Making your own Home Assistant (theorising)
Disclaimer: This is all theory and speculation. I have not tested anything or made my own home assistant yet, I just looked around for libraries and hardware that are likely compatible. I have not fully tested the compatibility or quality of these, this is simply the first iteration of an idea I have.
I just got news that Amazon Alexa has lost 10 billion dollars because their business model failed. This makes me happy, and has also made me realise that you can make your own home assistant.
Here are some of the links to things (I am aware that some are amazon, but it's the most global I could find. I encourage you to find other sellers, this is just what you should need. If you find anything cheaper or more local to where you are, go for it):
Hardware:
Raspberry Pi 4: https://www.canakit.com/raspberry-pi-4-2gb.html (RAM requirements may differ, I may do testing to see what comfortably runs)
8GB MicroSD: https://www.amazon.ca/Verbatim-Premium-microSDHC-Adapter-10-44081/dp/B00CBAUI40/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3CTN6X9TJXRR2&keywords=microsd%2Bcard%2B8gb&qid=1699209597&s=electronics&sprefix=microsd%2Bcard%2B8gb%2Celectronics%2C91&sr=1-3&th=1
Microphone: https://www.amazon.ca/SunFounder-Microphone-Raspberry-Recognition-Software/dp/B01KLRBHGM?th=1
Software:
Coqui STT: https://github.com/coqui-ai/STT
Coqui TTS: https://github.com/coqui-ai/TTS
If you have it set up correctly, you should be able to run both the STT and TTS in realtime (see https://github.com/coqui-ai/TTS/discussions/904).
After all of them are set up, the only thing to do is bridge it all together with software. There are bindings to Rust for both Coqui libraries (https://github.com/tazz4843/coqui-stt and https://github.com/rowan-sl/coqui-rs), and all that's left to do is implement parsing.
The libraries can also be swapped out for different ones if you like. If you can find and implement a DECtalk library that works for the Raspberry Pi, you can use that.
If I ever figure out how to manifest this idea, I will likely make the project modular so that you can use whatever library you want. You can even fork the project and include your own library of choice (if you can bind it to Rust).
Go FOSS!

btw if i can find a clean instrumental for sabm i WILL do a short cover with dectalk paul for a proof of concept lol
i NEED a production of rtc in which Ricky uses an aac device and space age bachelor man is sung by the electric voice vocaloid style. specifically, i had the dectalk paul utau voicebank in mind because of the fact he's an astronaut AND sampled from an old tts software! (i know this realistically couldn't happen due to the script changes and stuff but like, WOULDENT IT BE COOL?)

to the person who took the time to go through defoko's crunchy voice files and make a vcv bank for them : i am getting down on one knee and kissing your hand oh so tenderly.
#the stuff i've seen people do with their vcv is amazing (especially when they make defoko growl holy shit)#like joey's kick back cover with defoko?? ABSOLUTELY KILLER. it grabs you by the throat and whirls you around like a rag doll#i just find it so endearing that people put so much care into a default vb that has (admittedly) poor quality when it comes to recording#but that also results in such an interesting sound especially when you use their vcv#it still has this robotic quality that a vcv seems to usually alleviate and i think that makes defoko sound really unique i love it#also just found out someone made a vcv bank for fucking dectalk paul... it kinda rocks ngl#ppl do crazy stuff with utau and i adore that#once again wishing i could grasp music better so i could mess around with vocal synths more#i have tried playing around with ruko in openutau but i only loaded a ust and listened to how it sounded (which wasn't great??)#(not the fault of the ust maker it just had some pitches i don't think ruko is optimal for singing in)#maybe some day i'll actually sit my ass down and learn to music but not today#today i shall just appreciate utau from afar#defoko#mj.txt

hey ultrakill community which is better DECtalk v2 (funny moonbase alpha voice, easy to find online, has some kind of gender thing going on in a fun way) or atari STSPEECH v2 (similar to S.A.M, the widely accepted voice of v1 but is still distinct, matches the very synthetic sound of the early text to speech programs, but harder to find online)
#if you have to look up what stspeech sounds like i dont blame you#i only know tts voices due to chipspeech#ultrakill#v2 ultrakill

There used to be a plugin that linked into the Steam Chat system that used the Fonix Dec talk (Moonbase Alpha voice program) and it was just as you would imagine it.
Sound was only available to whoever had the program downloaded and running. So it wasnt possible to annoy friends that didn't have it, but you could make such large walls of text, so fast, that it could lag behind by about 5-10 minutes.
Sadly, there was an update a long time ago that cut the systems the program relied on.
There also was a free, standalone voice program... But i can't seem to find the download site anymore. Maybe they shutdown, maybe bought out? I have no idea.
Edit: good news, thanks to the power of the Internet Archive, long may it thrive, DecTalk 5.0 - basic talking is easy, but it's the fancy stuff (like singing and audio settings) that can become complicated:

few screencaps from "getting to know your apple II", which i came across on the internet archive, its either poorly ripped, or the vhs has been affected by decay, so the video was rather distorted and completely corrupted towards the ending

OKOKOKOKOKOK I LOVE THE IBM 704 SO MUCH (no objectum though... I lied, all of the objectum lol)
I know this is a Wizard101 blog but hang on let me just infodump about my main hyperfixation for a minute
The Macintosh pictured above had its own speech voice that sounded like this and I think he has a cute voice too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufGe-reBz5U
Sorry for the glitching/grittiness, it's the only video I could find besides the Steve Jobs demo, and that one sounds kinda muffled.
As for Daisy Bell that song's never been scary to me. I think the IBM 704 (I think I remember hearing that it's actually 704, and 7094 was a typo that just got really popular so now nobody knows if his name is IBM 704 or IBM 7094) sounds so cute and happy when he's singing, and my mom used to sing Daisy Bell to me all the time when I was a little kid so it's also nostalgic for me. I feel kinda bad for him because he's not scary, he's so adorable and sweet >.<
But do you wanna know the best part
There's a character speech synthesizer called Chipspeech that emulates/recreates old speech synthesizers (like DECTalk, the VODER- which came before the IBM 70, making his debut in 1939- and SAM)
And the character based on the IBM 704 is named Dandy. He's a Victorian man with a robot body and he's bi and he's SO HOT OMFG I honestly have an even bigger crush on him than Billy the Cutter

And this is what the Macintosh character looks like (his name is Cidertalk '84 and he's a benevolent cyborg mad scientist, and I think he's gay)

The IBM 704 and Macintalk (and their many friends) are back as adorable, mostly gay robots X3 (Btw, you don't have to like the ship of course but in popular Chipspeech fanon, Cidertalk and Dandy are boyfriends! Mac x PC instead of Mac vs PC lol)
I have a main blog where I fangirl CONSTANTLY about Chipspeech, send me a message if you want to know what it is. You really should check out Chipspeech if you like the IBM 704, the characters are amazing and a lot of people there are super into old tech too ^^
whoever decided to turn daisy bell into a spooky dookie creepypasta song is fucking evil. that computer was brave enough to sing us a delightful little song and you do THIS to him? thats hatsune mikus grandpa dude. fuck you
#tbh my objectum crush on the ibm 704#is probably actually just tied to my being madly in love with dandy#not w101#vocal synth#chipspeech#i'm sorry i go feral whenever speech synths are mentioned#old computers
