Do you think that when Kathy got pregnant that Deidre thought she’d end up looking after the baby? Like here is her incredibly flighty baby sister, and she is pregnant herself she can’t think of what it would be like to look after her baby and her sisters baby at the same time, and then Kathy goes to get an abortion in England and she feels relieved. Deidre watches Mary take care of her little girl, and help Sarah take care of her little girl as well, and Deidre may feel like she dodged a bullet a bit, she has her own boy and her own little girl and they are a handful and she is glad that doesn’t have to balance Kathy and her baby as well.

And then Kathy pitches back up years later with a teenage boy that she never actually aborted, and leaves him behind when she goes on her merry way again. And Deidre ends up raising her sisters son like she thought she would all those years ago. And it’s harder than it needed to be because this teenage boy doesn’t really know this family or the place that he has been abandoned with, and Deidre doesn’t know him either and maybe if Kathy had just done this in the first place this could all be much simpler.

I don’t know maybe I’ll write a fic about it but I just have a lot of thoughts about Deidre Mallon expecting to have to look after Kathy’s baby, thinking that she missed that bullet and then ending up raising James anyway.

for more than a year i've been thinking about michelle and niall mallon, and about james maguire, and i finally wrote something about it.

technically set in the maybe someday universe (and sharp-eyed readers will catch that this leads right up to the beginning of smoke break), but that’s really all tangential. this fic stands on its own.

Summary:

James remembers vividly the way Michelle’s anger had simmered until it was pouring off her in waves the first time his Auntie Deidre had called the empty upstairs bedroom, “James’s room.” __________ James Maguire meets Niall Mallon.

My Derry Girls head canons (James edition)

The night James decided to stay in Derry (after the celebrations whey may have had) Michelle allows James to choose a movie, they both fall asleep and Michelle is cuddling James like if she ever lets go he would leave, Deidre comes in from the night shift she smiles at the pair of them. 

Every Tuesday James and Michelle have movie night because the night Michelle’s parents work nights.  On this night they make popcorn and take turns choosing the film. They both wear their comfy clothes and do facemasks and foot spas. No one else knows about it, it is their secret and they never make plans on a Tuesday evening because they look forward to it.

Joe is the one who bought James the Derry football jersey because he noticed the girls have been dressing him up more recently (not that James minded). Joe just wanted to make sure that James still has some ‘masculine’ energy in his life

After Sean Devlin dies, Clare and her mother stay at the Mallon’s for a few weeks. James immediately gives up his room for Clare and her mother. He sleeps on the sofa and doesn't complain once.

On James' eighteenth birthday Joe, Gerry and Martin (Michelle’s dad) take him out for his first official pint as an adult. They have a pint for Sean (Clare’s dad) because they know that he would have liked to have been there too. 

James joins the local Gaelic club (Irish football) to try and make some male friends, even though he doesn’t understand the rules. Much to everyone's surprise he is a rather talented goalkeeper. James' team made it to their first ever final in 10 years. James saves the final goal leading Derry to victory. As soon as the game ends The Mallon’s, McCool’s and Quinn’s run on the field and congratulate him before any of his teammates or coach can.

James is baby Anna's favourite out of all Erin friends because he is the only one who is willing to play with her. Her favourite is when he reads to her, because he does funny voices. 

 Every time Sister Michael walks past the bin James pissed in she has a chuckle to herself.

Erin is the first one to take James to the toilet

James catches baby Anna’s first steps on his video camera while Mary and Gerry are out. Mary is upset that she missed the moment but she is forever grateful that James caught the moment and she treasures it forever. 

Both James and Clare have a crush on the waitress who works at the café where the gang hangout. They often make fools of themselves in front of her like mixing up their words and talking nonsense to her.  James, Claire and Erin all feel betrayed when they find out she is going out with David Donnelly. 

James and Orla often have a competition to see who can hold their breath longest. Orla is undefeated but James is determined to beat her someday.

James and Erin become school prefects in their final year of school (to enhance their UCAS application form). Meaning they have to attend a lot of school school meetings and have to hang out with Jenny and Aisling more than usual. Erin starts to get jealous because she notices that James is hanging out with Aisling more, but it turns out they are both huge doctor who fans and they both try to settle who the best doctor is (they don't agree).

The Quinn’s take the gang camping again and boys have to sleep in Jim’s tent. James has to sleep in between Joe and Gerry to act as a barrier so the pair don’t argue. 

Gerry needs help with some deliveries on a Saturday and asks James for a hand, Erin also volunteers to come. On their way back home Gerry’s lorry breaks down and they are stranded in a random area between Donegal and Derry. They walk to the nearest pub so Gerry can ring a mechanic. James and Erin notice that Jenny and Aisling are in the pub. They informed them that there is a pub and asked them if they would like to join their team. Erin scoffs in their face and tells them that they don't need them and she and James can win without them. James and Erin come last and Jenny and Aisling win. It's all they hear about for the next week at school.

What happened on leavers night 20 years ago?

All the husbands are wearing the same blue suits that were on sale from Dunnes for the school reunion. And Michelle’s ma brought her Canadian cousin Rob.

Did Mary ever find out why Michelle's ma let her keep the big bowl? Did she get a newer, bigger bowl? Was there something off with that bowl? Is it a passive aggressive thing, like "she kept it this long, might as well just take it for good"?

Or, plot twist: The Big Bowl was Mary's to begin with, she loaned it to Deidre a loooooong time ago and just forgot to get it back. Deidre didn't forget about it, she just wasn't in a rush to return it, and after awhile it'd be just too awkward to bring it back and remind her. Or alternatively, Gerry was the one to loan it to Deidre (without Mary knowing, she had other bowls) but was too timid to get it back when Deidre didn't immediately return it. Or, Grandda loaned it to Deidre and purposely didn't get it back so he could blame it on Gerry and maybe get Mary to divorce him.

Is Mary keeping the big bowl? Or will the anxiety of wondering why it's in her possession drive her mad?
