Minnesota Twins-Atlanta Braves Series Preview
6.26.23-Sonny Gray RHP (4-1) 2.56 ERA Vs. Spencer Strider RHP (8-2) 3.93 ERA
6.27.23-Joe Ryan RHP (8-4) 2.98 ERA Vs. Bryce Elder RHP (5-1) 2.40 ERA
6.28.23-Kenta Maeda RHP (1-4) 6.86 ERA Vs. AJ Smith-Shawyer RHP (1-0) 4.32 ERA
The Twins At A Glance- The Twins are back on track with four wins in their past five games. The lead in the American League Central is up to two games and the team heads to Atlanta to play a good Braves team this week. Byron Buxton’s back appears to be better as he pinch-hit at the end of Sunday’s game. Jose De Leon will miss time with an elbow injury that he suffered on Saturday night. He threw his last warm-up pitch then immediately grabbed his elbow before exiting the game. Dallas Keuchel threw four innings and gave up a run on four hits with four strikeouts in his Saints debut on Sunday. Kyle Garlick cleared waivers and accepted his assignment to St. Paul. Royce Lewis is hitting .333 in June with three homers and ten RBI. Carlos Correa has five homers in June and Max Kepler has hit four in a resurgent month. Brock Stewart has been nails with a 0.70 ERA over 25 2/3 innings this year. Jordan Balazovic has thrown five shutout innings since getting called up. Griffin Jax hasn’t allowed a run over his past 14 2/3 innings.
The Braves At A Glance- The Braves are the best team in the National League at (50-27). They lead the East by six games over the Marlins. The Phillies and Mets have been major disappointments, so the Braves have capitalized. Atlanta is (17-4) in the month of June and just took two of three games from Cincinnati. Ronald Acuna has been their best hitter with a .328 average, sixteen homers, and forty-seven RBI. Eddie Rosario is hitting .357 with eight homers and nineteen RBI in the month of June. Orlando Arcia has taken over since the team lost Dansby Swanson in free agency. He is hitting .318 on the year and leads the National League for All-Star voting at shortstop. The Braves rotation holds a 3.94 ERA, which is sixth-best in baseball. Bryce Elder has been the most-consistent starter with a 2.40 ERA over ninety innings of work. The Atlanta bullpen has a 3.72 ERA, which is seventh-best in MLB. Jesse Chavez has been a bright spot and has allowed just five runs over twenty-nine innings. Michael Tonkin has found a spot in the Atlanta bullpen with a 3.00 ERA. Nick Anderson, Joe Jimenez, and Kirby Yates have helped round out a good bullpen.
What To Watch For- The Braves are (14-12) all-time against the Twins. These teams last played in a thrilling series in 2019. Miguel Sano hit a walk-off homer off Chris Martin in the series opener. The Braves handily won the next two games and the Twins turned a triple play in the final game. Sonny Gray is (0-2) with a 3.23 ERA in five starts against the Braves. Kenta Maeda is (2-0) with a 2.00 ERA in three starts against Atlanta. Matt Olson has two career homers off Maeda. The Braves have a lot of former Twins on the roster. Michael Tonkin, Dereck Rodriguez, and Eddie Rosario all spent time with the Twins. Even Nick Anderson was in the Twins farm system before getting to the big leagues with the Rays. The Twins are playing better baseball and get a pair of good teams in the Braves and Orioles this week with an off day on Thursday.
