for the first time.
“Wow, you’re stunning.” He said breathlessly, I bit my lip and tucked a strand of hair behind my ear as I walked up to him.
“You look sharp, yourself.” I complimented, he smiled and held out his hand, I took it, and he led me out of the house. We walked outside with our arms locked. It was night in Sanctuary City, it was still bustling, despite the late hours. Traders were still going about with their brahmins.
The streetlights lit our way, we used the sidewalk like we used to in the prewar era, we had it repaired, so there was no more cracks or holes in it.
-------------------------
We got to The Cat’s Paw, just a few moments later. We walked inside and noticed it was busy. The bartender was filling drinks and making food, most of the tables were full, a few people were on stage, a woman we knew as Olivia and a man named Otto. He played the piano while Olivia sang old world tunes.
Dennis and I sat at one of the empty tables. We looked around and noticed some of our mutual friends inside. Like Piper, Deacon, Hancock, and MacCready. They weren’t sitting together, but they were present.
The colorful lights set the mood. I sighed a long breath,
“You okay?” Dennis asked,
“Yeah, just nice to get out.” I replied with a smile, we haven’t gone out in a while and with everything that’s happened this week, it was nice to have a night off.
“I’m going to get a drink and some food, what do you want?” Dennis questioned as he stood up,
“A beer and a sting wing filet.” I replied quickly, Dennis nodded and kissed my hand before walking up to the counter. Hancock noticed him as well as Piper, they looked for me and headed towards me.
I tapped my fingers on the table as I watched Olivia singing. She was a decent singer; I was impressed with her.
“Hey sunshine.” Hancock said as he plopped down in Dennis’s seat, he took a swig of his beer.
“Hey, Han. You get any ladies tonight?” I teased with a smirk,
“Nah, Piper refused and your taken.” Hancock replied with a shrug, Piper rolled her eyes.
“Find Cait, she’d sleep with you.” She snorted, I chuckled.
“I mean unless your fella wants a little action with us, I can provide.” Hancock said in a flirty tone. I gave him my knowing look.
“Oh Hancock, you’ve discovered out dark secret!” I cried dramatically.
“Stop mocking me, a guy can try.” Hancock snorted, I laughed,
“He’d so much as toss you over the wall than share me.” I smirked,
“I bet you’d like to see that, huh?” Hancock grumbled.
“Anyway!” Piper interrupted,
“Blue, I was wondering if you’d be willing to sing tonight.” She said as she leaned on the table, she looked at me with batting eyes. I laughed,
“I’ll think about it.” I replied,
“I think everyone will agree that you can sing and would prefer to hear you.” Hancock commented as he took another swig of his beer.
“Please Blue? We love your singing.” Piper was practically begging me now,
“Oh, fine. I’m going to eat first.” I replied. Piper nodded, seeming satisfied with my answer, she dragged Hancock away, they back to their own tables.
------------------------
Dennis came back with our drinks and food, he sat down, handing my plate and beer over to me.
“Thank you.” I smiled as I picked up my fork and knife,
“You’re welcome honey.” Dennis replied.
We dug into our meals and drank our beers. There was a comfortable silence that fell between us, I moved my leg and started to rub Dennis’s calf with my foot, he looked up at me and smirked.
I gave him my knowing smile, my brown eyes darted around the room to see if anyone was looking, when no one was, I lifted up my dress slightly and showed my husband quite the view.
He choked on his drink, when he saw I wore nothing under. His blue eyes shot up to meet mine. I smirked at him and put my dress down, smoothing it out. Then I continued to eat, knowing what was going to come next.
------------------------------
We finished our meal and drinks, before heading into the bathroom. The jazz was loud enough to drown out any other sounds. We walked into a stall and shut the door behind us.
It was a tight fit, so Dennis sat on the toilet, I lifted my dress up over my hips and sat on his lap. He undid his pants and pulled out his cock for me, I licked my lips and sat down on him further. Feeling him slip inside my slick walls.
I sighed getting used to his immensity, when he was fully sheathed inside me, I started to rock my hips, he bit his lip as he growled. He grabbed my hips and helped me ride him.
When I thought I heard the door open, my head snapped to look, Dennis grabbed my jaw and made me look at him, his voice was drunk with lust and his eyes hazy,
“Don’t worry baby, it’s just you and me.” He said breathlessly as he kissed me desperately, I returned his eager kisses. I bounced on his cock and felt myself unwinding,
“God, your cock feels so good.” I hissed, resting my hands on his shoulders.
“So does your pussy, so tight.” My husband growled as he kissed me again, his lips were wet from our constant hot kisses. He thrusted up into me, I felt him hit my sweet spot, I pinched my eyes shut. Huffing desperate breathes.
“Don’t hold back sweetheart, let go for me.” Dennis said into my ear, I trembled as I felt the knot in my stomach coming loose, I let out long moans, my eyes closed as I rode my husband.
He squeezed my ass and thrusted harder, I cried out finally and felt the knot come undone at once, my thighs shook as I coated his cock with my orgasm.
“Good girl.” He said in a strained voice, he followed shortly afterward. He painted my contracting walls with his arousal. We rode out our orgasms slowly, enjoying the feeling of each other.
-------------------------
When we finally came down from our highs, we cleaned up and went back out, like nothing had happened, but both of us had a glow and knowing smiles. Olivia had just finished her song and took a break; I took that opportunity to walk up onto the stage.
I stood in front of the microphone and waiting for the stereo to start playing, once it started, I went with ‘Man Enough’ by Magnolia, Dennis smirked as he got another drink and enjoyed the show, knowing damn well, he was the man of the song tonight.

2000 Followers Celebration!!!
& Fallout Alphabet Poll End Results!
Hey all, so the secret is out! (Kinda) But all these past polls have been the prelude to my 2K Followers Celebration BONANZA. (That's not the official title, I just wanted to use the word BONANZA).
Anyway, a HUGE, MASSIVE thank you to every single one of you folks who are a part of this little community and who've supported me and my fanfiction writing journey for the past few years (which is crazy that it's been that long, omg.) But I love and appreciate you all SO MUCH and am absolutely baffled that I've made it to this. I thought 100 was crazy, then I thought 1K was crazy and then it just kept on going! Ahh, I'm just so so so glad that there's a thriving Fallout community out here of amazing writers, artists, and fans that are still so involved 😊
I don't know what I would do without this space, so thank you all for being a part of it <3
ANYWAY (x2) Here are the final results to all 22 polls that I posted, with more event details just below!
So I've posted the 1st place winners, 2nd place, and then a 3rd "runner up" position that will only be filled by non-companion npcs, just to give them a chance to shine, and me a chance to write for some folks I'm not as used to. For the purposes of the 2k event, I will only be using the 1st place winners for the 'prompts' (which I'll explain in another post), and then a few of the 2nd placers and (almost) all of the runner ups will be used in ANOTHER upcoming event that I'm going to start prepping for (because I'm an insane person).

VIII, X, XXIV, & XXVIII for Nora?👀
Under a cut for mentions of graphic violence, suicidal ideation, and also because there are parts of fic in here making this post monstrously long.
VIII. The Lionsmith What is the cruelest thing they’ve done that they do not regret?
Nora beats Kellogg to death with the butt of a rifle, and Nick has to pull her off him. After, she recognizes in the moment that she lost control, but absolutely does not care. She mentions a few times after that she thinks he deserved it and she'd do it again. This kick starts a particular struggle for her--finding the line between where violence is and isn't the right answer.
X. The Beachcomber Describe a grudge, intrusive desire, anxiety, or other similar negative emotion they nurture. Are they willing to give it up? If not, what could force them?
Have a bit from the fic, during Nora's visit to the Memory Den after killing Kellogg:
Somewhere far away, Amari said her name, but she could barely hear it over her own ragged breathing. Her throat burned. Her hands trembled. Tears stung her eyes and rolled down her cheeks. Grief cracked open her chest and pulled out every part of her that mattered, leaving her gutted, as dead and cold as her Dana the moments after Kellogg had pulled the trigger. The only thing left was for Kellogg to turn his gun on her, but he hadn’t gotten the memo, had just smiled at her through the glass and walked away.
And her body hadn’t gotten the memo, either. Somehow, she was breathing, shaking, crying, but shouldn’t have been, because she wasn’t even a person anymore. How could someone be stripped of so much and still alive? Her family was dead, so she wasn’t a daughter, or a granddaughter, or a sister, and the world had ended, so she wasn’t a lawyer, and her husband was murdered, so she wasn’t a wife, and her baby was taken, so she wasn’t a mother.
After all of that, of being scraped down to her core, what else was even left?
There was grief, but grief burned, and then festered into hatred, hot and vicious like a chemical fire. She hated Kellogg, for murdering her husband, and hated the Institute, for ordering him to take her baby, and most of all, worst of all, she hated herself, for letting it happen, for not stopping it.
She should have been the one carrying Shaun. It was that simple. Every decision before had been like a line of dominos, stacked up so perfectly that whether she or her husband lived or died depended on the flip of a coin: someone deciding today wasn’t the day they wanted to end the world as she knew it, turning away the Vault-Tec salesman just once more, how quickly they left for the park that morning, the particular night Shaun was conceived, even something as inane and out of her control as the genetics that left her susceptible to a dangerous condition during pregnancy that necessitated her c-section.
If she had carried Shaun that morning, then it would have been her on the wrong side of Kellogg’s revolver, and she would have failed to protect her family then, too, but at least then she’d have gotten what she deserved for it. Dana would have grieved, but he’d have found Shaun by now. He wouldn’t have needed her, and he wouldn’t have needed Preston, or Danse, or Piper, or Nick, or Deacon. He would have caught up to Kellogg faster, or found the Institute already, and made them all pay for what they did to his family, and then it would be over.
If she had done just one thing differently.
If she had just carried Shaun…
Guilt and self-hatred eat at her a lot. She is forced to consider letting this go, eventually, after Shaun tells her that because of a particular quirk--fetal microchimerism--the Institute was never going to have her killed. She was always a pawn in his game.
XXIV. The Flint What is their most destructive tendency?
As mentioned in this post, Nora lets certain things fester. If she thinks something will drive a wedge between herself and a friend, she'll let guilt consume her without bringing it up and therefore opening herself to the possibility that her friend will cut ties with her. This makes her jumpy, wary around her loved ones, and then she lets more things fester, etc. It's a vicious cycle.
XXVIII. The Mare-in-the-Tree Describe them at their most dangerous.
Nora is most dangerous with her back against the wall. If she can't find another solution to a problem, she picks violence. If she's anxious, she may jump to violence before properly assessing all her options.
One of the things she struggles with in my fic is shooting X4-18 in the back during the battle at Bunker Hill. Up until that point--and as much as she can after, especially after growing close with X6-88--she advocates that the Railroad do what work they can not killing coursers. Still, she winds up killing several of them because the choice was between their lives or the lives of Railroad agents.

Desdemona x fem!Sole Survivor
I did it. I-I betrayed my own son, blew him up, him and his whole Institute. The explosion took out all of the remaining parts of the CIT building. The building where he admitted I was nothing but an experiment. I should be happy, right? Everyone else is.  “Nora. That was so cool, we finally won, all because of you. You should be proud of yourself. You freed the Commonwealth, saved all those synths.” Tom excitedly chatters, the slight pink in his cheeks showing how much he drank already. Or maybe he’s just a lightweight.
Nora starts feeling sick, the weight of what she did finally beginning to set in. “Yeah, sure. Uh, I don’t feel well, I think I’m just gonna go to bed. Goodnight, Tinker.” The other agents happily talked and drank, celebrating their victory, not noticing the vault dweller sneaking off into the tunnel leading to Old North Church. “I swear, everytime I walk through this path, it gets more disgusting.” she mutters to herself, kicking a ghoul body to the side.
Her steps slowed more as she went up the staircase into the church, the majority of it was already destroyed, but some of the pews were still intact. I may not be religious, but it’s all I can think to do. She sat on the end of the nearest seat, leaning forward with her elbows on her knees and her forehead touching her clasped hands. “Lord, if you’re there, and I have my doubts,” I start, sniffling slightly as I realise I’m starting to cry. “I’m more than lost on how to move forward. Do I even deserve to? I murdered the last of my family without a second thought. He may have become a monster, but maybe I could have changed him. He was my son and I just abandoned him, what kind of mother am I?”
“The good kind.” A voice interrupts and her head jolts up. God?! Desdemona stepped out of the shadows of the basement doorway, cigarette burning in her right hand, leaning her hip against the wall next to her, casually. “The kind that understands what needs to be done and does it. You do deserve to move forward and be happy, if anything, you deserve it more than anyone else.”
The tears stream down faster now, as Nora tries to stop them, failing miserably. “I’m not so sure about that. I just wish I could have done something, anything, to change him. I hardly even tried.” I know, I know I shouldn’t be feeling sorry for myself and bringing down the mood of our victory today, but for the first time since I came out of that vault, I’ve slowed down enough for everything to catch up to me. She sits up, cleaning her face with the bottom of her shirt. “He was an accident, I never wanted kids, especially so young. It was a dumb, drunk mistake with another student. We were friends at the time, I guess, but Nate and I never loved each other.”
Des pushed herself off the wall and walked over to where Nora was sitting, kneeling as best she could in front of her. “This is gonna hurt like Hell when I get up. Look at me, Nora.” She tipped her girlfriend's chin up to make eye contact. “You are a good person, even if you don’t believe it. Ask anyone in HQ, at Sanctuary, The Castle, all of those settlements you helped. Deacon told me the extent of what you did, how many people you helped even after everything you lost. I never thought to help people, but you, you evacuated all of those people, most of whom probably didn’t deserve it. So if you’re a bad person, then what does that make everyone else in the Commonwealth?”
Nora slowly nods, she lips slightly upturned into a smile. “Thank you, Des. What would I do without you?” She leans forward to hug Desdemona.
“You wouldn’t have gotten that code to create the teleporter.” Des jokes, making Nora pull back to stick her tongue out at her.
“I think I would have, I just probably wouldn’t have been as scared as I was when I first found HQ. You were the only one that pulled a gun, while Glory had a bloody minigun, and somehow you were more intimidating.” She laughs before she even finishes her sentence, making the last few words almost indiscernible. Sniffling a little, she looks down at her hands, now sitting in her lap. “I have Preston looking after Shaun at the Castle, I was um, hoping you’d be a mum to him? No pressure, only if you want to-”
“Yes!” Des cuts her off, quickly, almost shouting her answer in her excitement. “I mean, yeah, I would like that.” Nora moves over on the chair and stands up, reaching her hand down to help Des off the floor.
A year ago I thought my life was all, watching my husband get shot and my son taken from me, and waking up in a strange new world. Who would have thought that I’d meet such an amazing woman and have a synth child? I wouldn’t trade it for anything though, the Railroad’s definitely crazy, but they’re my crazy family now.

Wow, seeing a Deacon pop up here tossed me head-first into a memory. I noticed him following us and I don't know if I genuinely caught him off guard or if he let me do it but I kinda uh, pounced on him? Look, I was a weird kid (I was like 15) and the wasteland made me so much weirder, I went from "everyone will judge me for occasionally hissing when I'm startled" (a thing I do in this life, too lol) to "no one bats an eyelash if I just casually adopt animalistic mannerisms to communicate better because fuck if I understand how other humans do body language" (I get it more now but some of it is still weird, human eye contact is like some crazy math and no one ever gave me the formula). I knocked his sunglasses off (accidentally, not on purpose). The game doesn't do justice to what his eyes were like.
Anyway, probably wasn't the Deacon who knew me but it's nice seeing one around. Bethesda really half-assed that story line in-game and having been a Sole Survivor (albeit one markedly different from canon, I was Nora's child from before she met Nate and Nate adopted me because my bio-dad ran off, Nora sadly died in childbirth when Shaun was born, Nate was a stellar dad and losing him, too, nearly broke me) who was close to both him and Danse (who also has an unfinished storyline) is rough sometimes. I can't actively engage in helping digital versions of them grow into themselves, so I have only the vague memories of helping my versions of them grow and heal, but at least I know some of you are out here getting to have another go in a less fucked up world. Hope you're doing alright, D.

Five Years (Deacon x Sole)
CHAPTER ONE: TOTAL ATOMIC ANNIHILATION!
Description: The second she crawled out of that vault, dead cockroach meat in her pocket and tongue still not completely thawed, she knew she didn’t have to lie anymore. No more candy-striped wallpaper coating the halls, no more perfect wife and mother. She was no one. She was everyone. She didn’t sugarcoat her feelings, she didn’t hold her tongue. And it wasn’t that he didn’t appreciate that honesty, it’s that he had to mix in his honesty with a little sweet prevarication, like rum and coke-- but she was straight vodka, and he was starting to feel a little dizzy. Set in a world in which David Bowie did exist at one time, because the author can’t imagine a world in which he didn’t.
Warnings: Swearing and some fighting as well, but aside from that, no real warnings. I’m shit at writing angst, so there’s none of that. Slow burn, all chapters already written, hopefully one chapter a week unless grad school totally swamps me. Also, there are several elements of this story that are little fix-its for me, because todd really made me try to care about a son and husband smh. I was running around the wasteland like “why does everybody keep talking about my son? The only son I know is named Dogmeat, and he is a Good Boy.” ALSO because todd won’t let me romance Deacon.
Note from the Author: Hi folks! I wrote this to help me get through my writing block and because I needed a lil comfort in these trying times, so I figured I would make this blog to share it. I’m in the process of also putting it on ao3, but this is the first fanfic I’ve ever written so I’m not sure how this all works. I hope y’all enjoy!!!! This story gets started a little slow because I wanted to give an introduction for how I interpret the sole survivor’s personality and such. Pls let me know if you like this, and if you want to read more!! Love you!! <3
When she woke up in the morning, she knew the exact percentage of how likely she was to die that day, down to the decimal. It was not like a superpower, per se, just a sixth sense. An awareness, she might call it. She was incredibly aware of herself.
She couldn’t sense this clearly in other people, though she did have a sense of it. A vague direction as to how closely they’ll come to seeing their entire life flash before their eyes. She had seen it once or twice in Nate’s eyes over the breakfast table— a tint of green in his brown eyes that wasn’t there the day before, almost like a warning.
Something’s going to happen. It might not be bad, or it might be terrible. But it’s something.
She watched him turn his nose up at the box of Sugar Bombs sat on the countertop, favoring instead a cup of coffee and half a tato. She waited patiently for him to start his bi-weekly diatribe against the Sugar Bombs Corporation and their devious aims against the children of the Commonwealth.
“Did you know there’s a Sugar Bombs factory in Beijing?” He’d mentioned, several months ago for the first time. She was honestly just excited to hear that he’d managed to establish a new argument, though she wasn’t convinced that the Sugar Bombs factory in Beijing was a direct link to Childhood Communism as much as it was just outright standard capitalism.
When he finally settled at the table with his half-tato in one hand, coffee in the other, and Boston Bugle folded neatly under his arm, she watched his eyes. He was looking a little green, and she wondered errantly if perhaps he’d be scraped by a car while crossing the street. She herself, however, was at a solid 15%, which was a little higher than her standard measurements, but nothing out of the ordinary or concerning. Perhaps she would break a finger, sprain her ankle, crack a tooth on a Nuka-Cola bottle.
She appreciated the extra air of danger.
Life in Sanctuary was beautifully but painfully dull, less dull now that there was a child in the house, but dull nonetheless. Now, the stale quiet that usually settled over the house in the afternoon was permeated by the frequent cries and laughs of the child and the exclamations of their brand new housekeeper, who thought the child was a marvel of modern science.
He was, at the very moment his parents were eating breakfast, sleeping in his crib in the back room, the powder blue of his walls shielding him like a personal sky as he went completely unaware of everyone around him. He had the enviable manner of a child, crying whenever he felt a slight discomfort, laughing at the simplest of things.
She wished sometimes she could burst into tears just because she was hungry, or weep at the thought of being sleepy. It had been so long since someone had properly addressed her humanity that she thought if someone held her against their chest, she’d fall asleep, just like the child did at night when she rocked him.
“Mum,” Codsworth chirped as he hovered into the kitchen with a wet rag in one hand and a rattle in the other.
“Morning, Codsworth,” she replied with a mouth full of cereal. She, unlike Nate, was not too good for Sugar Bombs, and if they were implanting Communist Tracking Chips into her brain, well, that was a risk she was going to have to take. As long as she was the one who had to do the grocery shopping, she was not going to deny herself the simple pleasure of marshmallow cereal.
“Young Shaun should be asleep for approximately the next two hours.”
“Thank you, Codsworth.”
Nora loved Codsworth. There were days when she thought of him more as a husband than Nate. Codsworth, in his thrumming metallic voice, asked her everyday how she was feeling. Nate sometimes quirked his brow at her, and she nodded in response, but their marital conversation was frustratingly dry.
Like Sugar Bombs without milk.
Chip Harris was grandstanding on the news, and his thick croon filled the background of the house with a pleasant sort of domestic white noise along with the gentle clink of her silverware and the crinkling of Nate’s paper. She tuned her ears for a moment to Chip’s voice as he read from a teleprompter about some new information about China’s secret nuclear plants.
Everyone has nukes nowadays, she thought bitterly. Her Sugar Bombs were now soggy. Why are we allowed to hide them, but China has to send us a report or else we accuse them of some kind of crime?
She absentmindedly wondered if having a crush on the newscaster might turn her into more of a nuclear housewife. She knew Natalie Hawthorne had a crush on Chip Harris. She watched him every morning, even had a signed picture of him that she kept in her nightstand. Mr. Hawthorne was fine with it, of course, because no one in Sanctuary Hills could even prove that Chip Harris was real. No one could prove that he wasn’t just an incredibly advanced Protectron— a Mr. Handy in a pinstripe suit. Mr. Hawthorne didn’t have to worry about Chip Harris stealing his wife.
A knock on the door broke Nora’s concentration.
“Must be that sales guy,” Nate intoned, obviously bored senseless by the notion of a salesman at the door. “He’s been asking for you all morning.”
“All morning? I didn’t even hear him knock before now.”
“Yeah, well, that’s what happens when you sleep until 9 AM.”
Thank you, Nora, for staying up until the Devil’s Ass-Crack of dawn comforting a weeping child. Thank you for feeding him while I put earplugs in and turned over to the cold side of the pillow so I could go back to sleep. I answered the door for you, and the salesman gave me a free ticket to Fuck-Off-Ville, and I’m taking the child with me. You and Codsworth have fun now!
A woman could dream.
The salesman at the door was a weasel-looking fellow with an awfully mustardy-colored coat and matching hat. His smile seemed like it might be genuine, but based on the wrinkles that beamed from the corners of his eyes, it seemed he was well-versed in faking a good smile.
“Good afternoon, Ma’am! I am glad you took the time to answer the door today, because what I am about to tell you is a matter of utmost importance,” he promised, his smile somehow extended as he emphasized utmost importance.
“Utmost importance, huh? Glad I answered the door, then.”
“As you should be. Because of your family’s service in the military, you are eligible for entrance into the local vault— Vault 111!”
She eyed him warily before glancing up towards the hill at the end of the cul-de-sac. She had remembered the day Vault-Tec had started construction into the hillside, promising the neighborhood that “We won’t work until 9 AM, we’ll be gone in a flash, and you and your family will soon be protected in the unlikely event of total atomic annihilation!”
She didn’t buy the working until 9 AM part, she was skeptical about them being gone in a flash, and she hadn’t taken the time to assess the thought of total atomic annihilation. That was something that happened to people in the movies, or on radio shows, not in Sanctuary Hills. Total atomic annihilation might actually spice up her life, if it deigned to come close to Sanctuary Hills.
“Thanks,” she mentioned passively, ignoring the clipboard that was slowly being edged towards her. “My family too?”
“Yes, of course! Except the robot, mind you. Would you mind taking a few moments to fill out some paperwork?”
Nora turned her head to eye the situation inside the house before accepting the clipboard. If the salesman had knocked before, there was no reason to send him away then. He was working hard, and she appreciated the thought if not the persistence.
“Excellent! Now you and your family are… Prepared for the Future!”
She gave a half-hearted laugh at the way he performed his reading of the motto— the Vault-Tec promise that had been broadcasted via billboard all over every cityscape and neighborhood nearby. If total atomic annihilation never came around, Vault-Tec was sure going to look foolish.
She shut the door and sauntered back over to the breakfast table, but just as she sat down, a cry rang through the house. Shaun was awake, and Nate was eyeing her above the folded edge of his paper.
“Mum!” Codsworth chirped once again, hovering back into the kitchen. “Young Shaun seems to be inconsolable. Would you mind using some of that… maternal instinct you seem to be so good at?”
“Sure, Codsworth. Thank you.”
Once the door was closed in Shaun’s little room, she felt a great weight lift from her shoulders. True, she had not liked the child at first, but he was growing on her, and she appreciated the fact that he had to listen to everything she said without commentary or judgement.
“You might be unsure now, but once that beautiful baby boy is handed to you in a pretty blue blanket, you’ll love him more than you’ve ever loved anything,” Natalie Hawthorne had told her at the baby shower in a moment of vulnerability. Nora had escaped the Hawthorne’s living room to cry in their bathroom, marking it up to hormones at first, but the second she looked in the mirror and saw that damned stomach of hers, the crying got worse. Natalie stumbled into the bathroom by accident, catching Nora in the midst of a coughing fit.
So, Nora waited until Shaun was born, and when the nurse handed him to her, she stared at him and felt absolutely nothing. But she cooed and tickled his tiny feet, promising to herself that if she could just get the child home, maybe it would get better. Maybe it was the anesthetic and the drugs that made her so emotionless. It wasn’t.
It was the fact that she hadn’t wanted a child at all, the fact that she hadn’t even really wanted a husband, but her parents had set her up with some soldier boy, fresh out of a set of power armor, and that was that. She would marry Nate because it was what she was supposed to do, not because she had fallen in love.
She adjusted Shaun’s cap before scooping him into her arms.
“What do you have to cry about?” She muttered to the child. “You don’t have to pay taxes. You’re not going to have to wear heels and go grocery shopping and attend baby showers. You’re going to play catch in the backyard with your father, and then one day, some girl will marry you because she has to. You’re set for life, little buddy.”
Shaun merely gargled something, his hands grabbing for her hair. He was like a partially-sentient diary. She would pile her troubles on him, and he would go, “Ah!” And then go back to sleep.
“I was thinking we could go to the park today,” Nate remarked as he stepped into the nursery. “Would you be interested?”
“Sure, sure. Might be nice to get some fresh air.” She had intended to say more, perhaps something about finishing her Halloween preparations, but when she turned to him, she saw his eyes fully for the first time that day, and Shaun nearly slipped from her grasp.
“Woah, woah, hey,” Nate took the child from her arms. “You alright?”
“Yeah, I just… are you feeling alright?”
“Fine. You look pale, though. Maybe it’s all that Chinese Cereal.”
She chuckled despite herself and maintained eye contact with as much focus as she could muster. His eyes were near fully green. She was sure it was nothing. It had to be nothing. They were going for a walk in the park, and besides, her percentage was still standing at a solid 15%. It was nothing.
But Chip Harris knew more than she did, and when Codsworth called them all into the living room, Chip Harris was, for the first time on the air, misty-eyed. His head was in his hands, the morning report discarded as he faced the camera with shaking eyes.
“Shit,” Nora whispered, and Nate scolded her for her foul mouth. “Sorry, I just… is this it?”
“I think this is it.”
“Whatever it is, I will certainly miss you all dearly. Sir, Mum, Young Shaun. I believe this is goodbye.”
Codsworth’s goodbye started her heart thrumming at an unbelievable pace, and she kicked into gear, sweeping herself up from the loveseat and rushing towards the door, ushering Nate and Shaun behind her.
This was it. This was the end of the world, but it wasn’t going to kill her.

"I would not have willingly allowed innocent people to die. I could and did help Preston and his companions. But, let's face it, he created me, not just the title. He continued telling me, even in my most obsessed moments, that other weaker individuals needed my assistance." "A lot, indeed," I say, laughing slightly.
She laughs as she presses her fist against my chest. Then she becomes serious once more.
"Consider this for a moment. I am armed with formidable weapons and armor. My X-01 is significantly more powerful and technologically advanced than the greatest armor of the Brotherhoods. I am aware of the location of at least 20 nuclear weapons. I've hidden rocket launchers around the Commonwealth, and most people feel fear in front of me. Preston, on the other hand, continually pinching my ear to remind me not to crush anyone in my path. He is constantly pressuring me to reach out. He used a chisel to carve it into my heart. Without him, the power would have gotten to my head, and I would have stopped helping everyone. I may be immersed in my drunken revenge. You had no choice but to turn your back on me in my darkest hour." "Nora…" "I don't blame you. I understand. And you came back. You found me. You rescued me. But who sent you?" "Preston…" "Do you see what I mean? We are the spearheads, the warriors who travel the world to bring justice to balance. We're going to do it. Danse, MacCready, Piper, Deacon, as well as you and me. We're going to do it. But he is the wind of hope, the blind trust that keeps us on track. He calls us to order when we turn away or are selfish. His own faith is what resurrected the Minutemen from the ashes. I'm only a figurehead, but he's the only true captain on board. I'm a representation that his own faith have created."
