Inside “Hakan’s War Manager”: Game Design Log — 23
Hey, it’s Omer from Oba Games. This week, let’s talk about the story of our zero-budget independent studio journey while working on Hakan’s War Manager, which you can check out with our playable demo. Zero Budget Means Zero Money First things first, when we kicked off this journey, my brother and I found ourselves on the same page. Both curious about making a game, we thought, “Why not give it…

Devlog #-0.75
Okay, I know, weird numbering, but #0 is reserved for when the idea is finalised and #1 for when the development begins.
The name!
I decided on a name! I know, it’s kinda backwards, I don’t think you think up a name and then write the story based on that name, but look. 1. It’s a very cool name 2. It thematically fit what I already brainstormed. So the name?
Echoes From The Past.
Okay, so the idea is, the player character is just a normal person living their life… until a reverberating loud sound is heard, and the player is transported to a place that seems to be covered in trees, wildlife, you get the point. The timeline is generally deterministic, but your choices will have consequences. You killed the tool smith's great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandparent? Welp, guess you can’t have any more new tools. Obviously, that is kinda player antagonistic, so there are going to be other sources, but you know. What’s a time travel story without some consequences? The rest of the story is detailed in the brainstorm section of my milanote.
Birb
I wanted an animal companion, and it’s not going to be an underwater game (probably???) so why not a birb. People are boring, birbs are cool. I thought of a songbird at first, but I also want something intimidating..? Because it could assist in combat and stuff. Corvids are cool tho, although they’re not singing birds per se. Owls are an idea, as their physiology is kind built around detecting sounds easily and being stealth hunters and their sounds, while not melodic, can be melodized. A fictionalized eagle is another, which is what I got DALL-E to create, you can see them in the brainstorm section again.
Language
I have had an interest in conlangs (constructed languages) for a while now, but it never really went anywhere. I could, you know, just make everyone talk in random sounds, but I am paranoid about attention to detail so I wanna make an actual language that they speak. Possibly composed completely of music notes and different letters are different pitches. I guess that kinda makes inflection hard, so I think it’ll be integrated into the language itself. Anyways, gotta research, Solresol seems especially of interest.
Also, the project seems to have become waaaaay too big in scope for me, so I think I'm gonna start development and do the design alongside, so I'm gonna split this into a Designlog and a Devlog.
Okay, I can’t remember what else is new. I wrote everything in the milanote, so maybe you can find new things.

On the blog... How to Add Color Into Your Space! #linkinbio ✨ This quote from Lilly Pulitzer rings true when it comes to life and your interiors! Think of walking into your home on a bleak day and being greeted by a bright, yellow, sunshine of a chair or gorge pops of pinks, greens and blues in art and decor. Will that not at least brighten you up a bit? ✨ In the past, I’ve kept it pretty neutral when it came to my own home, but lately I’ve been trying to incorporate colorful deliciousness into each space. ✨ Adding color doesn’t have to be overwhelming. You can start big or small, bold or softer. ✨ Check it out and let me know how you feel about color in your spaces below! 😘 ✨ #atleecodesigns #designlog #becomeobsessedwithyourownhome (at Newport Beach, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B81RacpgEgj/?igshid=1l2os7uvmuvpy

Tobacco shed chiaroscuro: The tobacco harvest in Lancaster Pa, is still an entirely manual process, designed around the size and weight of the plant and the strength of a man. The architecture for curing the tobacco plant continue this design logic and is subdivided into 12’x12’x12’ structural cubes. The cubes are subdivided into thirds and a rafter system stores the thousands of the 40lbs tobacco lath. Each lath is composed of six green tobacco plants. #agriculturalarchitecturemachines #designlogic #design #farmarchitecture #barnarchitecture #lancasterpa #lancastercountyfarm #farm #preindustrialrevolution #lancastercounty #architecture #masterplanning #design #craftsmanship #farmer #tobacco #tobaccoshed #tobaccobarn #preservation #light #chiaroscuro #architecture #interiordesign (at Lancaster, Pennsylvania)

Final Piece
We were asked to analyze a few pictures and sounds and to write our first impressions of each piece and our final thoughts. After a group discussion, which was highly influential on my selection of which media and piece I would select for my storyboard, I decided to go with “What’s He Building” by Tom Waits because I immediately thought up a great and dark visual representation for the soundtrack. I began to brainstorm and quickly sketch any idea that I had. I believe that the sketching was the most important part of my development because after I had chosen which sketches I would want to bring to life I had a set plan. Gathering the props was a bit stressful but I managed. Finding a Fedora hat was a vital part of the project as it gave my piece a sense of time and background.
Upon starting I explained to my friend, the subject of the photographs, the process he will undergo, including the make up process and what he’d be wearing. In the sketches my subject is wearing a fedora and a trench coat and his physical appearance was slowly getting dirtier and grimier with his progressively deteriorating mental condition. I believe the make-up was very exaggerated but for a self read storyboard, the more exaggerated the piece is the more people will understand what is going on. The image taking was incredibly enjoyable and overall an entertaining experience. The photographs went according to plan and in my opinion were accurate. The added suggestions from friends made the photographs that much more intriguing. One of the shots, where the smoke of the cigarette matches the contour of his eye perfectly was a once only possible shot and I’m glad that I caught it. I believe that that was the most successful shot. To connect all the shots together I put in supportive shots that I had taken but hadn’t intended on using. I intended to present the photographs as they were but on the following day my tutor suggested that I find a way to present these photographs in a way that people would understand the story. So I decided to turn this photograph set into a short movie clip with “What’s He Building” as the background soundtrack. I cut the soundtrack down, edited out any irrelevant lines and carefully positioned each photograph to match the narrator’s sentences. The project was an overall success and the audience understood the story.
