Okay, so... Idk if anyone has made this ref already, but has anyone noticed how much the yellow guy's world ressembles of Mabelland? I mean, just look at it

Because, I swear, when I saw his mind world, I was literally crying laughing out there and then. Waiting for that worm thing to turn into Bill at one point

favourite tv show dhmis episode is when Yellow guy is called slurs by Red Guy and Green Guy, gets so distraught he dissociates and a worm crawls into his brain and he is forced to listen to the worms podcast

So, I was deep into opinions on DHMIS again, and this time I've developed a theory/interpretation of my own that I genuinely like better than all the others I've seen.
First, the YouTube series and the TV series aren't directly related, "plot" wise.
I say this, because I think Lesley created the whole story. She didn't create the characters; instead she's using them, characters from a children's TV show, to make up her own stories.
Either because she genuinely liked the show or, the option I like the most, because they remind her of her son. Maybe it was a show he loved, and maybe they even watched it together, and now she clings to it as a way to cling to his memory.
I think she tries to create or imitate stories from the show, or that could fit in the show, but her adult knowledge, her odd sense of humor, and her hurt and cynicism from David's death always find a way in, and the stories take dark turns, have dark moments, or are just built around or into unsetlling themes. And when she catches herself doing that, instead of preserving her son's memory "properly", that's when the anger comes out, and it sometimes shows in the characters we're watching now.
I think Yellow Guy matters a lot, because he was David's favourite, and Lesley is projecting HARD onto him. The whole last episode is basically Lesley having a self-insert moment, bonding with Yellow Guy, the youngest character, the perpetually underestimated one. But ultimately he can't replace David, and so She has to kick him out, and full back into her coping routine.
In the car episode, things went off the rails after she accidentally triggered her memories of David's accident, and so she created a narrative where they ended worse than if they had stayed at home, and she saves them.
Hell, in the family episode she's airing out her grievances with everyone who thinks they have all the answers about family and how incomplete you are without a "proper" one. That and the worm ones are the most cynical ones, where the sentiment against preachy assholes is on full display.
In the family one she kinda writes herself into a corner, so she solves it by pulling a Roy Ex Machina, who even devours all the toxic and abusive family members.
In the worm one, she's reminded of the self-help guru types, the life coaches and other such scammers who are only looking to make money at the expense of vulnerable people - as someone who lost a son, she would be a prime target for them.
Every episode it's Lesley using the characters and the format as a way to exorcise some demons. It's probably not the healthiest way, but it's what she has.
Tl;Dr: the YouTube series is the original children's TV show, and the TV show is Lesley's coping mechanism to deal with the death of her son by using the characters to create stories.
