Loveletter had been unable to stay and puppyguard Pixel out of fear for much longer. She had to still go out and get food for the both of them... At this rate, the meals were just going to pixel anyway, sonce Loveletter just feeds on it's affection.
Even when she had left for the datastream to gather fresh code, she had left a small, rosey pink beatle to linger in the upper corner of Pixels room- She doesn't trust just Xavier to watch the damn kid by himself.
Regardless, she moved forward like a spider, creeping and crawling through the different links between devices to find some straggler, weaker viruses to detain. She didn't expect that she would be out for very long at least, since there's always a plethora of bugs spawning every day. She just prefers something a little more leveled up for her tastes.... Loveletter had to sift through a bunch of parasitic things that probably had only just manifested in the datastream- Food for less advanced viruses, thats all they are. If theyre lucky, out of the hundreds of little guys that are in this swirling vortex of nasty code, one or two might make it to the next stage.
She had searched for a while before she had crept up on something new. Something a bit more substantial, more digital meat on its bones. It showed itself off as a monochrome little thing, kind of staticy. Shes not sure if Pixel would enjoy the texture of something with static in its code, but once she breaks it down to its core components she can just seperate that for her little LoveBug.
Loveletter could see that it seemed injured, by how it moved. It was a bit animalistic, probably not entirely sentient yet- Its a good catch. She decided to not waste her time, and lunged into frame- The shapeshifter sent forward her hand, striking with a long pink tendril of flickering code.
It should of been over. Loveletter has never encountered a middle tier that could survive an attack properly aimed for the core.
It should of been.
Unfortunately for her, in Loveletter's eager attempt to grab the food and get back to her young, the woman's clouded mindset had made it so she had not noticed the more than abnormally large shadow underneath such a small creature. Out from this shadow, upon plunging into its core, had merely pestered it- Woke it up.
The shadow twisted and turned, churning out a large, slimlike mass that grew upward. It added onto the small creature that Loveletter had thought she was attacking, and began to slop onto it to show off its true stature.
A large, lanky figure with stark white hair and a plastered smile stood about a foot overtop of the other, it's static laced skin flickering off of its body as it stabilized.
"Y○ure a l○ng way fr○m h○me, Aren't y○u?"
Loveletter felt the hair prickle on her neck. Shit. Shit shit shit shit.
This wasn't a middle tier. This was the same advancement as herself, and she had accidentally stumbled into a newly formed domain. She wouldn't know how strong this thing is before seeing an attack though, and... shes not sure she wants to stick around and find out.
That appearance chilled her to the bone. Instead of fleeing, or maybe even trying to kill it first... That striking resemblance of one she used to know has frozen her in place, an made her want to try to reason with it.
"I d♡nt me4n any trouble- I... I haven't gone out this f4r fr0m my home dev1ce- I wasn't aw4re there was a d0main here, I will just be leav1n-"
SHINK.
She was stopped in her tracks, spluttering on her words as a sharp blade of sorts had pierced through her guts like butter, the black gunk that was her blood beginning to spill from an open wound right through her torso.
"Leave? Why w○uld I want y○u t○ leave? It w○uld be such a wasted ○pp○rtunity t○ finally get an evenly matched fight."
Loveletter stumbled back, clutching for the weapon deep in her stomach- When she had pulled out a round, sharpened disk like a frisby... Ornamented with a smiley face. As she looked up, she saw the figure had equiped a long, bent piece of metal out to it's side. A... a crowbar..?
Shit... this guy wasn't as talkative as someone like Rex or something. If she's not careful here, she could become the food. How did she not see him throw that disk..?
She decided that this wasn't a fight that she had to win. Pride or honor be damned, she wasnt about that. Survival has always been her number one driving force.
So she scattered. She allowed her body's pixels to fall apart, scattering into thousands of little beetles, and then sent the swarm racing back home. During the short chase, the man threw those disks, sent up firewalls, took out clusters of those creatures- But it couldn't take out all of them, and thats what counted.
Loveletter made it back home, but not in one piece.

ZywOo’s Poor IEM Sydney Performance Sparks CS2 Community Debate Over AWP’s Role
Zyw0o had a rough outing in IEM Sydney, which culminated in a 2-1 loss to FaZe Clan in the elimination game. The French superstar is arguably the best AWP player in the world, and his performance has the CS community asking whether the AWP is going to be the same force it was in previous Counter-Strike iterations. Dev1ce, a Counter-Strike household name, thinks that the big green has taken a substantial hit on the all-important T side. If you can’t attack well, you won’t win most of your games, and losing the ability to use CS‘s best gun to its old capability is a pretty substantial hit. https://twitter.com/dev1ce/status/1713915029668467095 There are a ton of factors that need to be addressed here. The new lowered round count in CS2 could have an effect on AWPer’s stats. It’s a simple contention: fewer rounds means fewer chances AWPers have to grab the game-changing rifle. With fewer AWPs, there are fewer kills with the AWP, decreasing the sniper’s impact on a game of CS. Additionally, many of the matches on the first day of IEM Sydney were best-of-ones. BO1s, especially with the lowered round count, are horrible in terms of analysis. There simply isn’t enough data to make a definitive call. In Vitality’s opening best-of-one against BetBoom, ZywOo was the second-worst-rated player on his side. In a tough best-of-three against FaZe Clan, he was the highest-rated player on his team. With Counter-Strike‘s long history, CS2‘s simple changes are going to lead many to think that the game is just a CS:GO clone. Vitality may be the first team out of IEM Sydney, an embarrassing performance for the top-rated team in the world, but we’re going to need to see a lot more data before we determine that their dependence on ZywOo’s brilliance is the issue. The Art of Commentary Storytelling (Part 1 of 2)
This is the first non-Street Fighter piece so bare with me.
Like a lot of these blog posts, there are always caveats I have. I am still very much an amateur commentator. I've been lucky enough to cast at a couple of our Australian major tournaments for SFV as well as being apart of the short lived Gfinity AU series.
From those experiences I've been able to talk, learn, and found inspiration from a lot of very talented people who have been doing it for far longer then I have and are much better and more experienced then me.
Along those lines I wanted to touch on one aspect that I tried to develop and learn very early and something that I will always gravitate to before I cast at events which is telling the story.
Sports and esports are entertainment by nature and as the commentator you are the narrator, so a lot of the principles that they use in other entertainment mediums to captivate an audience carry over greatly.
The “and then...” mistake
Something I watched a couple of years ago were the South Park creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, talk about how they write episodes. It revolved around the idea that your story should not be dragged along aimlessly. Instead every story point (or beat) should have the words “Therefore” or “But”. If instead your beats have the words “and then...” you're in big trouble. A story that goes:
“this happens …
... and then this happens...
… and then this happens...” The reason its dull is because it could be a list that can be placed in any order. Yes sometimes on the mic especially in hype moments you can absolutely let the action tell the story itself (Thats the art of dead air which could be its own essay).
But especially for play by play casters, who feel its up to them to talk through the action, simply linking beats together can go a long way because the audience don't jump around trying to follow you. Getting to tell a story that goes:
“This happens...
… and therefore this happens ...
… but this happens...
… and therefore this happens...”
Because each beat drives the next bit of action, it will be easier for an audience to be able to understand why a players actions had repercussions or understand how they were able to get themselves into a winning position.
The first thing you might want to say is “But how do you tell a story where you don't know what happens, UNTIL IT HAPPENS?!”
You are right in that nothing is scripted, but you can also set yourself up to have “outs” or different directions to take and explain the action and this is why I think “Therefore” and “But” is a really good tool because they can apply directly over to conflicts in game
Lets say we are following the story of this player and use his story as our first beat, any positive contribution he makes can easily snowball into a “therefore”. For example:
“dev1ce has to be careful, (beat) WHAT A SHOT onto kennys! (therefore) mid now open for Astralis”
“Tokido, he's looking for that poke,(beat) NICE! gets the whiff punish! (therefore) Meter to work with, whats the mixup?”
And conversely if they mess up or get beaten in the exchange thats an easy place to insert a “But”
“dev1ce has to be careful, (beat) THATS WHY (But), Kennys trying to keep G2 alive on this map.
“Tokido, he's looking for that poke, (beat) BEAUTIFUL again from Daigo! (but), Tokido is in trouble, he's running out of time.
Knowledge will give us what to say, “Therefore” and “But” will give us the way to say it.
Pacing curve
A few years ago, I watched an episode of Extra Credits on Pacing and In that video they described a pacing curve, measuring the level of engagement over time in relation to Star Wars: A New Hope.
What's important to consider here is that pacing is a succession of peaks and valleys. It is not a line that grows exponentially upwards nor is it turning everything up to 11 and trying to keep it there. This is true for every entertainment medium: Movies, Novels, Plays, Comedic stand up, Video games, they are all about keeping levels of engagement to aim for a curve in exactly the same way.
Think about when you eat your favourite chocolate. Great for the first bite or two. But the more you eat the less fulfilling it becomes and suddenly you start to need eat a lot more to have the same level of satiation.
You need to give the audience periods of rest in between periods of hype. If you don't, one of two things can happen.
1. The audience becomes so overwhelmed It becomes exhausting to keep up.
2. It becomes so routine that you can no longer differentiate between what’s actually a good play, and what's normal.
Remember that if you push everything as hype! Then nothing will be hype because the audience no longer knows what hype is any more.
Think about any survival horror game you have ever played. The building up of tension before the scare is equally as important as the scare itself. Equally is getting them to climb down from that tension so you can scare them again.
Another conclusion that EC demonstrated is that this pacing curve comes at every level. The piece holistically of course but also applies to levels and funnels down to single moments in games. When I personally have to prep for casting the 3 things I think about are Story in the Arc,Story in the Series and Story in the Game
_____________________________________________________
Okay its a two parter but the 2nd part is available right now so go check it out. There I will elaborate more on The Arc, The Series and The Game.

S1mple, olofmeister, or kennyS? CS:GO fans can’t decide which pro had ‘scariest’ peak
Over the course of the game's eleven-year history, many of professional players have made their impact on CS:GO esports. Maybe that's why there isn't agreement among the community as to who had the finest prime. It's difficult to choose between legendary players like GeT_RiGhT, kennyS, olofmeister, dev1ce, coldzera, NiKo, s1mple, and ZywOo because they all put in outstanding performances over the course of CS:GO's existence. FACEIT started this conversation on Twitter earlier today, and it resulted in a lot of debates on Reddit. https://twitter.com/FACEITcs/status/1693979561166274817 While it’s hard to deny that s1mple is the CS:GO GOAT as he has been a dominant player since 2016 and was even named the player of the decade by ESL in 2022, fans are not sure if he had the highest peak. A lot of fans, for example, also mentioned olofmeister’s form in 2015 and kennyS before the AWP was nerfed in the same year. “Olof was so scary, he would often be so decisive with just one or two kills and the round was over,” one fan wrote. “KennyS had easily the highest high, borderline unstoppable at peak,” another fan wrote. This is an endless discussion because it depends on many factors, let alone bias. I wasn’t following CS:GO until 2016, so I missed a bunch of players’ peaks. Although I recognize what GeT_RiGhT, olofmeister, kennyS, and flusha did for the game, it’s hard for me to put them up there with coldzera, s1mple, NiKo, and ZywOo because I followed these guys playing live rather than just watching YouTube clips. Based on what I’ve seen since 2016, I’d put s1mple and ZywOo at the top next to each other. The French AWPer started playing professionally only at the end of 2018, but he’s on his way to winning his third HLTV best player of the year award. If I had to throw another player in there, I’d lean toward coldzera or NiKo because they’ve had jaw-dropping performances playing mainly with the AK-47 and M4A4. This debate shows how impressive CS:GO esports has been in the past 11 years and I’m sure other great players will come up when CS2 launches this summer. Read the full article
