It's also wild to me how "selectively mute" dean is extremely popular in fanon (and IS a canon trait as well) yet some people will still turn around and act like Dean being unable to speak / express himself at times (especially high stress / high emotional moments) mean he's "repressed." :ike, I am starting to wonder if people even know what the word repressed actually means.
repressed: (of a thought, feeling, or desire) kept suppressed and unconscious in one's mind.
Unconscious in one's mind. That means you are not even Aware of your own feelings. This does not describe Dean. Dean is incredibly emotionally intelligent and self-aware. Simply not outwardly expressing something or talking about it (usually when being pushed before he's ready to have those conversations) or simply choosing not to speak about certain feelings with someone is not being repressed. And certainly not being able to speak, period, because of a stress / trauma response like selective mutism is NOT being "repressed."
Dean going mute as a stress response does not mean he's unaware of what he's feeling. In fact he's extremely aware, often feeling too much all at once and unable to process or get his words out in the moment. But that doesn't mean he doesn't have things he Wants to say. That doesn't mean he's unaware of his feelings. It just means that he's literally unable to get words out at times, due to a stress / trauma response. But when he IS able to get the words out? When he does have those open and vulnerable conversations, when he feels comfortable? It's not difficult at all for him to express himself.

i was thinking the other day how we tend to draw cas and dean (correctly tbh) like
but in doing so we are betraying another fundamental dynamic of theirs which is more like,

Obsessed with the sudden shift in Cas' willingness to say insane romantic shit to dean in season 8. A couple of seasons ago, he would tell dean that they had a profound bond to his face. That everything he did, he did for Dean. Now? He's hesitating. He clenches his fists to avoid hugging Dean back in purgatory. He stutters and looks away before saying he stayed away from Dean to protect him. When asked what broke through heaven's brainwashing, he looks away and says he doesn't know. It's so interesting to me

sometimes i watch scenes where Cas is looking at Dean in a way that just screams "i am in love with you" and then i remember that at purcon7, Misha said that somewhere along the way he had just accepted that that part of Castiel's story was canon. way before he even knew that Cas would ultimately end up confessing. he was literally subconsciously playing Cas as being in love with Dean, for god knows how long??? that's why he always stared at Dean with actual heart eyes, like he hung the moon and stars. because Misha had already decided in his subconscious mind to play Castiel as absolutely whipped for Dean Winchester
i'm so sick

Not for nothing, but this scene makes me cry every single time I see it. That is Dean, widowed a-fucking-gain, finding someplace to put his bootless love. Like, why did they make me watch this? Why did they break my fucking heart like this?

last three seasons spn are crazy. its just dean being borderline suicidal while sam tries to fix it by basically dangling his keys at him and going : “dean look! cowboys!” “dean look! strip club!” “dean look! haunted action figure.”
Meanwhile castiel is like i see that dean is suicidal, this is clearly my fault so i will remedy this by dying.

🏳️🌈 day 5 ~ cursed or not
Dean was barely seventeen years old when he had to burn the remains of the nuns. He still remembers the heat of the fire on his dirty fingers, the grey smoke making his eyes all wet and swollen and sore (it wasn’t the smoke, it wasn't).
That’s what love must feel like, he though: blistering, painful, unkind.
Maybe they really were cursed. Maybe he is cursed too.

already seeing bad fanon like "lol yea dean wouldn't want to talk abt the confession bc ~too repressed to talk abt feeeelings~" like, no<3 dean literally Understood and Processed the confession and the meaning of cas's words, romantic connotation and all, while he sobbed on that dungeon floor. and any future lack of discussion abt it is because they literally have an understanding that goes beyond words. there's nothing to discuss or clarify re: cas's words. dean is also incredibly emotionally intelligent in canon, empathetic, and self-aware of his own emotions AND has no trouble being open and vulnerable with others when it's not like, sam pushing his boundaries and trying to corner him into talking abt things before he's ready. also the idea that cas would automatically come to the conclusion that dean doesn't love him / could never love him if they don't immediately Talk About The Confession ?? when cas's whole entire speech to dean was about how he SEES all the love in dean, how dean is truly a being of love and that cas learned so much about love FROM dean. like hello ???

Supernatural really came into it's own when they totally gave up on Deans whole "one night stand with random women" thing and just started writing Cas and Dean as a couple.

the thing about destiel that hits so hard for me is that cas is thee number one dean understander. no one in dean’s life has EVER gotten dean the way that cas does. no one has ever even tried to. dean takes care of everyone he loves. but cas…cas is the only one who takes care of dean back
