I felt like drawing chibi ascendance of a bookworm characters.

From the last two books alone along with the prepubs, I mean. Yeah.

Also the fact that I got impatient like four books ago and read the webnovel...

I don't regret it, but now I'm kind of tempted to do a whole lot of incredibly spoiler heavy funny pictures...

BUT BOOKWORM STUFF!

Y'know, I started learning Japanese to see if I could learn the language before all the light novels got translated-

Which is looking like more of a pipe dream as time goes by,

(I started two years ago, but haven't gotten that far)

But now I genuinely just want to learn Japanese, light novels aside, cause like... BOOKS. In a different language? And poetry? And Stuff? And Anime?

Besides Japanese just looks pretty. Which yes, I know is a kind of shallow reason but still-

Eh. I just like the language. It's cool. Though it makes you realise just how weird English is. I mean, I do not envy anyone trying to learn English as their second language, it makes like, no sense. I mean, it is useful, since so many people speak it, but I am also very grateful that I don't have to learn it.

Anyway. I felt like drawing today, so here we have 'totally there in person' Myne facing off against Detlinde! Who will win?

I mean if Myne was actually there I feel like she would utterly destroy Detlinde, mainly because y'know. You don't threaten Ferdinand when Myne's around. Overall bad move/prepare to be obliterated-

Part 5 vol. 3 done. The one in which Rozemyne has had enough and drags everyone kicking and screaming into communicating clearly. Heisshitze finally learned he fucked up, Lestilaut’s mom really gave his fanart of Rozemyne to Rozemyne to punish him, Lueuradi and Muriella became Rozemyne x Ferdinand (Ferdimyne? Rozenand?) shippers and Oswald became an anti, Rozemyne herself is once again an ace mood inventing crushes to fit in, Detlinde is the worst and any sympathy I ever felt for her is null an void and I would like to bitch slap her.

Book Review: ‘Ascendance of a Bookworm’ #14 (4.2)

Ascendance of a Bookworm: Part 4 Volume 2 (Ascendance of a Bookworm by Miya Kazuki My rating: 5 of 5 stars Aside from the dumbass (lovesick) prince, aside from the spiteful (petty) archknights, and aside from her exceedingly worrisome (annoying) caretakers back home, Rozemyne's first semester abroad is going swell. ASCENDANCE OF A BOOKWORM v14 is the novel series' finest example of "one person's daily aspiration is another person's unmitigated disaster." Lady Rozemyne slips into a comfortable schedule of attending the library and further coaching up her duchy's peers. She occasionally makes time for a tea party or two, but only when necessary or in furtherance of her personal goals. Is it really Rozemyne's fault that she shows up Prince Anastasius, arrogant and abrasive, whenever he challenges her to prove her noble worth? Is it really Rozemyne's fault that the jerks from the duchy of Dunkelfelger are too stupid to do their own background work to avoid being humiliated when attempting to match wits? Whatever the case, readers track Rozemyne's daily adventures as she ingratiates herself to the library staff, befuddles fellow archduke candidates, and occasionally wades into interduchy statecraft, if by sheer accident. ASCENDANCE OF A BOOKWORM v14 is a strong, entertaining read. Without constant commentary from Ferdinand, Sylvester, and Karstedt, the young woman's delightfully logical efforts to weasel out of danger are met with just the right balance of amusement and confusion. Social graces this girl has not. For example, when a rival duchy challenges Ehrenfest to a game of treasure-stealing ditter, Rozemyne-the-strategist absolutely dominates. And when Anastasius publicly chides her intellect, Rozemyne-the-brilliant calmly and coolly proves she's eternally prepared with a comeback. One of the novel's best moments occurs during a tea party. A friendly get-together between Rozemyne and the dainty Lady Eglantine (duchy of Klassenberg) goes sideways when Anastasius crashes the party and insists Rozemyne compose a new piece of music for his sort-of girlfriend. The prince is throwing his weight around and trying to put Ehrefest in its place. Except, of course, Rozemyne snaps her fingers, orders her attendants into ready position, and blithely composes a new tune for the harspiel on the fly. She's that good. It isn't until much later that Rozemyne learns how constantly showing up royalty, and frequently responding to their prodding with raw sarcasm, is typically viewed as a death warrant. Whoops. To that end, the current volume also makes a concerted effort to materialize the nation's political infrastructure. Readers learn more of the balance of power between the two princes (Anastasius and his elder brother, Sigiswald). Readers also learn more about the rules of succession (real or presumed), as well as the consequences of attempting to run away from one's royal fate. As far as drama goes, ASCENDANCE OF A BOOKWORM v14 doesn't disappoint. When one of her retainers expresses outright disgust for serving a noble with such a weak constitution, Rozemyne must make a difficult decision regarding how to properly effect a punishment befitting the ignorant. To cut off a retainer is to disgrace a person's whole family. But doing so also makes one liable for retaliation. If she's too severe, then her reputation may shift toward a more authoritarian vibe. If she's too soft, then her other retainers may view her kindness as a weakness. What's a librarian to do?

I also absolutely love how Rozemyne's weirdo ways have infected her retainers. While certain attendants are treated with more respect due to their knowledge and skills, the idea of this treatment being based on status has no grounds. Not counting scholars, her attendants and knights are headed by a mednoble and laynoble. But more than that, I just adore how they get along despite it all. Sure, Hartmut may bully everyone, but they all respect each other and rely on each other. Every single one of them is important. That's not even mentioning the ways she's affected their thinking, actions, and ideas of respect to the point some have no issue arguing in front of royalty for the comfort of their lady.

my preferred detlinde fix is to stick with a classic and make her play the friendly cousin thing entirely straight for the entire royal academy phase, being a kinda incompetent and prickly but not genuinely malicious figure, slowly eroding rozemyne and wilfried's defenses by lamenting her abuse from georgine and being just kind of too stupid to carry out any plotting, perhaps even keeping the reveal that she's already been ruled out of succession for her incompetence and that georgine intentionally kept her with incompetent tutors to really mirror wilfried, and georgine has completely cut off her support which is still cruel even if she's sort of mean and not very good at anything, maybe even getting charlotte to let her guard down, keeping the act up well enough that even hartmut and ferdinand can't conclusively prove she's up to something even if they warn rozemyne not to trust blindly, having her arranged marriage to ferdinand be a terrible situation for everyone that detlinde is against but can't be stopped because it's georgine's plan, and when he's stuck in ahrensbach he's frustrated by her incompetence but admits that he can't actually find any evidence of malice until, finally, suddenly, at the climax, she reveals that she was a true schemer all along and blows EVERYTHING the hell up, tricking letizia into poisoning ferdinand, and executing a reverse ambush to explode half of the invading troops in some kind of incredibly unethical lanzenavian trap that magic can't overcome, immediately turning the battle from a victory lap into a tense skirmish while ehrenfest has to defend its own foundation from georgine herself.

one of my favorite "obsessing over bookworm" pastimes is inventing AUs that generate different outcomes, or examining how changing one factor would affect the whole story. for example, reworking everything to make sigiswald have to become dietelinde's fiancé instead of ferdinand (because they deserve each other). or a "what if eglantine was adopted into trauerqual's family instead of aub klassenberg's?" and what it always makes me realize is just how tightly plotted the whole thing is because you change one character's decision and EVERYTHING FALLS APART.

YEAHHHHHH everything links to everything else!!! no action doesn't matter!!!!

those very specific circumstances that we see are ALL necessary to get the ending, and without it something ALWAYS changes or messes up massively

Just finished part 5 vol. 2. and I know we were basically told this would happen but AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I was starting to like you Lestilaut! Go stand in the corner and think about what you've done! Wilfried and Hannelore are pretty cute. Ferdinands plan to keep Rozemye out of the Archive failed immediately. Rozemyne played Detlinde and Fraularm against each other. Also there was a ritual or something, probably wasn’t important.
