meeting on a train ride
Emma’s taking the train to check out Columbia. She’s finishing up her undergraduate work at Tisch, and much to her surprise, she was accepted to Columbia for a master’s degree in film studies. Apparently, all those papers about The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink caught someone’s eye. But for as long as Emma’s lived in New York City (her entire life), she’s never made it over to Columbia. She just never thought it was worth it to see something she could never have.
Until now. When she’s just a signature away from having it.
She’s sitting on the train alone, earbuds in, listening to what is currently her favorite song: “Untouchable Face” by Ani DeFranco. Her crush on Joel is getting worse by the minute, and she just can’t grow up. It’s like she likes being miserable – loving someone who will never love her back so she doesn’t have to confront all the things she hates about herself. Better to feel scorned than to really be that way.
In the middle of the song, Emma looks around. She notices a guy sitting across from her with a paper in his lap. She recognizes it. It’s the agenda for the admitted students’ reception at Columbia. He’s a little older than Emma – not old, but definitely older than she is, probably thirty or so – but that’s definitely the agenda for the incoming film students. She takes a better look at the guy’s face. He’s cute, too. Dark brown hair. Stark green eyes. Maybe he’s a little more than cute. Without knowing that in the world has just come over her, Emma speaks to him.
“Are you going to Columbia?” she asks him.
The guy looks up and gives her a funny half smile.
“Uh, yeah,” he says. “Are you?”
“Yeah. Well, I haven’t signed my commitment papers yet. But I’m pretty sure I’m going to.”
“Right on. You going for film studies?”
“Yeah. It’s what my bachelor’s degree is in. Well. It’s what it will be in. I have to graduate first. And with this dumb science credit I need, sometimes I’m a little worried about that.”
Emma bites her lip. She doesn’t know why she’s sharing all of this with a stranger, but he has the prettiest eyes. She would tell all sorts of secrets to those pretty eyes if she had them (the eyes or the secrets).
“I wish I had a bachelor’s degree in film,” the guy says. “Mine’s just in English. But I wrote pretty much only about film, so maybe that counts.”
Emma nods.
“I’ll count it,” she says. “What’s your name?”
“My name?”
“Your name.”
The guy laughs a little.
“You tell me yours.”
“I’m not going first. I’m a woman. I’m not stupid.”
“What does being a woman have to do with being stupid? Or, you know. With not being stupid, apparently.”
“If I share my name first, then I make myself vulnerable first,” Emma says. “And I’m not about that. So, if you want to know my name, tell me yours first.”
The guy laughs a little more now. His eyes sure do look pretty.
“Derrick,” he says. “Spelled like the thing on the oil rig.”
Emma nods.
“I’m Emma,” she says. “Spelled like the Jane Austen novel.”
The guy – Derrick – smiles like he might almost like the fact that Emma O’Connor is talking to him. In his defense, he doesn’t know she’s dorky yet.
“Nice to meet you,” he says.
Emma’s not sure how she knows it, but this will not be the last conversation she has with Derrick from the train. Not even close.
