The History of Dentzel Carousels and the Burlington Carousel Festival 2023
To say I have a sense of place may be an understatement…I’ve lived in the same town on the same street for almost my whole life! I’m very grateful that I’ve been able to travel and see so much of the world, but as I get older, I appreciate the small town I grew up in more and more.
One of the fondest memories of my childhood was going to City Park in the summer to ride the rides and the carousel was always my favorite ride! At the time, I had no idea just how special this carousel was!
What I know now is that Burlington’s historic, hand carved Dentzel Carousel is a work of art that we are so fortunate to have!
The Dentzel Carousel factory was founded in 1867 in Germantown, Pennsylvania by Gustav Dentzel and it became a synonym for excellence in the pioneering and development of the hand carved carousel. Some Dentzel carousels are still in working order today, including the carousel in our City Park.
The city of Burlington purchased the Dentzel carousel in 1948 from an amusement park in Genoa, Ohio. It was built by the famed Dentzel Carousel Company around 1910 near Philadelphia and there are only 25 Dentzel Carousels still in operation in the United States. Other locations include Disneyland, the San Francisco Zoo, Six Flags over Texas, and Raleigh’s Pullen Park.
In 1948, Burlington’s City manager, W.H. Carper, had a vision that the carousel would bring great joy for citizens in Burlington and he was correct. In 1948, the carousel cranked up for the first time and there were reportedly 12000 attendees. At that time, a ride was 5 cents.
For a city the size of Burlington, the Carousel was considered quite a treat and residents from surrounding communities came to ride the carousel. It soon became a regional draw and still is today.
The Burlington Dentzel Carousel is a menagerie carousel featuring hand carved wooden animals including horses, rabbits, cats, ostriches, a stag, a lion, a tiger, and a giraffe. Some of the animals are “jumpers” which go up and down and some are “standers” which are stationary.
In the mid 1980’s, the carousel had fallen into disrepair and local resident Diane Vaught helped spearhead a grassroots community led effort to restore the carousel. At that time, the animals were painted in bright primary colors and the rounding boards (pictured above middle left) had been painted over with cartoon characters like Micky Mouse. Originally the rounding boards were paintings from different historical eras depicting wildlife scenes and landscapes.
Ms. Vaught and her team of volunteers restored the carousel to its original appearance. For the animals, they stripped the paint, worked with resins to strengthen the wood, and repainted with historically appropriate colors.
For the rounding boards, they delicately scraped off layers of paint to reveal the original scenes underneath. From there, artists recreated the colors from those original scenes. Ms. Vaught worked with local textile machinery manufacturer Lessona to cast new metal gears to replace the old, deteriorated originals.
In 2018, the Dentzel carousel was again in need of refurbishment and the Burlington City Council voted to enlist Carousel and Carvings, a specialty restoration and manufacturing company from Marion, Ohio, for the job.
The new carousel house is a state-of the-art rotunda within the Burlington City Park. Its huge glass doors can be opened and closed, allowing for year-round use. The Carousel House also includes an event space with a view of the Carousel that can be rented by the public. The original Carousel house has been repurposed as a covered pavilion.
I’m a firm believer in historic preservation. The company that designed and built our carousel had a vision that was carried out by artisans that specialized in their craft, which has become rare today. Honoring the art of the past and preserving it for future generations is important.
The meticulous carving of the carousel animals is breathtaking and something that cannot be replicated today! I am so happy that our city chose to restore this beautiful part of our history as the centerpiece of City Park. It is an honor for me to be able to take my grandsons to experience our Dentzel Carousel!
The Carousel’s Wurlitzer Band Organ was restored as well and stands proudly alongside as the ride goes around!
Burlington City Park features other rides to be enjoyed by children and adults including a train that goes around the perimeter of the park, a boat ride (see below), cars on a track and an airplane ride. One of my favorites as a child was the boats and it gives me so much pleasure to see my grandsons riding these wooden boats!
The rounding boards that line the upper circumference of the Carousel (pictured above, middle left) are paintings from different historical eras, mostly depicting wildlife scenes and landscapes.
As you can see from the pictures above, the detail of the carousel animals is beautifully intricate and will be appreciated for years to come!
The City of Burlington is proud to announce that on May 6 and 7, 2023, the City will host the first Carousel Festival since 2019 celebrating the return of a Burlington icon.
The event features live music & performances, an artisan market, food vendors and a fun-packed Kids Zone as well as the parks amusement rides!

i have NO idea if you'd be able to do this one for me, but i hope you can! my grandparents have these horses, but i've never been able to read the plaques & my grandparents don't know where they got them from other than they're antiques.
sorry for the wizard guy covering one of the horses, this was the best picture we could get.
Tumblr media
it's no worries if you can't (since i don't know if you do ceramics lol), but either way. some horses for you to look at.
Sure! They're Impulse Giftware reproductions of real life carousel horses :D

By John Zalar, from the Philadelphia Toboggan Co.

By Gustav Dentzel, from Knotts Berry Farm

By Stein & Goldstein. Can't find the original one, but I found a similar horse, also by S&G, from Forest Lake Amusement Park.

By Charles Carmel. I can't find the original, but I did find a similar horse by Carmel on an auction site, with no details about its history.

By Charles I. D. Looff. I think the leaflet is lying - if Looff ever designed a stander with a closed mouth, there are no photos of it online. But I did find another Looff stander to compare it to.
EDIT: I'm sleep deprived and didn't realize I used the wrong photos for the Dentzel and S&G figures, just pretend those are the detailed Impulse Giftware figures with plaques, and not the smaller cheaper versions 😭

I stumbled upon some early deigns for a custom toy carousel alongside this little wooden cat. I'm unsure if it was ever finished and delivered or not. I will do some more digging in the new year to see if I can learn more about it, and maybe uncover the other pieces of it. Clearly this little cat was designed by a master craftsman, who even saw fit to carve their initials into the saddle. I especially like it's little book holster!
(This is my @artists-guild-of-exandria project for Chetney's Toy Workshop! I originally planned to design an entire Mighty Nein carousel, but I injured my wrist and the line work was too much for me to finish in time. Caleb's piece was already lined, so I just slapped some wood texture on it and a bit of shading so I'd have something finished in time. I do still plan to finish the rest of the carousel come the new year, as I already have the sketches done. The pieces are all based on real carousel horses or other critters and in the case of Caleb cat here, it is based on the wonderfully whimsical deign of the Dentzel cat.)

We went to the Merry-To Round Museum
History
The doors to the Merry-Go-Round Museum opened to the public on July, 14, 1990 but the idea was born on October 1, 1988 when the U.S. Postal Service issued four carousel stamps. Paul Calle of Stamford, Connecticut designed the first set of stamps. One of the featured animals was from Cedar Point’s Kiddieland carousel. The first day issue ceremony was held at the Sandusky amusement park.
The block of stamps included a Gustav Dentzel deer (ca. 1895), Charles Looff goat and camel (ca. 1880), and the King Armored horse by Daniel Muller (ca. 1925), The King horse is from Cedar Point’s Kiddieland carousel. This particular King horse is considered to be one of the rarest and most beautiful of all carousel figures.
To make the first day issue special, a group of local citizens borrowed the vacant former Sandusky Post Office and gathered together a wonderful carousel display to celebrate the Cedar Point horse as well as other figures.
The group hoped for a few hundred visitors, but surprisingly more than 2,000 came from across the nation to share the joy of carousels. In the following months a non-profit corporation was formed with the mission, “to preserve and promote the art and history of the carousel.”
The corporation purchased the unique post office building, which is on the National Register of Historic Places and preserving the building became part of the mission. The Corporation received a 501 c (3) status and fund raising began soon after.
The Merry-Go-Round Museum display artifacts that add to the public’s awareness, knowledge, and appreciation of the history of the carousel. Dentzel carving shop tools are a permanent exhibit, along with a working woodcarving shop, and the museum’s own machine, (circa 1939 Allan Herschell Corporation). The museum continues to seek artifacts from amusement parks, carnivals, and private individuals, and encourages long and short-term loans of memorabilia and antiques from earlier periods of the amusement and carousel industry.

Carousel Fun
As Friday morning arrived, I was feeling much better, so after our usual coffee and games and a quick nosh, Nancy and I decided to drive up to Albany to visit the Historical Carousel Museum. Some friends of hers had recommended it last summer when we were visiting up here.
Wendy Kirbey first conceived of building a carousel after a vacation to Missoula, Montana, in 2002, where a community carousel project had revitalized the town. Kirby wondered if a carousel could do the same for Albany, which, like many small towns, had lost much of its local restaurant and retail traffic to suburban malls. One downtown business after another was closing its doors, and, as Kirbey remembers, “It was becoming seedy.”
Albany’s carousel project officially got under way in 2004, eventually spiraling into a full-blown non-profit association that attracted volunteer artisans and sponsors from all around Oregon’s Willamette Valley. The doors to the carousel and museum opened in August 2017. Admission and tours of the museum are free. So are visits to the areas where the carousel figures are carved and painted. Carousel rides are only $2.
The museum features displays of items loaned by the Dentzel family, the first creators of American carousels. These animals were carved and painted in the late 1800s, and are highly detailed, with intricate artistry and craftsmanship.
Creating carousel animals takes a large amount of time and artistry. Local volunteers can spend as many as 1,500 hours carving—and another 800 hours painting—to complete just one carousel creature. These works of art can cost as much as $5,000 each.
The carousel itself is powered by an original 1909 mechanism donated to the museum by the National Carousel Association and Bill Dentzel, great-grandson of the founder of the Dentzel Carousel Corporation, Gustav Dentzel.
Gustav immigrated to the United States in 1860 from Germany. Having carved carousels for his father before immigrating he opened a cabinet making shop in Philadelphia. Before long, he tired of the making cabinets and decided to build a small portable carousel that he could travel with around the country.
After finding that people had a great enthusiasm for the carousel, Gustav went into the carousel building business full-time in 1867, hiring other woodworkers who had immigrated from Europe. He is credited with introducing the first steam-powered carousel and the use of menagerie animals, such as cats, lions, tigers, and deer, in addition to horses and chariots.
This classic carousel mechanism donated to the Albany project took more than ten years to return to working order. Every wooden gear tooth, every mirror panel, and every motor that turns the carousel platform had to be meticulously restored.
After concluding our carousel visit, we lunched at a little place in the downtown area called Camille’s Bistro. It had a good menu and excellent service, and when we return to explore more of Albany, we’ll certainly dine there again.
Interestingly, there are about 20 towns and cities named Albany, which comes from the Celtic word for Scotland. The one I was most familiar with was, of course, Albany, New York. But there are also towns by that name in California, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Vermont, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
Albany, Oregon, is the county seat of Linn County, with a population of about 56,000. It is located east of Corvallis and south of Salem. It is a predominantly farming and manufacturing city that settlers founded around 1848. In addition to farming and manufacturing, the city’s economy depends on retail trade, health care, and social assistance.

A Growing Community and a Celebration...Haand Ceramics + The City of Burlington
The City of Burlington and Haand Ceramics announce a hand-painted line of commemorative plates celebrating the Burlington Carousel Festival!
Burlington’s Historic, hand carved Dentzel Carousel is treasured by our small community. Brought to City Park in 1948, the beauty and craftsmanship of the rideable work of art has created special memories for generations of residents (including me) and is very much a part of the city’s identity.
Another important part of Burlington’s identity was manufacturing (historically, textiles and hosiery), and while the life sciences industry may employ more residents these days, the remaining factory buildings throughout town are a constant reminder of that history.
Haand Ceramics is located in an old textile mill near Burlington’s downtown at the corner of Tucker and Maple Streets. The mill was originally the Willowbrook Hosiery Mill and is an ideal location for the pottery store and studio.
Haand was started in 2012 by Mark Warren and Chris Pence, friends who met in high school in Jacksonville, Florida. Mark had recently finished a two-year fellowship at Penland School of Craft in Bakersville, North Carolina in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Chris had studied business and accounting in graduate school and left his role as a corporate accountant to start Haand, which was originally run out of a decrepit farmhouse with no potable water and mercurial electricity outside of Durham. As the business grew, they moved operations to a warehouse in Eli Whitney and in 2017, Mark and Chris moved the business to the hosiery mill on Tucker Street.
Today, they employ a team of 30 and supply pottery to restaurants and hotels worldwide. They sell locally from a showroom in the mill and through their website to homes all over the United States.
Haand makes over 75,000 pieces of handmade pottery per year in their small workshop! And…I’m excited to announce a new partnership between the City of Burlington and HAAND. Haand is making a commemorative dessert plate featuring an animal from the Dentzel Carousel’s menagerie in celebration of the 32nd Annual Carousel Festival. This year the featured animal is the tiger and they plan to feature a different animal each year for future Carousel Festivals. It’s a perfect marriage of the Carousel’s beautiful craftsmanship with the important role of manufacturing in Burlington.
“To have a publicly funded space like Burlington City Park is a rare and true gift to Alamance County. I know firsthand that this park is a perfect destination where I can bring my kid and we feel part of the local community.” stated Mark Warren.  “The Carousel itself is a work of art and craftsmanship, something to be appreciated on its own. I chose the tiger for our first commemorative plate because I’ve always found a childlike enjoyment in painting circus animals.”
Visitors to the Carousel Festival can enter a raffle to win a set of two of this year’s hand-painted porcelain plates by filling out a survey about ways to improve the Carousel Festival for future years.
A limited edition run of the hand-painted plates will be available for purchase at Haand’s showroom at 413 Tucker Street, or at  www.haand.us starting Friday, May 5th. Haand’s showroom is open Monday - Friday from 11am - 4pm, and Saturday from 12pm - 4pm. You can also visit them for a tour as part of Downtown Burlington’s Fourth Friday Art Walks on the Fourth Friday of each month, from 5:30 - 9:00 pm.  If you are local, this is a great experience and you’ll definitely leave with a piece of pottery…or 2!
Small to mid-size companies like Haand represent the majority of the Burlington’s firms and jobs and are truly the backbone of Burlington’s business community.  HAAND’S business continues to grow and one of their newest collaborations includes a beautiful line of hand-blown glassware with Christopher Kerr-Ayer, and a collection of modern heirlooms curated by Vivian Howard, a North Carolinian chef and hospitality expert.
The 32nd Annual Burlington Carousel Festival will be held at Burlington City Park on Saturday, May 6 and Sunday from 10am-6pm with an evening concert featuring Crawford & Power and Ryan Perry from 6pm – 10pm and on Sunday, May 7 from noon-5pm. The Carousel Festival features live music and performances, an artisan market, food trucks and food vendors, a beer garden, an action-packed Kids Zone and free rides on the newly restored Carousel and other amusement rides that call City Park home. More information here!
To download the video of the hand painting process, more images of Haand ceramics, and their manufacturing process, as well as higher resolution images of the the tiger from Burlington’s Carousel, go to this link: https://we.tl/t-XNguMsNDdt.
I hope to see you there!
