Deconstructing Doof is such a great Phineas and Ferb episode because it’s about one guy figuring out how the show works and then losing his mind over it.

i cant decide whether Deconstructing Doof or The Candace Suit are my favorite episodes of Season 5A (already somehow the BEST season of the show its a reboot of, lmao they cooked) Deconstructing Doof i love for being a phenomenal step in the lore/saga of the Phineas and Ferb Effect as a phenomenon (which i love piecing together the lore of, watching the original series its insane how well it fits as a retcon and also makes the boys SO much scarier. They ruined this therapist man's life by accident) The Candace Suit is just a fountain of good screenshots and jokes. I legit had a panic attack staring at the room of the. Baljeet Molds. I was originally worried that we'd ruin the majesty of one of my favorite unexplained bits that Buford has life-sized molds of everybody but no. They play it SO well. This story needed to be told. Not many phineas and ferb episodes play with the beautiful painting of Grotesque and this one does it so well.
anyways season 5 peak phineas

Okay so I’ve gotten around to watching the New Phineas and Ferb Episodes and have thoughts on the Subject of Deconstructing Doof Episode.
The season seems to take place early summer, and they say they started therapy 4 weeks ago, which indicates to me that his guy is great detective and terrible therapist and because I get the feeling that Doof went to therapy to try and get better at being good for when he needs to be Professor Time (I like to think it was on the recommendation of the Murphys) and this guy did such a bad job that Doof decided to do evil again (if you can call most all of what he does in the season evil lol). Which o find to be just a very funny thought.

obsessed with the implication that the mysterious force that keeps Linda from seeing all of the shenanigans for some reason also works on every psychologist in danville. like the rest of the citizens of danville all treat everything completely normally except for every single psychologist (except one)??? need to ask the mysterious force what gives these psychologists mom status

Deconstructing Doof was one of the best episodes this season!! Could it be that the Therapist could be a new foil for Perry and OWCA? That would be super interesting if so, and would mean that Hienz being evil again could be temporary!

Phineas and Ferb Season 5 Reviews: Dry Another Day/Deconstructing Doof
The sister segment is, alongside The Candace Suit and Agent T for Teen, probably one of 3 episodes considered the most iconic so far of Season 5, worthy of consideration among other iconic episodes. I'm not saying there aren't any honorable mentions (License to Bust, The premiere duo of episodes, More Than an Intern has its fans, The Haberdasher scratches it), but yeah, it's those 3 that have spawned the most discussion, the most memes, the most love. As a certified Candace enjoyer, I do wish the episodes that really gave focus to her positive sides this season (like the aforementioned Cloudy with a Chance of Mom and License to Bust, and the unfortunately poor Meap Me in St. Louis) got that love, but that's just how it is with iconic episodes, they don't really choose themselves, they just kind of get chosen.
But let's focus on the first segment before we get to the one everyone's raving about (and for good reason): Dry Another Day.
Let's get one thing out of the way: this is one of the episodes were the Hamster and Gretel esque close up animation is REALLY blatant. It looks like one of the webshorts they release, and I don't say that in a nice way.
The episode is simple, S1 simple: the gang are really hot, so they decide to make an endless Luge track (the word association to reach it is classic PNF), while Doof tries to dry up all the water in the water park and replace it with Doonkleberry oil because backstory.
Honestly, as much as I do love the simplicity of S1, this episode is TOO simple. It feels a little like going through the motions, as I feared S5 would. I'm pretty sure most fans liked it, but I doubt it's ranking high, and it definitely isn't ranking high for me. I don't even have much to say about it, as everyone and everything is so one note, and not even in a fun stereotypical way. I like some of the gags (like "I see you're in a song sequence", return of the talking Zebra, who Candace seems to be on far better terms with, and the glass of lemonade as Perry's entrance, very creative), but outside of that, I'm left a little... Underwhelmed. (Ha, you thought I was gonna say cold, didn't you, Perry the Platypus? Well, I suppose I did say cold just now, but that wasn't part of the original sentence, so there, Perry the Platypus, egg on your face. Which doesn't make sense, because eggs are good, and rarely on people's faces. The phrase should be Lobster on your face, now THAT'S a pickle. Or, well, Lobster, same difference).
Point is, the episode is just a tad too basic, and outside of a classic Candace appearance, and some decent gags, it doesn't really strike me as that memorable.
Deconstructing Doof on the other hand...
As a big fan of both Candace and Doof (but especially Candace), and one who finds the psychological profiles of both fascinating, this episode is a god damn treat. To see the show acknowledge how painful it must be, especially for the former, is long overdue. The entire episode feels like one big meta commentary on the entire show's formula plot and how horrible it must feel for Candace and Doof, even though we've seen it a million times. The therapist (surely going down as one of the greatest one shot characters in the show) is simultaneously funny, skeevy and understandable: His frustration as it all being there yet no one sees is relatable as all hell.
As are a lot of the meta gags, from references to concept art, to previous inventions and plots, to the damn he does nothing or does he madness scribble (I'm also very fond of the candace doll he creates, weirdly cute).
The song is also a banger, not just for great lyrics and music, but for the heart wrenching visual of Candace crying. S5 feels like it really cares for her and wants to show her as multifaceted as possible, as we've already seen both the best and worst of her.
The disco ball invention is also lowkey one of the best in ages and the song is a genuine bop.
I'm not sure what else I can say others haven't, this episode is funny but also dramatic and oddly tragic. Seeing Linda care for Candace's well being and embrace her, but that last tease of how Candace is still struggling... Yeah, it's a joke ending, but if we take the entire show's canon to heart, we know that Candace will take a while more to recover and mellow out, and it hurts to see her hurt. It's what makers her such a fascinating character to me, a Sisyphean figure who discovers who she is through her failings, turning from attempted busting older sister to a super star lawyer and a loving mom.
Doof was also on top form in that second segment, I must add, with the script sequence perhaps the funniest he's been in ages too.
Seriously, I don't know what else to say, Deconstructing Doof isn't just a great S5 episode, or a great PNF episode, it's arguably one of the best in the show's history. I'm not saying it's a top 20 contender, but surely a top 50 contender, and easily the most iconic episode so far (alongside the terrifying Candace Suit and the fanservicey Agent T for Teen). I just hope we can have an Agent T for Teen esque hero episode for Candace, as that would make this season a 10/10 for me.
Pros for both episodes:
The second episodes songs were great, "No One Understands Me" is one of the best in a while
Both (but especially the second) really funny
Character analysis through the roof
Candace is on top form
Perry's been great too
A one shot character for the ages
Cons for both:
Animation is looking really poor in these
The first episode is a little too basic and S1 for my tastes
The gang are feeling a little too "one mind" ish. Need more individuality.
Next review tomorrow!

going to actively say that some of these episodes are fully (in a coded manner) deconstructing different neurodivergent experiences in various characters. we have two episodes about baljeet’s inability to see things from a non literal perspective, one about isabella having a literal meltdown because her routine was changed, and one that (going to sound like that damn therapist, but) literally deconstructs how buford mimics other individuals in order to match what he believes is expected behavior….. (that’s partially queer allegory I know because I mean …. he stated he wants to be perceived as female…. through the mimicking of candace… but that is also a common autistic experience as well)…..
and then obviously deconstructing doof being whatever the fuck and a half by confirming that candace fears she experiences psychosis….. (yeah that actually made me cry lowkey)….
oh and lawrence showing literal adhd behaviors….. will any of this ever be confirmed verbally? probably not, but it’s nice to see it represented in a deeper way.

PnF Revival: Perry After Deconstructing Doof
This is one of the most interesting episodes of the revival because absolutely nobody gets a win. Candace and Heinz don't get the help they need, Dr. Shamai has a mental breakdown and gets arrested (frankly he deserved to lose his license even before his big public presentation because this dude managed to break every HIPPA law in existence), and Perry definitely saw the messy aftermath on both sides of his lives. But hey, OWCA's existence is safe, yay?
Perry doesn't want to be relocated, so he follows OWCA's orders and destroys the evidence, ruining Dr. Shamai's career in the process. Dr. Shamai is thoroughly discredited to the public, just as OWCA wanted.
Perry goes home, relieved that he won't be exposed after all...and that only lasts until he sees Candace crying in her room. She may claim that she's dealt with her mom never believing her so many times that she's not affected anymore, so she must be stronger than her therapist who mentally broke after a single attempt to expose the boys.
But she isn't. And now it hits Perry that he once again hurt two people he cares about because of OWCA's need for secrecy and threat of relocation if secrecy isn't upheld.
There isn't much Perry can do for Candace, but he tries to be there anyway for her. Candace doesn't kick him off the bed. She just holds him, talks to him, and even smiles a bit when she pets him on his involunary reflex spot. She falls asleep holding him, and Perry wishes that he could tell her the truth. He feels guilty, being thanked for making her feel better when he feels some responsibility for her state.
And the next day, Heinz doesn't have an evil plan lined up. Dr. Shamai's arrest is the biggest news story of the summer so far, and some digging from an investigative journalist reveals that he's had numerous privacy violations under him, and he's most likely going to lose his license.
Heinz and Perry sit at the table, eating lunch and trying to make sense of it all. Heinz isn't sure if he should give up on therapy, or try to jump into finding another one straight away. Perry steers Heinz into at least considering another therapist, and Heinz thanks him for it, then asks Perry if something is up cause he seems off right now.
Perry just shrugs, and Heinz asks if he happened to be seeing Dr. Shamai too. Perry gives him an odd look, and Heinz quickly backtracks and tells him he doesn't have to answer that.
Perry just sighs into his tea, not really up for any activity today.
"Look at it this way. If I had a nickel for every time a therapist tried to exploit my emotional problems on live television without caring about my actual well-being, I'd have two nickels. Can't buy anything in this economy with just two nickels, but it's something, right?"
Perry shrugs, and Heinz teases him a little when Perry tries to hide a smile behind his teacup.
Candace and Heinz will recover with time. But Perry has to push away the desire to tell them the truth, or it would cost him everything.
