The closing frame of the Derry Girls finale being Joe (eldest) and Anna (youngest) the last to leave the polling station hand in hand and jumping over the threshold into a new era together was just fucking fantastic.

jerin-antis, i see you, i get it i really do, but it’s not about shipping, it’s not about another straight couple on tv, it’s not even about the friends to lovers arc, or shoehorning romance into where it doesn’t belong. this couple was coming from the start, there has been foreshadowing as early as season 1. lisa mcgee is utilising centuries old conventions that are a a staple part of irish drama and literature. it’s about the fact that two young people from totally opposing backgrounds can come together and fall in love and be happy even when their countries have a vitriolic relationship, even when history isn’t on their side, even when peace is tenuous, and the future is an unknown entity. it’s about this show being more than a sitcom, more than a simple family comedy, it’s about acknowledging past representations of anglo-irish romance, it’s about picking at the tensions which still exist in cross-community relationships, it’s about using this couple as a conduit for hope!!!!

random thought but i really like how s3e5 confirms that clare came out to her parents at some point after the end of season 1 and 1) the show didn't make a big deal out of it (it was literally confirmed in a random conversation), 2) geraldine and sean had a positive reaction, and 3) clare is (presumably) comfortable with other adults knowing since basically all the parents knew. idk i just think it's nice that beyond her initial coming out to her friends clare being a lesbian is just... a thing. it comes up a lot but she isn't constantly a victim of homophobia, doesn't hate herself for it and didn't have a long, drawn-out, angsty coming out storyline. like she's just happily existing as a lesbian in 90s northern ireland and idk it's just nice to see :)

I don’t know if this was deliberate, but during that shot at the end, where they’re all hugging Clare, then Orla comes up and puts her wings around the whole group, it really put me in mind of the Children of Lir, the Irish myth about the four siblings who are turned into swans by their evil stepmother. Based on the illustrations of the many, many books of Celtic Mythology For The Kiddies I had, it seems like it is/was common to depict them with the sister sheltering her wee brothers with her wings.
And there was that running gag about folks thinking they were dressed up as swans, plus that wee nod to Irish mythology right at the start, with the guy on the radio asking what the ancient Celtic name for Hallowe’en was. So maybe, maybe...
Apart from anything else, the Children of Lir is a story about tragedy, about loss and grief. But it’s also about the passage of time, and political and religious change in Ireland. So whether intended or not, it’s a very apt parallel, and it choked me right up.

That time we were slagging off Deidre Mallon's pelmet, it's all on there. What's wrong with Deidre Mallon's pelmet? It doesn't match her tie-backs, Gerry.

okay, im gonna just say one thing: bad things happen to queer characters. i understand the upset around the fact that it happened immediately after clare’s first kiss, but it shows that bad shit can happen as well as good things, and sometimes things intersect. and it’s not as if bad things dont happen to the others!!! james was abandoned by his mother TWICE, erin’s dog died,, as a group they’ve all gone through weird shit (obviously not as tragic but still), i think it’s a disservice to queer characters to write stories where we only have good things. shit happens to everyone, and it provided a lot of emotional weight to the show, and an outstanding performance from nicola coughlan.

some of you really cannot see the forest for the trees here. i keep seeing posts or comments that either frame ‘jerin becoming canon’ as some kind of win for people who are obsessed with shipping regardless of context or consider ‘jerin becoming canon’ as the show selling out and becoming some contrived romance where the main girl and the main guy get together. you’re BOTH WRONG. this is something so much more nuanced and meaningful, we are SUPPOSED to view this relationship on a symbolic level, the romance between them is DELIBERATELY being paralleled with the development of the peace process. the final episode is intentionally about the Good Friday Agreement and the whole ‘I can wait’ line is foreshadowing BOTH the the realisation of this romantic relationship AND the political agreement that will bring lasting widespread peace to northern ireland. you cannot separate these things from each other, you cannot make this a ‘fandom’ or ‘shipping’ grievance, if you really cannot see beyond that you are fundamentally misunderstanding what derry girls is doing
