Me??? Drawing fan art for Fate, show thy force by @rain-sleet-snow???? More likley than you think!
Tumblr media
Thom’s purple fire burned Blayce’s finicky, merchant-neat clothing, but he was too battle-mad to care, and before Thom could block more effectively or cast a spell that would throw Blayce off him Blayce’s nails were tearing into the skin of his cheek, blood running freely down Thom’s face and over Blayce’s hand, and Thom could hear words from a nightmare, a spell he recognised from the oldest and most dangerous of the grimoires in the library of the City of the Gods, one that would trap him within his own body and turn all his Gift and all his power on his friends, his sister -
This isn't finished but honestly I was too excited ab how it came out to not post, and like, fuck you I do what I want!! And what I want is to post my fanart before it's actually done!!!
Take these finished pieces also tho
Tumblr media
Fair warning there will be more bc Im on an art rampage rn and this fic is fueling it. It's an incredible read, and I fully recommend it to anyone and everyone -- whether you're a fan of Song of the Lioness or not, it makes fo4 a beautiful read. Snow's characterizations are incredible and every single character is so charismatic you find yourself falling in love the more and more you read.
God knows this is absoloutley my favorite version of Thom ever, I love that funky little bastard man and his frogs
Read the fic here
(Seriously, read it, it's amazing)

for the ask meme: your pick of tortall characters/ship, roller derby au
Oh no, there are SO many squads that would make perfect AUs for this (Kel and Maura of Dunlath should get to bond, and also "Aly does roller derby and Alanna objects because she thinks it's not an Honorable Sport" is really funny). But I've done so much with the second generation, so maybe this is a night for the original generation!
Thayet and Buri start the team and are the primary drivers behind it (they're ummmm the Dominating Jewels or something?). They are both absolutely BRUTAL
Alanna gets recruited to their team after--see, I want to say she was on an ice hockey team, but that's just because of the Tortall Knights Fandom Primer, so maybe we'll say she played rugby and then due to Roger Reasons she got cut loose, and roller derby is what she's filling her time with while she plots revenge only she falls in love with it.
I also think that Delia of Eldorne joins this team eventually because she needs a productive outlet, she and Alanna are never going to LIKE each other but they can at least take some opponents out together.
Kara and Kourrem are teenagers Alanna is mentoring and she recruits them to the Jewels. Kourrem takes to it SO much. Kara takes longer to get into it, but when she commits she COMMITS. (Kara and Buri make out at least once, I think, a while into this AU?)
Some years down the line, Onua (absolutely another team member) turns up with Daine and her teammates all sigh and prepare for another feral teen, but they aren't prepared for quite the level of feral that she is.

Summary:
“This is Maura of Dunlath,” Sir Alanna says. “She wanted to talk to you.” Delia can’t quite keep her surprise from her face. “Is that so?” she asks. “My sister Yolane was executed for high treason three weeks ago yesterday,” Maura says, and Delia blinks. “I wanted to ask you some questions.”
Oh hey, were you expecting literally any of the fics I've been posting about for days now? Too bad, you get this instead! The ten-years-on discussion between Delia, Alanna, and Maura of Dunlath that I didn't know I needed until yesterday and have now written. Enjoy!
Excerpt:
Lady Delia of Eldorne does not receive unexpected visitors. The Hag-Daughter comes twice monthly, to instruct her in matters of faith and hear her confessions. In years past, the Lord Provost’s agents at Eldorne called upon her regularly, to ensure her continued good behavior and impress upon her the mercy the Crown had shown in permitting her to live. Now, with over a decade gone by and Delia having long since come to terms with her lot in life, the Provost’s agents have been reassigned elsewhere. Her own family visits rarely, generally only once a year during Midwinter, and she is permitted the company of neither personal friends nor admirers. (Upon first hearing her sentence read out, Delia raged at the phrasing, assuming the King was rubbing salt into the wound that was her failure to find a husband at court. With the benefit of a great deal of forced reflection and perspective, she wonders if it was the King’s awkward attempt at guessing her interests.)
She spends her time reading and working on embroidery. With good behavior has come the right to send and receive letters – combed through by the Lord Provost’s agents and probably others besides – but she has few correspondents. She never had many friends, and what few she did have abandoned her long ago, terrified that treason might be contagious. A great deal of her time is spent in prayer and reflection – the letters she does write are primarily to the Hag-Daughter – and in sanctioned artistic pursuits. Delia never used to be artistic, except in matters of her own presentation, but a decade of enforced solitude and idleness has introduced her to many new ways to pass the time.
It is a monotonous life but not, as she is reminded near-constantly, a bad one. It is a far nicer life than she deserves. She tries her best to be grateful for it.
She has been imprisoned for eleven years and four months when a knock sounds on her parlor door and Rodwin the guardsman announces that she has visitors. Delia sets down her embroidery, a slight frown on her face. It is too early in the month for the Hag-Daughter and the wrong time of year for any of her relations to undertake their once-yearly pilgrimage to gawk at her.
“Enter,” she calls, and it is all she can do to keep from gawking herself as the door opens and in strides in Sir Alanna the Lioness, looking like she would rather be absolutely anywhere else.

You know, the Song of the Lioness quartet gets a whole lot funnier when you headcanon every main character as a disaster bi just losing their mind at any given point in time.

Just finished rereading the Song of the Lioness series and I have thoughts...
One: I definitely just blocked out the age differences between Alanna and all of her love interests.
Two: The first law Jon made when he became king was ABSOLUTELY that bringing people back from the dead was ILLEGAL.
Three: I’d like to see a glimpse of Delia in one of the next books Tamora Pierce writes. She has been imprisoned for life... So she should be around and I’d love to see how her character changed (and/or stayed the same) during imprisonment.

We're Two Sides of the Same Coin; Yule See
We're two sides of the same coin; Yule see by purplepotatoblob
In this Harry Potter-Tortall crossover, the guys (Jon, Gary, George, Ron and Harry) come swarming to poor Raoul for advice on how to ask their crushes (namely Thayet Jian Wilima, Cythera Elden, Alanna Trebond, Hermione Granger and Ginny Weasley) out to Yule, and meanwhile, Buri is being similarly tortured by the girls. Stuck in this terrible agony-aunt-advice predicament, Raoul and Buri must find a way to make their friends' wishes come true... all the while harboring secret feelings for each other... will they admit their feelings before it's too late?

Thom of Trebond
Thom of Trebond was not an innocent man.
But he was also not a guilty man.
Sure, he was born innocent, as all babies are.
But he grew up.
His father ignored him in favor of his tombs and scrolls.
Thom of Trebond became a little frayed around the edges.
He had a passion for sorcery. Sorcery that his father strictly forbade. Sorcery that Maude refused to teach.
So he snuck off to the library in the dead of night to search for scrolls on magic.
But his father had burned them all.
And then he was old enough. He was going to become a knight. But he wanted to become a sorcerer.
So Alanna, his twin, proposed a switch.
And then Maude looked into the fire and Alanna saw something.
(It's not fair, he thought)
And so Thom of Trebond became a bit torn.
And they parted ways. Thom to the Mithran Cloisters, and Alanna to become a knight.
At the Mithran Cloisters, he had to start from the basics.
You're still a child, they'd say.
So in the dead of night, he'd sneak off to the library to look at tombs and scrolls.
By the time Alanna had completed being a page, Thom was well beyond mastery level.
But he was being watched.
But, eventually, he got sick and tired of playing dumb, and he passed his written mastery exams.
And so everybody ignored him. They were upset.
He was lonely.
And so Thom of Trebond started to tear.
Then Alanna and George Cooper came to visit him.
(Really Alanna, falling for the King of the Thieves?)
And they told him what had been happening.
Alanna said he'd be lonely.
But he wasn't.
(Yes, he was.)
With no time to waste, he passed his mastery exams and made his way to the palace.
And Alanna was right, this Duke Roger of Conté was dangerous.
But she confronted him anyways.
Alanna was revealed as a girl and she killed Duke Roger.
She went adventuring.
He tore a little bit.
Then Delia of Eldorne told him that only the greatest sorcerers could raise the dead.
He was a great sorcerer.
So he took some of Alanna’s Gift and raised Duke Roger.
His Gift was blood red and dirty.
He was weak and dying.
Then everybody avoided him. He did something unnatural.
Alanna said he’d be lonely.
She was right.
And then the Duke was apparently still evil and tried to kill Jon.
And Alanna ran up and found him.
She leaned over him.
He smiled.
Sister
And he closed his eyes.
And so, maybe he was torn and frayed, but he was still loved.
Alanna said he’d be lonely.
But how could he be, with all of these friends and family he made?

Figured out that while Delia of Eldorne bugs me for being a cliched Mean Feminine & Sexual Girl = Villain, I am bothered most by her being Roger’s minion rather than a villain in her own right. Manipulating and pursuing Prince Jonathan just because Delia’d like a shot at the Crown is sufficient motivation all on it’s own, but instead we get that awful scene of her simpering at Roger’s feet.
Was chatting about sci-fi/fantasy with my mum and talking about how neat it was that Tamora Pierce set out to write a female protagonist who has sex with multiple love interests and isn’t shamed by the narrative for it (get it, Alanna) and this contrasts with Anne McCaffrey creating worlds where ostensibly sleeping around is just fine, but her female protagonists still only ever get one love interest. They tend to settle with the first man they bed, or if they’re older protagonists with backstory, they...pretty much never mention their previous lovers.
Meanwhile, Anne McCaffrey’s female antagonists have sex with multiple partners, and use sex to get men on their side, or to exert control over people. Kylara and Avril Bitra are who come to mind. I can’t remember if terrifying Bandit Leader Thella has sex with anyone or not. It’s been a while. And I haven’t re-read McCaffrey’s non-Pern stuff in a long time, so maybe she does this less in other series.
But the difference between McCaffrey’s female villains and Delia of Eldorne is that they’re all villains on their own. Kylara is just out for her own pleasure and sense of importance. Avril Bitra is trying to get off-planet with gemstones for herself. Thella was denied the chance to rule on her own and turned to crime for power, profit, and vengeance. None of them are subservient.
Summary: I hate sexist slut-shaming cliches, but I hate the subservience more.

This is a request for All your Tortall … and Jon thoughts 👀
I mean, if I shared ALL my thoughts, I wouldn't get anything else done tonight, and while I do love having tumblr conversations, I do have other things to do with my life. But I will share a collection!
1. Re: Jon, since this has become a Jon Conte Confessional over the past day somehow: in a lot of ways, I am fond of Jon! I have always rooted for George in the love triangle, but I was fond of Jon, and I think that as Privileged Boys Who Don't Get Made Fun Of Enough To Teach Them Humility In Fiction go, there are many worse case scenarios. But these days, I do get annoyed with his smug sense that everything will always go his way when he's younger and also the way he is with Alanna in In the Hand of the Goddess, where he acts like a dick a LOT and only moves to finally seduce her when she's performing femininity. Like, that's sure a thing. And that's before we get to the Kel books, which I won't get into tonight, because we're only two books into the Great Tortall Reread and I've got to pace myself.
2. You can definitely see Pierce feeling out her worldbuilding in the Alanna quartet! I remember things being a lot more settled and standard by the time we hit the Daine books, and there are so many things from the Alanna books that got dropped! The way that magic is perceived and how it's used really change throughout the quartet and after the quartet, for instance. And the first Alanna book especially made me very fascinated with the anthropological history of Tortall. Who are these Old Ones, dipping everything in not!plastic to maintain it? I'm guessing if she had the books to write over again, Pierce would cut that out, maybe make Lightning a divine gift, maybe have the Nameless Ones be stranded immortals, Stormwings or something, a hint of the Immortals quartet to come, but what is there is very interesting to me.
3. George is the Best Fictional Man and I love him, and also it is deeply hilarious that he is 17 at the start of the Alanna books. He's a BABY.
4. An incomplete list of people who deserve better for one reason or another, where "better" can mean "just more narrative depth" or "a wholly different arc, thanks": Thom of Trebond, Delia of Eldorne, Alex of Tirragen.
5. I know Woman Who Rides Like a Man has its problems, but I'm excited for Alanna to mentor and befriend some ladies (and then the arrival of Thayet and Buri in Lioness Rampant, thank goodness!). These early books sure have some Not Like Other Girls syndrome. (Which I know is something Pierce has addressed over the years! I'm not blaming who she is now for them, just commenting on my experience of reading.)
6. My only overarching thought: I'm so sad that since Alianne, Pierce has only written Tortall prequels. I am, as a rule, anti-prequel, and there are post-Aly stories I'd really love to see more than the Beka Cooper books or the Numair prequel. I want to keep seeing Tortall grow and change! Where's my Maura of Dunlath book? Where's one about Dove as she grows up and takes on queenship? Where's my first lady Rogue? I haven't read 3/4 of the prequel books I'm complaining about, but regardless of how good they may be, I'd still rather watch Tortall (and the rest of its world) grow into a happier future.
