The Fire Chapter 2
AO3
“He is alive, Bree. In his time. I just know it.”

Ever since the fire she has been walking on air. Carrying the bit of tartan around  long after the flowers wilted.

“Mama, you said he was to die at that final battle.”  It is a gentle reminder. I want him to be alive as well so I can meet the man who gave me life and then saved it.

“He was. Something happened. History changed. Somewhere in the books Frank has, must be prove of that.”

“I will help you search.” The quarter is over and I have a few months. If I can help her ease her mind one way or the other, it will be time well spent.

“Thank you darling.”

Daddy had a lot of books about the time my birth father came from.  “Was he always interested in this time or was it after, uh, you came back he started researching this time?”

She sits among the stack of books. Her eyes are thoughtful. “A bit of both. We were in Scotland,” oh the longing in her voice when she spoke of that place, “originally so he could research his ancestors.”

“They were from Scotland?” I wipe the dust off my hands. It would be shocking were they. Daddy was so English.

“No,” her chuckle says she finds the idea as preposterous as I did, “but he had an ancestor,” her eyes grow dark. Her hands, that had laid relaxed on her lap, now become fists, “a truly evil man, loathsome, not that he knew that. I didn’t tell him of the things Black Jack did,” she shakes her head coming back from wherever she has been, “ that was the reason he was researching this time, at first.”

She rises and pours a bit of scotch into a glass. After a healthy sip, “my return expanded his area of research.”

“Is he dead, this horrible man?”

A nod. “Yes, of that I am sure of.”

“How?” It isn’t that I don’t trust her. It is just I don’t want her or myself near such a creature. Oh, if we find him, I will be going back with her.

“Your daddy’s research. It showed he died at Colluden Moor. Jamie would have made sure.”

“What did he do to you?”

I watch as her face transforms from the longing it holds when she speaks of Jamie to rage.

“Not as much me as…” she takes a few deep breaths that have me regretting asking her, “he tortured and raped Jamie.”

I gasp feeling the world tilt. For the rest of my life, I know time will be divided into before and after I knew this. A few naughty words are said.

“I am glad he is dead then and long rotting in the ground.”

“Burning in hell.” Mama adds.

Even though daddy and mama have raised me as a Catholic, mama’s words don’t bother me. Some people are just irredeemable. It sounds like this Black Jack is one of them.

“Let’s get back to looking.”  I suggest. She smiles at me. We each pick up a book.

Around an hour later.

“What’s this?” The folded paper fell out of one of the research books. I unfold it and see myself in male form. It is on a wanted form for a bloke who’s  name is listed as Red Jamie AKA Mac Dhub AKA Jamie Fraser, my father.

I must have made a sound of some kind. Mama hurries over to me. “ Bree what…?” then she sees the paper, “Oh my God!”

“It’s him, isn’t it?”

The shake in her hand as she takes it let’s me know I am right.

Her eyes scan it, lingering on him before finally moving down.  “1750! Bree, he survived the battle.”

“Wanted for treason.”

She waves off his possible treasonous acts without a second thought.  “He was alive in 1750. I have to go back.”

“No mama. We do.”

Ex-Designer Project Bar in Barcelona
via e-flux
Martí Guixé’s Ex-Designer Project Bar, an exceptional project that turns a digitally designed interior, produced entirely using full-size 3D printing techniques into a standalone object, will be on display at the Disseny Hub Barcelona (DHub) from May 23 to August 25.
The project was born in November 2015, when Martí Guixé, one of Barcelona’s most internationally influential 21st century designers, set out to design and 3D-print, independently and without help, all the components of a bar on Barcelona’s C/ Entença in collaboration with architect Pau Badia. The bar, an empty commercial unit with minimal structure, was gradually redesigned and built over a period of almost five years, using three on-site printers while still in operation. Thus, all the bar’s components were gradually printed: everything from the tiles on the walls and the furniture down to the smallest utensils, such as glasses of different types, plates and cutlery.
According to Martí Guixé, the process itself is what matters, so the project became something performative, incorporating coincidence in a natural way.
The use of the establishment as a bar—where concerts, presentations, talks and other events were also held—was just as important as its role as a laboratory for experimenting on the possibilities of additive printing, and the utopia of digital autonomy. The project explores the true potential of digital fabrication technologies to achieve the dream of self-sufficiency for local production, without having to rely on large global manufacturing systems.
Just as the bar was finished, with the grand opening scheduled for February 2020, the pandemic and subsequent lockdown forced it to close. It then underwent a process of “deconstruction”, which was carried out behind closed doors and in an orderly manner, like a work of archaeology, in order to preserve it in full. The Ex-Designer Project Bar thus ceased to be a bar or a work of interior design to become a standalone “object” adapted for other possible uses.
Martí Guixé’s Ex-Designer Bar is a reflection on the potential for democratising industrial production and the industrial process: “The use of 3D technology makes artisans redundant and unifies materials. The world is made up of ideas, not of people’s energy”. He also said that “bringing the Ex-Designer Bar to a museum turns it into an object, a ruin and an archaeological site of the future”.
The first full-size reconstruction of the bar With Ex-Designer Project Bar, the DHub is exhibiting this monumental object in its original format, after assembling the walls and other various components: A total of 30 wooden panels measuring 122 cm x 150 cm, plus over six thousand 14 cm x 14 cm tiles. The result is an installation that measures 8.75 x 3.56 m and is 5.02 m high, whose component parts have been 3D-printed in full size using polylactic acid (PLA), a biodegradable polymer made from 100% renewable resources, such as corn or plant starch.
The interior walls include the front of the bar, which features figurative motifs from other projects by Martí Guixé, the side bars with experiments with bas-reliefs and pseudo-geometric figures in various sizes and thicknesses, and unsuccessful attempts to create a series of bag and coat hooks. There is also a notice board with backlit tiles for posting information about events and food and drink prices, as well as a front panel in which the main figure represents Artificial Intelligence, a representation of all the 3D printers used, including the one for printing food.

To begin with, I want to thank you for making such an auspicious, superb, astounding video. Dhub ji, I'm one of the bjp supporter for now, because I don't think other parties to be competent enough to be chosen as the need of the hour. But, I solely believe in equality, justice, fraternity & freedom (French Revolution 1789), and oneness with the entire cosmos. I protest against blind religiosity, jingoism & fanaticism. What, from the bottom of my heart I believe in, is - Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, loving each one and all by heart ♥ propagated by Vasudeva Krishna. He says: any kind of individualism (polarisation) & believing in differences (for evil motive) is the root source of primal sin. Love the entire stristi (creation) & pralay (destruction) , everything starting from grain of sand, even the smallest.
P.S. One's action as well as inaction both has consequences in the cosmos. Be the perfect, the best version of you. Search for Him/Her/The One, within & outside.

W4 - Researching
I feel as though I've been struggling quite a lot with my layouts and I just wanted to do a bit of a wider and more in-depth exploration of different pamphlet designs and ways that designers are able to fit quite complex pieces of information together. I want to ensure readability and create a complete and dynamic typographic and visual system that allows the reader to easily pin all the important pieces of information.
I looked at this project by Lo Siento studio for a DHUB leaflet and really fell in love with the design style when I saw it on our classes presentation. I really like the use of colours and how that interacts with image, forming an overlay effect which gives the impression of risograph/screenprint material. I really like the composition as well of the work, I find that the hierarchy and composition of the work is very refined and works really well at positioning the viewer in the right spaces to decode the messages. I find that their use of typography in this leaflet is masterful and the typefaces really compliment each other, which create a really interesting balance on the page. The grid the designers used also create these really clean lines that allow for a really nice aesthetic, giving the information space to breathe on the page which I've found to be really important and something I struggle with personally as a designer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also looked at the posters that Michael Bierut created for a series of Architecture lectures at Yale in partnership with design studio Pentagram which was another example of work shown in class that I found really interesting and really captured my attention. I'm really inspired by a lot of Pentagrams work and found that these posters are so effective and the biggest stand out for me personally is the use of typography which I find to be quite significant to the work. I am really inspired about how Bierut can create such visual interest using only typography and that through his composition and choice of type, he uses the character Y as the focal 'image' of the first poster. This is definitely something I want to improve at as I have often found that my type-based posters tend to look like there's something missing so doing some more exploration into how I can use type as image within my work would be extremely beneficial to my learning as a designer, especially since typography is one of the areas of design I feel most drawn to as a creative. I also really like how once again Bierut is using grids and space to create neat and tidy paragraphs of information that convey important information in a clear way - I really liked how he was able to still apply a playful and creative tone to his work while still making it practical and easy to read

Week Three - Class Content
This class was focused on layout, composition, and typography. The lecture covered some basic ideas and terms related to design layout such as contrast, proximity, space, hierarchy, and repetition. For each concept, example imagery was shown which made it extra clear what each idea was about. The key takeaway I got from the lecture part of the class was that the role of these concepts in layout is to guide the eye of the viewer, and make the content easy to understand and absorb. Layout and composition are carefully constructed and controlled so that information is digested in a certain way. In a way, the role of the designer in layout design is to manipulate how the audience looks at the final outcome.

Michal Markiewicz - Autea Brand Guidelines
https://www.behance.net/gallery/77531917/Autea-Branding-Web-Design
This work by Michal Markiewicz is a brand guidelines project. The layout of the information uses the idea of proximity very well as information is grouped into sections that are easy to read and understand. The white space separating different elements works well to draw the eye to the key information.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Design Craft - ‘The Battle’
https://bestawards.co.nz/graphic/design-craft/for-the-people/the-battle/
This brochure utilises space around the type to create hierarchy, drawing the eye to the title. The refined colour palette works very well for the project. The red colour ties in with the name of the project ‘the battle’ as red can represent blood. I really like how the layout has created groupings of information by staggering paragraphs. This helps to guide the eye as to the order of reading.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lo Siento - Design Museum of Barcelona
http://www.losiento.net/entry/dhub-leaflet
The contrast on this brochure between the type sizes works well to create hierarchy in the poster. The white space around the type and the spaced proximity between elements creates clear groups of information, making the text very organised and easy to follow.
Tumblr media
Wolfgang Weingart
https://www.artic.edu/artworks/227052/nr-5-typographie-als-malerei-poster
Weingart’s work uses lots of contrast. Text sizes are experimented with, with the eye being drawn to the larger slab type. The colour palette of an off white and slightly muted black has high contrast in itself, and I like the idea of contrast is pushed with the scale of the different elements.
Tumblr media
Erica Choi - Folded Poster
https://www.behance.net/gallery/70878341/Folded-Poster
This project utilises a very format as I will be using for the brochure project. The fold lines In the page have been utilised as guides for the design, which help to guide the viewer through the brochure. The bright pink accent colour adds hierarchy to the brochure, as it draws the eye to the cover and the introductory information about the brochure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Five British Graphic Designer’s Poster (1969)
https://www.flickr.com/photos/pinkponk/505607546
This poster uses negative space really nicely and in an interesting way. The 5 glyph has been treated to create some nice angles by cutting sections off. The angles reflect the union jack, which links to the topic of British designers. This still leaves a legible 5, but adds a large field of negative space which guides the eye to the information at the top of the red shape.
Tumblr media
Rebecca Nolte - MoMA
https://sk.pinterest.com/pin/599893612856061928/
These posters use the concept of contrast very well. As well as using simple and contrasting colours, Nolte has created lots of contrast in the text size. The huge background letters contrast with the smaller text which creates quite and abstract and dynamic look.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tutorial
The class tutorial was focused on using InDesign to create consistency with typography. The tools that were focused on were paragraph and character styles, as well as the table function. These are definitely tools I want to get more familiar with as they are a big part of professional practice and allows iterations to be tested quickly. For the final brochure and poster InDesign file that will be handed in, I will be using these techniques covered in class to make my work more organised and professional.

How to Protect Yourself from Negative Energy
Highly sensitive persons must have firm boundaries in order to defend themselves from psychic attacks and other people's negative feelings. A psychic attack is a sort of bad energy that can be given purposefully by black magicians or unconsciously by a jealous or disgruntled friend, colleague, or family member.
Tumblr media
The symptoms might range from being exhausted and depleted to feeling as if nothing in your life is going right to being attacked by spirits while sleeping. The amount of harm this can do depends on the strength of the person being assaulted, but the most important thing is to keep out of fear and bad emotions, and to understand that these things only have the power you give them.
Here are a few techniques to keep yourself safe, though I would always recommend seeing a shaman if you believe you is being attacked psychically.
Imagine that you have mirrors all over your body protecting you from any attacks and reflecting them back to the sender as one of the best ways to boost your energy. If you're having trouble visualizing this, try wearing a mirror necklace.
Crystals can also be used to safeguard you. They can be worn as jewellery, put in your pocket, or gridded throughout your residence.
Black Tourmaline has the ability to defend against mental attacks and black magic. In the presence of negative energies, it absorbs negativity in the environment and keeps the aura balanced.
Obsidian protects against psychic attacks and helps cleanse the aura of harmful energies. It can also defend against electromagnetic pollution and geopathic stress, as well as remove negative energy from the environment.
Shungite can protect the aura from negative energy such as psychic attacks, negative ideas, and damaging electromagnetic fields. It can also ground you and clear and balance your chakras and aura.
Smudge sticks, such as White Sage or Palo Santo, have a cleansing and purifying impact in the energy field, and can be used to remove negative energy or thought forms. It can also be used to cleanse a room or a house, particularly if you have recently moved in and want to increase the energy and purify the place.
If you believe you are being attacked, try to figure out which direction the attack is coming from. You can cut the cord with the source of the energy and cut it out of your life with a sgian-dhub (traditional Scottish dagger).
Spending time in nature, particularly near trees or water, will help you ground and build your energy, clear your mind, and recuperate from a mental attack. To strengthen each chakra, combine river water with flower petals such as lavender or rose and rub it on it.
Because salt absorbs negative energies, it is one of the most efficient ways to cleanse your aura. You can take a bath in Himalayan rock salt to remove any negativity from your aura and leave it feeling clear and rejuvenated. Putting salt water basins in each corner of the room or any other spot where the energy feels heavy can also assist to cleanse your home.
If you are seeking a source of inspiration and guidance, you can contact Astrologer Sairam Guruji, best Indian astrologer in California, USA.
